It was a few days after Joe had finally gotten himself a Death Weapon. He watched as Maka and the others trained. Joe then sounded a horn and they all stopped, panting.
"How many more days do we have to do this?" Soul asked.
"I need a nap." Black Star said.

"ENOUGH!" Shiori yelled. Joe then walked up and they all looked at him.
"You're all improving. It'll take some time," Joe said, "but you'll make excellent SAMs. However, I suggest you keep any comments about my personal life to yourselves. Otherwise, you'll be doing PT at night before bed AND in the morning before breakfast. Do I make myself clear?" They all tensed up, save for Maka, Kid, Shiori, and Liz.
"Yes, sir!" They all said.
"Good. Morning PT as a group starts tomorrow at 0400. Meet me at the Academy. Dismissed!" Joe said. Soul and Black Star then collapsed and fell asleep. Tsubaki picked up Black Star while Maka picked up Soul.

"See you at home." Shiori said. Joe nodded and Maka looked at him. After the others were out of ear shot, Maka gave a Joe a look.
"Is this about our relationship?" She asked.
"Somewhat. We need to be more careful. If your father found out about us," Joe said, "he would have my head on a pike. I have a feeling Lord Death already knows, and he told Dr. Stein. They're keeping it discreet. Maka, I've had the feelings you have about me about you LONG before you had them about me." Maka then caught on.
"That's how you knew everything. You were trying to build up the courage to approach me and ask me out." She said.
"I never could. You were always busy." Joe said. Maka then smiled and put a hand on Joe's cheek.
"Don't worry, Joe. Not only do I accept your feelings," she said, "I return them a thousand-fold. I'd be honored to date you, and it's because…. I…." Joe then put a hand on her cheek and she gasped, blushing.
"You don't have to say it now if you don't want to." Joe said. Maka smiled before kissing Joe sweetly, which he returned. That was when a familiar ringing sound resonated, causing Joe to break the kiss. Maka sighed as he pulled out the same device from last time and started to press a button, but Maka stopped him.
"You need a day off." She said.
"Much as I appreciate you looking out for my health," Joe said, "crime NEVER takes a day off." Maka went to speak, but sighed.
"You're right." She said. Joe then pressed a button and held the device up to his ear.
"Reagan." He said.
[Moments later….]
Joe walked into a bar and the owner pointed to a booth. He went to it and saw Dr. Stein looking at the body of a young female.
"What do we got, Doc?" Joe asked.
"Victim's name is Annie. She's an Academy student. A Meister." Dr. Stein said. Joe looked at the body and noticed what looked like redness in the eyes.
"Possible petechial hemorrhaging in the eyes." Joe said.
"Combine that with the ligature marks around her throat," Dr. Stein said, "preliminary cause of death is strangulation. I'll know more after I perform an autopsy."
"Has the family been notified?" Joe asked.
"Not yet. Would you like to do it?" Dr. Stein asked. Joe sighed.
"I'm gonna have to." He said. Dr. Stein then held up her ID and Joe saw the address. He then turned and left, seeing Maka outside.
"Figured you would need someone with you." She said.
"I have to make a death notification." Joe said. Maka then nodded and Joe walked to her.
"Give me a rundown." She said. The two then started walking and Joe got serious.
"Victim's name is Annie. She was a Meister at the Academy. Prelim cause of death is strangulation. We'll know more after the autopsy." Joe spoke.
"Did she have a Death Weapon?" Maka asked.
"No way of knowing yet." Joe said.
"Hope the family can give us more information." Maka said.
