The School for Good and Evil fanfiction – The next generation
Chapter 1 – Laralisa : Good or Evil
My best friend Rose and I always loved to read the tale of Sophie and Agatha, and always pretended that we were princesses, even if I never looked like one but Rose always did. Rose dressed in the prettiest pink dresses, just like the ones she had once seen Sophie wear around Gavaldon, and had the most luxurious strawberry blonde hair, and always wanted to go to the school for good and find her prince. But of course, she was terrified that she might end up like Sophie from the fairytale, wishing to be a princess but ending up an evil queen. Rose was beautiful, and she deserved to be a princess. No matter how much I told her that she should go to the school for good, she never listened, insisting that I was the kindest out of the two of them, as I always did good deeds for the people of Gavaldon, like helping the preschoolers or feeding the homeless. But I knew that I couldn't be a princess, as princesses had to hold themselves like one, look like one and dress like one. I always thought that I was far from a princess, with my straight brown shoulder length hair, dark eyes, pale skin, and face always bearing a frown. I was basically the opposite of a princess, who usually had neat, long hair, fair, clean faces and wore pretty dresses. Sometimes I wish that I could dress up like a princess, just like Rose, but my mother simply couldn't afford it; it was bad enough that my two younger brothers, Charlie, and Luca, always needed new clothes. Of course, I never mentioned this to my mother as I didn't want her to feel guilty.
That morning, I left my cottage, dressed in the only pleasant outfit I had, a loose-fit white dress, which Rose had gifted me on my birthday a year ago. I walked a couple of streets down to Sunny Avenue, where Rose lived. I approached her home, which looked exactly like a fairytale cottage, and knocked on the door. Immediately Rose answered, wearing a frilly pink dress, and strawberry locks of hair framing her rosy face. She studied me with her bright blue eyes, and said, "Lara! What happened to the hairbrush and lemon facewash I got you? Don't you want to look as lovely as me?" Despite Rose's big ego, I value her as a friend and even though it hurt, I am always thankful that I had someone to look out for me, even over the simple matter of how I looked.
"Rose, I really can't be bothered. Remember that time that the hairbrush got stuck in my hair while you were brushing it and when you forced me to use that dreaded facewash which stung my eyes so bad, they went red for a week?" I remarked, meeting Rose's eyes.
Rose giggled at the memory. "Yeah, I remember that. Fine, lets go on our walk."
We laughed and set off for Mr Deauville's bookshop, hunting for new storybooks to read. Together, we sat in the corner of the store, clutching fairytales that we've read thousands of times before, but never got over them.
"How amazing would it be if I went to the school for good?" Rose thought out loud, closing The little mermaid on her lap.
"What happened to being modest and saying that you couldn't possibly be a princess? What happened to not be wanting to end up vain like Sophie?" I asked, staring into Rose's eyes.
"Well, I had a think about it and decided that it would be great for me to be a princess! I'm not evil so I'd never end up like Sophie." She replied, twirling her strawberry curls, obviously now daydreaming about having a Prince or attending a ball.
"It would be great for you, but you wouldn't leave me, would you?" I said, eyes trailing back to read Peter Pan.
"Oh. Of course, I wouldn't leave you! You could come with me!" Rose said, putting her arm around my shoulder.
I looked up to Rose's face. "How would I come with you? The deans only choose one for good and the other for evil."
Rose smiled, and said, "You could go to the evil school? Then we would see each other at lunch and in the forest!"
"You think I'm evil? I thought you said that I'm the kindest person you've ever met!" I said, breaking free from Rose's grip.
Rose frowned. "Yes, but we both know that clearly, I'm the most fit to be a princess. I mean, look at me and then look at you! I'll be a perfect princess, and you could certainly be a fantastic witch!"
"I can't be a witch! That's so unfair!" I said angrily.
"What's unfair is you holding me back from being a princess because you're jealous."
I stood up, fists clenched, looking down on Rose.
"I thought we were friends. I can't believe you would think me evil." I threw the book, Peter Pan, at Rose, and stormed out of the bookshop, running home and sobbing. I didn't say a word to my mother as I threw myself onto my bed, crying into my dirty pillow.
