Soon, the elevator stopped, and opened up to reveal the headmaster's office, Ozpin's office. The members of team RWBY and JNPR looked in awe.
"Please. Make yourselves comfortable." Said Ozpin.
Weiss looked shocked. "I-I'm sure we can all just stand Mr. Ozpi-"
"Don't have to tell us twice!" Everyone went to get a seat, leaving Weiss in a pretty awkward situation.
Ozpin chuckled and asked again. "Well, Ms. Schnee?"
"...I'll just sit over there." She said as she took a seat next to her team.
"I-I understand how you feel, Weiss. I mean, this is our first time in the headmaster's office!" Despite who he is, Weiss did smile at the fact that Jaune seems to get how she's feeling.
"It is pretty big, and high up, and beautiful." Said Pyrrha.
Ozpin smiled. "I'm glad you all like it." He said as he took a seat. "Now, on to the topic at hand. I'm sure you're all well acquainted with our little 'devil' friend, Tanya." Everyone nodded. Ruby lowered her head.
"It was definitely strange." Ren started. "One moment my teammates and I are sleeping-"
"And the next, BAM! Someone breaks into our room and starts blowing a whistle like we're in the Atlas military or something!" Said Nora. "Like, seriously. You could've just asked."
Weiss sighed. "Just so you know, the Atlas military doesn't wake its troops up with whistles unless it's an emergency. Then again, that's not the point."
Yang nodded. "Yeah. You guys probably want a bit more info on Tanya. If Ruby's fine with it, I have no problem telling you guys."
"They deserve to know Yang. I'd say everyone does, but probably not all at the same time," Ruby looked sheepish, or rather, kicked-puppy-ish, "I don't want people to start avoiding me."
Six of the seven other students in the room frowned. It must have happened before.
The seventh, Yang of course, was scowling. Which for the others was proof positive on their unknowingly collective theory.
Ozpin just sat quietly. Placidly letting things unfold as they will.
"Okay." Yang turned to the others. "So, as some of you know, Tanya just... appeared one day when Ruby was five. And I mean it when I say that she just appeared."
"So you don't know what caused Tanya's birth." Pyrrha said.
"Exactly," Yang nodded, "It was the middle of the night when dad found her downstairs. The lights were on and dad assumed one of us was still up. Then he found Ruby messing with his tax papers and got mad. However, when he saw the papers, he found that the taxes were already half done, correctly, and considering that I was asleep, the only person who could've possibly done it was Ruby. So dad asked her, and when she answered she said 'yes'."
"However, something was off, right?" asked Blake.
"Exactly," Yang addressed the back cat. "For starters, the fact that she just said yes was already a red flag, considering that Ruby would normally boast about something like that. At first dad thought Ruby was just tired, but that wouldn't make sense considering how much concentration it would take for her to do something like taxes at her age. So he asked her again, and she said, and I quote, 'I said yes. What more do you want, father?'. That caused dad to stumble back out of shock and he ended up falling down, which actually woke me up, but that's not important. Ruby went to him, but she didn't help dad get up, she just... stared at him with cold eyes. He mumbled something, what it was, he still won't tell us, but before Ruby could answer,"
"She sneezed." Nora finished.
"Yep. You can probably guess what happened, but I'll just tell you anyway. Ruby 'woke up' and was obviously confused as to why she was downstairs, there was silence for a little bit, before I came downstairs and broke it with my own question as to where the noise came from, and that's pretty much everything worth mentioning from that night. The next day, we took Ruby to a doctor and they performed some tests, but Tanya wouldn't wake up until dad remembered that Ruby changed back because of a sneeze, so they made Ruby sneeze and that was my first time meeting Tanya. Few more days later, a few more tests later, and it was obvious what the problem was. And so, Ruby was officially diagnosed with a split personality disorder, one that we still don't know the cause for." With the backstory over, Yang turned to her classmates. "The story is longer than that, but the details are either boring or something that I think should be saved for later. Now, any questions?"
"... Wow..."
Blake spoke first. "Not a question, but wow. I can't imagine having to grow up with someone like that. That must've been difficult for you, your father, and Ruby."
Yang shook her head. "Tanya was actually really tame in the early years. She was cold, but not sadistic. Though that could be due to her age at the time. She ended up staying that way for a bit until she and Ruby had their very first 'argument'."
"Wait, they argued?" Jaune asked
Ruby answered this one. "We still argue even to this day. Though I do care about Tanya, I'm not sure if she cares about me. We can hardly find common ground on anything. We can't ever seem to get along. It used to be like normal sibling arguments, but now it seems like we actually 'hate' each other..."
