Who was the first human to ever exist..?
.
.
.
Not many believed in the idea of the 'first human.' To say there was a "first" would be a mockery of today's science since all life began with a single organelle. Soon that single organelle became dozens of cells, then those cells became tissues, and lastly an organ system. Combine all that and you have an organism, creating life as we know it. And with life came humans.
But the proper answer to that question is with another question, how did humans come to be? A majority of humans believed it to be a God or a Great One to some. However, some humans believed it to be from a scientific point of view, where life came to exist naturally.
Debates, fights, wars, bloodshed, and many lives were lost due to this question… A painful reminder to many.
In the end, where all humans believed there to be a higher being, their beliefs were crushed in favor of the winning side… but the question still lingered in the human heart; does God exist?
They didn't have to wait long for that answer…
It pains me to see my very own children see the answer to that question in accordance with certain death.
My children covered in dirt, grime, scars, and hygiene the least of their concerns, survived without believing in the existence of god(s), believing in their own survival skills, but secretly they prayed for a better winter along with plentiful food, water, shelter, and lastly a lavish life to brothers and sisters.
My children prayed without a particular god in mind, they hoped that the unknown god(s) would hear their prayers.
…They never did, although that never stopped my children from combining the meaning of hope with the image of god(s).
But to see the gods, who gave my children hope for a better life, turn on them and announce that mankind will be on the path of extinction, brought a deep passion that I've had since the very beginning of my existence. It sat quietly within my heart, mind, and soul but now it returned; to protect my children, and to be the one to give my children hope against the gods that were my children's embodiment of hope.
"Ah… Somewhere out there… a baby is crying… it's alright… don't cry… your dad's here to protect you."
It all went black… My senses were lost. I've lost the sense to feel Eve's embrace and my children's hands. I've lost my sense of sight, I won't ever see my children's emotions again, their frowns, their anger, their anguish, their sweet smiles, and their faces filled with hope.
I've lost the ability to appreciate how truly magnificent Eve smelled whenever we embraced. Where grass thrived flowers thrived as well and for there were flowers meant there were flowers to be picked.
Every flower reminded me of her, her sweet fragrance is one of the many reasons why I love and fight for her.
But as everything became silent, one thought crossed my mind… I won't ever hear Eve's sweet laugh anymore along with her cries whenever she's in pain. I wouldn't be able to hear my children's cries for help, their pleas, or the sweet sound of life being born as a son or daughter joins the family.
No, that thought didn't bring me pain. You can take all of my senses and my soul, my body, my mind, but I will not tolerate anyone, be it god(s) or not, killing a single one of my children.
I couldn't feel a thing but I fought.
.
I couldn't see a thing but I fought.
.
I couldn't hear a thing but I fought.
.
I couldn't smell a thing but I fought.
.
I couldn't taste a thing but I fought.
.
I could sense their hope; I fought to protect my children.
.
But I wouldn't be able to appreciate their gratitude, to see their sweet smiles…
.
Because I've already taken my last breath…
A girl stood, and where she stood, stood a window in front of her. She hated feeling gloomy and under the weather. She liked to think of herself as a person who has to always be happy, she believed if she was always happy then others would always be happy as well. It was a selfish quirk, but it was how she was.
But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't bring herself to be happy. Her older sister had forgotten to read her bedtime stories for the entire week and today was no different, even her father wasn't any better. Her dad kept on drinking, of course, he never laid a single finger on them, but he would always cry whenever he stared at her for too long.
The girl understood why, it wasn't because she was ugly and her father was revolted at the sight of her, no, it was because she looked very similar to her mother, Summer Rose. And her mother is the reason why her family is like this. After her uncle's visit her dad and older sister haven't been the same.
She wasn't dumb, she knew that something horrible must've happened to her mother, but the thought of her mother dying was the very last thing she wanted to think of, it was on the very bottom of the list of 'this is probably what happened.'
"Ruby, stop staring into space. If we stay up late dad's going to get mad." A young girl with long luscious blonde hair lying on a bed that sat on the other side of the room where Ruby stood. She wore a tired look a child shouldn't have.
