Love Knows Not Time: An Outlander Tale [Epilogue]
Several weeks went by and then came the day Catriona and Jeffrey were to leave for the boat to America from Glasgow where the army was stationed. Goodbye, Matron Brown. Goodbye, my dear Catriona. It has been a pleasure working with you. Stay safe in America. We will, Matron. Goodbye, Major Foster. Goodbye, Surgeon Brown. And thank you for all your care of me. Will you write us? Of course we will, Matron. As soon as we can. And then the ship was out of sight. I can't believe we're finally underway, Jeffrey. Neither can I, Catriona. What will we do when we get to America, Jeffrey? Oh, I might take up land for farming in North Carolina. That sounds like a fine idea. Catriona, those things that you said would happen in the future, what are they? Well, a decade from now there will be a war in America between the British and the French and their Indian allies for control over land. And who will win this war? The British will, Jeffrey. And then a decade after that there will be another war, this time between the British soldiers and the ordinary people of America. The colonists, you mean? Yes, Jeffrey. And who wins? The colonists do, I'm afraid. And some of them are my ancestors. And what happens to those who support the Crown? They either stay in America or are forced to go to Canada. Canada? That is what New France becomes after what they call The French and Indian War in America. I'm glad you've told me this, Catriona. Is there any place where it would be unsafe to settle? Yes, New York and Massachusetts. And the Ohio Valley. That is where both wars will start from. I hope we will have a happy future in spite of these things you've told me will happen. So do I, Jeffrey. And I love you very much. And I hope that love will be enough to keep both of us and our future family safe. And I love you, Catriona. And no matter where we go, I will always keep you and our family safe.
