Willow flew into Luz's room with her hands over her ears; at that moment she thanked the heavens that crickets were not known for having some of the best hearing in nature, because otherwise she would probably have gone mad. Luz's crying was so loud that for a moment she feared the sound wave emitted by her voice would carry her away. "Luz! Luz, listen to me!"

Useless: the puppet continued to cry without hearing her. How surprising: it was already difficult to hear the sound of such a small cricket under normal circumstances, let alone amidst that cacophony. Willow landed on her nose and flapped before her eyes, opening her legs and wings as wide as possible in an attempt to be noticed. "Luz! I'm here! Look at me!"

The puppet finally became aware of her presence, even though from her perspective the cricket was extremely blurry due to all the tears she had in her eyes. "W-Willow... please... please, h-help me! Take it off me!"

Willow bit her lip; Luz's strangled voice made her want to cry too. The puppet's face was so streaked with tears that if she tried to touch it anywhere it would be no different than falling into a waterfall. "Now calm down! Gus went to talk to Eda, everything will be resolved soon! She's a fairy, she'll put things right in no time! You just have to trust Gus and his persuasion skills! Trust me, he will definitely convince her, he once managed to convince me that it was raining outside when it was sunny!"

But Luz wasn't affected in the slightest by those words and continued to cry louder and louder. "Please... take it off! Cut it off if you have to! I don't want such a long nose! It's... It's horrible! Please..."

Willow was seriously starting to feel sore in her ears, so much so that she blocked them as much as she could with her paws. In the end she couldn't take it anymore and shouted: "Shut up, damn it! I can't concentrate!"

Silence fell on the room. Willow was confused for a moment, and for a second she feared that she had actually ruptured her eardrums and gone deaf, then she realized that Luz had covered her mouth with her hands; she was still crying, but now she was doing so in total silence. She was evidently so desperate that she was willing to obey anything Willow told her to make that very long nose disappear. The cricket felt bad seeing her like this: she was suddenly totally convinced that Gus was right. Luz had deserved that punishment, but now it was really too much. "Um... listen, I need you to look at me now, okay? Keep your eyes on me and just focus on my body, don't look at anything else, and do what I do"

Luz's trembling, teary eyes focused on Willow, so much so that she nearly went cross-eyed. Just as she had taught Gus to do, Willow took a deep breath that lasted as long as each of her paws took to pat the ground; Luz imitated her as she had been ordered, although obviously she didn't clap her hands but simply breathed at the same speed (also because if she had tried to remove her hands from her mouth the room would have been full of her desperate cries again). Willow repeated that gesture over and over, and slowly Luz's breathing became more regular, and although she continued to cry and shake like a leaf, it was much less intense than before. "Good... that's better, right?" Willow said seeing that the puppet finally seemed to have calmed down at least a little. However, she wasn't sure how long she would be able to keep her in that state of mind: she hoped that Gus was hurrying to convince Eda to intervene and that the fairy wasn't too stubborn. "You'll see, everything will work out for the best, you just have to keep looking only at me, okay? Look at me and don't think about anything else..."

Luz was looking at her with such intensity that it almost seemed like she was terrified to even blink. "I... I'm sorry..." she whispered between sobs, slightly moving the hands that covered her mouth. "Please… make it go away… I won't do it anymore… I won't do it anymore!"

Seeing Luz like that, Willow felt like she'd just been stabbed in the heart. She wanted to hug her, try to help her, even just caress her, but she was only a cricket a few centimeters tall and she didn't have the chance to do any of those things. She couldn't even touch her face without risking being overwhelmed by her tears. She could only talk and try to distract the puppet as much as possible from the misfortune that had happened to her, or rather that she had caused herself, but that detail wasn't important at the moment.

But much to Willow's relief, the door finally swung open and Eda walked in carrying Gus on her right hand. "Girls, great news! I convinced Eda, now she'll take care of it!" the spider exclaimed, jumping on the bed and crawling until he reached Luz's ear, where he whispered to the puppet: "If I were you, I would show myself repentant"

He didn't even need to finish the sentence: Luz moved so fast that both Gus and Willow rolled off her body and despite having extreme difficulty due to her nose restricting her movements she got on her knees on the bed and clasped her hands like a if she was praying: "Eda... please... take it away from me... it's terrible... please... I swear I've learned my lesson... I won't do it anymore... I won't tell lies anymore, I promise!"

Looking at her, Eda felt her heart overcome with pity. Luz had cried so much that her clothes had become soaked and she was visibly shaking. However, she couldn't be too tender, not in that situation where severity was a must, so she kept a straight face and crossed her arms over her chest. "Really, kiddo? Do you solemnly promise it?"

"Yes, yes! Never again will a lie come out of my mouth, I swear!" Luz screamed in fits of sobs. By now she seemed on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

Although she wanted to remain stern, Eda couldn't help but show off a pitying expression. At that point she finally surrendered; Gus was right, that punishment could be enough. "Okay" she said, clapping her hands. "Hooty!"

"Yes, Eda?" the long-necked owl exclaimed, poking his head out the window.

"Can you take care of her?"

"Sure, just give me a minute!"

Under the amazed gaze of Gus and Willow and the desperate one of Luz, Hooty began to peck Luz's nose with such force that he reduced it to sawdust, and he did so at an impressive speed, moving and contorting his neck to always hit the spots righteous; every second that passed he swept away a small piece and then he devoured the sawdust that had been created by opening his mouth and swallowing it whole. In less than a minute he had completely erased that extremely long nose from existence; then he gave a few more gentle taps to make sure it was exactly as before, and then he smiled proudly: "That's it! Good as new! I was good, right, friends?"

Luz didn't even listen to him: as soon as the owl had finished she began to frantically touch her nose to make sure that it had really returned to normal size, and even after she was sure of it she still continued to touch it in every corner as if she was afraid that at any moment it would grow again. Seeing that scene, Eda sat down on the bed and put a hand on her shoulder. "It's okay, kiddo. It's back to normal"

Luz froze and looked at the fairy; for an instant she remained completely still, then she threw herself into her arms and clutched her dress tightly, crying even harder than before. "It was horrible… I will never, ever, ever tell a lie again in my life!"

"Good" Eda said hugging her and rubbing her head lovingly. "It looks like the lesson has been really learned"

In the original book, the fairy calls upon a hundred woodpeckers to shorten Pinocchio's nose. But obviously Hooty is infinitely superior, so he thinks about it himself.