"But Yang… mom might come back any moment now." Ruby turned towards Yang. A look of longing sat on Ruby's face which caught Yang off-guard causing her face to soften.
Yang loved her sister deeply. To the point that if a bully were to even pull a strand of Ruby's hair she would beat the bully to a pulp till a teacher came to stop her. It always ended with the latter.
"She's not coming back…" Yang said with a hitch in her voice.
Yang knew that her supposed mother wasn't coming back. She easily accepted that she died, which is what she thought. But the ease of accepting her death wasn't because she was strong but it was because she found out that Summer Rose isn't actually her mother but it was Raven Branwen who's her true mother.
But she didn't understand why a strong feeling of pain continued to linger in her heart, even more, when she spoke of the death of her 'mom.'
It wasn't like her 'mom' was her real mom, a thought that Yang kept telling herself. But she knew that it didn't matter if she was her real mom or not because she was the one who loved her when her real mom abandoned her.
Her mom, Summer Rose, continued loving a child like herself even though she wasn't her biological child. Her mom didn't have to love her like she did with Ruby, she could've been the worst parent to her and the best parent to Ruby, but she treated her just like she was her own.
That thought was always at the forefront of Yang's mind after what she overheard from her Dad and Uncle's conversation.
But she always pushed the thought back because she had something else more important to figure out, and that's where should she begin to find her current biological mother, Raven Branwen.
"You always say that she's never coming back, but what makes you so sure?" Ruby yelled quietly as her eyes squinted, "What if she's just taking a little longer than usual, or talking to her friends out there, you know how she is whenever she starts talking with them, she takes forever." Ruby tried to come up with excuses.
"Ruby… if she was she'd be home by now." Yang said with a stern voice. She wasn't angry at her sister, she was angry that Ruby believed their mother was still alive. If her sister didn't learn to accept their mother is dead then she would just continue to hurt more and she didn't like the thought of that.
But it also scared her. She always protected Ruby from harm's way, but what if she's unable to protect Ruby from harm's way? She's able to beat up anything that hurts Ruby like a big bully, a lone grimm, a wild animal, or her dad's teasing. But what if that harm comes from the inside, how would she protect Ruby from that pain?
"S-she could be talking to a lot of friends on the way home!" Ruby yelled.
Yang's eyes widened as her brows furrowed a second after, "You don't know that!" Yang yelled back.
"Yea, so what! You don't know if mom's dead or not either!" Ruby countered.
"Yes, I do!" Yang shouted as her eyes began to blur. Yang tried to push the tears back down, but it was hard to push the tears down, hard to accept that her mother was gone forever, hard to accept how this family was crumbling right in front of her eyes.
"No you don't!" Ruby wailed as her eyes began to water as well.
"Yes I do, I heard it when dad and unc-" Yang wasn't able to finish her sentence, it wasn't because she didn't want to but because her dad came barging in through the door.
"Girls!" He shouted.
Her dad wasn't in the best shape, his balance was off, and when he came bursting into the room he almost tripped over himself but somehow managed to gain his balance back.
He didn't smell good either, some days he smelled of liquor and on other days booze. She hated the sight of her dad drinking while she and Ruby sat in their rooms doing nothing but hoping that their mother was alright.
She didn't understand why their dad when in their time of need, couldn't help them, reassure them, lessen the pain in her and Ruby's heart. He acted so selfishly, he wasn't the only one who was in pain.
"What'dz~ I say ah-bout sz-leeping late!" He yelled as his speech slurred.
Ruby jolted at the sudden rise of volume in his voice and quickly jumped in bed, peeking over her blanket as she stared at Dad.
Yang didn't blame Ruby… before their dad became an alcoholic he was always strict about them going to sleep late, but he never yelled at them, he never raised his voice at them, instead, he would always shake his head and then tuck them in and read them bedtime stories.
But now, he doesn't have the time for bedtime stories nor does he have the time for her and Ruby. All he could ever do was indulge himself in booze and liquor as he sat on the couch and did nothing to better the family. It's gotten to the point where Yang had to start cooking for herself and her sister to get by.
