The library will reopen on December 17th, a little over a month from today. Esme and I made a surreptitious visit tonight to see how everything is moving along. The new roof is finished and the guttering being put into place. Inside plumbing and wiring work is underway.

There are solar panels on almost the entire roof, and skylights in the other spots to let in as much daylight as possible. The high end windows and insulation should mean energy efficiency is good, running costs are lower and there is more money for new books and library events as a result. We opted for underfloor heating, to create a cosy atmosphere and built an anteroom for people to dry off out of the rain before entering the library

Esme and I have settled on a colour scheme we think will be relaxing and hope should not date too poorly.

For the children's section we are making a kind of tree that has a treehouse for reading. The children can also climb inside the tree and it has various seats and reading nooks built into it. There are places for the children to display paper 'leaves' on the branches, so they can write about the stories they have read to share them with other children and the paper can change colours through the seasons as the display is updated. There are little toadstool and tree stump seats on order and the ceiling will be painted to look like a night sky in that area. I hope it encourages the local children to become interested in reading.

For the teens we have made an area with cushions, beanbags and lots of secluded reading nooks. There are headphones and music players built into the nooks with a selection of background music or nature sounds like rainfall or the sea that readers can plug into and use to block out the world when they want to get lost in a book. Angela helped us by choosing a lot of books that she knew were popular with her classmates and we also consulted the teachers at Forks High and Forks Middle School.

The computer area will have new machines and more ergonomic desks and more comfortable chairs, as well as better options for accessibility than before. We spoke with the staff about the needs of users and got a better idea of how to make the library a welcoming space for everyone.

There will be a special section of books and a designated reading room for Quileute language books and cultural activities. Esme asked the librarians to work with the tribe elders to arrange how they wanted everything set out and the books and resources they wanted placed there.

As we walked through the building, I was able to get a better idea of the space now that the major construction is at an end and the walls have been set in the new configuration. I think it will look very good indeed once it is finished.

The author portraits for the walls are finished now and most of my fore edge paintings as well.
