Kim Campbell was in her office, putting her laptop into her bag. She was leaving work later than usual for a Friday, but she had wanted to get all her paperwork done so she could relax when she got home. She always got more paperwork done at school than she did at home.
She picked up the files she needed, along with her bag and left her office. Now all her paperwork was done, all she had to do was drop it off and leave a couple of papers on Rachel's desk for her to sign on Monday. Then she could go home.
...
Meanwhile, in Rachel's office, things weren't going well. The contractions had suddenly ramped up in intensity and were back to back, leaving Rachel only one or two seconds to catch her breath. She let out another blood curdling scream, tears rolling down her cheeks as she gripped Eddie's arm tightly.
She couldn't ignore the pressure in-between her legs anymore, it was unbearable. She bore down uncontrollably, groaning into a push, whimpering as she felt the baby move downward. Eddie seemed oblivious to what was happening.
"Eddie?" She whispered
He looked up at her, concern clouding his eyes.
"The baby's coming...I can't... help me" she whimpered between moans
She screamed into another push, her hand trembling as she gripped his hand tightly.
"Alright, Rach. It's ok; everything's going to be just fine." He replied calmly, even though he was panicking inside
He helped her to take her trousers and underwear off. His eyes widened in shock when he saw the top of the baby's head already in view, moving further forwards as Rachel pushed again, her cries of pain threatening to break his heart. He didn't know what he was doing. Even though delivering a baby seemed relatively straightforward, so much could go wrong, and that scared him. But he pushed his fears aside, focussing on Rachel. She needed him.
"You're doing great, Rach. I can see the head already" he reassured
She ignored him; the only thing she could focus on was the pain. Everything else seemed to fade away, silenced by the agony she was in. She pushed again with a pain filled groan, blindly reaching for Eddie's hand to squeeze.
Kim walked through the empty corridors and up the stairs to Rachel's office.
Unfazed by the fact that the office door was closed, she pushed on the handle, frowning as it didn't budge. Rachel always left the office door unlocked.
"Hello?" She heard a voice call from the other side of the door
It was Eddie.
"Eddie?" She frowned
What was going on?
On the other side of the door, Eddie breathed a sigh of relief at the sound of Kim's voice.
"Kim! Oh thank god! We're locked in! Finn Sharkey took the office key!" Eddie explained hurriedly
"We?" Kim frowned
That was when Kim heard a cry of pain. She knew it was Rachel immediately, but she needed confirmation.
Eddie sighed. Did the details really matter right now?
"Rachel's in here, she's... in labour. Can you let us out?"
Kim frowned, this didn't make any sense.
Rachel was pregnant?
And in labour?
"Kim?" Eddie called
Kim snapped out of her thoughts, grabbing her keys out of her pocket. She found her office key, pushing it into the lock. The door swung open as Kim ran in. The site before her was a shock.
She hadn't believed Eddie when he said Rachel was pregnant, let alone in labour. And yet here she was, heavily pregnant, sat on the floor and shaking in pain. Kim had a lot of questions, but now wasn't the time. She grabbed her phone from her pocket, dialling 999 and requesting an ambulance. Once the ambulance was confirmed to be on its way, she crouched down beside Rachel. Rachel looked at her painfully, pleading with her for help. Kim grabbed her free hand, squeezing it reassuringly.
Rachel cried out, moaning into another push. The pain was so intense, the burning sensation causing her to scream, so painful and relentless, she thought it would finish her off. She shifted uncomfortably. Her whole body felt like it was on fire, her skin felt like it was being melted off. Eddie watched as the baby's head moved further forward towards him, sliding out fully into his hand. Rachel sighed in relief as the burning sensation temporarily eased.
"The head is out Rach, you're doing great, love" Eddie encouraged
"Not long now" Kim whispered, squeezing her hand
Rachel moaned tiredly as another contraction began. She pushed hard, determined for this to be over. She was exhausted, but she wanted to see her baby. She couldn't give up yet.
