I honestly don't know where this sudden obsession with this pairing came from, but here we are! I've been reading so many awesome fic with this pairing, and I just knew I had to write something of my own, and a bit different. So as you no doubt guessed, this is a fic where Bella goes back in time to fix things but ends up in ancient Greece. How this will change the course of vampire history, that's for me to write and for you lovely readers to find out!

She was being followed.
Bella jumped from building to building, clay tiles crunching under her feet, lights flashing against her alabaster skin.
She was in Greece, Athens, to be exact. The ancient city was considered a safe haven for vampires, as per a nomad who claimed the city lacked anti-vampire countermeasures. That seemed to have been a complete lie. She had only been here three months, and they had already found her.
Although a vampire, she didn't particularly enjoy hunting and viewed it as more of a requirement than a pastime. Still, she was an expert huntress, one of the best, she would say. She was always careful, maintaining a low profile by prowling at night, and staying in the shadows and dark alleys. She had seen her target far above a building when she heard it sneak up from behind. Such a thing would have been deemed impossible a century ago. No creature, not even another vampire, could sneak up on her, but a lot had changed in a hundred years.
From the rooftop of a restaurant, she leaped onto the balcony of a house. A woman shrieked, but Bella was nothing more than a blur as she climbed the drain pipes to the roof.
The city bustle filled her ears with the sound of honking cars and chattering people below. A man in the distance shouted at a thief who ran away without paying for his gyro. A couple nearby talked quietly about wanting another child, while a street performer below played loud music for a crowd. The sounds of countless heartbeats seemed to beat together in a tantalizing rhythm. Yet, she paid none of those sounds any mind as she focused on one.
A dog barked in the distance, nails clicking against the pavement. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end as it grew closer and closer.
That was not a normal dog; this one could catch a vampire.
The idea of weaponizing vampire venom was absurd, even to her. But then again, nothing drove human innovation more than a common enemy, as she learned in the past century.
Bella glanced behind her, her eyes briefly widening.
The massive Doberman was at her heels, teeth bared and blood-red eyes fixed on her. She abruptly moved her head forward and pushed herself to run faster.
She heard about humanity's invention from a nomad she stumbled upon a few months ago. Vampire dogs, the nomad had called them. As fast and powerful as a vampire, with a deadlier bite. She didn't want to believe it at first, but seeing was believing.
She kept leaping across rooftops and climbing entire structures to see if the dog would give up. It didn't. Through ponds, buildings and forest, the dog followed her like a shadow, yet she didn't panic just yet. Given the lack of gunshots, she figured it was just the dog after her. If she were in the States, hidden anti-vampiric weapons would have killed her already. Greece truly seemed to be a safe haven due to its lack of weapons. However, it did not lack psychotic, demonic dogs.
Bella ran into an empty alleyway and turned. The dog stopped at the entrance, its shadow looming over her. A fearsome growl echoed between the walls as the Doberman bared its teeth, venom sliding down its lips.
Bella narrowed her eyes.
Long gone was the meek girl who would curl into a helpless little ball. No, she was a huntress now, a fearsome creature that had survived through tooth and claw despite everything. Crouching low, as Jasper had once taught her, she curled her lips back and let out a territorial growl that would have a vampire second-guessing. Her spine tingled as the thrill of the fight woke every nerve in her body, waking the beast inside her. The dog hesitated momentarily, shifting its weight, but refused to retreat.
Suddenly, the dog pounced on her, jaws wide, targeting her neck. Bella stood her ground, waiting for the last moment to move. Just as he was about to sink his teeth into her, she sidestepped. The Doberman's red eyes followed her as he tried to change direction mid-air, but Bella wrapped her arm around its neck and pulled.
A loud yelp reverberated throughout the alleyway, followed by a gruesome snap.
The dog's lifeless body dropped to the ground.
Kill, tear your opponent to shreds, claim your territory, kill, kill, ki—
Bella closed her eyes briefly and exhaled deeply. Reigning the huntress back, she reached inside her pocket and took out a lighter.
The smoke was so small that a passerby might mistake it for a burning trash can. When nothing but ash remained, she looked up at the sky. Golden rays streaked across the horizon as the sun slowly came out.
Bella cursed under her breath.
Great, the sun was coming up, and she had nothing to bring back. Now what was she supposed to—
"Hand over the phone!" A man shouted from an alleyway.