Yang couldn't imagine the next few weeks, it wasn't even the second week, but the first week and it already has gotten bad enough to the point where she has to think of what to do if their dad starts hitting them.
But no matter how hard she tried to think of a plan, she couldn't see their dad hitting them, hell, it brought a squeezing sensation in her heart just thinking of that.
But Yang believed herself to be her sister's protector and she would do anything to protect her from harm's way.
"S-sorry, I'm going to sleep right now." Ruby squeaked under her blanket.
"Yea~ you'z better." He replied. But before he could make it out the door he collapsed.
"Dad!" Ruby shouted as she threw the blanket off herself and ran to check on him.
Yang did the same thing. Sure, she hated how her dad is right now but she can't stand the thought of losing him either.
As they both closed in on him, they heard a faint sound.
snore
Yang sighed in annoyance, "He's just sleeping." Yang rolled her eyes.
The booze probably got to him, Yang thought.
"Hnngg~" Ruby tried lifting her dad off the floor, but because she's half the size of her dad and he's quadrupled their weight, she couldn't.
"Yang, a little help please?" Ruby pleaded.
Yang was planning to leave their dad on the floor, not because she disliked the thought of helping him but because she wanted her dad to wake up with aching bones and joints. She thought it would be a good form of punishment for his behavior, the hangover an added bonus to his punishment.
Yang could just feel the smirk forming on her face.
"Yang~" Ruby pleaded.
"Fine." Yang grumbled as she expelled a huff before helping her sister.
Have you ever gotten that feeling of nostalgia, it doesn't have to be a specific thing, it can be many things. Like the smell of food being prepared by someone dear to you like your mom or dad, or it could be a playground that feels oddly familiar to your childhood playgrounds.
It could be anything, object, place, food, but a feeling that's unforgettable is a person close to you that died, be it friends, family, cousins, pets, etc. Sometimes you get the feeling they're there, but every time you turn your neck to check, they're not.
Yang is feeling nostalgic. Her nose twitched as the sweet smell of chocolate and baked dough infiltrated her nose. It reminded her of someone's cooking, someone close, and that's when it clicked. Her eyes snapped open as her heart tightened.
She took another sniff and she was sure, and she was sure that this smell was her mother's cooking, specifically the chocolate chip cookies she made. This brought a feeling of butterflies in her stomach as her chest tightened.
Yang was glad to smell her mother's cooking again, she was glad to know her mother was back. But Yang wasn't glad that she said all those things to Ruby last night.
Yang wanted to take back all those words and shove them back in the trash, she regretted all the things she said about their mom last night, so much so that she didn't want to look Ruby in the eyes but she had a feeling she would see Ruby if she went downstairs to check if her mother really is there.
Yang slid off her bed, her bare feet making contact with the cold wooden floor.
She grumbled talking about how she had forgotten to close the window last night. It wasn't her fault though, there was always a raven that would stand by the window, watching her and Ruby fall asleep, but she felt like the raven was staring at her most of the time, it made her uncomfortable but oddly comfortable at the same time. It was a feeling Yang couldn't understand and she hated that.
But soon she grew comfortable, she tried to feed the raven a couple of times but it never bothered to eat the food she gave it, not even bread or bird seeds which she found annoying. Even more annoying was that the raven wouldn't allow her to pet it and every time she tried to pet the raven, it would peck at her fingers.
The first time the raven did that caused Yang to tear up a bit and all she received were squawks from the raven like it was laughing at her. That's when she decided to ignore the raven up until last night.
Yang found the raven comforting now, but she was bummed out that the raven only comes to say hello around at night. She entertained the thought of training the raven to be like some sort of pet parrot like the pirates in the stories she's read but dismissed it when the raven pecked at her head a couple of times after she tried to make it roll over like how some people trained their pet dog to do.
But if she did get a pet raven she would have to somehow convince her dad to let her keep it and to hope that Zwei and the raven get along.
Before Yang knew it, she already found herself walking downstairs. It was weird, she didn't remember leaving the room, but she dismissed it, thinking it was her zoning out as she recalled her past memories.
