STARFLEET INTELLIGENCE FILE 1546

CLONE WARS:

All information on the civil war, labelled the Clone Wars has been collected as a means to insure the war does not spill over into the Milky Way Galaxy.

REPUBLIC MILITARY

The current form of military is the Grand Army of the Republic, a clone army commissioned in response to the growing civil unrest led by warriors known as Jedi (See Jedi for more information). Though recognized as legitimate by the Supreme Chancellor the fact that an army of nearly limitless soldiers to fight in this war has been considered suspicious by many in Starfleet Intelligence. The Clone Army is divided into smaller armies that establish and protect military command centers that operate in theatres known as oversectors or priority sectors. Each sector army usually numbers one thousand fifty troopers but there are times when they are expanded.

Each sector army is divided into four subordinate corps, of which three are further divided into smaller components. One is maintained as a mobile reserve force while the others are divided into smaller units.

The fact that both sides are continuing to fund their armies while at the same time cutting funding for education, water, and power is concerning to say the least and it has been suggested that there is more to this war than meets the eye. Though the Prime Directive prevents Starfleet from interfering we also bound by our duty to protect our own galaxy from any possible threat and there are many who suggest we must investigate the 'true cause' of this war.

CONFEDERACY OF INDEPENDENT SYSTEMS

The Confederacy of Independent Systems, also known as the Confederacy, the CIS, the Separatist Confederacy, Separatist Alliance, the Separatist State, the New Order, the pro-secessionists, or the Separatists were formed by various planetary and sectorial governments as well as mega-corporations that have elected to leave the Republic due to excessive taxation and claiming corruption in the Galactic Senate. Tensions eventually developed into full scale war between the two states that have yet to be solved. The current Head of State is Count Dooku of Serenno, followed by the Separatist Council who are also heads of the mego-corporations that supply the Confederacy with droid armies used to fight against the Republic clone army.

Technology

The Confederacy uses similar technology and tactics as the Republic, such as the use of hyperdrive for travel and the way they land their ground forces complete with carriers for their droids and heavily armed tanks that run on anti-gravity for use against opposition. The Confederacy specializes in creating various droid models to field against the Republic but their AI programming is considered primitive compared to AIs and androids like Captain Data and Borg drones.

Military

The Confederacy's military is a mix of droids, organic forces, and local warriors. The majority of the commanders were for the most part merchants more experienced in commerce instead of battle. The Supreme Commander is General Grievous, a cyborg of unknown origins who has been labelled a successful commander by the Separatists and a butcher and murderer by the Republic for his brutal tactics. The common tactic of the Confederacy is to deploy their droids in large numbers, outnumbering the enemy usually three to one but with a skilled commander the numbers can be defeated unless they have a skilled commander of their own.

The Confederacy has droid models designed for use on land, air, underground, and underwater and are immune to any form of atmosphere that is either toxic to organic or the temperature makes it impossible for organics to fight in. The Confederacy for the most part is unable to completely deploy its droid armies in a full-on attack due to its scattered territories, maintaining a defensive by blunting Republic advancements into their territories and an offensive one consisting of surgical strikes and terror operations.

STATUS OF CLONE WARS

In the wake of the battle of Genonosis where war was formerly declared, both the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy have seemingly entered into a period of keeping to their face, most conflicts being only small-scale raids. Confederacy space is split and spread across the Outer Rim of the Skyriver Galaxy with only a handful of planets aligned with them located in the Core.

List of Inner Rim CIS Aligned Planets:

Cate Neimoidia

Scipio

Castell

Foerost

All of these planets are under Republic blockades, cutting them from support. The Confederacy, due to their space being splintered and scattered, are pursuing to control the main hyperspace lanes connecting their space to the Republic, undermining Republic support, cutting key supply lines and are seemingly attempting to expand their space. Likely they will have a massive advantage if they manage to connect their territories. As of now, they are forced to rely on striking raids into Republic Space and seizing hyperspace routes to defend their territories and deploy their forces.

Starfleet has ordered all none-essential ships and personnel to return to Federation allied space such as the Naboo system or the Milky Way Galaxy with the mandate clear to avoid being drawn into the war but will allow for refuges to continue to enter Naboo system and enter our galaxy. It has drawn several protests that allowing the number of refuges would lead to an overflow that the Federation is not yet properly prepared to handle. We must also consider the possibility that either side will send infiltrators through the refuges to gain a tactical advantage. For the past ten years refuges have come through the rift and into our universe and proper measures have been taken to weed out any potential agents, but the recent declaration of war has led to the number of refuges accelerating at a level we might not be prepared for.

HIDDEN CLONE TROOPER PROGRAMMING

Clone Troopers injured or killed during the Battle of Geonosis were scanned and treated by Starfleet personnel led by Dr. Leonard McCoy of the Enterprise. His readings have found that the Clone Troopers have been genetically engineered to be as perfect as possible without going beyond the threshold between Man and Augment. Their eyesight is perfect and they are in perfect healthy condition of men in their supposed age. However, Dr. McCoy has discovered an alteration to their metabolism, age and growth factors.

