Chapter 2
"Wake up!" We hear a faint voice, and as we make sure they hear it or not, we hear the voice again. "Ohhh...Do wake up, won't you?"
When we slowly open our eyes, we see a Rowlet, a Cyndaquil, and an Oshawott looking at us, along with someone behind the three Pokemon. He is wearing a lab coat with some symbol on it, and he seems to be concerned. "Are you three alright?"
I look around and I find that Alice, Espeon, and Pikachu are slowly waking up, along with my brother, or I should call him Rei. The man says, "You three gave me quite the shock, falling from the sky like that... But thank goodness, you seem unharmed!"
"Um...sorry to be rude, but who are you?" Alice asks.
"I'd like to ask you the same! I mean...you fell out of the SKY, you understand. Come now - who in the world does that?!" The man sighs. "I must say, your clothing is...unusual. You wouldn't happen to have an acquaintance in these parts, would you?"
"I don't know about that..." Rei says, knowing that we have to disguise ourselves like we don't know anything in front of the man.
"I see...You seem to be in a bit of a pickle." The man sighs. "Might I offer some directions? Do you have somewhere around here you could stay?"
"I don't think we have, we don't know where exactly we are." I say.
"So you don't know anyone here, and you don't even know where to spend the night... Well...this is a proper pickle indeed. Are you quite sure you'll be able to survive?" The man continues to ask.
"What do you mean by surviving?" I ask. "That sounds horrifying..."
The man notices our frown and he says, "I see...Well, no gentleman would abandon three people in such need!"
As he hears the three Pokemon's cry, he says, "Oh my, I'd completely forgotten! I had just caught up to these three runaway Pokemon when you tumbled out of the sky...It's almost as if they knew you'd appear here! Ah, but do you even know what a Pokemon is?"
"I mean, you can see that we have those two here." Alice says.
"A Pikachu and an Espeon." The person smiles, "My, that's a relief! Though you fell from the sky, it seems we have some common ground, eh? Yes, well, these three Pokemon belong to me, the mysterious creatures that they are! Oh yes, and...what might your name be?"
"My name is Rei, and this is Ash and Alice." Rei decides to introduce ourselves to him.
"Oho! So you're called Rei, Ash, and Alice! Those names have quite the ring to them! I imagine they must have some lovely meaning. Oh, but I do apologize! I haven't even introduced myself! My name is Laventon. I am something of a Pokemon Professor."
"I guess so, judging by your outfit?" I note.
"That is to say, I'm a scholar seeking to deepen our understanding of Pokemon." Professor Laventon says as he turns to the three Starter Pokemon. "Yes, Pokemon such as these three here, whi-"
Before he can finish, those three Pokemon run off again. Professor Laventon gasps, "Oh, blast and bother! My darling Pokemon! Why must you run from me again?!"
"Does that happen very often?" Alice asks.
"I'm terribly sorry, but do you think you could help me round them up? I beg you!" Laventon says as he runs off, "Wait, you three! Waiiit!"
I turn to the others and say, "That's weird, but does that mean we actually succeeded in traveling back in time?"
"I think that's right. We're now in the Ancient Hisui Region." Rei says. "So have you guys lost anything?"
"We only brought our Rotom Phones and Pokemon... the Pokemon are safe, but the Rotom Phones are gone!" Alice says as she widens her eyes in horror.
"And it is not just the Rotom Phones... all of my 18 plates are also gone as well!"
"Gone? Your plates are gone?" Rei asks, "We have to get them back before we leave this world. If someone with bad intentions holds them, that might be trouble."
Alice then says, "Guys! I found our Rotom Phones!" We notice the devices on the ground, but much to our surprise, the shape is the same as Arceus. Rei picks it up and says, "What is going on here? I mean... the phone's appearance changed."
When we try to ask the Rotom Phone, they also have no idea how it happens, though we have a message that says, "I bestow upon thee this Arc Phone and thy mission: seek out all Pokemon."
"That voice sounds like yours, Ash." Alice says. "Maybe you are aware that you're doing the time travel and this is a gift from you in this timeline?"
"That might explain some things." I say.
Then we find the Professor standing in the middle of the road. "*sigh* Alas...Yet another miss!"
"Is there something wrong, Professor?" I ask.
He turns to us and says, "Aha! I'm glad you've come to my rescue, my new friends from the sky! I tried catching my little runaways by tossing some Poke Bals their way, but I'm not the best at this sort of thing, you see... I'd love to give you a go at it, but perhaps I should tell you a bit about these three first?"
