"Dang it. Why is it so hard for me to earn money?!" Garfield sighed. He wanted to give his best friend a gift but he has no money. He couldn't ask Cy for money from their titan funding because they'd get suspicious. And none of the other titans earn money themselves since theirs comes from Cyborg. And there isn't much job opportunity also. He was kicked from being a mascot for eating the vendor food, zoos and vets are doing fine and nothing about video games nor comics need someone like him. And even when he did ask his friends for help, the jobs were either not open or too low earning in income. Sighing, he went onto the internet to look for stuff when he found something interesting. A stock trader company offering money in a success system. They can invest their money into the company, which then uses the invested money to invest in good stocks on the stock market. The investor gets weekly part of the profit of the company.
Okay, Garfield might be known for some things, and smarts isn't one of them, but his naive criminal background sure helped him perceive something fishy. Such as the choice of words sounding too good, like the phrase too good to be true, the fact it doesn't say what risks are involved, and such. He decided to call Robin.
"Yes?" The titan leader answered.
"Hey Nightwing, I've got a question. I've found this company promising to make people rich, and while that sounds good it also sounds fishy. It's familiar but I can't remember what it's called. It's been so long.
"Those are typically pyramid or Ponzi schemes. They promise money but it's only the person at the top that earns money while everyone else goes into debt or bankruptcy. I've even heard people get so hooked to their money they'd eat it until they have to give back what they didn't eat."
"Man, that's nasty!" Beast recoiled in disgust as he went a little more sickly green than normal for a moment.
"Yeah, so I suggest either ignoring it, or let investigators handle it. Even with our income we can't afford letting someone walk away with that. I'm investigating a museum robbery so we'll talk later.
"'Kay. See ya." Hanging up, Beast thought about it. He checked the site and found it to be about half a year old. Figuring that's a long time for a Ponzi Scheme to remain running without being investigated once, he decided to get some-oh right. Like Robin before when he brought in the other Robins, all the others were busy. Starfire is visiting Tamaran trying to allow Blackfire to return to her home planet by abolishing her exile, Raven and Jinx were at a witch convention that would last for weeks, Cyborg is going through an update which takes much longer than a phone and thus isn't responsive, and all the little buddies are playing with the kids at the orphanage. "Well, looks likes I've got to do this myself." The shapeshifter concluded. Creating a false identity, which is easy to do with the use of Batman's butler, Alfred helping him. He then got one of Cyborg's holo-rings, and put them into a new setting. Appearance wise he changed into a new look. A green 18 year old? That would've looked suspicious, but a fair skinned 50 year old with balding brown hair with grey streaks and a bit of a pot belly? Perfect. "Hmm, hmm. Don't you-" Realizing his voice sounded too high, he used his shapeshifting and coughed until it sounded right, resuming in a way a typical 50 year old voice sounds like, "Hmm, hmm. Don't you look like a capitalistic jerk that's going to get rich?" Sending an email to the company saying he's interested, though would like to have a meeting first tomorrow. Using some emergency money he saved up to buy a boring middle age demographic suit, Garfield went to what appeared to be a small building, where he entered and another middle aged person greeted him.
"Mark Osborn?"
"Yep, that's me." Alfred warned him that using his actual last name might be too closely related and might tie back to him, so he went with something else. The two shook hands. Overall the infiltration went rather well(A/N: I don't know how to write these kinds of meetings, plus it would be boring in detail so I'm summarizing.) He was shown where his investments would go, he asked about said companies and what risks would be involved. Once he left, Garfield looked up all these companies that were indeed profitable. Testing the waters, he invested what emergency money he had left, and in a week gained more than what he had. But as he suspected, the companies were too random in terms of income and didn't seem all that worth the earnings one might gain. How has no one been able to spot this? Taking this to Nightwing and the newly updated Cyborg, the guys hatched a plan.