Ren asked the next question. "How would an argument with someone, who's essentially yourself, work?"
"Paper and pepper." Ruby said flatly. "And lots of them."
Yang started to explain. "Basically, one time Ruby sneezed while she was eating a mountain of cookies-"
"WHICH I EARNED BY THE WAY!" Ruby argued.
"Right... Anyway, Tanya was less than pleased about it since she asked me and dad to tell her to stop multiple times. So she decided the best way to do it was to tell Ruby herself. So she got a piece of paper and wrote down a complaint. Then she got some pepper and made herself sneeze for the first time. When Ruby woke up she read the complaint and... she wasn't going to let Tanya have the last word. So she wrote something among the lines of. 'Why don't you mind your own business you big Meany?' Then Ruby made herself sneeze so Tanya could read it-"
"And things got out of hand from there." Pyrrha finished. "They ended up going back and forth with their argument because neither of them wanted to let up."
Yang nodded. "Eventually both me and dad had to step in and calm them both down. And ever since that day, the two can't seem to stay out of each other's business, always arguing about something or the other. That's when Tanya started to get a shorter temper, but she still wasn't sadistic... At least until an incident in Ruby's old grade school..."
"An incident?" Weiss asked
"Yeah... I would like to tell you about it, but Ruby should be the one to do that."
Everyone turned to Ruby, "I... I'm not ready for that. Sorry..."
"Don't be," said Ren, "I have things that I would rather not reveal myself."
"Thanks for understanding."
Weiss chimed in "This is all well and good, but I still have one question," she looked Ruby square in the eye, "Though I'm not sure if I can get a proper answer since Tanya isn't here."
"Oh? What is it?" Yang asked
"Why didn't Tanya try to stop herself from sneezing? She could've covered or held her nose, right? Yeah it's painful, but there are options."
"... Welllllll, about that..."
[Flashback to 7 years ago.]
Tai held a cookie in his hand. "I told you no cookies until you're done with your homework, sweetie."
"Aww, but daddyyyyyy!" Ruby whined. "I want it now!"
"Sorry, but no means no- AH!" Tai flinched as Ruby jumped up to get the cookie. "Hey!"
"I want the cookie!"
"Is that how it is? Very well." Tai held it higher. "Grab it if you can!"
Ruby pouted and continued to jump, but every time she did, Tai moved the cookie in another direction. For Tai this was all in good fun, but Ruby was determined to actually get the cookie. So she got on a table and jumped at her father, knocking them both down and a jar of pepper.
Ruby stood up triumphantly as she held her prize high, but then the pepper got to her nose and she started to panic. If she sneezed, then Tanya would make sure she didn't eat the cookie, and of course, Ruby hated the thought of not eating what she worked hard to get. So she decided.
"I-I'm... n-not... letting... her... outttt!" Remembering what people usually did to stop themselves from sneezing, Ruby pinched her nose and let the pressure fill her head instead... that was a bad idea.
Sputtering from the feeling of her brain bursting like a bubble, she stumbled into the wall and fell onto her butt.
"Ruby! Are you okay!?" Tai asked?
"Y-Yeah... I'm fine daddy-
"What's going on!? Why am I up!? And why can I only see out of one eye!?"
"... come again?"
"Father, what's going on-"
"What am I saying? Daddy, it's not me-"
"Who's talking over me!?"
"You're the one talking over me! And why can't I move the other half of my body!?"
"... Wait..."
"Are you...?"
"...SON OF A BI-"
"SCUIT!"
"DON'T INTERRUPT ME!"
"I'M NOT PUTTING MONEY IN THE SWEAR JAR BECAUSE OF YOU TANYA!"
"TO HELL WITH THAT DAMNED JAR, GET OUT OF MY SPACE ALREADY!"
"NO YOU! I WAS UP FIRST! AND YOU SHOULDN'T TALK TO YOUR OLDER SISTER LIKE THAT"
"FOR THE LAST GODDAMN TIME! WE! ARE! NOT! SISTERS! WE! ARE! ONE!"
Tai couldn't believe what he was hearing. One thing was clear though. "We need to get to a doctor."
[End of flashback]
"It was later revealed that stopping a sneeze from happening causes Ruby and Tanya to basically merge. It wasn't that they were actually both there, it was more like their brain was freaking out and didn't know who should be awake, so it was as if they were both up. With Ruby and Tanya's personalities constantly overlapping each other as a result. Not only that but the brain was also confused as to who should move the body, so each time one personality was active, one half of the body was active."
