Dean's passenger didn't get to know much about him on that drive to where the uncle lived. He peppered the otherworldly beautiful omega with questions and either got a "don't wanna talk about it" or a shrug. The question that seemed to bother him the most was when Alfie asked who the father was of the baby he was carrying. He turned on the radio tuned to classic rock and belted out "More Than a Feeling" by Boston. End of conversation
They came upon an iron gate with "Singer Salvage" across the top and the big beast of a car rumbled down the driveway and up to a big, old house. The lit Christmas tree in the window put Alfie at ease, after all, serial killers surely don't decorate for Christmas. Dean told him to grab the bags of supplies but leave the baby stuff because he'd take those in himself.
Laden with bags, he followed his new friend to the front door where a grumpy looking older guy wearing flannel was waiting, they greeted each other and Dean told Bobby to help with the Alfie's bags. The man took the bags and nodded a greeting as if strangers showing up was an everyday occurrence. The warmth and the smell of good food hit him and Alfie felt he would be ok.
While Dean disappeared up some stairs, the grumpy guy introduced himself as Bobby and a very tall young man entered. His wolfish eyes swept over the Alfie, causing the omega to get all sorts of mixed feelings, most of them good. The tall guy was Sam, Dean's brother and when he smiled, two deep dimples appeared and when the alpha shook his hand it engulfed Alfie's.
Both men had an air of danger about them just like Dean but for some reason it didn't cause Alfie to feel uneasy at all, in fact it made him feel safe just like the first time he laid eyes on Dean. There was something about Sam though, he seemed a little feral as if his formative years were spent raised by wolves and later, he became domesticated. Dean gave Alfie the same feeling.
When Dean appeared again, he gave introductions and a brief overview of how they met, making a point to leave out the pregnancy test part. As soon as Bobby left the room Sam hugged his brother a little too long and a little too tight. He had a view of Alfie over Dean's shoulder and the alpha wasn't shy at all to let those big hands and long fingers travel down his brother's back and grasp the omega's ass with both hands causing Dean to gasp and let out deep moan. One of those big hands slipped between the omega's legs then squeezed and rubbed the denim and Sam made a show of sniffing then licking the palm of his hand after and winked at red faced Alfie.
Sam couldn't tear his nose away from Dean's skin, especially his crotch and pits. Something was a little different and it was driving the Alpha crazy trying to figure it out. The very faint smell of urine that clung to the denim crotch of Dean's pants caused Sam to feel not just aroused but protective and tender.
Dean came to his senses and shoved hard to get Sam to back off. "Not the time or place, buddy."
Alfie couldn't tear his eyes away from the whole scene playing out because the players were so sensual and the smell of the comingled pheromones the two gave off from their intimate embrace filled the chaste omega's nostrils. He had to leave the room because his body was hard, wet and everything in between.
He now had a pretty good guess as to who the father of Deans baby was.
….
Dean was on his second bowl of chili and third piece of corn bread but curiously turned down his usual dinner beer and chose decaf instant coffee instead. Sam was secretly happy, thinking his brother was toning down his drinking and Bobby thought something weird was going on or someone replaced Dean with an imposter.
Bobby pushed the plate of cornbread over to the stranger who needed some meat on his bones and Alfie took another piece and thanked him.
"So, Dean, what are your plans for your new buddy here?"
"I'm gonna take him to Cal's compound. He's got safe enough places for omegas or even families." Dean was struck with a brilliant idea, "Bobby how about you take him? It would be good for you to get out of here and take your mind off…" Bobby shot a stern look Deans way.
"Take my mind off what?"
"You know."
Sam pipped in, "I think that's a great idea. Meet new people, expand your horizons." "Maybe meet someone…Jamie wouldn't have wanted you to be sad and heartbroken forever…." Sam didn't dare say the last part out loud.
Bobby had enough, he wiped his mouth with his napkin and dropped it on the table, "Well pardon me all to hell, I didn't know there was a time limit on grieving." The elder alpha got up, put his bowl in the sink and headed for his study.
Sam followed his uncle to make sure he was ok while Dean, knowing Bobby was a brick wall when it came to warm and fuzzies, ignored what had just happened.
He gave Alfie a lopsided smile and said, "You can sleep with me, I've got a big bed. Help me clean up the dishes."
After just a brief observation, Alfie knew this family was way more complicated then they appeared.
….
Christmas Day…
This year everything was different for Bobby, Sam and Dean. Jamie was gone along with his good energy, love, and the kitchen full of the baked goods he loved to make. Instead, they had Alfie there but only for a few more days before they brought him to the compound. The world was different as well but they did their best to ignore it at least for today. It had only been a few days since Dean found out he was pregnant and every time he went to tell Sam, he chickened out at the last minute.
They had pancakes ala Bobby with cherry preserves folded into the batter and real butter and maple syrup on top. The preserves were made by Jamie and the syrup tapped by Bobby and bottled by all three of them, this made the meal extra special.
Afterward Sam and Dean made Bobby follow them to one of the sheds where his Christmas gift was hidden. Dean swept his arm dramatically toward the wall, "Merry Christmas, Bobby! Me and Sam worked on this forever, hope you like it."
