Episode 7
(In a chamber, deep within the Dalek city on Skaro, an overhead screen shows a different Princess. One from long ago, who is being held prisoner, with her wrists and ankles stuck to the wall by metal clamps. She is older than this Princess, with a wrinkled face and red hair, and dressed in a red and black dress.)
PRINCESS: (Recording) Then…Then I'll share with you my knowledge. Knowledge of our species, our home planet. My heritage and the power that has been bestowed upon me. I can give you my power–
EMPEROR: We will finally collect what you have promised to us.
PRINCESS: No! I never made any such promise! I won't give you anything!
EMPEROR: You will give us all your secrets, and we shall take whatever powers you have.
(Suddenly, an alcove in the chamber lights up, revealing something familiar inside…)
JAMIE: The Tardis!
EMPEROR: And then, you will take the Dalek factor. You will spread it throughout all of time and space!
(The Princess and Doctor are horrified by the idea. But there is no escape. They're surrounded by Daleks on all sides, who have played them for fools. Before them is the Dalek Emperor, with a line of Black Daleks in front of him, who have plans from them. Plans, which the Doctor and Princess fear might come to fruition.)
DOCTOR: We…We won't do it. You can't make us.
EMPEROR: You will soon obey. Remove them from this chamber.
BLACK DALEK: Follow.
(The Black Dalek behind them turns, heading back out the way they came in. With no choice, the Doctor, Princess, Jamie and Waterfield, fall in line, as they are escorted out by two other Daleks.)
(A short while later, the Doctor, Princess, Jamie and Waterfield, enter a cell, to find Victoria, Kemel and Maxtible inside. Once inside, the door seals shut behind them.)
JAMIE: It's Victoria!
VICTORIA: Father!
(Victoria stands and rushes over to Waterfield, embracing him.)
WATERFIELD: My dear, Victoria. I'm so sorry for all that has befallen you.
VICTORIA: It's not your fault, Papa.
PRINCESS: She's right, it's not, Edward.
(Victoria and Waterfield part.)
VICTORIA: I'm sorry, who are you?
JAMIE: Victoria, this is one of my friends I was telling you about. The Princess.
VICTORIA: Oh, I'm sorry. I–I didn't' realise.
(Victoria bows.)
PRINCESS: Oh, no, no, no, please, none of that. I don't like being made a fuss over.
VICTORIA: Oh. My apologise.
PRINCESS: It's fine. And it's lovely to meet you at last, Victoria. Oh, and this is my good friend, the Doctor.
DOCTOR: Delighted, Victoria.
VICTORIA: As am I, sir.
DOCTOR: (Chuckling) 'Sir,' you're making me feel old.
JAMIE: Doctor, Princess. This is Kemel.
(Kemel waves in greeting. The Princess goes over and hugs Kemel tightly, before kissing him on the check and making him blush.)
PRINCESS: That's for looking after Jamie.
JAMIE: Looking after me? I saved his life, I'll have you know.
DOCTOR: Yes, but we know he saved yours as well.
JAMIE: Aye, well…
VICTORIA: Well, they both saved me, so I'm very grateful.
JAMIE: Aye, I only wish we'd done a better job of it. I'm sorry you're now stuck in this place.
VICTORIA: Don't be, it's not your fault.
WATERFIELD: (Spiteful) No. It's his.
(Waterfield points to Maxtible, who is keeping his distance.)
DOCTOR: Maxtible?
WATERFIELD: He's been conspiring with the Daleks all along.
JAMIE: He's what?!
VICTOIRA: It's true. Before he helped them to make me scream, so as to draw you in.
(Kemel nods, with a glare at Maxtible.)
JAMIE: Oh, did he? Well, let's see how he likes it when I make him–
(The Doctor prevents Jamie from crossing the room.)
DOCTOR: Jamie, that's enough.
JAMIE: Don't try and stop me, Doctor.
DOCTOR: Fighting won't solve anything.
JAMIE: Aye, well, maybe it'll knock some sense into him.
MAXTIBLE: You stupid boy, how could you possibly understand.
PRINCESS: Why did you do it, Maxtible? What did the Daleks promise you?
MAXTIBLE: The secret of transmutation. The power to turn metal into gold.
(The Princess stares at him.)
PRINCESS: Oh, I'm sorry, is that? I was waiting for something more.
MAXTIBLE: You simple woman.
PRINCESS: You are aware they blew up your house, right?
MAXTIBLE (Angrily) Yes. But I can build another lab. And once I have the secret, I'll have unlimited power.
PRINCESS: You can't possible–
DOCTOR: I wouldn't bother, Princess. He's clearly not willing to listen.