"Same here." Joe spoke.
[At Annie's house….]
Joe knocked on the door and a man answered.
"Can I help you?" He asked.
"Is this the home of Meister Annie?" Joe asked. The man grew concerned.
"Who are you?" He asked. Joe and Maka showed their badges.
"I'm Special Agent Meister Joseph Reagan," Joe said, "this is my colleague, Special Agent Meister Maka Albarn. We're with ACIB."
"ACIB?" The man asked.
"Academy Criminal Investigative Bureau." Maka said. The man then grew concerned.
"Is everything alright? Is… is Annie in some sort of trouble?" He asked.
"Sir," Joe said, "may we come inside please?"
"Oh, of… of course. Please, come in." The man said. Joe and Maka then entered and the man closed the door. Joe took note of some photos of Annie.
"How do you know Annie exactly?" Maka asked.
"I'm her father." The man said. Joe then looked at him and motioned for him to sit down. The man complied and Joe sighed.
"Sir," Joe said, "I'm afraid we have some bad news."
"Bad news? Is it concerning Annie?" The man said.
"Yes, sir." Maka said.
"Wh-what happened? Is she alright?" The man asked. Joe sighed before going solemn.
"We regret to inform you that Annie was found deceased this morning. There appear to be signs of foul play." Joe said. The man was shocked, his lips quivering.
"W-what?" He asked.
"We're sorry for your loss, sir." Maka said. The man then broke down and started crying. Maka then sat next to him and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. Joe then pulled out a notepad and sat across from him.
"I know this is a difficult time for you," Joe said, "but I need to ask you some questions." The man sniffled and Maka grabbed a box of tissues, passing it to him. The man took a few and blew his nose.
"What do you need to know?" The man asked.
"Did Annie have any enemies? Any one who may have harbored resentment against her?" Joe asked.
"No," the man said, "everyone liked her. She was adored by her classmates."
"What about her love life? Any boyfriends, lovers, crushes?" Maka asked.
"She never talked to me about that. She kept that close to heart." The man said.
"Did she talk about her Death Weapon? What she did at the Academy?" Joe asked.
"Her Death Weapon was killed long ago. She interned at the library. H-how did she die?" The man asked.
"It's still early," Maka said, "but we believe she was strangled."
"Sir," Joe said, "do you have any idea why she would be at a bar?" The man looked at Joe in shock.
"S-she was found at a bar?" He asked.
"Yes, sir." Maka said.
"She had a job after school on the weekends as a cocktail waitress." The man said.
"Did she ever talk about it?" Maka asked.
"She always came home with tips. She even told me she would try and learn to bartend. She loved it." The man said.
"Did she ever complain about any customers who got too frisky? Coworkers that went too far?" Joe asked.
"No," the man said, "she never complained about it."
"Can you think of anything that could help us try and locate her killer?" Maka asked.
"No," the man said, "I can't. I…. I wish I could be of more help to you."
"If you can think of something else," Joe said, "just ask to speak with one of us." The man nodded and Maka and Joe stood up.
"Again," Maka said, "we're sorry for your loss."
"Thank you." The man said.
"We'll see ourselves out." Joe said. Joe and Maka then left the house, closing the door on their way before walking off, and Maka looked at Joe.
"You caught the photos, right?" She asked.
"Yeah. Each one was done professionally. She was more than a cocktail waitress." Joe said.
"You thinking escort?" Maka asked.
"Nah," Joe said, "I'm thinking she was a model."
"Only way to know is to ask her classmates." Maka said.

