I'm sorry this is so behind. I hope you like the story! Also, I plan on writing one long story for the month of Decmeber. I'm not sure what fandom I should write it in, so let me know if you have any thoughts. I have a google form link on my tumblr if you want to respond that way! Otherwise let me know in a review!

Jude watched as Oak showed off his Halloween costume to Cardan, he had been really excited to show Jude the day previously, but Cardan had been busy and as such wasn't able to join her. Oak had just gone with it, not being mad that Cardan wasn't there right away, instead excited that he would get to show off his costume twice.

Vivi had invited Jude and Cardan into the mortal world for Halloween night. She had said the Oak wanted to go trick-or-treating but she needed to stay home to hand out candy. Heather was with her parents and cousins, apparently they had a big family Halloween tradition that she couldn't miss. Therefore, Vivi had the idea to ask Jude and Cardan to take Oak around the neighborhood to get candy.

For Jude, who hadn't had a Halloween in the mortal world since she was six, was quite confused. She didn't remember what their family had done for Halloween, nor did she remember what mortal families did. From what Oak had told her at a blinding speed, the children dressed up and went from house to house getting candy from strangers. In Fairie, that would be a one way ticket to getting poisoned or cursed.

Yesterday Jude had arrived at Vivi's apartment with, as per instruction, her 'fanciest ball gown and crown.' When Jude had asked Vivi about the dress she was told that she needed a costume. The dress she had brought was the one with the fullest skirt she had. It was a pale purple, bordering on silver, with embroidered silver leaves scattered across it.

Cardan had arrived that morning, after dealing with some sort of dispute in Elfhame. He brought with him, for his own costume, a plain set of black pants and shirt, a green mossy cloak, and a mask that would scare any self-respecting child in the mortal world. And maybe even some from Fairie. It had a hooked nose and almost looked like a goblin. There were just slits for eyes and Cardan had glamoured it so that it had an air of darkness seeming to pour from it.

Taryn had also shown up that day, just a few hours after Cardan, also to go trick-or-treating with Oak. Her costume was, as a jab to their adoptive father, a mockery of his style. She nearly fainted, though, when she had seen Cardan in his own costume.

"Jude thought my costume was amazing!" Oak was telling Cardan excitedly. "She said I'm gonna scare so many of the mortal children!"

Jude zeroed in on his outfit. While it was true she had said that he would end up scaring a lot of the mortal children, she hadn't meant that in the good way he had taken it. Oak's costume consisted of stilts so tall Viv had glamoured to help him keep his balance (he wasn't wearing those at the monument, though), a long cloak, and a mask of a snake. What snake in particular? One might ask. Cardan as a snake. Oak was going as the King of Fairie as a snake for Halloween.

Cardan turned to look at her. "I see the cloak and the mask, but I can't put it together. What is he dressed up as?"

Jude opened her mouth to tell Cardan in a more general way, but instead, Oak blurted it out in excitement.

"I'm gonna be you! Vivi helped me get tall enough stilts, and I'm going to be you as that snake!" Then he ran off into his bedroom.

"How did that come to be?" Cardan asked, an odd tone in his voice.

Jude shook her head. "I have no idea. Vivi said he's had his costume picked out for nearly a month already."

They had been out with Oak in the dying light of the evening, going from house to house to get candy. Vivi had shoved the group of four out of the house at six PM on the dot.

As Oak returned to them where they were waiting at the end of a driveway, a little voice came from behind them.

"BOO!"

All three adults turned around to see a small girl under a white bed sheet, pretending to be a ghost. The little girl giggled as she ran off, towards her parents. Both of whom gave Jude, Taryn, and Cardan an apologetic look.

"I scared you! I scared you!"

Jude shook her head. "She'll have to try harder than that to scare me."

Cardan chuckled. "Does anything scare you, my warrior queen?" he asked.

Jude grinned back, letting the low light from around them glint off her teeth. "I certainly seem to be the ruler of all the creatures that would frighten any of the children on this street."

Now Jude seemed to unlock a memory from her time with her real parents. She was four, and it was Halloween. Vivi had been out trick-or-treating with their mother, and Jude and Tayrn were home with their father.

The doorbell had rung, and Justin had nodded for Jude to open the door and hand out the candy. Feeling so proud of herself, Jude had stalked up to the door, opened it, and promptly ran back inside. She cowered in her bed for the next hour.

She had left a shocked boy in the doorway, wearing a cheap mummy costume. Her father had offered candy and apologized to the boy, or also Taryn told her.

When she was little things like spiders, mummies, and even vampires on Halloween scared her. Now she lived in Faerieland, as its queen and walked daily with creatures that would have scared her to death as a child. How far she had come.

Shaking herself from the memory, Jude focused on following her sister, brother, and husband. Every once in a while a girl dressed as a princess would gasp in amazement at her dress and compliment it, braving the terrifying Cardan and, frankly, odd Oak.

"Hey, Taryn?" Jude asked. "Do you remember that time…"