Genetic modifications done by the Kaminoan cloners that created the Clone Army allow for the Clones to grow twice the speed of a normal human but also shortens their life span to about half the length. This modification was likely done to ensure that the army would be fully grown and in acceptable numbers by the time the war began. There is another modification to take note, a bio- surgically implanted into the brains of every single clone, likely while still in their embryo state given the estimation of the chip's age by Dr. McCoy who preformed a detailed scan of each clone he had treated and forwarded a full report to Starfleet. The implant is ninety degrees from the right orbital floor, below the parietal and temporal intersection which to Dr. Mccoy concludes that the implant was designed for intercepting and likely altering the brain's emotional and thought processing, making them subjective to whatever directives are placed in the implant.

Further study if given the chance is recommended.

"Captain's log. Stardate 8130.3, Starship Enterprise on training mission to Gamma Hydra. Section 14, coordinates 22/87/4. Approaching Neutral Zone, all systems functioning."

The crew were all at their stations as expected with Commander Sulu at the helm, Commander Uhura at the Comm Console, Dr. Leonard McCoy and Spock at his post. The Captain however was new and unexpected. Lt. Saavik was young and beautiful. She was half Vulcan and half Romulan but in appearance she was Vulcan with pointed ears, but her skin is fair and she has none of the expressionless facial immobility of a Vulcan.

"Leaving Section Fourteen for Section Fifteen." Sulu reported.

"Project parabolic course to avoid entering Neutral Zone." Saavik ordered.

"Aye, Captain."

"Captain..." Uhura called out from her station. "I'm getting something on the distress channel. Minimal signal... But something..."

"Can you amplify?" Saavik questioned.

"I'm trying..."

"Course change projected." Sulu reported.

Uhura seemingly managed to clear up the signal. "It's an emergency distress call!"

"On speakers!" Saavik immediately ordered.

A filtered voice came in through the speaker but was breaking up. "Imperative! Imperative! This is the Kobayashi Maru – nineteen periods out of Altair Six. We have struck a gravitic mine and have lost all power... Our hull is... and many casualties."

"This is the Starship Enterprise." Uhura answered. "Your message is breaking up. Give your coordinates. Repeat-"

"Enterprise, our position is Gamma Hydra, Section Ten...

"In the neutral zone." Saavik muttered.

"Hull penetrated, life support systems failing. Can you assist us, Enterprise? Can you..." The message broke up, leaving only static.

"Data on Kobayashi Maru!" Saavik turned to the viewscreen that was currently on tactical setting.

"Subject vessel is third class neutronic fuel carrier, crew of eighty-one, three hundred passengers."

"Damn." Saavik turned to Sulu. "Mr. Sulu, plot an intercept course."

Everyone on the bridge paused as Sulu looked to Saavik. "May I remind the Captain that if a Starship enters the zone-"

"I'm aware of my responsibilities, Mister." Saavik cut him off.

Sulu sighed and nodded, turning to his console. "Course plotted and projected."

The tactical screen showed the Enterprise was now approaching the Neutral Zone.

"Now entering the Neutral Zone..." Sulu announced.

"Warning. We have entered the Neutral Zone... Warning..." The computer announced, the tactical screen showing the Enterprise entering the zone.

Spock turned to Saavik. "We are now in violation of treaty, Captain."

"Estimating two minutes to intercept." Sulu stated.

On screen: the Enterprise approached the stricken vessel.

"Stand by transporter room, ready to beam survivors, aboard." Saavik ordered.

"Captain, I've lost their signal!" Uhura called out.

"Alert. Sensors indicate three Klingon Cruisers, bearing 316, mark 4, closing fast." The computer announced.

"Visual!" Saavik immediately ordered.

On screen they could see the approach of the Klingon vessels, looking dark and sinister.

"Battle stations! Activate shields!" Saavik said as the alarm sounded.

A beeping sound from the tactical station showed that the ship's shields had been raised.

"Shields activated!" Sulu spoke up.

Saavik turned to Uhura. "Inform the Klingons we are on a rescue mission..."

"They're jamming all frequencies, Captain." Uhura replied.

"Klingons on attack course and closing." The computer informed them and the viewscreen verified this.

Saavik made an agonized choice. "We're over our heads. Mr. Sulu, get us out of here."

"I'll try, Captain." Sulu said but did not sound confident as he began plotting a course out of the Neutral Zone.

"Alert! Klingon torpedo firing!" The viewscreen showed a Klingon cruiser firing photon torpedoes.

"Evasive action!" Saavik called out.

Sulu did his best, but the Enterprise was hit and Sulu was hurled from his station, and Bones hurries to him.

Saavik tapped the comm switch on her chair. "Engineering! damage report!"

"Main energizer hit, Captain!" Scotty's voice came over the intercom.

"Engage auxiliary power. Prepare to return fire!"

The bridge took another hit; a big one. In its wake there was a second electrical explosion along the communications panel and Uhura fell from her station. McCoy rushed to her side amid the smoke and alarms.

"Shields collapsing, Captain!" The cadet at the tactical station reported.

"Captain, we're losing auxiliary power!"

"Fire all phasers...!" Saavik ordered.