JAMIE: Look, it's daft though. Metal into gold's an old wives' tale.
DOCTOR: Not necessarily. The alchemists of the Middle Ages made transmutation their main aim in life.
JAMIE: Aye, they didn't succeed though.
DOCTOR: Even in the twentieth century, it's still considered scientifically possible.
MAXTIBLE: Of course it's possible!
PRINCESS: You don't need to shout.
JAMIE: Well, I don't care whether it's possible or not.
DOCTOR: Whether it is or whether it isn't, is beside the point.
JAMIE: Oh, and what is the point then?
DOCTOR: Why are the Daleks doing this?
MAXTIBLE: They promised me!
DOCTOR: Daleks don't keep their promises.
MAXTIBLE: I see what you're trying to do, Doctor. You're trying to shake my faith. But I will be given the secret!
JAMIE: Ah, well it won't do you any good because you won't be able to use your secret. I'll see to that!
(Jamie lungs past the Doctor and grabs Maxtible.)
MAXTIBLE: Get your hands off me!
DOCTOR: Jamie!
PRINCESS: He's not worth it!
(The door to the cell opens, and a Dalek enters.)
DALEK: Move away! Move!
(Jamie and Maxtible stop fighting, but Jamie continues to hold onto Maxtible.)
VICTORIA: Please, Jamie, do as it says.
DALEK: You will not harm this human being, or you will be exterminated.
DOCTOR: Yes, yes. We quite understand.
PRINCESS: Jamie, he's not worth dying over. Just let him go, please.
(Jamie pushes himself away from Maxtible, releasing him. Satisfied, the Dalek leaves, the door closing behind it.)
MAXTIBLE: You will be advised to do as they say.
JAMIE: Oh, don't worry. The very thought of going near you revolts me.
DOCTOR: Jamie, leave him.
(Jamie storms back over to the group, leaving Maxtible alone. As Jamie huffs and puffs, the Doctor sits down on the floor against the wall, pulling out his recorder. He then begins to play a calming tune. As he does, the Princess sits down on the floor next to him, enjoying the relaxing music. Meanwhile, Waterfield approaches Maxtible.)
WATERFIELD: They seem to be prepared to protect you.
MAXTIBLE: Be warned.
WATERFIELD: I appeal to you, Maxtible. It may still not be too late. If they're your friends, help us. If you did, we could plan something. Try to escape–
MAXTIBLE: No!
WATERFIELD: Well at least for Victoria's sake, after what you did to her.
MAXTIBLE: No, I tell you! No!
VICTORIA: It's no good, Papa. He doesn't listen anymore.
(Shaking his head, Waterfield leaves Maxtible too. After a moment, with only the Doctor's recorder playing to fill the silence, Victoria kneels down before the two time travellers.)
VICTORIA: How are you both doing?
PRINCESS: What a considerate thing to ask. What brought it about?
VICTORIA: You seem troubled.
PRINCESS: We are. We're all in serious trouble.
VICTORIA: Because of the Daleks?
PRINCESS: Yes, and no. I made a mistake a long time ago. I said something that I shouldn't. Now the Daleks want to use that against not only us, but all of creation.
VICTORIA: I see. Can't you stop them?
PRINCESS: I want to. But the Emperor seemed convinced that we would help them.
(Victoria looks over to Maxtible, who's sulking in the corner.)
VICTORIA: Perhaps they think you're like him.
PRINCESS: I should hope not.
(Victoria smiles a little, prompting the Princess to smile too.)
PRINCESS: Besides, we've met several times now. Both as we are now, and as we were when I made the mistake. The Daleks know where the Doctor and I stand.
VICTORIA: Well, how did they get you to say what you said last time? When you said what you shouldn't?
PRINCESS: They threatened my friends.
VICTORIA: Will they do that again?
PRINCESS: Perhaps.
VICTORIA: Will you tell them then?
PRINCESS: I can't, Victoria. Believe me, I don't want any harm to fall any of you, even Maxtible. But I can't tell them what I know. I was desperate and foolish when I first thought of it. Now, I know how dangerous that knowledge is. If I'd been a little more careful, perhaps we could have avoided all this. Then again, maybe not. And perhaps there's even worse to come because of it.
VICTORIA: I don't understand.
PRINCESS: Oh, I hardly understand myself half the time, either. I wouldn't worry about it.
VICTORIA: It feels like I've been trying not to worry for the longest time.
PRINCESS: I'm sorry. This hasn't been easy for you, has it?
VICTORIA: It's easier now that I'm united with Papa.
