A/N: Happy October, everyone. Hope you're enjoying spooky season.
Slowly opening her eyes, Leah blinked in confusion as she sat up and looked around as she tried to move her arms… only to see her arms in soft restraints.
"Damn it to hell! I swear, Hank, if you had me committed-" Leah responded in a growl as she pulled at the restraints, trying to get free.
She stopped abruptly as she heard footsteps and her blue eyes were wide with fear.
"Hello? Someone there?" Leah called out before the door opened and the tall dark haired brown eyed man in white scrubs went wide eyed as he saw her.
"I don't know why you're here or who you are but from the lack of a patient chart near the door, you don't belong here." The man explained before he walked to the nurses desk.
He returned to the room with a key to the restraints and unlocked them from Leah's wrists, helping her stand up.
The man was almost the mirror image of Connor but lacked an LED… and she knew that Connor hadn't removed his yet.
"I can't thank you enough for getting me out of there." Leah responded after they walked into the hallway and he guided her to the nearest elevator.
"I'm just glad you're okay… all of the other patients and psychiatric staff seemingly disappeared yesterday." The man explained as they waited for the elevator doors to open.
No one else was around the psychiatric ward, which Leah found completely unnerving as she stayed close to who she assumed was a human version of Connor… and the possibility of multiple disappearances of both patients and staff was unlikely to her.
"People just don't disappear..." Leah responded as they got into the elevator, Leah pressing the button to close them and pressing the ground floor button, the doors opening again but in the ER.
It was busier than it should've been... and the screaming and crying became very disorienting to Leah, who struggled to breathe until the man's right hand rubbed up and down her back.
"What... day is it?" Leah questioned once she regained control of her voice.
"November 1st 2020." The man explained before Leah heard frantic yelling and turned to one of the triage rooms.
Confusion gave way to disbelief as she saw a much younger Steven and Hank… and then heard a monitor blaring.
Confusion gave way to disbelief as she saw a much younger Steven and Hank… and then heard a monitor blaring.
Across the hallway in a triage room was an unresponsive Elena with doctors and nurses trying to revive her and Leah couldn't stop the tears from falling.
"Mom..." Leah spoke quietly as she heard "Call it." and "Time of death, 11:34am." and heard Steven sobbing as Hank managed to restrain him.
"I'm sorry, little brother… I'm so sorry." Hank whispered.
"Leah was taken upstairs for a CT scan… how am I gonna tell my daughter that her mother is gone?" Steven responded through his sobs as Hank hugged him.
Leah heard a loud ringing in her ears and faintly heard "Now you remember…" before a white light surrounded her…
Hearing Leah tossing and turning and crying, Connor set his work laptop down as his LED turned red and Sumo's eyes slowly opened and he whined.
Connor stood up and ran down the hallway and into their room with the aging Saint Bernard following after him.
Connor sat down and gently gripped onto Leah's left wrist with his right hand, his left hand resting on her sternum and feeling her heart beating rapidly under his hand as Leah's eyes snapped open.
"It's okay, you're okay, Sweetheart. It was just a bad dream." Connor whispered as Leah's racing heart slowly calmed down and Connor sat down after letting go of Leah's left wrist as Sumo rested his head on the bed and whined.
Reaching her shaking right hand out, Leah petted Sumo… and Connor sat down, reaching his right hand out.
Silently, Leah placed her left hand in his right hand and their fingers interlocked as the synthetic skin of Connor's right hand peeled back and his LED turned yellow in concern… and she rested her head on his right shoulder, Connor resting his head on top of hers.
"It was not a bad dream… I was remembering the day of the multi vehicle pileup in Novi. Me and my parents were on our way from there to Detroit to see Hank. I woke up in the car seat that was in the backseat of the Ford F-250 and my mom… she turned around to ask if I was getting hungry. The next thing I remember clearly is the Greyhound bus slamming into the truck and screaming. But every time, it replays differently in my mind." Leah explained once she managed to regain control of her voice.
"Take your time. I'm not going anywhere." Connor responded reassuringly.
"This time, I woke up in the psychiatric ward in restraints… and the door opened and you were there. You unlocked them before we walked to the elevator, no one else was around and we didn't see anyone until we got to the ER. I saw them… my parents and the other victims of the multi vehicle accident… some of them were little kids screaming in pain as their parents tried to comfort them. I asked what day it was though I… I already knew. November 1st 2020. I heard him screaming for her as her monitor went crazy, doctors and nurses were trying their damndest to bring her back… but she was already gone." Leah explained, Connor brushing her tears away.
Leah was grateful at that moment that Hank was on a stakeout with Chris, Tina and Gavin because his memories of that day were ones that would stick with him for the rest of his life.
"That had to have been a hell of a shock, seeing…" Connor started to say but he trailed off as they looked at each other.
"Oh, I wanted to scream and yell at him. For years, I wondered how he could abandon his only child… seeing my mom so clearly, seeing how much I look like her…" Leah responded before they let go of each other's hands and Connor held her.
"Him raising you would've left him with a constant reminder of her. Doesn't make it right at all, him leaving you behind." Connor explained, kissing Leah's forehead.
In an assisted care facility, two blue eyes opened slowly and a redheaded woman opened her mouth for the first time in almost 20 years as she was alone in a darkened room with the moon shining through the window.
"Leah..."
