Chapter 11
Fin and Bruno were down in the lab trying to find out what was taking so long with the DNA they'd asked the techs to run. Bruno was getting antsy. Their serial rapist turned murderer could be out stalking his next victim and here they were having to practically beg for results from the rape kits and Renee Perry's body.
"Come on Eddie. Our guy is out there right now. We could be looking at another dead body any minute," Detective Bruno was trying to impress upon the tech the severity of situation.
"Do you know how many times a day I hear that?" Fuentes gave him a look.
"I'm not the kind of guy who likes to pull rank and I won't, but Bruno isn't lying. His last victim was only fourteen, man. Worse still, there's an innocent guy in jail serving time for something our serial rapist did," Fin tried his hand at cracking the tech's façade.
"Yeah and one of the cases in that stack in front of you had two kids under the age of ten murdered by some scum bucket who thought they didn't deserve to live. There is procedure and your case isn't any worse than any other case in the pile. Human beings are awful to one another," Fuentes wasn't budging. Fin heaved a sigh. The tech was right and he knew that this was a long shot, but they had to try. Right now, the case was dead in the water. That would mean more time for Pup Peters to spend in jail for something he didn't do.
"That's a nice watch you got there," Bruno's tone and demeanor shifted as he spoke to Fuentes. Fin gave him a look, not sure where he was going with this.
"It's just a Seiko. My wife teases me because every phone's got a clock, but it never comes off my wrist," the tech heaved a sigh.
"Well as a fellow horologist I can understand. You know what this is don't you?" Bruno flashed the watch on his wrist.
"A Patek? Is that real?" Fuentes wanted to know.
"I splurged a little after my settlement," the detective removed it from his wrist and tossed it to the tech. He caught it, looking at it like it was the greatest treasure on the planet.
"You rush that DNA, it's yours," Bruno told him. Eddie nodded and quickly ducked into the lab, intent on getting those samples processed.
"Damn," Fin said.
"It worked, didn't it?" Bruno gave him a look.
"I'm not arguing, but don't let the Captain find out," Fin told him as they headed out of the lab. While they waited for the DNA, there were other cases that needed their attention back at Bronx SVU.
Meanwhile, Olivia was listening to Duarte in her office as he explained why he didn't have time to notify her or anyone else in SVU about the raid that scooped up two BX9 members. Given the evidence found on the rape trees, it didn't matter what gang they were a part of, they were under arrest for rape – multiple counts. The guns and drugs found in their apartments were just icing on the cake as far as Olivia was concerned. She wanted to tear into him, but it wouldn't do the case any good. Oscar Papa was the goal. He needed to go down for what he did to her and what he did to Noah. A knock on the door interrupted them.
"What's up Rollins?" Her Captain wanted to know.
"We have a situation," the blonde told her.
"What kind of situation?" Olivia raised an eyebrow. They were eyeball deep in quite a few situations right now.
"One of our perps, Bugbear, as he's called… he was stabbed to death at Rikers about half an hour ago," Amanda explained. Olivia slammed her fist on her desk.
"Is Hector Suarez safe?" Duarte asked.
"He's under police protection at the hospital. Somehow, I don't think protective custody did much for Bugbear so what do you want to do with Hector?" Amanda wanted to know.
"We'll think of something. In the meantime, I want Velasco down at the hospital, making sure we have protection for Hector," Olivia said.
"You got it," Amanda nodded before heading out of the doorway. Olivia picked up her phone and texted Elliot. She wanted to get Albert out of the hospital and safely away now that they knew Oscar Papa had already struck one of his own.