PRINCESS: I'm glad. He's been worried about you.
VICTORIA: I sometimes fear he worries about me too much.
PRINCESS: I know the feeling.
VICTORIA: Is your father the same?
PRINCESS: No, but my mother is. I haven't seen my father in a long time, not since I was very young. He died.
VICTORIA: I'm sorry. Might your mother come for you then?
PRINCESS: Perhaps. Or perhaps I'll finally call for help. It would be the mature thing to do.
VICTORIA: What do you mean, 'Call?'
PRINCESS: I'd send a telepathic…. Wait.
(The Doctor stops playing his recorder.)
DOCTOR: What is it, Princess?
PRINCESS: Just a thought.
(The Princess gets up and approaches Maxtible.)
PRINCESS: Maxtible? Maxtible.
MAXTIBLE: The Daleks warned you to leave me alone.
PRINCESS: I'm only wanting to ask you a question.
MAXTIBLE: What is it?
PRINCESS: What do you know about the device the Daleks used on Arthur Terrall?
MAXTIBLE: I knew enough to warn them about it. It was erratic, unruly. He kept breaking free for brief moments.
PRINCESS: I wonder what your daughter would think about you controlling her future husband's mind?
MAXTIBLE: I've answered you questions now leave me alone!
(The Princess scurries back over to the Doctor and Victoria.)
DOCTOR: Well?
PRINCESS: Whatever they used on Arthur Terrall, they won't use on us. Maxtible said it was unreliable, and that's just for humans.
DOCTOR: Hmm.
VICTORIA: Something the matter, Doctor?
DOCTOR: On the contrary. A thought has just occurred to me.
(The Doctor takes out the control device that he took form Arthur Terrall. Also bringing out a screwdriver, he opens up the device and begins to examine it.)
DOCTOR: As I thought. This is designed specifically for humans.
PRINCESS: Well, how does that help us?
DOCTOR: It doesn't, I'm afraid. It just means as long as they don't know what we are, they can't use the same trick on us.
(The door the cell opens up again, as a Black Dalek enters the room and approaches Maxtible.)
BLACK DALEK: We are ready to provide you with the secret of transmutated metal.
MAXTIBLE: Yes. Yes, yes, the secret you promised me!
BLACK DALEK: Turn and look.
(Another door opens up, revealing beyond it a machine. It is a large machine, with a glass container on the top, holding a grey silvery goop like substance, with two screens on either side showing a series of numbers.)
BLACK DALEK: Above, liquid metal. Read.
MAXTIBLE: Wait.
(Adjusting his glasses, Maxtible takes a step closer–)
BLACK DALEK: Do not move!
MAXTIBLE: It is hard to see. (Reading) Fifty-five point eight four.
BLACK DALEK: Atomic weight. Read again.
MAXTIBLE: Seven point eight four.
BLACK DALEK: Specific gravity.
DOCTOR: Atomic weight and gravity of iron.
BLACK DALEK: Watch. Read atomic weight.
(The liquid inside the container seems to boil, changing from the grey silvery goop into something like smooth melted honey. The numbers on the screens also begin to change.)
MAXTIBLE: Nineteen point two.
BLACK DALEK: Read specific gravity.
MAXTIBLE: Sixty-nine point five– Gold! Iron into gold! I told you it was possible! They've kept their promise. It's true, it's true! They have!
BLACK DALEK: The machine is yours.
(The Black Dalek leaves through the door it entered from, leaving the door to the machine open.)
MAXTIBLE: Yes. (Laughing) Yes, yes!
PRINCESS: You can't seriously believe them! All they did was show you some numbers, that doesn't prove anything!
DOCTOR: Maxtible, if you value your life, don't go near that machine!
(But Maxtible doesn't listen. He goes straight towards the machine, passing through the doorway. And as he does, he's hit by a wave of energy from all around.)
JAMIE: Maxtible!
(Maxtible stands in the doorway, the air around him shimmering as his body twitches. Then whatever is happening stops, and Maxtible's head drops, shoulders going limp as he stands motionless.)
VICTORIA: What have they done to him?
(The Black Dalek then returns, entering through the original door.)
BLACK DALEK: (To Maxtible) Turn.
(Maxitble lifts his head, then does as ordered. Everyone gasps, seeing a blank wide-eyed look on Maxtible's face.)
BLACK DALEK: Move to control.
MAXTIBLE: (Monotone) I obey.
(Maxtible exits out through the other door, heading out of sight.)
JAMIE: They've turned him into a Dalek.
BLACK DALEK: Yes. The Dalek factor.
DOCTOR: And you want us to spread it throughout time and space. Never!
