Hey! Sorry it's been quite awhile! I've been very busy with school and everything. Here's the next story! I love this song, and as I thought through DEH stories to go with each I immediately thought of Heidi and Evan's Dad, Mark.
In case you haven't read the book or haven't heard this anywhere, Evan's full name is actually Mark Evan Hansen, so that explains the little banter in the third segment of this "chapter".
Hope you enjoy!
Summary: In the beginning love seems like it isn't temporary, but as the years go by, Heidi and Mark realize maybe it is.
Temporary Love
"Yes, Mark! Yes yes yes- there's nothing I would love
more than to be your wife." Heidi collapsed to her knees
in front of him, taking his face in her hands as she
kissed him ardently.
They paused their kissing for the shortest moment so
he could slip the shining emerald ring onto her finger.
"It's beautiful, babe." she whispered, giving him a
glowing smile.
"Just like you."
"Hey, Heidi- I'm home." Mark walked into their house,
maneuvering through stacks of boxes.
Peering into their bedroom where she would've most
likely been attempting to organize her closet, he
frowned when he didn't find her in there.
He made his way to their bathroom, spotting his wife
sitting on the edge of the tub, cradling an object in her
hands.
"Didi!? Are you all right?" he rushed over, kneeling down
in front of her.
She nodded, her tearful eyes meeting his worried ones.
"Look, Mark." she slid the object into his hands.
He gasped, staring at it.
His eyes widened as he looked up to meet hers. "You're
pregnant? No way."
"I am."
He jumped up and scooped her up as well, spinning her
around in their bathroom.
"Mark! Be careful!" she laughed, but still barely held on
After setting her down he wrapped his hands around
her waist. "This wasn't what I was expecting to happen
when I got home from work."
"Hey, Babe? Can you grab me a burping cloth?" Heidi
called from the couch as she nursed two month old
Evan.
"Yeah!" he shouted back, walking in and setting one in
her hands as he sat beside her.
"Don't you dare try to say anything inappropriate, now.
We wouldn't want to corrupt our little Evan so soon."
she kissed their child's head.
"We wouldn't want to do that to Mark." he corrected,
stroking the little fuzz of hair his son possessed.
She set her lips in a straight line. "You may have won
this battle, Mr. Hansen, but I will win this war."
"Never."
"Why did you take off the training wheels?" she asked,
slipping out of the living room where Evan was now
watching Handy Manny.
"I thought he was ready. Will you give me a break?" he
ran a hand through his hair, rolling his eyes.
She scoffed. "Don't roll your eyes, Mark. Our son is in
their whimpering because he skinned his knees. Poor
guy was already scared enough to get on that stupid
bike."
"That bike didn't seem so stupid when you insisted we
buy it for him."
"It was one of his only Hanukkah gifts." she turned
around, pulling open the fridge.
She rummaged through it in silence, taking out
ingredients for chicken nuggets and veggies.
"Heidi," he stepped forward.
"I don't want to talk to you right now. Not until you
apologize to Ev."
He sighed, glancing over to the doorway. "I didn't do-"
She narrowed her eyes.
"I'll go say sorry to Evan. But first," he stepped over and
kissed her shoulder. "I'm sorry."
She bit her lip, attempting to not let him charm her into
smiling.
After he kissed her neck she couldn't help herself as
she giggled. "All right all right. Go say sorry."
"Mommy?" Evan looked up at his mother with wide,
tearful eyes.
She stroked his cheek. "Y-Yeah, honey?"
"Is there another truck, coming… to-to our driveway? A
truck… that will take you away?"
Her eyes widen as she began to shake her head. "No
baby no no no." she started to cry, taking him into her
lap and squeezing his hand. "There's not another truck
in our driveway. Your mom," she swiped the tears off his
face. "Isn't going anywhere- she's staying right here.
No matter what- I'll be here."
He nodded, smiling sadly.
She kissed his head. "When this crazy world feels so
big, and whenever it feels so itty bitty, so... small, I'm
going to be here. I promise, Evi."
"I love you, Mommy."
She smiled, sniffling. "I love you too, Evan."
