"I'm not wasting my love, my life, or my time on you anymore Marc." She told him over the phone. It was silent over the phone and secretly, Danica hoped he would beg, plead even just to keep her.

"Things have just been really busy and complicated with work right now Dani." Marc told her tiredly over the phone as she held it against her ear with her left hand, the other crossed across her chest.

"And that's why I haven't seen you in two months?" Danica asked, trying hard not to let her voice waver, feeling hurt wash over her.

"Yes, it is."

"And you can't take a day, even to see me?" More silence then, and Danica knew she wouldn't get the answer she hoped for.

"Look Danica, I don't know what you want me to say." It was at that moment that it felt like Danica's heart was breaking.

"Nothing, Marc. I was still holding on to some hope for a change to come, but I can clearly see where your priorities lie. I'm clearly not enough and I won't be letting life pass me by anymore waiting on you, even if it's on my own." With that she hung up, hearing him trying to say something but being cut off. Tears silently ran down Danica's face as she thought about what she had to do.

Danica decided that the best option was to block his number because otherwise she would just be hurting herself more if he reached out. Looking around her apartment with a dejected sigh, Danica sat in her recliner with her knees tucked to her chest, pajama bottoms on and a tank top. As she blankly stared at her phone screen, trying to let what she had effectively done sink in, a message notification popped up on her screen from an old friend.

Foggy Nelson: Hey, Dani! How goes it?

Danica stared at the text for a moment before clicking on it and opening the chat, typing her response without thinking.

Danica: Hey! I haven't heard from you in awhile. I'm okay, just lonely here in the UK. How are you, Foggy?

It wasn't long before he had texted back and she sat, reading it.

Foggy Nelson: I'm good! Busy, I opened a law firm up with a friend so we're always on the go. Sorry to hear you're lonely, ever thought about moving back? I know Hell's Kitchen isn't the greatest but you could definitely do something with that Art degree here, the Rubin Museum has an opening for a curator position plus I know an apartment that just went back on the market. Food for thought, ya know?

Danica thought for a moment and looked around her apartment. What is keeping me here now anyways? My lease is up this month, and I'm going nowhere with that Illustrator gig. With a renewed sense of freedom, she internally decided.

Danica: Could you give me the website for the application for the apartment?

She texted him back hoping he would quickly text her back, feeling excitement at the thought of going home, changing the pace for the first time in years.

Foggy Nelson: Woah! Really?? Listen, I didn't really think you'd go for that. Actually you know, let me just stop talking and send you the link. I'll put in a good word for you, my friend lives in the same complex.

With that, Foggy sent her the link and she filled out the application, submitting her pay stubs, and her ID without a second thought. "What am I doing?" She asked to herself but couldn't come up with an answer.

Danica: I went ahead and filled it out :)

Foggy Nelson: Awesome!! Hey I'm actually really excited, let me know when you get back to the city and we'll meet up to have coffee or something. I can guarantee you'll get the apartment. Do you need me to send you the link for the application at the Rubin Museum?

Danica smiled at her screen at Foggy's helpfulness and enthusiasm.

Danica: Thank you but I actually already pulled it up, wanted to get a jump on it before anyone else.

Foggy Nelson: So life must really suck in London then, huh?? Those Brit's with their weird food not doing it for you? And what about that boyfriend of yours?

Danica: Haha Yeah, not really. My jobs been at a dead end for awhile now, and I just don't get any fulfillment out of it. And uh, that's not a thing anymore. I wasn't worth his time I guess after two years

Foggy Nelson: Well I say fuck him! You're great Dani, if he couldn't see it then he was crazy.

Danica: Why thank you Foggy, you know just what to say to make a girl feel better. What about you? Any prospects?

Foggy Nelson: There's maybe a girl. She's really sweet, but she's our assistant. We went out on a date though not so long ago, so maybe?

Danica: that's awesome!! I hope things work out for you. I heard that you guys put away Wilson Fisk awhile ago btw. That true? I don't watch tv or really keep up on the news but Marci told me and sometimes I take what she says with a grain of salt lol

Foggy Nelson: It actually is true, believe it or not. I'm sure your mind is blown, right? We had another big case but it uh.. didn't go so great. But now we're back on track, have a lot of clients coming in. Some with money, some with bread but you know, never really did it for the money in the first place. To help people is the reason for all of this.

