Life got downright dangerous and weird the closer they got to the holidays, or at least even more dangerous and weirder than usual. Many stores shut their doors for all kinds of reasons, the supernatural virus, theft, lack of supplies and the occasional creature wandering in and killing staff and customers. Many of the small store owners who still had their doors open were packing heat and weren't fucking around with anyone or anything. There was no more credit, just cash and carry but soon enough the world would become a bartering system.
This didn't affect Dean much at all, guns and violence were par for the course most of his life. He had stashed away an insane amount of liquor, cigarettes, sugar, candy, weapons and anything else he thought they'd need to barter with. This was thanks to the cash he found in the back of the dead kidnapper's vehicle and things he stole from the sites of various hunts. The mansion alone where Sam was kept was a treasure trove of jewelry, booze, weapons and equipment.
Dean Winchester took care of his own and he never wanted his baby brother to struggle for food or anything else for that matter. In the days after Dean woke up carrying Sam's mutated demon-supernatural virus, Dean felt more kick ass than ever and his senses were heightened far beyond a typical omega or one of the monsters they hunted.
For Sam, things weren't that easy. There was a darkness in him and he could feel it. He didn't know if it came about after the infection or if that darkness had always been inside him, just waiting for a trigger. He didn't tell Dean or Bobby but Sam started to get a rush from hunting, especially the killing part. If a stranger eyed up his brother or said something nasty, Sam envisioned stabbing their eyes out or gutting them and he found these thoughts disturbing.
The road ahead for the brothers was paved with broken glass and razor blades but Sam and Dean wouldn't be traveling it alone.
…..
Dean was on a solo mission and his target was Allmart. The supercenter was still open with the addition of metal detectors and rent-a-cops at the doors. Inside, the vast building was patrolled in every department by hired muscle who were ready, willing and able to take down an infected or some asshole wanting to make trouble. Dean left his gun in the car because he knew he'd get busted but covertly brought in his carbon fiber knife. The massive, far-reaching company wasn't about to let monsters, ghosts and supernatural sickness get in the way of business as usual. When Allmart stores and warehouses became empty, they'd close their doors and wait out the storm, that is if it ever ended.
The hunter went right to the omega wellness section and scoured the picked over shelves until he found what he was looking for, a pregnancy test. He grabbed one of each brand, not knowing which one was better, and hustled to the checkout where he paid cash then went to the store bathroom. Dean tore open the boxes and proceeded to urinate on all four of them, two from his penis and two from his vagina just to cover all the bases. He lined them up on counter on top of some brown paper towels and waited while he glanced over the instructions of each test.
A young omega named Alfie dashed through the door as if he was being chased and when he spotted a tall, strong omega chewing on a thumb nail, he went right up to Dean, looked down at the rows of tests and gave him an empathic smile.
Dean looked up from the tests, eyebrow cocked, "What do you want?"
Alfie leaned against the sink, "Nothing, I'm just hiding out."
"Don't ask…" Dean couldn't help himself, "Hiding from what?"
The omega with the bluest eyes this side of heaven, hitched his thumb toward the door, "There are some creepy guys following me around. I know they're going to follow me out to the parking lot and do something bad to me."
Dean's anger was immediate, "They can fuck right off. Stick with me and I'll get you out safe. Why are you outside, its dangerous out there."
Alfie was indignant, "I needed omega personal things and why should I go without just because there are bad people in the world?" He watched as the handsome omega looked down at the row of tests and slapped both hands on the counter, making Alfie jump.
"Sonofabitch!" He grabbed his hair and walked in circles, "I knew it, I knew it, this is my fault, what am I gonna do?" Dean stopped suddenly, rolled all the tests up in paper towel and shoved them in the pocket of his beat up leather coat. "Ok, this is what we're gonna do, you're going to help me shop and then…do you have a home?"
"No, I was living at a shelter but that's closed down now. I did stay at a church for awhile but the nun there got infected," Alfie looked down at the floor, ashamed, "I killed one her with the spear of the Archangel Michael."
"There was a literal angel in the church? I mean at this point it wouldn't shock me."
"No, it was a life-size figure by the alter. I'm not proud of what I've done, she was a good hearted woman of faith."
