Today marked the start of the six activities Bella and I chose to try and learn more about ourselves for our biography project. Instead of our usual Monday trip to the library we met with Esme and the three of us spent some time in my garden. Esme recommended that we plant a few different varieties of flowers. We settled upon a few varieties from the stock of seeds and bulbs Esme had to hand, Bella planted peonies, irises, and tulips, I opted for crocuses, snowdrops and grape hyacinths.

When hunting I take care to never spill a drop and so the entire process is quite neat, all things considered. Of course, we have to bury the bodies, but as I am in the lingering throes of bloodlust, my more carnal inclinations come to the fore.

Not being used to getting my hands dirty at any other time, I was a little hesitant to get started, and concerned about getting dirt trapped beneath my fingernails. Thankfully Esme lent me her pink gardening gloves to protect my hands. In contrast, Bella seemed to be in her element, chatting away with Esme as mud flew hither and thither. I had thought myself to be more animalistic and thus connected to the natural environment, but so long at war with that side of myself has left me ill at ease with embracing the messier aspects of outdoor activities.

I was very glad to see Bella felt relaxed around Esme, despite being at our home and on enemy territory as it were. Esme has a real gift for putting people at ease and managed to keep Bella engaged in conversation throughout our time in the garden.

Once we finished up, Esme went over basic care instructions and we labelled each of our three pots, mine shall stay here and Bella took hers home to care for in her own garden. We washed up and Esme offered Bella a drink and a snack. Sadly she could not stay long, as she had to go home to cook dinner for her father and do some homework.

After she left Esme sat with me in my room and silently told me how well she thought I was doing and how proud of me she is. It really is thanks to her that I have been able to survive thus far and have made any small progress whatsoever. She really is a wonderful mother.