The burning sensation returned, but she ignored it, bearing down uncontrollably. She screamed painfully as the baby's shoulders slid out with ease, the contraction died away with it.
As she breathed heavily, she looked at Eddie. His eyes were full of love for her. He smiled at her encouragingly. She was doing amazing.
"One more, Rach. One more and it'll be over" he promised
She nodded, taking one final deep breath, she used the last ounce of strength she had and pushed hard.
In an instant, the pain stopped. The room was silent for what felt like ages, before the cry of an infant filled the room.
Eddie caught the tiny little girl in his arms, wrapping her in his jacket as she began to wail loudly. He smiled at her, his eyes welling up with tears. She was absolutely perfect.
"Hello, little one" he whispered, kissing her forehead softly
Rachel was crying, sobbing in relief. The sound of her baby crying was music to her ears. She'd been waiting, longing to hear that cry for nine months. She sat back against the sofa, relief flooding through her.
Kim had tears in her eyes too. She hadn't been expecting such a magical moment to like this to have happened today.
"It's a girl, Rach. We have a daughter" Eddie smiled, rocking the tiny baby in his arms
Rachel smiled. She was desperate to hold her, but she seemed perfectly comfortable in her Father's arms.
Eddie carefully passed the little girl to Rachel.
"Hello darling" she whispered to the little girl
The little baby settled instantly at the sound of her Mother's voice, drifting off into sleep. Rachel smiled, kissing her head softly. She was beautiful.
Eddie moved to sit next to Rachel. He gazed at their daughter as she slept contentedly in Rachel's arms. He loved them both so much.
Rachel caught his gaze, staring back at him lovingly. She leaned in, catching her lips with his. This moment couldn't be any more perfect.
"I love you" she whispered softly
"I love you too. You did great" Eddie smiled
"She's perfect" Rachel commented, staring at their daughter
Eddie agreed. She was almost a mirror image of Rachel. From the shape of her tiny lips, to her olive skin and light brown hair. Eddie and Rachel were mesmerised by her. She'd stolen their hearts.
"So what happens now?" Eddie asked
"Do you want to move in with me?" Rachel offered
"If you'll have me" Eddie shrugged
"You have my approval. I think you'd better ask this little one though" she replied, smiling at her daughter
"What do you think, sweetheart? Should Daddy move in with us?" Rachel cooed, stroking her daughter's head softly
As if on cue, the baby grunted, shifting in Rachel's arms. Eddie chuckled.
"I think that's a yes" Rachel giggled, pecking him on the lips
Eddie smiled
"I'm all yours then, Rach" he shrugged, kissing her back
Rachel's smile only grew bigger.
Everything was so perfect all of a sudden; it was falling into place all at once. And she couldn't be happier. Eddie and Rachel had never thought they'd say it, but they owed Finn Sharkey a thank you for locking them in Rachel's office. Had he not, none of this would have happened!
Eddie stared lovingly as Rachel bonded with her daughter. He suddenly remembered they couldn't call her 'The baby' or 'Baby Girl' for the rest of her life.
"This little one needs a name" Eddie added, looking at their sleeping little girl
Rachel stared down at their daughter thoughtfully. She hadn't thought of any names in the last nine months. She'd wanted to wait until she'd seen her little one for the first time before deciding on a name.
Only one name stood out to her in that moment. It was one she knew Eddie loved for a girl. They had spent one evening last year, discussing baby names. Eddie had mentioned this name and she had fallen in love with it. Now, it was the only one she could think of that would fit their baby perfectly.
"What about... Olivia?" She suggested
Eddie's eyes sparkled. She'd remembered it was his favourite name for a girl. He nodded. It fitted their daughter perfectly.
Rachel and Eddie looked down at their little one with the biggest smiles on their faces.
"Welcome to the world, Olivia Lawson"
The end.