Bobby went over to the various sizes of steel sheets stacked against the wall, each had screw holes in each corner. They were fashioned from good old Detroit steel, salvaged from the various old trunk lids and hoods. He callused hands touched the old paint and welded edges, he looked over to the boys and gave them a smile, or at least what Bobby equated to a smile and grunted his approval.
"Are these what I think they are?"
Dean, with a proud grin on his face answered, "Yup. Steel window covers for every damn window on that house."
Sam dimpled up, "I took precise measurements. We made them for the inside and the outside."
Bobby wasn't one to get all teary so he scrubbed away the one threatening to fall, "Aw boys, this is the perfect gift, thanks. It's colder than a well diggers ass out here. I think there's a couple gifts under that tree for you two."
Alfie followed the three of them until something huge dropped from the sky and started flopping around in the snow. It was a disgusting thing that reminded him of something from his favorite horror game, Resident Evil. Dark pink flesh stretched over a humanoid frame, barracuda teeth, massive claws and no eyes.
Bobby took out a pistol and shot it through the head. Sam disappeared and came back with a couple pitchforks he and his brother stabbed through its body and dragged it around the back of some cars and tossed on a grotesque mountain of corpses. Bobby tugged the sleeve of the shocked omega, "Come on kid, outside isn't safe."
"W-what was that thing?"
"Don't know, don't care. A lot of things that come through don't make it here. That one would have died from the cold any way. Some of these things are dead before they hit the ground. We got a pile of 'em out back we need to torch."
…..
Dean sat cross legged on the floor by the Christmas tree next to Sam who was wearing flannel PJ bottoms that went half way up his legs. Dean dragged a massive package wrapped in brown paper grocery bags and dropped it on Sam's lap, "Here Sammy."
Sam tore open the package and found a big stack of clothes, "Oh wow, thanks."
Dean stabbed the pile with his finger, "Act more excited, these will actually fit you. No more flood pants! I almost got caught by a nightwatchman at the big and tall store just getting these, THAT is how much I care about my baby bro."
Sam shook his head and smiled, only Dean would brag about stealing for Christmas. "Really, thanks D, I love it." Sam lifted two duct taped grocery bags from behind the tree and set it next to Dean, "Your turn."
Dean rubbed his hands together in anticipation, "Oh boy oh boy!" He ripped open one bag and an avalanche of sweets came pouring out, candy bars of every brand Sam could get his hands on and at the bottom were two boxes of chocolates. "Holy fuck, its all chocolate!" He opened the second bag and this one was full of gummy bears, sour gummy worms, peanut butter kisses, snow caps, Milk Duds and so much more. Candy was the first thing to sellout everywhere and most shelves were completely bare of anything sweet so this gift was very special indeed.
Forgetting all about Bobby and the new guy and acting on those lovey, fuzzy, nesting feelings, Dean wrapped his arms around Sam and kissed his cheek, "Babe, this is the best! I'm craving sugar like crazy."
Sam cast his eyes over to Bobby, worried their uncle would hate this but Bobby chose to ignore it all. On his best day he hated PDAs between anyone and he was still trying to get used to Sam and Dean together. They hadn't talked about it really and the only mention was that day demon-infected blood Sam said something. Sam hugged him back with as much affection. Dean whispered in his ear, "Sam, later I've gotta tell you something."
Bobby cleared his throat loudly, "I see a couple more gifts under there." He handed Sam a two big manilla envelope thick with papers. Sam opened them up and began carefully reading all the official looking papers.
"What is it, Sam?"
Bobby gestured to the papers, "I did this before the world went to hell. Someday things like this will matter again and you two will be set."
"Dean, Bobby put our names along with his own, on the titles and deeds to everything."
"Well, I already had you both in the will but this way when I croak, you two don't have to mess around, its yours already. Someday, if the world gets back to normal, things like this are gonna matter."
Dean got all choked up over this gesture of love and total trust in them, "Bobby, this is…"
"This is what I should have done years ago."
Bobby took the last package from under the tree and handed it to a very surprised and quiet Alfie who was sitting in a wingback chair observing, "This is for you, kid."
The omega with the biggest blue eyes this side of heaven opened them even wider, "For me? Why?"
"Because its Christmas and you need it."
Alfie tore the newspaper open to find a black, plastic box with sturdy hinges, he opened it to find a .38 revolver, "a gun?"
"Yeah, a gun, its easy to use and easy to load and later I'll give you what I'm guessing is your first shooting lesson. Your gonna learn how to load it, clean it and love it. You can't make it in this world with out it. I've got plenty of ammo. We can practice with a pistol too, if that suits you better, I can always switch this out."
It had been so long since he'd celebrated a real Christmas, Alfie was overwhelmed by emotion, a running theme since he got here, "You have all been so wonderful to me and I'm just a stranger. Thank you for the gift and giving me safe harbor, Bobby, thank you for saving me, Dean, thank you for being so patient and explaining things to me, Sam. How can I repay you all?"
Dean lifted his mug of hot coffee, "Just stay alive."
…
That night Dean entered his brother's room and padded quietly to his bed but instead of getting under the covers, he knelt at the side and turned on the bedside lamp. Sam plucked at his robe, "Get under the covers, its freezing in here."
Dean took the tests wrapped in brown paper towel from his robe pocket, "We need to talk."