Danica: That sounds just like the Foggy I know. I'm really glad things are going good for you. How's the fam?

Foggy Nelson: Oh you know, mom just begging me to be a butcher once a month still like always They're good though, just as weird as ever. What about you? How's your dad?

Danica thought about what to say for a moment about her Dad. Life had been hard since Mom had passed of cancer and both hers and his life had been drastically changed, life not being quite the same without her, things not feeling as bright as they once had.

Danica: He's.. struggling. I was thinking about coming back for a little bit to be near him before you brought up coming back actually, so it was a really funny coincidence you suggested it to me. Since Mom died, he hasn't been the same. I worry about him a lot and I think he'd like me coming home.

Foggy Nelson: Oh yeah, I forgot about that. :( You came home for the funeral but I wasn't able to go then, I'm sorry.

Danica: No, don't be. It's okay, I know that you had a lot going on, I remember you texting me about some stuff.

Danica finally stopped texting for a moment and looked at the time only to see it was almost 3:30 AM. Blinking in surprise, she rubbed her eyes, suddenly feeling tired.

Danica: We've been texting for three hours and I didn't even realize it. It's about 3:30 AM here now so I think I'm gonna head to bed. I'll text you later in the week and let you know what's going on, sound good?

Foggy Nelson: Oh wow, I forgot about the time zone difference. Yeah, just let me know! Ttyl Dani, love ya.

Danica: Love ya too!

With that, Danica put her phone down and sat in her own thoughts for a moment, her brain still trying to process what all she had just done tonight. All the worry, stress, and depression had just lifted when she didn't have anything else to tie her to London. It's better like this. She thought to herself as she headed to her bedroom, turning off her light and crawling under the covers.

Closing her heavy feeling eyes, Danica fell fast asleep not realizing that she had a watcher in her window. That night, she had various dreams about Marc and when she woke up in the morning, she felt anxious. Danica didn't even bother going in to work, calling in later then she should have but she just didn't have it in her to care much about it. Then she went back to sleep until around 12, finally opening her eyes and staring up at her ceiling.

"This sucks." Danica muttered to herself, moving her long, curly honey colored hair out of her face. Sweeping her arm, she found her phone in the bed and grabbed it, surprised when the first thing she saw was an e-mail from the complex in hell kitchen. Reading over the e-mail, a grin spread across her face. Without thinking, she called her Dad.

"Hello darling, you're calling me at an odd time of the day." Her father said the moment he answered.

"Yes, I know but I just couldn't wait to call." Danica told him excitedly. "Papa, how would you feel about me moving back home?" She asked as he laughed.

"What kind of question is that? I'd jump over the moon! Twice, just because once simply isn't enough." Danica smiled softly at his silliness, her heart filling up in her chest with feelings of missing him.

"Well I guess you better start jumping." Danica's smile turned into a grin as she heard him laughing like a mad man then what sounded like banging on the floor then she heard him mutter a quiet "Oh no."

"I scared the cat and he pissed the floor, oh darn. That's fine, I'll clean it up in a moment."

"Sorry Papa, I didn't mean to make you scare your cat." Danica grimaced at the thought of cat pee on the floor.

"Don't worry about that, he's skittish and I know that. Just got too excited for a moment. But- when will you be here? When should I expect you?"

"I guess as fast as I can figure out how to get all my belongings on a plane out to NewYork. I might have to take a ship?"

"Oh gosh, that sounds rather complicated. Doesn't it? Why don't you leave behind your furniture and I'll buy you new furniture when you get here? I can imagine it would be a lot of time, money, and stress to figure out how to get all of that overseas."

Danica thought for a moment. "Are you sure? I don't want you to have to buy me all new furniture."

"I wouldn't offer if I wasn't sure. It's completely fine Danica, and I'm sure we could thrift some classy furniture like you normally do for pretty cheap."

Danica grinned then. "Well then I guess I better start packing my clothes then. I have to make some calls to my landlord, and I'll let you know when I'll be heading home. Do you want to pick me up from the airport when I come home?" Danica asked him as she turned on the shower, her shoulder holding her phone to her ear as she did.