"So," the one ahead spoke, "you managed to trick someone into dating you. I guess they must be desperate to date a snitch like you."

"How about a Meister raping their Death Weapon in order to force them to do said crime?" Maka asked.
"What about robbing a bank with a Death Weapon?" Joe asked.
"Killing an innocent soul with a Death Weapon?" Maka asked. The ones who surrounded them were now shaking in fear.
"There are Meisters who abuse their power for reasons that can't be explained. Lord Death tasked me with going after them. However," Joe said, "it's getting to be too big a job to do on my own. Thankfully, I found some others who share my views. They joined me in my fight."
"What?!" The one behind asked.
"Where are they?!" The one ahead asked.
"Right behind you." A voice said. Joe looked and saw Kid. Maka looked at Joe and nodded. Joe then snapped his fingers and Shiori showed up with the others.
"Lord Death got us after he got your distress signal. He gave us our phones already." Soul said. Black Star then handed Maka hers and nodded. The group who surrounded Maka and Joe then tensed in fear.
"Why would you turn on fellow Meisters and Death Weapons?" One asked.
"Who said we did?" Soul asked.
"We're doing this to protect them." Liz said. Kid then walked past the first one and joined Joe and the others.
"Think you can take us ALL on?" Kid asked.
"By Death, you're the group who faced Asura!" The leader said.
"Unless you want to end up like him," Black Star said, "I suggest you leave them alone."
"Now!" Kid said. The group then backed off, but the leader approached. Joe gave a glare, but the leader held up a picture of Annie.
"I have information about her murder." They said.
"Who are you?" Joe asked.
"My name is Connor." They introduced.
"What's your relationship to Annie? Were you a friend?" Maka asked.
"No, ma'am. I was her husband." Connor said. Joe and Maka were stunned.
"Who're your friends?" Joe asked.
"They're my classmates. They had a bone to pick with you, Reagan." Connor said.
"Because of Ben?" Joe asked.
"Among others." Connor said.
"They shouldn't be using their training to commit crimes." Tsubaki said.
"Those who break the rules must be punished." Kid said.
"I understand that now. I'll tell everyone to stop calling you a snitch, Reagan. Please find out what happened to my wife." Connor said.
"Did her father know about you?" Joe asked.
"No," Connor said, "I talked to him after you had. He told me what happened to her."
"We'll do our best to find who killed her. You have our word." Maka said. Connor sniffled and nodded.
"That gives me a small comfort." He said.
"Do you know of anyone who might have had a grudge against her? Anyone she had problems with?" Joe asked.
"No," Connor said, "everyone liked her. H-how'd she die?"
"We believe she was strangled," Maka said, "but we'll know more after the autopsy." Connor then nodded.
"I'll be helping her father with the funeral arrangements." Connor spoke.
"We'll keep that in mind. Sorry for your loss." Joe said. Connor gave a hand signal and left. The others left with him and Joe, along with Maka, sighed.
'Thank fuck we didn't have to fight.' They thought. Kid then looked at them and noticed how they were.
"Is there something you need to tell us?" He asked.
"Not here." Joe said.
[In the Death Room….]
Maka and Joe just finished telling everyone the news and were expecting their reactions.
"You mean to tell us that all this time," Soul said, "Joe was trying to build up the courage to ask you out, but he never could because of how busy you were?!"

"Causing the both of you to fall for each other more?!" Black Star asked.
"Leading to you wanting to 'make love' with Joe in the alley we found him hanging in," Kid said, "but he brought up the fact that you two never went on a first date yet, and you told him you would if he married and impregnated you?!"
"Which he went through with?!" Dr. Stein asked.
"Leading to you two going to the Ward Office and ACTUALLY getting married?!?!" Lord Death, Shiori, Patty, and Liz asked. Joe and Maka looked at each other before Maka held his hand, intertwining her fingers with his. Joe returned the gesture and they looked at everyone.
"That's exactly right." Maka said.
"We have no regrets about it. If one of us has to leave the Academy," Joe said, "then I'll volunteer. I would do anything to be with Maka." Spirit was shocked, as was Dr. Stein, and Lord Death was looking like he was about to give a Reaper Chop. Joe immediately put Maka behind him to protect her. This action caused Lord Death to look at Spirit. He then held out his hand and gave a gleeful look.
"Pay up." He said.
"Huh?!" Joe asked.
"Wait, WHAT?!" Maka asked.
"YOU TWO MADE A BET ON IF WE'D START DATING OR NOT?!?!" Joe and Maka boomed, causing Lord Death and Spirit to fly to a pillar and break it, causing a partition to fall. Soul and Black Star both tensed up immediately after.
'We should NEVER piss them off!' They thought. Dr. Stein went to Spirit and Lord Death, helping them up.
"Did we just go skydiving?" Lord Death asked.
"I think my ears are bleeding." Spirit said. Lord Death then realized what had happened and looked at Maka and Joe. Spirit realized it as well.
"It appears we shouldn't have bet your personal lives. Our apologies. That said," Lord Death spoke, "I had the feeling that you two would start dating. However, Maka, your father said that you would never fall for anyone because of your relationship with him. You seemed to have proven him wrong. However, you both might want to ease up on your yelling. I may be Death itself, but even I felt the force behind that! I thought I had gone skydiving without a parachute!"
"Apology accepted," Maka said, blushing out of embarrassment, "and… we apologize for yelling that hard."
"Apology accepted. Still," Lord Death said, "it's about time you fell in love Maka! I was starting to think you were asexual."
"Asexual?" Patty asked.
"Someone who doesn't have sex." Kid said.
"That makes no sense. You don't need to have sex to be in a relationship. All you need is love!" Patty said. Kid went to make a comment, but stopped as he realized it.

"I believe the term you were looking for is 'aromantic,' Lord Death." Dr. Stein said.