She halted and sprinted towards the sound.
"I'm home," she announced, slipping her shoes off and closing the door behind her. "Got you dinner."
Dusty, stained white walls, and torn furniture greeted her sight. She wrinkled her nose as the usual musty smell offended her senses. It wasn't exactly a five-star hotel, but it was home. Not like they could do much better. People didn't exactly rent to vampires, no matter how much money they had.
Not a second later, a mop of brunette hair peeked his head from the corner of the hallway. Charcoal's eyes searched her until they landed on the floor.
Alex eyed his meal.
"A human," he grumbled, clearly displeased.
Bella sighed, putting the unconscious man down.
She caught him behind a closed restaurant, trying to mug an innocent man. Once more, it reminded her of her younger self, who would have outright refused to hurt a human, much less kill one. But time had changed everything, including her.
Humans, animals — no vampire had the luxury of being picky anymore. Long gone were the days when red-eyed and golden-eyed vampires could sit and debate their diet. Now there was only survival. Still, that didn't mean she fancied herself a heartless killer. She only hunted criminals when there was no other option.
Alex habitually scratched the back of his head as he entered the living room. She knew he was acting unfazed by the blood glinting from the man's head, but could see his fingers twitch as he fought for control.
Alexander Collins was his name. He was turned three years ago when he was only nineteen. She met him in an alleyway in England with a knife sticking out of his stomach, half dead. He was far from the first human she'd seen dying, nor was he the last, yet she couldn't bring herself to keep walking. In the spur of the moment, she took him into her arms and turned him instead.
Bella thought she had a hard life, but Alex had it particularly rough. Having run away from meth-addicted parents at a young age, he lived in the streets, surviving on scraps. A gang stabbed him for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. But despite his harsh upbringing, he was a kind person with a bright soul that reminded her of a young Carlisle. He was compassionate, accepting, and idealistic to a fault. She wondered if it was those qualities that made her protect him so fiercely, prompting her to grasp at anything that reminded her of her past. Regardless of what it was, she was thankful she saved him, as she had someone to care for and a way to fix the mess she created.
Similar to most of the Olympic coven, Alex was gifted with a powerful ability. The ability to send people back in time. It seemed impossible to her that such an ability could exist, as it defied the laws of physics. Yet here he was. She could only imagine how the Volturi would have reacted were they still around. Aro would have no doubt gone to great lengths to collect him. The very thought made her skin crawl.
"It was all I could find. The police have the forest monitored."
She hunted animals for weeks, but someone noticed despite her caution. Regardless of their diet, humans exterminated vampires without prejudice.
"And besides, you'll need the strength," she said, walking further into the house.
Alex followed her closely and searched her expression with slightly wide eyes.
"So we are still on for today?" His question was filled with both uncertainty and a hint of excitement.
Bella glanced at him.
"Yes, but no experiments. You're sending me back tonight."
Uncertainty gave way to panic as Alex's eyes widened further and he clenched his jaw. Bella was not at all surprised by his reaction.
Ever since they learned about his ability, they had been practicing day and night. Time travel was an ability unlike any other. It wasn't physical, and it wasn't exactly psychic either, as he manipulated the surrounding atoms. To be honest, she wasn't entirely sure how it worked. But after much trial an error, Alex could finally send animals back in time without injury. Unfortunately, that didn't mean there weren't any risks. He still hadn't tried his ability on anything but animals.
"So soon? I mean, there's still so much to discuss and I honestly don't know if I can do this, I've never sent anything this far behind, much less a human and never mind a vampire," he mumbled, biting his nail "I mean, what if I sent you—"
Bella shook her head.
"Alex."
Alex's lips pressed together, giving the impression of a kicked puppy.
With a sigh, Bella faced him.
"I didn't want to tell you, but Greece doesn't seem like a safe place anymore. Those vampire dogs the nomad warned us about are real, and one nearly caught me."
Alex halted abruptly, with a wild expression on his face, as he absorbed her words.
"Wait, seriously?"
She nodded.
"Fuck," he breathed, realizing how precarious their satiation was.
"Yeah, and it's only a matter of time before they figure out something happened to their pet and come after us. And honestly, I don't know where else to run to anymore."
Bella stopped and took a deep breath as slivers of panic rose inside her.