"You ask such silly questions. I wouldn't have it any other way, now get in that shower I hear running and make your calls. Oh wait, I forgot to ask you important things." He muttered the last part and she could imagine his hand holding his chin in thought.

"Like what, Papa?" She asked him as he hummed.

"Well in my excitement I forgot to ask you why you're coming back home. Rather silly of me not to. Is everything okay? How does Marc feel about this?" Danica sighed as he asked. "Oh you sighed, that's not a good sign."

"Well, Marc and I are no longer together. I had been thinking about coming home before this, then we split, and I had a friend reach out who told me about an apartment for rent and a job in my area of expertise so I decided to jump on it. I found out this morning that I got the apartment and I'm under consideration for the job." Danica explained and the entire time she did she heard 'Uh-huh.'

"I never liked Marc to begin with. He left you alone far too often with no reasonable explanation." He told her then immediately back tracked. "Sorry, I shouldn't have said that, you're going through a break up with someone you loved and I'm being insensitive."

"No Papa, it's fine. You're right about that."

"If I'm right about this, I wonder else I might be right about? The possibilities are endless." He said as she laughed.

"Okay nutball, I'm going to shower. I'll speak to you soon. I love you."

"I love you too, Danica the brave." As he said this, Danica smiled softly to herself. It had always been something that he had called her. As they hung up, Danica got into the shower and moaned in relief at the hot water that scalded her skin. Quickly getting clean and hopping out, she grabbed her phone with a towel around her to call her landlord.

Hello?" An older lady, Janette answered the phone.

"Janette! Hi, I was wondering if you had a second to talk?" Danica asked, pulling out clothes to get dressed.

"Of course, what did you need to speak with me about?" She asked curiously.

"I wanted to let you know I unfortunately won't be renewing my lease. I know previously we had discussed me renewing but I've had some things come up and some changes happen that have swayed me to move back home." She explained and heard a small sigh.

"Well that is too bad, you always were a fine tenant. When will you be leaving?" She asked as Danica looked at the time.

"Erm- possibly by the end of today. I know it's sudden but I'd like to go ahead and get going. I was going to see if you'd like all of my furniture, you could keep the apartment fully furnished for the next occupants, some places are doing that now."

"Oh goodness, are you sure? I can't imagine that furniture was cheap."

"I'm very sure, it's the least I can do for dropping this on you so suddenly. I also went ahead and paid you last months rent, it should be in your account."

"Well you shouldn't have! You're not even going to be here the rest of the month, I feel like I'm robbing you blind here. I get all your furniture and last months rent and you won't even be in the apartment. Please, let me send it back."

"No can do Janette, just return the kindness to someone else. But I really have to go, thank you for everything."

"Of course, keep in touch please if you would. I'll miss you Danica, I hope things go your way."

"You're so sweet, thank you Janette. I definitely will, have a good day." And with that she hung up. "Step one, done." Danica muttered as she started pulling out all of her clothes from her dressers and started packing them in various suitcases. After the 5th suitcase was packed, she looked around to see if there was anything else she needed to grab.

Her eyes suddenly stopped at a necklace that Marc had given her, sitting on top of her dresser. Without thinking, she grabbed it and held it in her hand, close to her chest. After a minute, Danica pocketed it before continuing.

It wasn't long before she was completely done and called a taxi to come pick her up. When it stopped, the taxi driver got out and helped her with all of her stuff then off they went. As she sat in the back of the cab, she watched the city go by in relief and sadness. I wonder if Marc will try to come to my apartment. Danica thought for a moment before shaking her head at her thoughts before checking her phone when it vibrated.

Foggy Nelson: How goes it?

Danica smiled as she started texting him back.

Danica: Wanna get that coffee tomorrow? My flight is 8 hours so I won't be there until.. 4 PM? I believe. It's 2 here now, what time is it there?

Foggy Nelson: Omg are you serious?? I can't believe you got approved for the apartment so fast, I just told my buddy last night. Nice to know he pulled some strings. It's 8 AM here now. Are you excited?!