Chapter 2 – Rose : DefinitelyGood
As I completed my morning skin routine, I wondered if Lara had forgiven me. What I had said was only the truth and there was definitely nothing rude about it, right? But somehow, I had still hurt my best friend's feelings, even though I technically didn't say anything offensive. I looked through my wardrobe and chose a flowery green dress and tied my long, beautiful hair into a bun and sat on the wooden porch steps at the front of my door, waiting for Lara to turn up with a frown on her face and the same white dress that I had bought for her birthday and was probably the nicest thing that she owned. I waited for ages, and soon it was afternoon and no sign of Lara. Hurt, I walked back into my home, careful not to frown so I wouldn't get any wrinkles and began to gather cucumbers for my midday skincare ritual. I still couldn't believe that Lara had left me. All day, I sat on my window seat, staring out into the town square, and watched as Lara gave granola and water to the homeless people and helped the preschoolers, just as she usually did after coming to go on a walk with me. That's when it hit me. I've never done anything good like that before! I'll never secure my place at the school for Good if I don't ACT Good! I bolted out of the house without saying goodbye to my mother, who was washing the dishes. What could I do that is good? First, I chucked some bread into the lake for the ducks to eat, then I helped people find clothes that actually suited them, and last I helped Mr Deauville restack books onto the shelves whilst reading my favourite parts of them. I grabbed a copy of The Tale of Sophie and Agatha and flipped to the part where Tedros tries to kill Agatha, but Sophie, in her warty hag form, turns the fired arrow into a daisy. I sighed. I could be an even better princess then Agatha. Even more good, even more beautiful, with an even better prince. If only I realised that I should have been doing good deeds long before today. But unfortunately, beauty was a full-time job, I didn't really have time to be kind. It shouldn't matter though because I was definitely Good. Right?
Chapter 3 – Laralisa : I'm a princess
I struggled to sleep that night, as I kept thinking about how tomorrow I should go and see Rose, say that I was sorry for storming off, and then we would be friends again. Then I would feed the homeless in the square, go to church, help the preschoolers, and then read more fairytales, life back to normal. Then I remembered my favourite fairytale, The Tale of Sophie and Agatha, was under my bed, and reading a little bit would surely help me fall asleep. I leaned over and took the cherry-coloured book out from under my bed and turned to my favourite part of the story, when Agatha and Sophie disappear back to Gavaldon, no need for princes, away from the expectations to be Good or Evil. Tears pricked at my eyes. Why did I be so harsh to Rose? She just wanted to be a princess and escape simple life. But what I couldn't understand was why she was willing to leave me, her best and only friend. The clock on the wall hit midnight, and suddenly a loud rush of wind blew into my face, blowing with such force that darkness clouded over my eyes, and the last thing I remembered was falling out of bed and my mother screaming.
I woke up in a field of red and yellow lilies which were having a conversation about me, which I could tell because they kept gesturing to me with their leaves. Then, the flowers tugged me to my feet. I looked around and saw beautiful girls, all with long, luxurious hair and angelic eyes and princess dresses, like a bunch of Roses but only much more sophisticated, like this was exactly what they were expecting. They all began to walk into a glass castle, so I followed. Crystal blue water surrounded the castle, turning into a sludgy brown moat around another castle halfway across, which was dark and gloomy, and all the towers were pointed at the top like spears. Inside, tall, neon-coloured Nymphs gave all of us timetables, books, and uniform. The other girls were slipping on their uniforms, which I did too. It was a dress that was tea-length chiffon in pink, with pink heeled Mary Jane shoes. Definitely something a princess should wear. Even though I always wished to be a princess, I was suddenly self-conscious, as all my life I have never been fortunate to wear a dress as fancy and princessy as this one. We were all ushered into a theatre, where Good and Evil were separated. I sat down, alone, as none of the princesses dared sit next to the girl with the unbrushed hair and sickly pale skin. Then, one girl did. She had clean, tanned skin and brown hair which she tied into a ponytail.
"Hello! My name is Yasmin. I'm from Shazabah. I'm related to Aladdin. You've probably heard of him." she said rather quickly.
"Hi Yasmin. I'm Laralisa, but you can call me Lara. And yeah, I've heard of Aladdin." I replied, relieved that at least one of the princesses here were civil.
"Nice to meet you!" Yasmin beamed, "Where are you from?"
"Gavaldon- I'm sorry, where is Shazabah? I've never heard of it." I asked.
