Found this in the depths of my ffn account. Don't even remember writing it but apparently i sent it out to a beta that I seem to have ghosted for the last 8 years. So uh, enjoy.

*Ding-Dong*

'Who might it be? Ran said that she was going somewhere with the Suzuki girl and that she won't be back until dinner, so who could it be?' Kogoro thought as he headed towards the door.

What he saw when he opened it was someone he never expected, Kudou Shinichi.

''What are you doing here brat?'' Kogoro asked.

Shinichi said nothing. Pushing his shoes off, he stumbled into the Mouri's living room where he sunk into the couch, a blank expression on his face.

''What's wrong?'' Kogoro asked, concerned as to why his school friend's son was in the living room of his house, tears forming in his eyes.

The reply he got was Shinichi curling up into a ball, a hand extending out. Kogoro spotted a piece pf paper in the boy's hand and pulled it out.

Hey Shin-chan! We're going to America!

Don't worry, we left your dad's platinum credit card for you to use in case you need to buy something.

Hope you'll take care of yourself! Agasa-Hakase will be there if you need anything.

We trust you to stay safe! Bye!

The words written there surprised him but also angered him. Yes, he might not have payed attention to Ran that much these days because he thought she was capable enough to take care of herself but he also had never completely left her alone. He always made sure that Ran knew that she could come to him if she had any trouble.

He looked over to Shinchi. The boy looked absolutely miserable. He supposed he would be too if his parents had decided to leave him alone or if they had chucked him out of the house. But he can't empathize with the boy because he was the one who left home on his own after high school because he wanted to be independent.

He understands why the boy came to him instead of Agasa. No matter how close he is to Shinichi, the man never had children of his own. He wouldn't know what to do.

Sudden sniffling startled him out of his thoughts. He whipped around trying to find the source of the sound. He located it coming from Shinichi. He stared for a while. He had never expected the boy to start crying. As far as what he heard from Yukiko, Shinichi hadn't cried since he was a small kid, about 3. But now that he thinks about it, he remembers making a promise to Eri and Yukiko that he would stay strong and never cry cause he was a boy and ''boys don't cry''(according to Yukiko) when he was in elementary school. But he still cried, only in private so the girls wouldn't find out. Maybe Shinichi did the same thing. He was still a kid. Kids can't help but cry sometimes. He knows the boy doen't want pity, so he does the only thing he can think of; pulling him into his own lap while hugging him tightly. It was what he used to do with Ran when she came to him when she had nightmares after Eri left. He wanted to support the boy through his time of need.

As he suspected the boy tensed up underneath his arms, but he slowly relaxed into Kogoro's grip, sobbing into his shoulders. Shinichi fell asleep a while later, still in Kogoro's arms. That's how Ran found them both after she came back from her shopping spree, asleep on the couch,Kogoro's arms wrapped around Shinichi and Shinichi himself lying on top of Kogoro, tears tracks staining his cheeks.

She never had asked why.

Might rewrite this. I'm not really satisfied with the level of this compared to my other old works. And some of the sentences are just odd.

Also, im not in this fandom anymore. Did we get any backstory about the Kudou family at all in the past 5 years?
