Marshmallow was a simple creature.
Complex? Sure, he had so much magic, snow and ice in his body that not even the most intelligent being on the planet would fully understand it. Doing things he was not supposed to do (like taste, breathe...) only increased his impossibility of existence.
Scary? Oh boy, yes. By just raising one of his fingers and growling a bit, Marshmallow made the bravest soldier look like a scared little boy, sending them back the way they came, never to be seen near his territory again.
Cranky? Not entirely, but many seemed to believe so when they were not received with a warm welcome as if they were lifelong friends. Marshmallow had priorities, he was sweet and kind to those he loved, and that didn't include everyone, who apparently took this as an excuse to say that he was easy to get angry (he was easy to get angry, but that's not the point)
Marshmallow was this and much more, but that didn't take away from the fact that he was someone simple.
He liked the routine, the protective isolation that the mountains provided, he liked to play with his little brothers then sleep and play again the next day, he doesen't like things to change, preferring to remain in this state of happiness and satisfaction for as long as possible. He liked to be with his family and, above all, he liked to protect those he cared about with everything he had.
That is why, when he opened the doors of the palace to find Olaf silent, without his usual smile and with a nervous posture, his alarms went off.
His older brother was the only outside creature that Marshmallow let past his defenses each and every time. Days after being created, the giant snowman thought that he had been forgotten by everyone once he fulfilled his purpose, one day after that Olaf appeared shouting 'brother!', and jumping all over the place like a little kid. They spent the day chasing each other around, Olaf playing a game named 'tag', and Marshmallow shouting at him to get out.
Since then, it is the only visit they received, even after the arrival of the Snowgies, Olaf stopped by at least once a week to visit them, tell them about the outside world and have fun with his snow family. And, even though he could be suffocating at times, Marshmallow really appreciated his brother's efforts to include them in his life.
But now...
Olaf whenever he came he knock just to be polite and would invite himself to the palace, rambling from one thing to another before running to the Snowgies to hug them all, now, his gaze was stuck on the ground as he waited patiently for... something, as if he had done something wrong and now had to face the consequences.
The awkward silence stretched for a good few minutes, with both snowmen waiting for the other to say or do something. Finally, Olaf raised his head and gave an awkward smile. "Hey big guy." His voice didn't have the usual energy, and his eyes had lost their shine. "Can I... can I come in?"
Marshmallow stepped away from the door as an invitation, only because he was too stunned to say or do anything else. Olaf entered silently and the giant snowman closed the door behind him. They both looked at each other intensely for a few seconds.
Marshmallow wasn't good with words, he wasn't made to speak (he couldn't even speak properly), if he could, Oh, if only he could! He would be bombarding the older snowman with questions because, clearly, his brother was not okay.
However, it was Olaf's turn again to break that awkward silence. "So...how have you been?" He didn't answer, but the carrot-nosed snowman didn't seem to have expected one "I'm sorry I came so soon, I hope I'm not a burden"
Marshmallow frowned, something definitely wasn't right here. Was Olaf apologizing to him for coming to visit them? His brothers? It was the first time it had happened in... ever! And a burden? Had Olaf considered himself a burden? The always kind and shameless Olaf?
What was happening to his brother?
"NO" was all he could say, no to sorry, no to burden, his brother shouldn't say those things and it only made Marshmallow feel more and more worried "NO, NO BOTHER"
He smiled and Marshmallow racked his brain for suitable words, but they were both interrupted by a rush of little feet rushing towards them. The Snowgies had been surprised that their brother had taken so long and they went down to investigate, only to find their older brother at the door and they attack, they approached Olaf jumping around him, each one waiting for his hug, which the older one was happy to do it, but not with the happiness and enthusiasm with which he always did it, dang it, Marshmallow hadn't received a hug yet.
And he wasn't sure why, but he really missed it.
The Snowgies dragged Olaf further into the castle and Marshmallow followed with heavy steps. He was a simple creature yes, but he was a protector and a brother.
And no matter what he, he would protect his loved ones.
I've always liked Marshmallow and Olaf, but I've never seen many stories about them together, being brothers (they are for me!)
Just a frozen snowmen fic because I love them, I hope you like it.