The last thing Alex needed was to see her lose her calm. Once again, she reminded herself of how bad she was at being a coven leader, if she could call themselves that. If only Carlisle or even Edward were here. They'd know what to do, how to proceed, and what to say to inspire confidence. But they were gone, and both Alex and the fate of vampire kind were stuck with her.
"All the people we knew—all our friends, our family—are dead. I don't even know if there are any vampires left, or—"
She shook her head. She refused to consider that idea. They couldn't be the only ones left of their race.
"I know we haven't tried your abilities on vampires or humans, but I have to leave today because, honestly, I'm not sure if we'll make it through another night."
Alex pursed his lips and scratched the back of his head.
She hated unloading all of this on his shoulders, knowing how much he suffered as a human and now a vampire, but she had no other choice. It was now or never.
"Yea, but —" he sighed and his shoulders slumped. "Okay, let's do it."
She smiled gently and led him back to the door.
After Alex killed the human, Bella sat on the torn sofa as she waited for him to shower and change. Eyes closed, she tried to keep her mind from wandering, but failed.
Edward, Renesmee, Jacob, Charlie, Renee, Alice, Jasper, Carlisle, Esme, Emmet, Rosalie, and countless others popped into her head. They were all gone, and out of all of them, only her parents died a natural death. A part of her felt hollow at the thought. Even her sweet daughter, who she fought so hard for, was killed four years ago alongside her best friend. And now she had no one left but Alex.
Anger rose inside her.
Despite her constant self-justification that killing humans was a necessity, she was only deceiving herself. Humans took everything from her. She recognized it was wrong to judge an entire race for the mistakes of a few, but her beastly and vengeful side didn't care. Humans' inability to see reason and turning against them, even those who didn't harm humans, changed her perception of mortals. The huntress inside her reared its head at her anger.
'Pathetic humans,' it spat in her head.
They were no better than animals, scuttling around in fear at what they didn't understand. She could not speak for the others, but her family was innocent. They didn't kill humans, and yet—
"Am I interrupting?"
Blood-red eyes snapped open. She turned her head and looked up, the voice of the huntress receding to the back of her head.
Alex stood beside her, his hand on her shoulder as he looked at her with a compassionate yet sorrowful smile. Realizing that she was clutching the armrest too tightly, she eased her grip and inhaled deeply.
"Sorry, I was just—"
"I know," he muttered and sat opposite to her.
"So, when you get to the past, how are you gonna explain to everyone that there's two of you when you get there?" He asked, changing the topic.
Bella pressed her lips together. She'd nearly forgotten that time travel resulted in two versions of her existing in one timeline. Honestly, she hadn't thought about what she would do about her past self. The huntress part of her wanted to reclaim her life by getting rid of her old self, but—
She mentally shook her head.
No, she shouldn't be thinking that far ahead. Stopping the war between the Cullens and the Volturi is what mattered. She would contemplate what to do next after dealing with the threat.
"I won't," she said simply. "I'm not going to show myself to the Cullens."
Alex scowled and tilted his head.
"Then how are you going to prevent all of this from happening again?"
"I'm going to the Volturi and explain everything."
Silence dominated the room. Alex just sat there, staring at her as if she'd grown another head.
"That's a joke, right?" He asked, chuckling nervously. When she said nothing, he seemed to grow paler than usual. "You're crazy!"
Alex jumped to his feet.
"Alex—"
"This is insane, Bella. I mean, I never met them, but from what you told me, that seems like suicide! You're talking about going straight to the organization that wanted you and the Cullens dead, and telling them what? To change their minds? Like that worked the first time." He growled. "This is the only chance we got to fix everything, and you're handing yourself over on a silver platter!"
"I have to try."
He opened his lips, but she spoke first.
"I can turn off my ability, something I didn't know back then, and show Aro everything. That man was many things, but careless is not one of them. He will see what going to war with the Cullens will cause, and he will change his mind. I know it."
Alex didn't seem at all convinced as he pressed his fist to his lips.
"And if he doesn't?"
Then they are all doomed. She would be forced to witness it all again if history repeated itself. The difference was that she had the chance to save Edward, Renesmee, and Jacob this time, unless the Volturi killed her on the spot.
"Then I would have gambled away my last card."
Alex's brows crushed together, clearly displeased with the plan. She knew he cared about her deeply, seeing her almost like a mother figure. Although her maternal side had died with her daughter, she still cared for him. Alex was just a child trying to survive in this world, which is why succeeding was so important. If she stopped this whole war between vampires and humans, then he could go back to living a normal life, one devoid of bloodshed, hiding, and killing.
