Chapter 52

Swinging down into the Financial District, Spider-Man grimaced as he saw the lingering damage, there was sand everywhere. Sandman had been busy roving through the streets it seemed.

'Uh-oh, this doesn't look good.' He thought to himself. 'He...could he be…?'

He soon got his answer and groaned in dismay as he swung around and landed on a window ledge, shaking his head as he saw right ahead was Sandman, using his powers to rampage around the district, in a giant size.

"Haven't dealt with this in a while." He muttered.

Sandman was laughing and pulled himself up high, arms raised and fists forming into spiked balls.

"Time to smash some more fools." He laughed. "You think you can stop me, come and try."

The sounds of gunfire, which had little effect on Sandman told Spider-Man what he needed to know. The police were here and were trying to stop Sandman.

'But that's not gonna work...they should know that.' Spider-Man thought.

Which made him reconsider, it was starting to make more sense now as he looked around the area and caught sight of some people fleeing. The police were trying to distract Sandman and buy time for people to escape.

"I better give them a hand." He decided. "But I need to know exactly what's going on."

So he quickly resumed swinging, heading for where the police presence was at the thickest, all while praying Sandman wasn't actually getting anybody as he swung his weaponised arms around to smash up nearby buildings.

Hopper grimaced as the latest attempt to distract Sandman didn't seem to do much, he was just relieved they'd already evacuated the vast majority of the distract, save the places Sandman had already attacked before they could respond to the danger. That was when he heard the sound, the other officers heard it too and they all expressed relief, the sound of web-shooters.

"Hey guys." Spider-Man greeted them, there was an edge to his voice, but he was focused. "What's happened so far?"

"He just launched a sudden attack, around the same time Mysterio attacked Times Square." Hopper explained. "We've got three hundred people missing, twenty injured and six dead so far. We've managed to get everyone else clear of the current danger zone. But if he moves out of this district...we've gonna have problems."

Spider-Man nodded. "Yeah, I'll bet. We need water, plenty of water."

Hopper sighed. "Where are we gonna...Hold on a moment, I might have an idea."

"Whatever it is, I love it. But until we can make it work...I'll have to lure him somewhere, I know just the place." Spider-Man replied.

Hopper nodded warily and went to make a call on his radio, the other officers stood ready, trying to distract Sandman was still making them uneasy, he wasn't reacting to their efforts and they were worried he already knew what they were planning and was just toying with them.

Taking the situation in hand as best he could, Spider-Man swung up until he was high enough for Sandman to see him easily despite his now giant size.

"Hey, boy is this giving me deja-vu." Spider-Man remarked loudly.

Sandman laughed. "Ah, there's the annoying little insect. I wondered when you'd show up."

Spider-Man reacted at once. "Um insect, last time I checked I'm Spider-Man, that would make me an arachnid instead of an insect."

"You're really trying to be funny." Sandman scoffed. "You've got guts coming after me, but those poor people in Times Square are not gonna be happy you left them to-"

"Good job my friends El and Kali went to take care of him while I came here then, huh?" Spider-Man interrupted.

Sandman's smug expression fell. "What...that's not, you-?"

That was when Spider-Man saw that he had made the right move, it was clear his enemies did not expect him to recruit help, to have allies.

"C'mon then, what's next?" Spider-Man challenged as he swung in a certain direction.

Sandman growled and swung at him with his arm but Spidey quickly avoided the blow and kept going, so angry at being outsmarted like that, Sandman followed after him without thinking, ignoring the police in the process.

'I just hope this works, it's my only chance right now, unless Hopper's plan comes through.' Spider-Man thought desperately. 'There it is.'

With that he swung towards the Fisk Construction Site he had been looking for, it was the biggest source of water he could find in the Financial District right now.

Once they were both in the construction site, Spider-Man fired a few webs, making sure that the large water outlet within the site was open, no hose attached to it, while the webs he fire struck the buttons he was aiming for. He swiftly dodged the attack, plus another as Sandman attacked him rather aggressively.

"Oh, you think I'm gonna fall for that again?!" Sandman cried out. "Nice try, but I'm onto you, web-head."

Spider-Man grimaced and landed on a steel beam after avoiding another attack. "Well, that's unfortunate, but you never know...there might be something else that'll work against you."

Sandman just scoffed while Spider-Man prayed that his bluff would turn out to not be a bluff and that Hopper would come through for him.

"What are you talking about. I've got your plan worked out and if you think I'm gonna let you get anywhere near that valve you've got another thing coming." Sandman taunted him.

That was when the sirens began blaring and it was then both Sandman and Spider-Man realized they were surrounded by fire engines, all set up with their hoses ready to be used, meanwhile the police were also in position, Hopper smirked.

"Hey Spidey." The chief fireman called out. "I hear you need a lot of water."

Spider-Man laughed. "Let's go boys, nighty-night, Sandman."

As he said that he quickly got out of the way

Sandman panicked as he realized what was happening. "No, no, NO!"

But it was no good and, with Spider-Man also hitting the valve, the firefighters unleashed the water from their hoses too, absolutely drenching him in water, damaging his abilities and forcing him to shrink down from his giant size, finally, the water let up but the damage was done and Sandman sunk right down into a puddle of wet sand.

"Quick." Hopper cried out.

That was when Spidey acted quickly and soon had Sandman sealed in a special vial, something else Dr. Connors had helped him create.

Spider-Man let out a soft sigh.

"Alright, that's that over."

He nodded to Hopper who got to work trying to get things under control in the Financial District while he swung up onto a nearby rooftop.

"Alright guys, one down." He said.

Dustin replied at once. "Yeah, that was...actually pretty cool. I think we'll have a chance to get through this quickly."

Lucas agreed. "Yeah, which means you can get to Mike sooner."

"I hope so." He said before making another call. "El, how are things going over there."

He wasn't not expecting her reply.

"It's not bad, we're both fine." She said. "But there's a, um...complication."