"IT WAS MISERABLE!" Ruby shouted.
"And ever since, both Ruby AND Tanya decided they would never try to force themselves to stop sneezing ever again. The only way to not sneeze is to hope it's a false alarm."
Everyone was speechless, still trying to rap their heads around what they just heard.
"...So how did they get back to normal?" Asked Weiss
"They had to stop themselves from sneezing again. Normal sneezes didn't help."
"Oh."
Silence once again filled the office.
Ozpin spoke up. "That was quite the tale."
Ruby looked at the headmaster. "You said you knew about Tanya. So why did you let me come here?"
Ozpin chuckled. "I'm afraid that story's gonna have to wait," he shook his head, "However, I will say this. If I turned away every student with a problem, some of my most successful students wouldn't have come here. I see potential in both you AND Tanya, Ms. Rose, and I know you two can achieve great things." He looked at the others. "That goes for the rest of you as well. Each of you is here for a reason, you just have to find it." He was looking at Jaune during that last part. "Anyway, I believe it's-"
*Ding*
"...It's time you students get back to your dorms." Ozpin finished as the elevator door opened to reveal Glynda Goodwitch
"Mr. Ozpin, I have something to discuss- ?!" She paused as she noticed the eight students. "And... to what do I owe the pleasure of seeing you here, members of team RWBY and JNPR?"
All the kids tried to find some reason, but Ozpin just chuckled. "Nothing, Glynda. I just wanted to talk to my new students. Is that so wrong?"
Glynda looked shocked, and then a little annoyed. "It's not very professional of the headmaster to do private talks with his students like this."
"I know, I know. We just finished."
"That's not the point... *sigh* Well, whatever. Anyway, children, it's getting late. Head back to your dorms and get some sleep."
"Yes ma'am!" The members of team RWBY and JRNP said in unison.
So all eight of them went back down to the school. As soon as they were gone, Glynda turned to Ozpin. "Now that the children are gone, let's get back to the reason I'm here."
[2 hours later. Team RWBY's dorm]
"For the last time, Ruby. You don't need to apologize." Said Yang
"Still, I-"
"It's beyond your control, right? I say you're fine, Ruby."
"Yeah, but Tanya-"
"Never mind Tanya. We'll learn to deal with her, you just focus on what you'll do while you're you."
"Still, if Tanya does anything rash I might not be able to make any friends. I don't want people to be afraid of me because of her, not again..."
Yang fought to suppress a growl as she put her hand on Ruby's shoulder. "Don't worry about that. I'll try my best to keep Tanya in check for you. Besides, the two of us need to talk."
Ruby hesitated for a bit, but she quickly cheered up. "Okay, I trust you. As for me, I'm gonna pull an all-nighter so I can be a better leader!"
Blake and Yang laughed at the statement, causing Ruby to pout. Weiss however didn't "If you actually plan on staying up you'll need some coffee. How do you take it?"
Ruby got a bit nervous. "Well... I-"
"She doesn't drink coffee. Tanya does." Said Yang Checkley
"Y-YAAAANNNG!" Ruby turned to Weiss "D-Don't listen to her! I'll have mine with cream and five sugars, thank you! Hmph!"
Weiss placed her hand on Ruby's shoulder. "Ruby... I... *sigh* I think you have what it takes to be a good leader, regardless of your..."
"Sister."
"Right. Your 'sister'. Just know that I am going to be the best teammate you'll ever have. And who knows? I have experience with someone who has split personalities. Seven of them, to be precise. So maybe I can help with Tanya too?"
"...Thanks Weiss."
As Ruby was about to hug her, Blake chimed in. "Since both Weiss and Yang are helping out when it comes to Tanya, you can bet that I'll help too. And I'm sure team JRNP will as well. We all have your back Ruby."
Now Ruby was tearing up. "Thank you... All of you." They all nodded. "Now then. How about we get ready for tomorrow!?"
With grins (or a small smirk in the case of the more stoic among them) the assembled group spoke out with exuberance.
"YES MA'AM!"
[? ? ?]
The two 'figures' ran down a hall until they came to the location of the noise. Once they got there, they looked on in horror.
"They... They're all..."
"Dead...? Oh God..."
In the middle of the 'bodies' stood a figure with blood on their face.
"Why...? Why did you do this...?"
The figure looked at them, smiled, ...and gave a very chilling, creepy, and eerily soft laugh in response.