Rei says, "No need, Professor. We already know about them. The Grass-type one is Rowlet, Rowlet can photosynthesize like a plant, and apparently, it battles using its sharp feathers. The Fire-type one is Cyndaquil. The fire burning on Cyndaquil's back will flare up whenever it is surprised or irate. And the final one is Oshawott, a Water-type. Oshawott naps while floating on the water, and it can battle using the shell-like object on its belly."
"So all you need for us is to catch those three Pokemon using Pokeballs?" Alice asks.
"Looks like you've got a hang of it." Professor Laventon takes out 50 Pokeballs, which is different from what we're using right now. "Here you are, these are Poke Balls! Throw these at Pokemon to catch them."
"They look different from what we used to throw, but I guess it would be the same, right, Ash?" Alice asks.
"I guess so." I nod.
"Poke Balls are a recent invention, you see, Throw one of them at a Pokemon, and...why, the Pokemon will shrink down and fit inside the ball, comfy as can be. And with that, you've caught a Pokemon!"
Alice says, "So in this era... Poke Balls are just invented..."
"Yeah...so these are actually the first Pokeballs, and the ones we used in our world are the improvements from this one..." I say.
"I know we've just met, but I'm afraid I've no one else to turn to. I'd be awfully grateful if you could catch my three runaways!" Laventon says as we nod while rushing to catch the three Pokémon. Since we figure that those Pokemon are just Level 5 Pokemon and we might overkill them, we decide to just throw the Poke Ball and capture the Oshawott.
"It seems you three've quite the knack for this Pokemon-catching business. Jolly useful skill to have there." Laventon says. "Still, this is most unusual. You don't seem fearful of Pokemon in the slightest..."
"Well, it is really common from what we came from." I say while throwing another Pokeball at Rowlet, capturing it.
"I can hardly believe it, incredible! You know, many people fear to even approach Pokemon - never mind catch them. Bravo, indeed!"
And then we finally find the Cyndaquil, but as Rei throws the Pokeball, it just breaks out.
"Ah yes, I'm afraid that can happen...Poke Balls are hardly 100% foolproof. Give it another go." Laventon adds.
Rei throws the Pokeball again, and this time it is a success. After returning the three Pokemon to the Professor, he says, "Thank you very much, indeed! Oh, what a relief to have them all back. You see, the three Pokemon you caught have only just arrived at the village to help with our research. They won't yet listen to anyone. And as I mentioned, they bolted from the village almost as if they knew you'd come falling...But I must say, Ash, Alice, and Rei, I was taken aback by how well you use Poke Balls! How is it that you catch Pokemon so ably when you've only just arrived here? One can't help but think there's a reason you appeared here and now..."
"Well, we are on a mission to seek out all Pokemon." I say while showing the Arc Phone and the message.
"What an odd device. Could it be...guiding you somehow?" Laventon asks. "If you'll indulge me for a moment, there's something I'd like to share with you. You see, I have a dream - to complete this region's first complete record of its Pokemon! We in the field call such a catalog a Pokedex. A proper Pokedex is a wonderful work of research, containing detailed records of all the Pokemon to be found in the region! But...in order to properly document Pokemon, one must, of course, catch them. And therein lies the rub, I'm afraid. Poke Balls have only just been invented, and not many have mastered the skill of using them."
"That sure sounds sad." Rei comments.
"Enter you three - three people with clear talents for catching Pokemon! Your goal is to seek out every Pokemon, and mine is to have all those Pokemon caught. A situation ripe for teamwork, don't you agree?"
"I guess so." Alice says. "Maybe we really can help each other out."
"Then whoever and from wherever you may be, I welcome you with open arms!" The Professor smiles."We've a Pokedex to complete! First things first -let's get these Pokemon to the village! Then we'll sort out your lodgings and find you some proper clothes and a meal and all that. Follow me, then! Onward to Jubilife Village!"
As we arrive at the gate, we hear the Professor talking to the guards, who are wearing special uniforms. "Thank you for your tireless work keeping us safe, my good guardsmen! These two young men and woman were of great assistance to me and my Pokemon, so I hope you'll forgive my bringing them into the village for a bit!"
The guards just nod as Laventon calls the three of us to come with him. As we walk inside, we see a lot of villagers who are wearing old clothes as well. We start to get worried as we are the ones who wear casual clothes which belong to the future.
