The sound of familiar laughter passes by Fox' ear and he can't stop his head from turning to look. He feels slightly bad for being distracted away from his conversation with Cody, rarely ever getting to spend time with him and his other batchmates but Fox can't help it. He knows he shouldn't look but…it's been two months.
Fox sees Quinlan against the bar, leaning slightly towards the vod who most certainly told some stupid joke. Fox highly doubts it was funny however…Quinlan always liked corny jokes. He can hardly temper his anger down at the sight of the vod reaching a hand out to rest against his- the Jedi's forearm. Fox can't look away, not even to engage back into the conversation that his batchmates were in, watching as the vod leans in closer to whisper something in Quinlan's ear. It must have been good if Quinlan's nod is any indication. They both start to get up and Fox...he finishes his shot before excusing himself.
Fox feels very little guilt as he pushes his way past other patrons in his effort to get to Quinlan before he and the unknown vod leave. Fox sees them head out near the back and Fox calls out to stop them.
"Vos!" There is a stutter in Quinlan's step, indicating he heard Fox, but he doesn't look back. Fox growls. "Quinlan!" He yells out, pushing away a drunk vod that stood in his way. Quinlan glances back, catching his eye just slightly before stopping. As Fox nears, he can see Quinlan holding onto the vod's bicep, whispering in his ear. The unknown vod slants a look his way before turning back to Quinlan, nodding before going out the back door.
Quinlan turns around with a sigh and crosses his arms right as Fox stumbles to him. "Didn't think you were on duty, Commander."
Fox can't stop the flinch that passes through him at his title. "I'm not," he says slowly, making sure he doesn't slur before his ex.
"Oh?" Quinlan says, raising his eyebrows. "Then is there a reason you needed me, Commander?"
"Stop that," Fox mutters, shaking his head. "Stop with the titles. I don't-" He must have drunk more than he thought because he can hardly string his words together in what he wants to say.
Quinlan sighs. "What do you want, Fox?"
Fox hates the resigning in the Jedi's voice, the absolute dread that leaks in the words and he can't stop himself from saying, "Replacing me with another vod already?" He internally cringes at his drunk attempt of small talk, but his fingers shake as he remembers the way Quinlan smiled at the vod.
Quinlan drops his arms and says in a tired voice, "Not tonight, Fox."
"What? Can't admit the truth?" Quinlan scoffs as Fox continues. "Hate to say this, Vos, but we all hold the same package."
Quinlan rolls his eyes at the innuendo, plasting a sarcastic smile on his face. "You're really a narcissistic asshole, aren't you?" He chuckles mockingly. "You really think I came in here wanting your dick from one of your brothers?" Quinlan's lips twist into a sneer. "Fuck you."
Fox grits his teeth. This was not how he wanted the conversation to go. "What happened to us, Quin?" He asks, re-directed the conversation. "We were perfect together!"
"Were we? Really?" Fox thins his lips and hates the doubt the passes on Quinlan's face as he says, "we barely even talked to each other."
"There was a war going on. We were busy," Fox excuses and Quinlan shakes his head.
"We barely knew each other," Quinlan says, and Fox breathes in heavily through his nose, fingers curling in a fist. "We latch onto each other out of loneliness, out of desperation."
Rage builds in Fox' chest at the dismissal of their relationship. "Don't say that." Quinlan scoffs at his words.
"It's the truth."
"You didn't want to make it work. If you just gave me a chance-"
"A chance?!" Quinlan interrupts. An incredulous look is all Fox sees passes on his face before Quinlan pushes him back, finger digging into his chest. "I gave you second, third…hundreds of chances and you" he pokes hard into Fox's chest, emphasizing his words. "never took them!" Quinlan pants and Fox' eyes drop to his lips before glancing up to meet his eyes. Eyes which are now starting to water. Quinlan steps back. "I'm not-" Fox watches Quinlan breathe in deeply before continuing, "Don't act as though you didn't see it coming."
Fox stared indignantly. "See it-How could I see it coming? There were no signs!"
"No signs?!" Quinlan throws his hands in the air, a frustrated expression on his face. "There were-there were so many signs. Too many! You-" and here, Quinlan points straight at Fox, tears starting to slowly make their way down his cheek. "You just never cared to see them."
"You never even heard me out." Fox' nose burns, and he has to breathe to keep his cool else he will follow Quinlan's example.
Quinlan thins his lips before a hard look settles on his face. "Why should I? You never cared to listen when I spoke."
Fox feels as though he was shot, breath leaving his lungs. How could Quinlan think that? Fox just stares and licks his lips. He has no words to what he wants to say but he…his chest still aches at Quinlan's words and Fox wants Quin-…Vos to hurt just as much as he is right now. He swallows and it feels like a lifetime before he finally says, "Sorry for being a normal person. Not everyone has the power to read minds at the tip of their fingers." Objects, he knew he should have said but he knows Vos gets the implication by the hurt passing over his face.
Quinlan sniffs and looks to the ceiling, curling his shoulders in as he hugs himself.
"Go home, Fox," Quinlan says tiredly, catching his eye just for a second before looking away. "Just…" Fox watches as he swallows. "…let me enjoy my night. For once, let me pretend this can have a good ending."
Fox just stares even as Quinlan turns and walks out the back door. He barely sees the Vod who waited patiently for the Jedi and can't help the bitterness that builds in his chest. That was not how that conversation was supposed to go.
He should…he should go…Fox sighs, slumping his shoulders. There's nothing he can do anymore. Quinlan chose his decision. Fox can at least be a decent person and try to accept it.
If Quinlan wants to pretend, then so be it. Fox has seen those holos before.
Fox rubs a hand down his face, sighing before going back to his batchmates. He needs another drink. Maybe if he's lucky, he can pretend this never happened.