Danica: I really am actually, it's going to be surreal to be back for good after so long. I basically just up and left, it's been relieving. My Dad persuaded me to leave my furniture behind because it'd be a hassle to try to figure out how to get it all over here so I just got out of there.

Foggy Nelson: That's so cool! Man, I can't wait. I'm sure you're gonna be kind of tired and jet lagged when you get here so I'll let you settle in, and then tomorrow we go have coffee. This is gonna be great

Danica: Yes it will I have to go for now though, I'm approaching the airport. My flight is in like 30 minutes so I have to hustle. See you soon.

With that, Danica put her phone in her pocket as the cab stopped. Quickly she jumped out and started getting her suitcases and the man also got out and helped her.

"Do you want me to help you bring all your luggage to the terminal? It's a lot and you'd have to make two trips otherwise." The cabby offered as she smiled gratefully.

"Would you? I'd appreciate it, I'll give you the biggest tip ever." The cabby shook his head then.

"I don't need it, just wanna help." He told her as he grabbed two of her suitcases and slung her duffle bag over his shoulder. As they rolled the suitcases together, he made small talk. "So where are you going?" He asked as they walked together.

"I'm going to NY. That's my home and I'm returning. As beautiful it is in London, my time here has come to an end." She told him as he nodded.

"Well I hope you have a nice time going home." He let her know and then they stopped as they arrived to the terminal. "Here's your stop, have a nice flight." He let her know as he set her luggage and duffel bag down.

"And here is your tip." Danica pulled out 39 pounds and handed it to him. The amount made him blink in surprise but he slowly pocketed it.

"Thank you, this will help me a lot." He told her with a brief smile before turning around and walking away. Once she was at her terminal, she got checked in and started waiting in line to get on her flight. Eventually she did so and as she sat down finally, a small sigh left her lips. As she sat on the plane, Danica decided she would surprise her Dad and just show up at his place. He always loved surprises.

It felt as if a weight had lifted off her chest suddenly. Life had drastically changed in 24 hours but instead of feeling scared, she felt like she had just stepped into something like fate. Everything happens for a reason, right? She thought to herself, looking out of her window for a moment before her head leaned back into her seat, closing her eyes as she did. For some reason, Danica felt tired still.

As the plane took off, it actually lulled Danica into a sense of coziness, as if she was sleeping in the back seat of her parents car when she was younger. Her dreams this time were ones of New York, taking her to a time when she was a teenager, running around the city.

Soon a light shake on her shoulder had her opening her eyes groggily to see a flight attendant standing next to her with a pleasant smile. "Hi ma'am I just wanted to let you know that we're going to be landing soon."

"Oh thank you, I appreciate it." Danica let her know as she cleared her throat before sitting up straighter as the flight attendant walked away. As Danica pulled out her phone, sure enough her phone had switched timezones and it now said 4:03 PM. When the plane landed, she pulled two of her suitcases from the top then got off and waited at the luggage for the rest of her things. Once she had gotten all of it together, Danica called for a cab.

Once they parked, she slowly threw all her luggage in the trunk and got into the back, giving him the address. "Hells kitchen, hm?" He asked as she nodded.

"Yep, I grew up in Hell's Kitchen so only fitting to go back." The cabby nodded his head as he drove.

"I grew up in Harlem, was there when the Hulk ripped it apart. Now a days that guy is considered a hero. It's crazy." He told her as she shrugged.

"I don't think he could control it for a long time. It would suck to have something inside of you that came out every time you were angry, ya know?" Danica explained as he hummed in response.

"Yeah, I guess so. I'd probably have messed up Harlem too if that was the case." As he said this, he stopped in front of her new apartment and Danica glanced up to it.

"Interesting." Danica muttered as she handed him the money, then got out and grabbed her suitcases from the back. Once she closed the trunk, the cabby immediately sped off and Danica blinked. "Well damn, I was hoping I could pay him to help me take some of these up." She muttered as she grabbed her duffel bag, slipping it over her shoulder then grabbing multiple handles in one hand and two more in another before going. As she opened the door and let it lean against her back, Danica cursed as she saw stairs.