"This way, if you please!" Laventon says as we walk behind the Professor, he says, "Jubilife Village! It's come a long way thanks to the fine people of the Galaxy Expedition Team! This road we're on now is known to the locals as Canala Avenue."
It is actually weird to know the names that are the same from the past, and we also feel uneasy with the people staring at us. "The village was built scarcely two years ago...There's much to do yet and not many to do it." Laventon adds. "And since we know so little of the local Pokemon, people hesitate to set foot outside the village."
The villagers also whisper to themselves, perhaps talking negatively about us due to our outfits or other aspects that mark us as outsiders.
"Now, that impressive building up ahead of us is Galaxy Hall - headquarters for this entire outfit!" Laventon points as the building in front of us, and the symbol is making me worried because it is similar to Team Galactic's symbol.
"Oh, botheration! I'd almost forgotten! I need to go and report that we successfully recovered the escaped Pokemon! Might I ask you to wait for me at the canteen?"
Alice asks, "We can do that. But where is the canteen?"
"It's just past this bridge here, then to the left. The Wallflower, it's called!" Professor Laventon then rushes off.
As we arrive at the canteen, an old man standing in front of it stops us. He looks at us suspiciously and says, "Well now, aren't you awfully suspicious? The Wallflower's for Galaxy Team folk only. We don't have seats for outsiders. Move along!"
"We're sorry if we become a burden." I say as we quickly step backward from the place. Alice says, "I guess since we are in the past, not all people here are as friendly as the Professor..."
"I guess so...but the Professor wants us to be here, and yet he won't let us in...what are we going to do then?" Rei asks.
"Who are you three? I've never seen anyone dressed like you are." Just then, we hear a voice as we turn around, seeing a girl with a beanie and a heavy outfit walking towards us. I have to assume that she is Akari, Dawn's ancestor. "What if you were attacked by a Pokemon? You'd be minced meat in those flimsy clothes!"
"That was really exaggerating..." Alice mutters.
"If the guard lets you through, you must have ties with somebody in the village...Perhaps you've met Professor Laventon? He's a scholar from a faraway place. His Pokemon do get away from him at times, though. It makes me a bit worried for him...I suppose I'm hardly one to talk - I've had some trouble with Pokemon myself."
"What do you mean by that?" I ask with confusion/
"I was hit by a Pokemon move called Thunder Shock not long ago and had to take to my bed." The girl frowns. "But the professor...well...I do wonder how long he'll last."
When she notices Pikachu and Espeon, she takes a step back. I say, "Oh, don't worry. They are our Pokemon. They won't hurt you."
"So you tamed them?" Akari says, and Alice says, "More like being friends with them. They don't like the term tamed."
Akari nods and Alice whispers to me, "Okay, either the Pokémon are more ferocious in the past, or people from the past have a weaker immune system to it... I mean, we have been hit by Thunderbolt a lot of times."
"You're right about that." I sighs. "Maybe we really need to survive in this world..."
"Unfortunately it's just as Akari says...I'm a clumsy sort of fellow, to put it mildly!" We turn around to see Professor Laventon walking towards us.
"Professor!" Akari gasps.
"But everything will be quite all right now! Ash, Alice, and Akari here have agreed to help us with our Pokedex!" Laventon smiles.
Akari doesn't seem to be convinced, and she asks, "Excuse me? You plan to appoint them to the Survey Corps? You can't just slap a badge on whoever you like without Captain Cyllene's permission!"
"I allow it." At this moment, we are surprised to see what seems to be a female Cyrus. Akari gasps, "Captain Cyllene?"
"Assuming the individuals can contribute to the Survey Corps, that is." Cyllene says. "I am the captain of the Galaxy Team's Survey Corps. You may call me Cyllene."
"My name is Ash and this is my partner Pikachu." "I'm Alice, this is Espeon." "And my name is Rei."
"Professor Laventon has told me how you helped secure his Pokemon when they slipped his control, not to mention you have two Pokemon who are already close to you without any problem. And now it seems he would like us to feed and house you in exchange for your ongoing labor." Cyllene looks at us and she continues, "Rei seems to be 16, while Ash seems to be 15, and Alice, 14. Quite old enough to work for your keep. But we can't simply take on strangers who wander in among us, without any idea of their skills or origins."
"Then what should we do?" Alice asks.
"Tomorrow we shall see if you can prove yourself worthy." Cyllene says.
"Oho! A most reasonable decision, Captain." Laventon nods. "Now, would you care to join us for a meal? I'm sure you've got plenty of questions for our visitors!"