"Well, I've never heard of Gavaldon, and I'm not surprised because- wait, Gavaldon as in The Tale of Sophie and Agatha Gavaldon? No way!"
"Uhh yeah."
"You must be a reader then. Oooo look the deans are coming onto the stage."
Yasmin turned to face a huge wooden stage at the front of the theatre, a young woman and an old woman standing in front. The older woman wore a blue gown with a silver swan crest over the heart, her white hair pulled into a tight bun. She had warm blue eyes and a kind smile. The younger woman had short golden hair and blazing green eyes, and she wore a purple gown with pointed shoulders. Unlike the older woman, she smirked at the sight of the evil students, as if they were as worthless as dirt. Suddenly she spoke.
"Welcome, new students, to the School for Good and Evil! I am Dean Sophie of Evil!" The woman announced grandly, throwing her hands up into the air. I could tell that she had a very large ego. She was obviously Sophie from the fairytale.
"And I am Professor Dovey, Dean of the School for Good." Professor Dovey said kindly, smiling at all the students, Good and Evil.
"Now, before we go through the rules, since Good won last year, the boys will do a special entrance." Sophie said, rolling her eyes.
Suddenly the doors of the theatre burst open, and all the good girls stood up in their seats, eager to see the show. I stood up as well, just to see what all the fuss was about. I heard the stomp of boots, the clash of steel, and then sixty boys came in in a swordfight. Sun-kissed skin peeked through light blue sleeves and stiff collars; tall navy boots matched high-cut waistcoats and knotted slim ties, each embroidered with a single gold initial. Sweat glistened on their faces as the swordfight ended. They all drew roses from their shirts and shouted "Milady!", throwing them to the girls who most catched their eye. All the princes sat down, and then another walked in. His hair was in a halo of gold, and he had warm, big brown eyes and slightly tanned skin. He pulled his sword and grinned, as forty boys came at him, but he disarmed them all quickly, as if he had done this many times before. He pulled the rose from his shirt.
"Who is that?" I asked Yasmin, who was staring at the prince, even if she already had her own rose. "That's Prince Theodore of Camelot! Queen Agatha and King Tedros' son!" she replied. But, instead of looking at the Good girls, his brown eyes were staring into evil. I followed them and saw who he was staring at. A beautiful girl with long, strawberry blonde hair, glistening blue eyes, fair, rosy skin and wearing a black dress which had a silver swan over the heart. Rose was in Evil.
Chapter 4 – Rose : How am I a witch?
After my nighttime skin routine, I slipped on my nightgown and slid into the silk sheets of my bed. Tonight, I will be whisked off to the Good school, where I would meet my prince and be a princess better than all the rest. Who needs Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Princess Agatha when you could have me? I couldn't sleep because I couldn't stop thinking about how Lara left me alone today. How dare she. I am her only friend, and I didn't even do anything wrong. I swelled up with hatred, heating up as I pictured her dead on the floor, facedown in a pool of blood. I wiped that horrible thought from my head. How could I imagine my best friend dead? That was so evil of me, there was no way someone as good as me could imagine something like that! It must have been Lara's fault, scheming to make me evil so she could teach me a lesson. What a jealous freak. As if a prince would ever love her. She is definitely no longer my friend anymore, because a princess could NOT be friends with a witch.
Suddenly a loud, powerful gust of wind blew into my face, pressing me hard against my bed with excruciating pain. The wind clasped around my throat, and I couldn't breathe. Tears began to swell in my eyes, and then the world went black.
I woke up in a dark forest, surrounded by people the same age as me, but the similarities ended there. They all had hideous faces, mishappen bodies and snarls on their faces. Surrounding us were huge, terrifying bony birds, which I recognised from The Tale of Sophie and Agatha as stymphs. The birds grabbed three students at a time in their beaks and flew off. I watched as ugly students where flown into the air, and then one of the birds grabbed me by the collar of my nightgown.
"AHHHHH! Help me!" I screamed, waving my arms and legs as I dangled with two girls in mid air, the stymph soaring through the clouds. The girl on my left had a large nose, greasy black hair and many earrings, while the girl on my right was plump and had short brown hair and a tiny nose but big ears. The bird flew over a mountain, and then I saw it. The school for good and evil. But I wasn't heading for Good. It flew up to the tallest tower at the school for evil and landed inside. The two girls, unfazed, walked through a hall, so I followed, and I saw a large wolf standing infront of me.