In the dead of night, a green horned owl landed on the roof of the building, along with Nightwing stepping from the shadows.
"Cyborg, how are you doing on the security system?" The mechanical titan in question was operating from the tower.
"I must say, this is a little hard than I would've guessed. Got some serious firewalls that will take some time to crack. But, I have been able to put all the cameras on loops so you should get in fine without those spotting you."
"See you in there." Beast said to his teammate before turning into a cockroach and went through a crack in the ceiling. Heading to the chief executive room, he crawled out of a small missing section of a ceiling meant for wires and dropped down to the floor under a camera and morphed back to human. He blinked his eyes to shift through different animal's to see whether there was traps. Nothing in ultraviolet with the eyes of a spider, but he did found that with snake eyes, there were spots glowing hot, likely detection lasers. But it was more than that. Footsteps behind the desk lead to a bookcase that disappeared. Sneaking to it, Garfield noticed a book had slightly warm finger prints, so he pulled the book and the shelf lowered into the ground revealing a staircase.
("You haven't lost your touch.") The green titan thought to himself as he turned into a snake and slithered down the stairs silently. Inside was a room filled with two printers and boxes filled with documents. But Nightwing would handle those. He was more curious about the guy leading this operation. Slithering into another room, Beast was surprised that the one behind it all was Gizmo!"
"Haha, what a bunch of brain droolers. While they give me money, I can promise them investments not worth any more than they've given. Soon I'll run and leave everyone's wallets dry! Brother Blood will be pleased with how I was able to get him extra funding." The young prodigy laughed evilly. Beast tried to sneak further in, but a pressure plate detected his weight and Gizmo's computer screen went off with a red warning. A turret opened up over Gizmo and started firing at the snake with lasers, whom turned into a rat so that he was harder to hit, and scampered across the floor until he hid behind a few boxes.
"Beast, I knew you'd try and come to see who was running this Ponzi Scheme."
"How'd you know I'd be here?" Garfield asked. Gizmo turned on his jet pack while two sword like appendages came from his backpack while using his goggles for heat vision, spotting his hiding place.
"No middle age old business man says stuff like 'dude', 'bro' and puts an unnecessary 's' at the end of words." The young titan cursed his surfer like lingo when he was trying to be in disguise. "Now, why don't you come out so that I can mount you on my wall. After all, I know where you are. Like here!" Taking a couple of swipes, he destroyed the boxes before moving so that the laser turrets blasted the area to smithereens.
"Huh? Where did you go?" Gizmo questioned, as he couldn't see anything warm aside from the smoking holes. In truth, Beast turned into the smallest insect he knew, the fairy fly. Since insects don't generate their own heat, he blended into the blue of the heat seeking turrets and goggles, and flew over the kid's attention and head. Flying towards the turret, Beast landed on the base while then turning into a monkey. The turret swiveled around and fired, only for Garfield to jump off and blast its own base, crashing into Gizmo's computer.
"Dang it! You'll pay for that!" Gizmo yelled with fury, only to scream as he was shocked from behind. Nightwing had entered thanks to his supreme stealth skills and used his new shock batons to overload the kid's mechanical backpack. Gizmo collapsed to the ground while the two titans fist bumped.
"Seems like Gizmo was not only giving Brother Blood extra profit, he hacked into the government so that it seemed legit, and bribed a few people in said government so that they'd stay quiet. I'm sure the SWAT teams will have something to say to that." Nightwing explained, though he showed a frown as he thought of it. "However, something doesn't seem right about this. This isn't usually Gizmo's mode of operation, and the other Hive members aren't here at all. Not to mention how he did this. This is much more underhanded. The Hive are anything but subtle. Gimzo will have to be questioned about this.
"Great, while you're doing that, I have something I need to do." Beast said as he turned into a bird and flew off. With getting his money back and a small reward, the shapeshifter knew what to get his mechanical best friend. The newest edition of their favorite game series; Space Rings Guardians.