"This is quite alright. I prefer to eat alone so I might appreciate my meals without distraction." Cyllene then walks into the canteen and we just stare at the place she was standing.
"Aloof as always, I see." Laventon sighs, "Well, no matter! The rest of us can share a meal and some pleasant conversation, then, eh?"
He yells to the old man who just chased us away, "Beni, old chum! The usual potato mochi, if you please-but make it for five today!"
After we sit down outside the canteen, Beni brings the food to us. We have some potato mochis for dinner, which is not that really special. Laventon says, "Wonderful stuff, Beni! Much obliged. Your potato mochi never fails to please!"
Beni nods as he leaves, and Akari asks, "Professor Laventon, where exactly did you meet our...visitors here?"
"Ah, well, you know of that great hole in the sky? The one people call the space-time rift?" Laventon asks. "Our new friends fell right out of it!"
"You can't be serious." Akari stares at the Professor, who turns serious, "Come now-I am a scientist! My job is to observe and explain any and all phenomena. I concern myself only with facts!"
He turns to us, "Now, you already know there are many Pokemon here in the Hisui region..."
"That there are - in the grass, in forests, by water, or wherever they like. Our job as the Survey Corps is to research them and find out what kind of creatures they are!" Akari nods.
"Well, we know this much..." Laventon says, "Pokemon are terrifying creatures! It's all but impossible to know what kinds of powers they might possess or what sorts of wonderous things they can do. But that's where you three will come in!"
"How so?" Akari asks.
"You notice the Pikachu and Espeon there? They belong to Ash and Alice here. And they successfully caught three Pokemon! Three of them in quick order, you understand! Nobody in the Galaxy Team is capable of a feat such as that. This means we can finally begin our Pokemon research in earnest!"
"Three?! We have a hard enough time catching even one when wild Pokemon come after us..." Akari frowns. "And you're able to get close with them like that?"
"I guess we really are strong compared to others?" Alice whispers to me again, who shrugs back.
"Ah, well, to be perfectly fair, the Pokemon that fled to the beach weren't on the attack. But the key to catching Pokemon is getting close enough to aim your Poke Ball well. And it seems our new friends are fearless enough to do just that!"
Before we can say anything, we hear Beni muttering, "Does the Survey Corps really have the leeway to be enjoying a leisurely meal with these outsiders?"
"Excuse us?" We seem to be a little offended.
"Your captain just ordered 10 whole portions of potato mochi, you know. The slow progress on that Pokedex of yours clearly has her on edge." Beni shakes his head.
"I'm sure we'll start to rein in the good captain's stress-eating soon enough." Laventon assures. "Now, have your fill, you guys! And think! If you three make it into the Galaxy Team, you'll never have to worry about a meal again. The team provides for all its members' needs - even if said members fell out of the sky!"
Then we finish eating our meal, and I say, "Those mochis are quite delicious indeed!"
"Yes, the food was lovely. But more importantly... you do remember that you three have a trial to pass to join the Survey Corps, don't you?"
"But we don't know what the trial is and how to prepare..." Alice frowns.
"Not to worry! I have complete confidence in their skills." Laventon says.
"Let's hope it is not misplaced." Cyllene walks towards us and says, "Ash, Rei, and Alice, wasn't it? For tonight, at least, we will provide you with a place to sleep. You may use our quarters there."
She gives us an address, which turns out to be next to the Galaxy Hall. Cyllene adds, "But if you fail to pass the trial we put to you tomorrow, you must move on. You will be expelled from the village to meet your fate - and perhaps your death - in the wilds."
"Well, surviving in the wild seems more fun to me." Rei says with a shrug as we see the captain leaving.
"Captain Cyllene's somewhat like Hisui, in that they're both quite harsh. Now now, she simply puts on a stern front to help keep us all safe." Laventon adds. "At any rate, I think it's time we turned in for the night, eh? It's a good thing one can't fall out of the futons we sleep in here - I imagine our new friends have had enough falling for one day! And with that, I bid you good night."
After the Professor leaves, Akari turns to them and says, "Yes, good night." Before we leave, we hear her muttering, "A rift in the sky...People falling from it...The world is full of mysteries."
When we get inside the room, we find that there are some futons and a stove, along with some plain furniture like small desks and drawers. I say, "I guess it is not that bad."
"Yeah. But now we are in the past, Phones like Arc Phone don't appear from the past...so what are we going to do then?" Alice asks.
"Let's have some rest, and we will know what we are going to do tomorrow..." Rei says as we decide to sleep.
