CHAPTER ONE
Sam's POV
Today I was returning to the SRU since my youngest daughter was born. Walking into the kitchen, I smiled seeing my wife- Claire, and two daughters- Emily and Sage.
"Morning." I said and kissed her on the cheek as I walked by her. "Morning girls." I walked around the island corner and gave them both a kiss on their head as they ate breakfast. Claire picked up her plate and brought it over to the sink.
"Sam, you're still bringing Emily to school this morning, right?" She asked, then turned around. "On your way to work? Remember I'm taking Sage to her dentist appointment this morning."
"Yes. I remember." I replied nodding my head. I glanced at the time on the wall clock above the oven. "Which means we need to leave soon." I looked at my 10-year-old daughter. "Emily, why don't you go grab your school bag." She nodded and jumped down from the stool.
"Sam." My wife spoke, grabbing my attention. My head turned towards her as she walked over to me. She slipped her hands into mine. Her eyes flickered up to mine. A look of worry in them.
"Don't worry." I told her before she could say anything. "I'll be fine. I promise." She sighed, her eyes flickering to the floor.
"I know you will." She replied. "Just please be careful."
I smiled at her. "Claire, these guys are family. They won't let anything happen to me." Her eyes flickered up at me as I added. "Hell, Ed's son- Clark just babysat the girls two nights ago."
"I'm just worried about you." She admitted. I pulled her closer, giving her a hug.
"I'll be okay." I whispered, then kissed her goodbye. "I'll see you tonight, okay?" My eyes flickered up to mine. "I love you, Claire."
"I love you too, Sam." She replied. Emily walked back into the kitchen with her school stuff. I grabbed my bag off the dining table as Emily ran to the front door. "Stay safe." My wife whispered as I walked out the door…
"Hey, look who's back." Ed grinned as I walked into the SRU center. I smiled back at him as our boss- Greg Parker came out to the briefing room.
"Sam." He said with a smile. "It's great to have you back." He added, grabbing my hand and shaking it. Sam smiled back at him as the rest of Team One walked in- Spike, Jules, and Leah. "You remember Leah, right?" Greg asked. "I think she started a week before you left." I nodded, remembering Leah and gave her a wave. She smiled back, returning a wave back. Jules walked over and wrapped her arms around my neck, giving me a huge hug.
"Glad you're back, Sam." She whispered in my ear. We stood there for a moment, before I stepped back and looked at her. Jules held a special place in my heart. Not only was she the first teammate I met when I joined all those years ago, but she had become one of Claire's closest friends. "Hey, guess who you're riding with?" She teased, then slammed my arm. I get out a chuckle, shaking my head. We did make a pretty good team.
"We're patrolling today?" I asked, glancing up at our boss as she turned her body as well. Greg nodded, then turned to the other members of Team One.
"Spike and Leah, you two are riding together. Ed, you and me." Greg said. The team nodded, understanding their duties. "Let's go keep the peace." Greg added before all of us headed down to the police cruisers.