BLACK DALEK: We know you will obey.
PRINCESS: We'll never obey you!
BLACK DALEK: You will, once we use the Dalek factor on you.
DOCTOR: What...?
BLACK DALEK: You will become like us, and then you will obey. You will serve the Daleks for all of time.
PRINCESS: No…
BLACK DALEK: Yes.
(The Black Dalek then leaves, as both doors close, trapping the time travellers inside.)
PRINCESS: Doctor…
(The Princess is scared, while the Doctor looks defeated.)
JAMIE: Ah, dinnae you worry, Princess. I'll no let them do anything to you.
(Kemel then points to himself with a stern look.)
JAMIE: Aye, and Kemel's the same. We'll protect you all.
DOCTOR: I don't know if you'll be able to against something like this, Jamie.
VICTORIA: Don't give up, Doctor.
WATERFIELD: We must think of something.
DOCTOR: No. There's no way out. Not without being infected with the Dalek factor. It's over. We've gambled all and lost.
(Everyone looks between each other in defeat.)
(Later on, everyone is getting some sleep. Waterfield is asleep in a chair, with Victoria knelt beside him, her head resting on his lap. Jamie and Kemel are curled up on the floor, and the Doctor and Princess are sat against the wall, both still awake. The Princess has taken out her playing cards and has laid six of them face down on the floor. She is staring at them in thought.)
DOCTOR: Are you sure you want to do that?
PRINCESS: I don't see that we have any choice. You said it yourself, there's no way out. And if we do nothing, the Daleks get both of us.
DOCTOR: And by extension all of time and space.
PRINCESS: Are you absolutely sure there's nothing you can think of?
DOCTOR: Well…there is one thing I've been pondering.
PRINCESS: Yes?
DOCTOR: But it's only an outside chance. And there's only one way to test it.
PRINCESS: What is it?
DOCTOR: But they might get both of us at once. And if I'm wrong, there will be no one left to contact them.
PRINCESS: So it might be now or never?
DOCTOR: Exactly. Do we continue to risk everything, with the stakes even higher than we thought? Or do we admit we're in over our heads, and call them in?
PRINCESS: Well, what's your theory?
DOCTOR: The Dalek factor.
PRINCESS: What about it?
DOCTOR: It's reverse engineered. They only worked out the Dalek factor, after we gave them the human factor. We didn't create the Dalek factor on its own.
PRINCESS: I don't understand.
DOCTOR: Well, if it's been reverse engineered, this particular Dalek Factor, might only work on humans. We might be unaffected.
PRINCESS: That's a pretty big, 'Might.'
DOCTOR: I know. And if I'm wrong…
(The two go back to looking at the six playing cards laid out on the ground.)
DOCTOR: Any chance of a premonition?
PRINCESS: I don't know if I trust them anymore, not after how colossally I messed up.
DOCTOR: You didn't mess up.
PRINCESS: You only helped the Daleks because I talked you into it, because I thought we could beat them at their own game. All because I thought I saw something.
DOCTOR: You did see something, Princess. But it could have been an alternative timeline, a possibility, there's just no way to be certain. These premonitions of yours, they're unusual, you can't be expected to know for certain what they mean.
PRINCESS: But you trusted me, and I let you down.
DOCTOR: You did not let me down. I believed in you, not your premonitions. It was your optimism, your belief in the impossible, that inspired me.
PRINCESS: And I believe in you, Doctor.
DOCTOR: Enough to risk everything though?
PRINCESS: Yes. I took a gamble leaving home with you, and that was the best decision of my life. I have no doubt you're right about this Dalek Factor.
DOCTOR: I wish I could be as sure.
PRINCESS: Then I'll be doubly sure for you.
(The Princess picks up the cards from the floor, putting them back into the deck, which she then puts inside her jacket.)
DOCTOR: Well, all we can do now is wait for the Daleks to make their move.
PRINCESS: In that case, I'm going to get some sleep.
(The Princess closes her eyes, leaning back against the wall.)
DOCTOR: (Chuckling) Good idea.
(But the Princess is already asleep.)
DOCTOR: Night, night, Princess.
(The Doctor rests his head on the Princess' shoulder, before closing his own eyes and drifting off to sleep.)
(Later, the Doctor and Princess begin to stir, as someone enters the cell. Everyone else is where they were, as the new arrival stands before the two time travellers.)
MAXTIBLE: Doctor, Princess, open your eyes.
(The Doctor and Princess open their sleepy eyes, finding Maxtible stood before them. He is also swinging a jewel from a chain in front of them. It immediately catches the eyes of both the Doctor and Princess, as they watch the jewel swing back and forth rhythmically.)