"In all honesty," Dr. Stein said, "I thought she was going to be aromantic. Glad to know I was proven wrong."
"You two are okay with this?!" Spirit asked.
"Why wouldn't we be? Your daughter is old enough to make that type of decision herself. We have no say in the matter." Lord Death said.
"Well as her father," Spirit said, "I have a say, and I say there's no chance in Hell this will happen! You two need to go back to the Ward Office and correct this mistake right now!"

GEACK!" Spirit exclaimed, his soul seeming to have escaped him.
"Far as I'm concerned," Joe said, "you don't have a right to give marriage advice. So, please, kindly shut up." Spirit then glared and charged at Joe. Joe saw the blades come out of Spirit and glared, moving Maka out of the way.
"SPIRIT, STOP!!!!" Lord Death commanded.
"You're not WORTHY OF MAKA!!!!" Spirit yelled, moving to strike. Joe, however, dodged and balled up a fist.
'That little!' Spirit thought. He turned to face Joe, only to met with a menacing glare from him. Joe then charged fast and reared his fist back. Spirit turned pale as he soon saw Joe's power while he's unarmed. Dr. Stein took a drag of a cigarette he started smoking before he blew out the smoke.
"Aren't you going to stop him?!" Lord Death asked.
"Nope." Dr. Stein answered.
"Why not?!" Lord Death asked.
"Because Spirit just realized his mistake." Dr. Stein said.
"His mistake?" Lord Death asked.
"Joe has spent his entire time at the Academy unarmed until now," Dr. Stein said, "facing off against Rogue Meisters, Kishin, and Witches the entire time. How do you think he's managed to survive this long? Negotiating?" Lord Death then realized it and looked at Spirit.
"Joe mastered unarmed combat," Lord Death said, "and Spirit tried to attack him because he doesn't think Joe deserves Maka."
"Which Joe dodged. It was at this moment Spirit knew… he fucked up." Dr. Stein said. Joe went to throw the punch. Spirit tensed up as the only thing going through his mind was one word: DEATH. Joe threw the punch and Spirit clenched his eyes. However, Joe stopped just before he hit Spirit, sending a large gust of wind across his face. Spirit then opened his eyes and looked at Joe.
"How about now?" Joe asked, his eyes serious. Spirit then collapsed to his knees before tearing up.
"W-why didn't you kill me?" Spirit asked.
"Out of all the Death Scythes that Lord Death has," Joe said, "you're the only one who can turn INTO a scythe. Why would I leave Lord Death defenseless? Besides, you're my father-in-law. You don't have to like me, but I'm married to your daughter. Plus, who's gonna their grandchildren while Maka and I are working?" Spirit then lowered his head in shame and started crying. Maka then walked to Joe and hugged him from behind. Spirit then looked and saw Maka kiss Joe on the cheek.
"When do you want the wedding to be?" Spirit asked. Maka smiled and looked at Joe.
"Is today alright with you?" She asked. Joe looked at her and smiled.
"Whatever day works best for you, hon." He answered. The two kissed sweetly and Spirit cried more tears.
'I was a total idiot. He not only deserves her,' Spirit thought, 'but the two of them are perfect for each other. How could I try and prevent them from keeping each other?'
"Now," Joe said, "onto business. Are the autopsy results in?"
"Ah," Dr. Stein said, "yes. Cause of death is Asphyxiation. I managed to get some pictures of the ligature marks. They seem to resemble a fabric of some type. I'm running tests now."
"Thank you." Joe said.
"I also found something else." Dr. Stein said.
"What is it?" Maka asked.
"The victim was pregnant." Dr. Stein said. This caused Maka and Joe to look at him in shock.
"How far along?" Joe asked.
"About three or four weeks." Dr. Stein said.
"She was still in the first trimester." Maka said.
"Was her husband the father?" Joe asked.
"I ran a paternity test. Connor was a 100% match." Dr. Stein said.
"Do you think Connor knew?" Maka asked.
"No way of telling." Joe said.
"We could ask him." Maka said.
"No need to ask. He knew of Annie's pregnancy. I was there when she told him." Lord Death said.
"When was this?" Maka asked.
"Three days ago." Lord Death said.
"Was anyone upset at the fact they were having a baby? Upset that they got married?" Joe asked.
"Come to think of it," Lord Death said, "there was one person who didn't agree with their decision."
"Who?" Maka asked.
[In front of the DWMA Mission Board….]
Someone was looking at the board, trying to find a mission.