Leaving a defenseless person to fend for himself was a no go for Dean. He forgot about his baby on board and made a decision, "Your coming home with me. I know a place run by a good guy, his name is Cal and he's an omega like us. He takes in omegas who need help. Its almost Christmas and I've got some major shit going on right now so I can't say when I'll get you there. How does that sound?"
Alfie didn't have much choice so he put all his trust in this stranger, "That sounds good, thank you. My name's Alfie."
"I'm Dean."
…
The first thing the hunter did was confront the three predators hassling his rescue. Went right for them and stabbed the leader in the chest with his finger, enunciating every word in a deep voice.
"Stay away from him or so help me, I will end you."
The leader smiled at him with brown, stained teeth, "Aren't you a pretty thing, maybe we'll take you too."
Dean got closer, almost gagging on the man's breath, "If you leave him alone, I will shoot all three of you before you can even blink. Maybe I'll gut you and shoot the others…you can die with your intestines on your lap. That will attract the monsters and buddy, there are loads of them out there just waiting to rip up a piece of shit like you. I'm not pretty, I'm fuckin' dangerous." He patted the man's chest and took a step back, "So what's your next move, dick face?"
The leader had no doubt from the look in his eyes that this omega could indeed end him, it also concerned him that pretty boy had his hand in the pocket of his coat, perhaps handling a weapon. He had no idea it was a bundle of pregnancy tests and not a gun or knife. He decided this wasn't worth the effort and risk. There were plenty of people to take advantage of outside these walls. He brushed past his cohorts and they followed him through the exit doors as security watched.
Alfie excitedly grabbed Dean's arm, "You're awesome!"
"Well, its not killing an infected nun with the sword of Archangel Michael awesome but it's close."
His new friend made a face, "That's not funny."
They heard shouting and screams around them, a guard was down on the floor wrestling with an infected and another guard rushed over and shot it in the head.
"Come on Alfie, we need to hurry while there's a distraction."
Dean was upset to find the baby and children sections were picked over. He did score three infant-toddler camping style backpacks; he didn't need three but it never hurt to have a spare. While the disposable diapers and formula were guarded with a limit of two per customer, the section with cloth diapers and the like remained untouched. Dean cleaned out the cloth diapers and diaper covers of every size and all the giant diaper pins. Dean thought how foolish people were not to buy reusable over the disposal diapers but it seemed people still weren't thinking long term. He got his two and two on the disposables and formula and just hoped he'd produce enough milk. Just thinking about having boobs, little or not, made him nauseas.
The shelves were bare of strollers and cribs and Alfie could see the disappointment on Dean's face. "It's ok, we'll find something." He ignored Dean's grumbling and took the cart, disappearing around the corner. Alfie was back a few minutes later with a breast pump, baby bottles, about ten bottles of prenatal vitamins and some pacifiers. "See, I found all kinds of things."
"Wow man, thanks. I'm not…coping real well right now."
"Why am I telling a stranger that…I'm good, I'm coping, I'm Dean Winchester…"
The diminutive omega shrugged, "You saved me."
Holy crap, I changed Sam's diapers and now I'm gonna have to change my brother's baby's diapers…" when his body began to sway, Alfie got stern and took Dean by the arm, "Its going to be ok, really."
…
The ride home was filled with questions from Dean because he was using Alfie as a distraction. When they pulled up to the house, the Christmas tree was lit because Sam turned it on as a beacon and a welcome home for his brother who loved the color lights. Alfie's big eyes grew even bigger when he spotted the lite tree in the window.
"Dean, you're so lucky, just look at this place! Are you sure your brother and uncle won't get mad because you brought home a stranger?"
"Nah, the more the merrier. Besides, that ham in the fridge is the size of a basketball and as Bobby would say, it ain't gonna eat itself. Tomorrow night we feast, you better enjoy it because it might be the last ham we ever eat. Hell, it might be the last Christmas."
"Oh, I will, I like to eat even though I don't look it." Alfie noticed Dean's hand resting on his belly, over the leather coat, "It will be ok you know, my mom told me that when she found out she was pregnant, she didn't want me but once I was born she changed her mind and she loved me."
Dean glanced over at his new friend, "You know what, your right. I'm really am lucky."