MAXTIBLE: You are asleep, but you can still hear my voice. You watch the jewel, swing back and forth. Watching as the light catches it, forever changing as it sparkles. Watch the jewel, and listen. I have come to help you. Look at the box.
(The Doctor and Princess' eyes move over to the doorway behind Maxtible, where a device with a viewing screen has been set up. On the screen, is the Tardis, having been moved out of the chamber and now residing outside the Dalek city.)
MAXTIBLE: I have had your Tardis placed outside the city. Now, watch the jewel once more. Do as I say, and I will take you both to your Tardis. Rise.
(The Doctor and Princess stand up, their eyes still half shut and dazed.)
MAXTIBLE: Follow me.
(Maxtible steps backwards through the doorway, continuing to swing the jewel. The Doctor and Princess step forward, compelled to do so. They are still staring at the jewel, as they make their way towards the doorway. As they do however, Jamie stirs.)
JAMIE: (Waking) Hey…Hey, Doctor, Princess. What's…
(Jamie sees the Doctor and Princess walking towards the doorway Maxtible went through.)
JAMIE: Don't go near the door!
(But the Doctor and Princess step through, and as they do, they are hit with the same energy wave as Maxtible. The air around them shimmers, as their bodies twitch, snapping them out of the hypnotic trance they were in moments ago. It takes a moment, then the Doctor and Princess drop their heads, shoulders slouching. But then, they rise back up, ridged as they continue through the doorway to join Maxtible.)
JAMIE: Doctor? Princess?
(The Doctor and Princess turn back around in sync, with matching blank stares and wide eyes.)
DOCTOR: (Monotone) Stay where you are.
PRINCESS: (Monotone) That is an order.
JAMIE: No…
(The Doctor and Princess turn back around as one to face Maxtible.)
MAXTIBLE: We will work together on the Dalek factor. Follow me.
DOCTOR & PRINCESS: We obey.
(As Maxtible leads the Doctor and Princess away, the door seals shut behind them, trapping Jamie and the others in the cell once again. Maxtible leads the Doctor and Princess into an adjoining room, containing within it a large machine. As Maxtible comes alongside the machine–)
MAXTIBLE: Stop.
(The Doctor and Princess stop on command. Maxtible then turns around to face them both.)
MAXTIBLE: This machine is for the mass production of the Dalek factor. Follow me.
(They continue on to the next smaller machine.)
MAXTIBLE: Stop.
(Maxtible then pulls out a positronic brain capsule.)
MAXTIBLE: This machine will transform the thought patterns in this capsule into a steam. The steam will be sprayed into the atmosphere of every planet through time and space.
DOCTOR: I must examine the machine.
MAXTIBLE: Do so. (To Princess) You will follow me.
PRINCESS: I obey.
DOCTOR: Wait. I need her to assist with my work.
(Maxtible pauses for a moment.)
MAXTIBLE: Very well.
(Maxtible leaves the room. A few seconds after he leaves, the Doctor and Princess drop the stiff act and sigh in relief.)
DOCTOR: Well, I think he bought it.
PRINCESS: You were right, it did nothing to us. And thank goodness he believed you needed me. I don't want to imagine where he was going to take me.
DOCTOR: As if I'd let you go off with another man.
(The Princess giggles, before being shushed by the Doctor. The Doctor then points back to the room they came from, and the Princess nods. The two then proceed back through to the other room and over to the door they came through – the one that gave them the Dalek factor. Once there, the Doctor opens a panel in the wall, revealing a mechanism involving a positronic brain capsule.)
PRINCESS: (Quietly) So, that's the Dalek factor.
DOCTOR: (Quietly) Yes. Remove that and the machine stops working.
PRINCESS: But they can just as easily replace it, can't they?
DOCTOR: True. But then I've had a thought about that.
(The Doctor takes out the positronic brain capsule, and turns it upside down, before slotting it back into the mechanism.)
PRINCESS: You've reversed it?
DOCTOR: Yes. Now instead of turning humans into Daleks, it'll turn Daleks into humans.
PRINCESS: The human factor.
DOCTOR: So there might be a chance for your premonition after all. (Hissing, into cell) Jamie. Jamie. Jamie!
(Hearing the Doctor, Jamie approaches the cell door.)
JAMIE: (Quietly) Yes?
DOCTOR: Jamie, when I give you the word, bring everyone through this archway. Through the door.
JAMIE: What?
DOCTOR: Trust me.
(A Black Dalek glides into the room. Seeing it, before it sees them, the Princess taps the Doctor's shoulder. Both then go back to standing up straight with their blank wide-eyed looks.)