Alex sighed.
"Is there really no other way?"
She shook her head.
He visibly deflated.
"Alright, let's do it then."
Alex joined his hands together in a triangle, brows furrowed into deep concentration. Bella did not dare utter a word, but when his hands shook and he took longer than usual, she pulled her lips into a calm smile.
"You can do this," she assured gently.
He nodded, but didn't seem too sure as he looked at her with terrified eyes when his hands glowed with his ability.
"You'll look for me, right?"
Bella nodded.
"Of course," she paused as a thought popped into her head. "I gotta ask though, do you still want me to turn you into a vampire?"
Alex blinked, clearly not having thought about that before.
"I —" he paused and mulled over the answer. "Nah, I want to stay human, but if you can stop me from getting stabbed, that'd be great!"
Bella smiled. She thought as much.
The glow in Alex's hands grew brighter, and the surrounding atmosphere seemed to come alive as it electrified her body. Snapping his gaze from his hands to her, he forced a smile.
"Oh, and if you can give me the lottery numbers, that would be swell!"
She snorted.
"Hilarious."
Her young fledgling continue to give her a terrified smirk, and she rolled her eyes.
"I'll see what I can do."
The energy swelled around her until the light from Alex's hand surrounded her, causing her hairs on the back of her neck to stand on end.
"Bella?" Alex called with a shaken voice, but she couldn't see him anymore.
The light grew more and more intense to where it was uncomfortable, even for her. Closing her eyes, she covered her face with her arm and gritted her teeth. She couldn't see, hear or smell, she couldn't feel anything and at that moment, fear gripped her. But her determination was stronger.
"It'll be alright, just keep going!"
Everything suddenly stopped. The energy snapped, and for a second she thought it would kill her, but it dissipate instead. Her senses came back to her, hitting her like a truck. The sound of birds singing rang in her ear. Sea air wafted into her nose, and hard sand and rocks dug against her sandals. Slowly, afraid of what she would see, she opened her eyes.
Despite having eyesight far greater than any creature, she still had to blink a couple of time to adjust her sight. However, as soon as she adapted, she became motionless.
Where was she?
When Alex sent an animal back in time, they always appeared in the same spot. If that was the case, then she should be inside the same house, being yelled at by an old Greek couple. Yet there was no sight of the house, in fact there were no houses, period. The only things visible to her were empty fields and rocks extending as far as the eye could see. In the distance sat a fort of some kind atop a hill, but that was it.
Bella turned. She recognized the sea as the Mediterranean that surrounded the city, but no Athens.
She stood still when an explanation dawned on her. No, that couldn't be right.
Turning on the spot, she moved her legs until she was a blur. Bella ran and ran. She went to where England was supposed to be, but found only forests and villages. The Thames had never looked cleaner. In denial, she went to Spain but found only a few villages and fortifications. No roads, no building, no obnoxious cars, not even pollution, there was nothing.
Upon returning to Athens, Bella's chest rose and fell, but not from exhaustion.
No, no, no, this couldn't be right. Where did Alex send her? Just as panic seized her, she felt a presence behind her. Enraged, irritated, and utterly confused, she was about to let it all out on the poor person when a familiar scent hit her. Her muscles all tensed up at once.
If her heart was still pumping, it's been hammering against her chest as she slowly turned on the spot. As soon as she confronted the person, her muscles tensed up all at once.
Could vampires go into shock? She asked that same question before, but she honestly didn't know still. One thing she knew was that she nearly keeled over.
A man stood in front of her. His hair was wavy and slightly curly towards the end. Covering his form was a well worn, slightly dirty white tunic that was more beige from constant washing and exposure to the sun. His feet were bare, with just a layer of dirt on the soles. But it was not his clothes or feet that froze her on the spot. No. It was the face, the product of her hate, and oh so familiar despite the long years.
Aro stood before her, wide eyed and so painfully young.
Bella opened and closed her mouth at least a hundred times before finally saying,
"what the—"
A bit of a fast beginning, and probably gave you more questions than answers, but I swear they'll be answered in time! Like what happened to the Cullens, Jacob and Renesmee?
As for Aro, I couldn't make up my mind if he's a vampire or human at the beginning. So I thought I'd ask what you guys think? Should he be a vampire, or a human?