"No power to the weapons system, sir." Spock reported before there was another hit, reverberating flashes of spark and flame on the bridge.

Spock seemingly died McCoy tried coming to him, but even as he coughed his way through the smoke, a there was a final hit and McCoy fell. The room was smoke filled and in shambles. Saavik looked about in shock.

"Captain, it's no use. We're dead in space."

Saavik digested this for a painful moment then, touched a comm button. "Activate escape pods. Send out the Log Buoy... All hands abandon ship. Repeat, all hands-"

"All right, open her up." A filtered voice suddenly said.

The side walls of the 'bridge' slid apart, revealing a lighted room beyond. Through the opening strides, someone entered. He stopped, surveyed the shambles, and shook his head.

"Any suggestions, Admiral?" Saavik stood up from the chair.

"Prayer, Mr. Saavik. The Klingons do not take prisoners." The man answered. "Lights."

The lights turned off, revealing the man to be Admiral James T. Kirk who took another moment to survey the bridge before speaking up. "Captain."

Spock opened his eyes, having been only playing dead as part of the simulation.

He stood up and walked over the admiral. "Trainees to the briefing room."

Sulu awakened with a grin as Uhura straightens herself demurely. The Trainees headed toward the distant room as Spock rose and left. McCoy remains on the floor, head propped in his hand, whimsically as Kirk walked by him.

"Physician, heal thyself." Kirk commented.

"That's all you have to say?" McCoy asked with a smile. "What about my performance?"

"I'm not a drama critic."

McCoy rolled his eyes and rose.

Kirk saw Saavik had not moved from the command chair. "Well, Mr. Saavik, are you going to stay with the sinking ship?"

"Permission to speak candidly, sir?" Saavik asked.

"Very well."

Saavik was fighting not to show emotion with her Vulcan training. "I don't believe this was a fair test of my command capabilities."

Kirk looked amused, "And why not?"

"Because... there was no way to win." Saavik answered, as if she had lost a game.

"A no-win situation is a possibility every commander may face. Has that never occurred to you?" Kirk pointed out and questioned.

"... No, sir. It has not." Saavik admitted.

Kirk lightly paced behind Saavik. "How we deal with death is at least as important as how we deal with life, wouldn't you say?"

Saavik's emotional control seemed to falter for a second. "As I indicated, Admiral, that thought had not occurred to me."

"Then you have something new to think about. Carry on." Kirk said, seemingly done with the conversation.

Saavik simply stood at attention as Kirk moved to leave the room but was stopped by McCoy's voice. "Admiral?"

He turned and saw McCoy along with Uhura and Sulu at the helm/navigation station.

"Wouldn't it be easier to put an experienced crew back on the ship?" The medical officer asked.

"They'll learn." Kirk simply said. "Galloping about the cosmos is a game for the young, doctor."

He left and the three looked at each other.

"What is that supposed to mean?" Uhura asked, feeling offended.

Kirk rounds the corner of the corridor outside the simulator room and saw Spock, leaning against the wall. "Aren't you dead?"

Spock raised an eyebrow, giving the impression he was almost smiling.

"I assume you are loitering here to learn what efficiency rating I plan to give your cadets." Kirk continued.

"I am understandably curious." Spock simply stated as they walked together.

"They destroyed the simulator room and you with it." Kirk was rather blunt in his statement.

"The Kobayshi Maru scenario frequently wreaks havoc with students and equipment." Spock said in a rather dry tone. "As I recall you took the test three times yourself. Your final solution was, shall we say, unique?"

"It had the virtue of never having been tried." Kirk said solemnly.

"Yours was not a solution which would have occurred to a Vulcan mentality." Spock continued.

"So, you said at the time. Speaking of which, your protege's first rare - a trifle emotional-" Kirk trailed off.

"She's half Romulan, Jim. The admixture makes her more volatile than - me, for example." Spock stated.

"Than you. Yes, I see that." Kirk stopped and held up the book he had been carrying. "By the way, thank you for this."

"I know of your fondness for antiques." Spock said as Kirk opened and read from a random page.

"'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...' Message, Spock?" Kirk asked with a raised eyebrow.

"None of which I am consciously aware - except, of course, happy birthday - surely the best of times." Spock answered.

Kirk looked around uncomfortably. "Hrummm... and where are you off to, now?"

"To observe the other class of cadets, our first ones from the Skyriver Galaxy and then the Enterprise. I must check in before your inspection. And you?" Spock questioned.

"Home." Kirk answered shortly.

Spock studied him. "Something oppresses you."

They are old friends, of course Spock would notice something might be bothering him. "Something."

He stepped into a turbo elevator and the doors closed as Spock watched.

"In this simulation, you will be in command of the starship Enteprise, patrolling the Neutral Zone. Any ship that enters the zone on either side will be considered an act of war. Do you understand?"

"Yes sir."

"Then proceed, Captain Thrawn."

A blue skinned man in a Starfleet uniform emerged from a turbo-lift and onto the bridge of the ship he had been chosen to command. He looked around, taking in the bridge and all its features before taking his seated position, the Captain's Chair.

"Begin."