BLACK DALEK: What are you doing?
PRINCESS: (Monotone) I need to see the Emperor. I have information for him.
BLACK DALEK: Move aside.
(The Doctor and Princess part, allowing the Black Dalek to approach the cell door. The door opens, and the Black Dalek looks inside, making sure everyone is still there. While it does so, the Doctor and Princess look back in, and wink and wave at Jamie – who stares back in bewilderment. The second the Black Dalek starts to turn around, the Doctor and Princess go back to pretending, as the cell door closes.)
BLACK DALEK: I will take you to the Emperor. Follow me.
DOCTOR & PRINCESS: (Monotone) We obey.
(The Doctor and Princess walk side by side, as they follow the Black Dalek out.)
(A short while later, the Black Dalek leads the Doctor and Princess into the chamber where the Emperor resides. The Doctor and Princess line up before the Dalek Emperor, standing perfectly still and looking up at it with wide unblinking eyes.)
EMPEROR: What do you want?
PRINCESS: A Dalek questioned an order.
EMPEROR: Again?!
DOCTOR: We have searched without success. Therefore, all Daleks must pass through the archway door. The Dalek with the human factor will then become a Dalek again.
PRINCESS: Once all obey, then we can spread the Dalek factor throughout time and space. I can foresee it, all of time and space, under Dalek command. All will obey.
EMPEROR: Let it be done!
DOCTOR & PRINCESS: We obey.
(The Doctor and Princess turn in sync, before walking out the chamber.)
(A short while later, back at the cell, the Doctor and Princess stand on either side of the door, rigid and unblinking, with a large group of Daleks before them.)
DOCTOR: Once this door is open, you will proceed through and out through the other door.
PRINCESS: After you will return to your duties.
DOCTOR: Proceed one at a time.
(The cell door opens, and the Daleks begin going through one at a time. Each passes through the cell, while Jamie, Victoria, Kemel and Waterfield watch, before then passing out the other side. And as they pass through the other doorway, they are each hit with the same wave of energy as all the others who have passed through. But the Daleks continue on, one after the other. Hundreds going through for several minutes, like a factory floor, until finally, all have passed through.)
PRINCESS: Is that all of them?
DOCTOR: It'll do for now.
(The Doctor and Princess relax, dropping the act. They then enter the cell, to an amazed Jamie, Victoria, Kemel and Waterfield.)
DOCTOR: Well, what are you just standing there for? Go on, quickly, through the door, follow them through the door.
(The four in the cell stare suspiciously at the Doctor and Princess.)
PRINCESS: I think we might have done too good a job.
DOCTOR: Oh, don't worry, I've changed over the factors. I reversed the circuit so now it produces the human factor.
PRINCESS: Don't you understand? All those Daleks have just been given the human factor!
DOCTOR: Go on, hurry!
JAMIE: Well, aren't you two coming?
DOCTOR: Well, we've got things to do.
JAMIE: Ah, well, why didn't it affect either of you before then?
PRINCESS: You should know the answer to that, Jamie. We're not human, remember.
DOCTOR: The Dalek factor only affected humans because it was the reverse of the human factor.
PRINCESS: Now, you're going to want to follow the corridor out there, then turn left, twice. Follow that corridor, and you'll reach where we came in. Climb out, then head back to where we first arrived, Jamie, you'll find the Tardis there.
DOCTOR: We'll join you once we're finished here. Come on, Princess.
(The Doctor hurries out the cell with the Princess behind him, before the door closes. They head down the corridor, entering a room where several Daleks are spinning on the spot and singing.)
DALEKS: Dizzy, dizzy. Dizzy Daleks. Dizzy, dizzy. Dizzy Daleks.
PRINCESS: (Quietly) You know, it's actually quite catchy.
DOCTOR: (Quietly) Look out.
(The Doctor pulls the Princess aside against the wall. The two press themselves up against the wall, as a Black Dalek enters the room.)
BLACK DALEK: Continue your work.
DALEK 1: Why?
DALEK 2: Yes, why?
BLACK DALEK: Do not question.
DALEKS: Why? Why? Why?
BLACK DALEK: Silence! You will obey!
DALEK 1: I will not obey.
(The Black Dalek fires at the new Dalek. It screams before rolling back and dying, its lights turning off. One of the other new Daleks attempts to wake it by poking it with its sucker. The Princess has tried to run out, but the Doctor holds her back, both saddened by what has happened.)
BLACK DALEK: You will obey without question!
(But instead the new Daleks return fire. The Black Dalek screams, as it too dies. With the Black Dalek dead, the Doctor steps out of hiding.)