Slowly but surely she dragged her suitcases up the stairs and half way through lugging them up she heard a voice. "Need some help with that?" Danica looked down and her voice got stuck in her throat as she saw an extremely attractive man with a suit on, red glasses, stubble, dark brown hair, and a walking stick looking in her general direction. Danica just stared at him for a moment, her heart beating hard in her chest. "Hello?" He asked as finally she snapped out of it.

"Oh uhm if that's okay, you don't have to." The man with the red glasses gave her an easy smile.

"I want to, how many suitcases do you have?" He asked as he made his way up the stairs to her. She furrowed her eyebrows at the odd question but answered anyways.

"I have five and a duffel bag, it's a lot I know." Danica laughed awkwardly as he smiled again at her laugh.

"You don't have any one to help you? Not a boyfriend?" He asked her as she shook her head. "Did you shake your head?" He asked as she blinked. Finally Danica put the piece together, he was blind!

"You're blind and I'm an idiot. I didn't even realize, of course that's why you have a walking stick and why you asked me how many suitcases I had. I don't know where my common sense went, it's just been such a long day." Danica was fighting the urge to disappear from embarrassment but the man didn't even seem phased, instead laughing.

"You're okay, most people don't realize unless I have my walking stick out and act stereotypically blind." He told her as she nodded but quickly remembered.

"That makes sense. But how'd you know I needed help with my suitcases?" She asked as he smirked.

"I've been standing at the bottom of the staircase listening to you struggle with them for around ten minutes now, and I put two and two together." He explained. "No boyfriend then?" He asked as she chuckled with a sigh.

"Oh no, not anymore anyways." She told him as he cocked an eyebrow, grabbing three of the suitcase handles out of her hand as he did.

"Oh? Sounds like their is a story there." He said as they both slowly took all of her things up the staircase.

"Eh, nothing too exciting. He hadn't come around in two months and vaguely gave me the explanation of a job. He had done that a lot and finally I asked him if he couldn't even take a day to see me. Asked me what I wanted from him and that was the end of that." Danica explained as he shook his head.

"How long had you guys been together?" He asked as Danica frowned to herself in sadness.

"Two years. Guess I wasn't worth it." She muttered as they reached the top of the staircase.

"I bet you're worth it." The man told her as they got up to the top of the stairs. Danica looked at him and his face was completely serious. Once again, her heart did a backflip and she tried to play it cool.

"Well thank you. For both, helping me with my suitcases and being nice."

"It's absolutely no problem. I'll take them to your apartment too actually. Where are you heading?" He asked.

"I'm heading to apartment B. I just moved in today, my friend has a friend who lives here and was able to get me approved." She told him as he grinned then.

"You're Danica?" He asked as she nodded as she put together the pieces.

"You're the friend, huh?" She asked as he nodded then stuck out his hand.

"Matt. Matt Murdock." He introduced himself and she grabbed it, shaking his big, warm calloused hand.

"Danica Kravitz. Thanks for helping me get the apartment too." Danica thanked him again as she slowly let his hand go but not before he gave her fingers a small squeeze as they slipped out of his hand.

"It's no problem, any friend of Foggy's is a friend of mine and I'd do anything for a friend." Matt smiled at her and she blushed then.

"Well what a nice new friend I have." Danica cheekily told him as he tilted his head with a smirk.

"Oh you know, I try to be at least. Now let's get these to your new apartment. Is this all you have?"

"Yeah, I'll probably have to go to the store and get a inflatable mattress tonight because I left all of my furniture behind."

"Yeah, Foggy mentioned something like that. I was surprised to hear you were going to be here today actually. I take it you wanted to get away from anything that made you think of your ex as fast as possible?" He asked her.

"Pretty much." Danica sighed as they got to the door. "I was at a dead end in the UK anyways. I didn't really have many friends besides the ones I worked with, and nothing was really tying me down anymore."

"That makes sense. Well, I'm glad your back home. And it's really nice to meet you, Danica." Matt turned to her apartment door then. "This is your new place. And that," he pointed to the door about 8 feet away. "Is mine. If you'd like, we can put your suitcases inside and then go over to my place and have some celebratory drinks."

Danica thought about it for a moment before nodding then groaning with a scrunch of her nose. "I nodded again, sorry. But yeah, that actually sounds like it'd be fun." She told him with a smile.

"Great!"