Yang looked around the living room, but she didn't find anyone, not even Zwei who always slept on his little dog bed. She started wondering if she was imagining things but before she could head back upstairs she heard rustling noises and a familiar laugh coming from the kitchen.
… The laugh came from her mother, it couldn't be anything else, she thought.
Adrenaline filled her entire body, she couldn't believe it, but it was reality. Her legs kicked up as she ran to the kitchen. She wouldn't separate from her mother ever again, she wanted to spend every single minute of the day with her and the following day, the following week, the following months, and the following years.
She missed her, Yang thought she didn't but at the same time she knew she did. She missed her mom a lot, she missed her because she held this family together. Just the thought of her family finally piecing itself back together made her cheeks red and tears swell in her eyes in joy.
For once this week she felt so, good.
The kitchen became quiet. Yang wiped away at the forming tears blocking her vision as her eyes fell on her mom, Summer Rose.
"M-mom..?" Yang's voice trembled.
Summer Rose's eyes brightened at the sight of Yang, she sent Yang a sweet smile like she always did when she saw them.
"I chold chu scheed be fwine." Ruby said while stuffing her face full of cookies.
"Y-yea, I guess you were right-" Yang said as her eyes failed to meet her sister's.
Suddenly arms found themselves wrapped around Yang's wait. Yang yelped in surprise as she found herself in her mom's bare hug.
"H-hey!" Yang complained but deep down she needed it, a lot.
"What, I can't hug my daughter?" Summer teased.
"N-no, it's just… where have you been all this time?" Yang asked.
"Ah, it's about that. Well, first, what do you have to say to your sister?" Summer locked eyes with Yang. Yang didn't hate it, it felt comforting to see her eyes again, it made her annoyed but right now it felt like a blessing.
"W-what?" Yang looked taken aback.
"What you said last night, duh." Summer replied.
"She told you?" Yang said with a bit of anger.
"Of course she did, she tells me everything, I thought you knew that already." Summer chuckled as she released Yang from her monster hug.
"F-fine." Yang grumbled as she stared at the ground before she found the courage to look at her sister's eyes.
"I'm sorry for saying the things I said last night." Yang said really quietly.
"What was that, I couldn't hear you." Ruby said as she cupped a hand over her ear to hear Yang better. She was obviously messing with Yang.
"I said, I'm sorry for saying the things I said last night." Yang said a little louder.
"What? Sorry, I couldn't hear you~" Ruby teased again.
Yang's hands balled, she thought she was going to blow a nerve from her sister's teasing, "I said, I'm sorry for saying the things I said last night! Happy!?" Yang yelled.
"Yep," Ruby said, "But you don't need to be sorry."
"What?" Yang looked confused.
"I said, you don't need to be sorry." Ruby said. But before Yang could say anything, everything became dark, "Because you were right, mom is dead…" Ruby's voice sounded on the verge of crying.
Yang jolted up, and sweat rolled down her body as her breathing increased to a rapid pace. That's when she realized.
It was all a dream.
For the first time in a while, she cried herself to sleep, hoping she would be back in the dream when she fell asleep.
Crunch
Wolves howled, the broken moon being all they had as their replacement. The forest is their home, along with other plethora of animals like squirrels, birds, bears, mice, wild cats, and dogs. But there was another resident, a human that every animal was fond of, too strong for grimm to kill.
He's kind to every animal, carnivorous or herbivorous, they're even able to speak to him and he's able to understand them and because of this, every animal in the forest is united.
But… one thing every animal knew, he never truly smiled, behind his facade was a face of longing, but not a single animal knew why, they weren't good with complex emotions, only the basics.
A man with platinum-blonde hair and sky-blue eyes wore nothing but a fig leaf to cover his crotch. He was extraordinarily gorgeous, his muscles defined.
He sat against a stump, staring at the broken moon along with the animals, "Ah… Somewhere out there… a child is crying… it's alright… don't cry… you're not alone."
He held an apple in his hand, staring at his reflection.
Crunch
"So sour..."