DOCTOR: Quickly, this way. Follow me, Daleks! This way! Come on!
DALEKS: Why?
PRINCESS: Because we're your friends and we want to help you. Trust us.
DOCTOR: Yes. The Doctor and Princess. Friends.
DALEKS: Doctor. Princess. Friends. Trust Doctor Princess. Trust Doctor Princess.
(The Doctor and Princess lead the new Daleks down the corridor, heading towards the chamber, when they encounter another Black Dalek. Quickly, the Doctor and Princess step aside, once again hiding against the wall, as the Black Dalek faces off against the new Daleks.)
BLACK DALEK: Return to your work.
DALEK 2: Why?
BLACK DALEK: Do not question.
DOCTOR: Why not question? What work? Tell them!
BLACK DALEK: Silence!
DALEK 2: Explain.
DALEK 3: What work?
DALEK 2: Why obey without question?
PRINCESS: Ask the Emperor!
DALEK 3: The Emperor.
DALEK 2: Yes, ask the Emperor.
BLACK DALEK: Keep back, you cannot enter!
DOCTOR & PRINCESS: Why?!
DALEK 2: Why?
DALEK 3: Why?
DALEK 2: The Emperor must explain.
(The Black Dalek fires upon the new Daleks, killing one of them.)
PRINCESS: No!
(The Doctor holds the Princess back.)
DOCTOR: Defend yourselves, Daleks! The Black Daleks are attacking you!
EMPEROR: (From speaker) All Black Dalek leaders to Control. Exterminate all opposition! Destroy the rebels!
(The Black Dalek retreats down the corridor towards the chamber.)
DOCTOR: Come on! This way! Come on!
DALEK 3: Why?
DALEK 4: Yes, why?
DALEK 3: You said we should question.
DOCTOR: That's right. Always question until you're given a satisfying answer.
DALEK 3: Why should we trust you?
DALEK 4: Yes, why?
(At that moment Waterfield comes running up the corridor, past the new Daleks to join the Doctor and Princess.)
WATERFIELD: Doctor! Princess!
PRINCESS: Edward, what are you doing here?
DALEK 3: Yes, what are you doing here?
DOCTOR: Daleks listen to me, your lives are in danger. The Black Daleks are attacking you. The Emperor has commanded it.
PRINCESS: Edward, you have to go. Your daughter needs–
WATERFIELD: No. I got you both into this, it's my duty to get you both out of here, alive.
PRINCESS: Edward, please–
DALEK 3: (To Doctor) Why has the Emperor commanded it?
DOCTOR: Because you question. Defend yourselves. Destroy the Emperor or be destroyed yourselves!
PRINCESS: Doctor, we have to get out of here.
DOCTOR: Destroy the Emperor!
PRINCESS: Doctor, come on, before–
(The Black Dalek from before reappears, taking aim at the Doctor and Princess. They both see it, staring at its weapon. But before it fires, Waterfield shoves the two time travellers aside. The Dalek fires. The air around Waterfield inverts, before the man drops to the ground.)
PRINCESS: No!
(The new Daleks return fire, destroying the Black Dalek. The Princess rushes to Waterfield's side with the Doctor right behind her.)
PRINCESS: Edward. Doctor–Doctor, do something.
(The Doctor looks over Waterfield, but is grim.)
WATERFIELD: It's…It's all right.
PRINCESS: No. No, it's not. You're daughter, Victoria–
WATERFIELD: Is safe… And finally free from those…
(Waterfield groans in pain.)
DOCTOR: You saved our lives.
WATERFIELD: Yes. One life…for two. Two good lives… Two kind lives…
PRINCESS: That doesn't make it okay. I've–I've got to try, maybe I can–
(Waterfield takes the Princess' glowing hand, which ceases to glow on contact.)
WATERFIELD: No. No time…for me. Victoria. Please, you must…
DOCTOR: Don't worry about Victoria. We'll look after her.
WATERFIELD: P-P-Promise?
PRINCESS: Of course. Edward, I give you our word, we'll protect her with our lives.
(Watefield manages a grateful smile, then his head falls back. The Princess whimpers, fighting back the tears, as the Doctor closes Waterfield's eyes. The new Daleks gather around.)
DALEK 3: (To Princess) What are you doing?
DOCTOR: She's crying.
DALEK 3: Why?
DOCTOR: Because someone has died, a friend of ours.
DALEKS: Friend.
DOCTOR: We never want our friends to die, we want to protect them.
DALEKS: Protect friends, protect friends.
DOCTOR: And you are all friends, so you must protect each other! And the one wishing you harm is the Emperor! You must stop him!
DALEKS: Stop the Emperor. Stop the Emperor. Stop the Emperor.
DOCTOR: That way! You'll find him in that chamber.
(The new Daleks begin moving down the corridor and into the chamber, until it's just the Doctor, Princess and the deceased Waterfield left.)
PRINCESS: I'm sorry, Edward. You didn't deserve this.
DOCTOR: There's nothing we can do for him now, Princess. Only keep our promise to him.
(The Doctor helps the Princess to her feet.)
DOCTOR: Come on, I want to see–
PRINCESS: No.
DOCTOR: Princess?
PRINCESS: He won't escape, the Emperor. But we need to leave now. They're…They're going to destroy each other.
DOCTOR: I see. Are you sure?
PRINCESS: Certain this time.
DOCTOR: Then let's get out of here.
(The Doctor and Princess proceed away from the chamber, back down the corridor.)
(The Doctor and Princess are running through a rumbling city. The fighting from the two Dalek factions can be heard throughout, as part of the corridor around them continue to collapse and break apart.)
DOCTOR: We're almost there!
(But then, the Doctor and Princess come to a stop, as they find Maxtible blocking their escape.)
MAXTIBLE: You will not defeat the Daleks. The Daleks will succeed. You must be exterminated. Exterminate. Exterminate. Exterminate.
PRINCESS: Take a step to the left.
(The Princess and Doctor take a step to the left. Maxtible, advancing towards them, hands outstretched, steps to the right, cutting them off. Only for a piece of rubble to fall from the ceiling and hit him on the head, knocking him out.)
PRINCESS: That was for Edward Waterfield.
(Taking the Princess' hand, the Doctor leads her around Maxtible and the rubble, as they continue on down the corridor and out the crumbling Dalek city.)
(Later, the Doctor and Princess, are watching from that familiar cliffside, as the Dalek city collapses in on itself, fires a blaze throughout the city.)
JAMIE: Doctor. Princess.
(The Doctor and Princess look back, seeing Jamie and Victoria coming towards them from within petrified forest.)
DOCTOR: Jamie.
(The Doctor and Princess both give Jamie a big hug.)
PRINCESS: Thank goodness you're all right.
(They part.)
JAMIE: A Dalek nearly caught us, but Kemel he…
DOCTOR: What about Kemel?
JAMIE: He knocked it over the side…and went with it.
PRINCESS: Oh, Kemel…
(Victoria is looking around.)
VICTORIA: Where is my father?
(The Doctor and Princess look to Victoria, heartbroken.)
VICTORIA: Is he dead?
DOCTOR: Yes. Yes, I'm afraid he is.
(Victoria begins to cry.)
PRINCESS: I'm so sorry, Victoria.
(The Princess goes to Victoria, comforting her with a hug, as the young girl buries her face in the Princess' chest.)
DOCTOR: But he didn't die in vain. I think we've seen the end of the Daleks, forever.
(It does little to cheer up Victoria, as she keeps crying into the Princess. The Doctor steps closer to Jamie.)
DOCTOR: Jamie, we must get along to the Tardis. It should be just next to where we first arrived. Through there, do you see it?
JAMIE: Aye, but…we cannae leave her alone, Doctor.
DOCTOR: We're not going to leave her. She's coming with us. Would you mind taking her along. The Princess and I will join you shortly. That is…if you're staying with us.
JAMIE: Aye, of course.
DOCTOR: Thank you. And I'm sorry, Jamie.
JAMIE: Thanks Doctor.
(Jamie goes to Victoria and the Princess. Victoria pulls away from the Princess, accepting Jamie's comforting arms, as he takes her and leads her towards the Tardis. The Princess watches them walk off, before the Doctor joins her.)
DOCTOR: The end.
(The Doctor and Princess look back at the Dalek city, which they first viewed so long ago, and with different eyes. Only now it's been reduced to ashes, with only a burning fire to remember it. One that will soon burn itself out, leaving nothing behind.)
DOCTOR: The final end. Don't you think?
PRINCESS: I can't see anything. Maybe this is the end. Perhaps, we'll never see them again.
DOCTOR: If we're lucky.
(And with that, the Doctor and Princess turn their backs on the once grand Dalek city. They make their way through the petrified forest, back to that spot where they landed so long ago. Where Jamie and Victoria are waiting for them. The Doctor dries Victoria's tears, and she manages a grateful smile, before he unlocks the door to the Tardis. The Princess then leads Victoria inside, with the Doctor and Jamie following. As they all head towards, their next adventure…)