"GO TO THE LEFT AND GRAB YOUR UNIFORM AND BOOKS YOU WORTHLESS MULE." It yelled, scaring me.
So I did what it said, chucking on the putrid black dress that was the uniform for evil girls and following the others down the hallway to a large building, which appeared to be a theatre. I held back sobs. Someone will sort this out. Someone will realise that I'm meant to be in Good, that I'm a princess. Because there was no way that I was a witch. I sat down alone, since I didn't want to catch whatever ugly disease those villains were carrying. After the deans spoke, the Good boys came in. They were all so handsome. But there was one, with golden hair and big brown eyes, the one I knew would be mine. He looked into my eyes and I looked into his. My prince.
Chapter 5 – Lara : Prince who?
Prince Theodore stared at Rose, shocked that there was a witch so beautiful. I was shocked too. Part of me was glad that she was in evil, since she totally deserved it, but the other part of me felt bad for her, as all she ever wanted was to be a princess; to be in my place. The prince, fully focused on Rose, carelessly chucked his rose into the crowd of Good girls. They all reached for it, as if it were something of great value…and it landed in my lap. Everyone stared at me, including Theodore. He looked me right in the eyes. I frowned and chucked the rose back at him. I didn't need a rose. Princes were nauseating. Surprised, he stumbled to grab it. He stared at me in confusion, like he'd never seen a princess refuse his rose before. Then, he threw the rose to Rose, who smiled and reached to grab it – but another princess leapt up in front before the rose could cross into evil territory and caught it. She had long blond hair and bangs, dark blue eyes, and peachy skin. She smirked at Rose and then turned to Theodore and curtsied before sitting back down. He frowned at her and then looked at the floor, all of Good staring at him, ashamed that he had tried to throw a rose to a witch. They all expected something better out of Camelot's future king. He went red and quickly walked to his seat next to the other Good boys, who whispered to him and he went a shade redder. I watched as Rose slumped into her seat, then noticed me. She snarled and I quickly focused on the deans. Dean Sophie was smiling, as if she had seen before what had just happened.
The deans went through their rules, and Good and Evil went back to their schools. Afterwards, I turned to Yasmin.
"A ball? There is no way I'm going to go to a BALL. With a PRINCE." I said.
"Well, suit yourself, but every Evergirl needs an Everboy to ask them to the Snow Ball or they are automatically failed, which means getting turned into a animal or plant, otherwise known as a mogrif." She said, looking at me sincerely.
"That's so sexist." I say, fussing over my own hair.
"Well, that's tradition. Princesses need Princes to protect them in the woods, so if they can't even get one to ask them to a dance then there is no way they will survive in the forest. They are best being a helpful animal or a peaceful plant." Yasmin informs me, checking her nails as we walked to our dormitories, which luckily, I shared with Yasmin.
"Alright, I'll think about it. But it's still disgusting." I say, poking my tongue out.
We giggled like how Rose and I once did. But she was a witch now, and a princess could never be friends with a witch.
Chapter 6 – Rose : I'm not ugly
I was furious that that blonde haired hooligan had stolen my prince rose. I deserved it, he threw it to me, not her. I walked down the corridors of evil alone, with nothing but my thoughts. How is Lara a princess? She was careless, had low self-esteem, no priority for her skincare or beauty and always frowned. I should be in her spot. I approached the door of my dormitory, currently inhabited by my would-be roommates. But not for long, as the first chance I get I'll throw Lara in this horror-house and I'll be the one going to the school for good. My room was Malice 66, famously known as the room of the 'Three witches of room 66' room, and Dean Sophie's old dormitory. I opened the old, wooden door to a room with four, dirty beds, each occupied by an ugly witch, chatting away about their school books and relatives, before stopping and laying their eyes on Rose, a butterfly amongst spiders. They sneered, and got up. The first witch had greasy black hair which she wore loose and sickly pale skin. She had multiple piercings, including one on her tongue, nose, eyebrow and ears, but not nearly as many as the other witch I saw before.
"Look at this one, girls. Look at her luscious hair." The witch rose her spidery hand to touch it, when I moved back.
"DON'T. TOUCH. MY. HAIR." I said abruptly, slapping the witch.
"Well, even if she looks like a princess she certainly doesn't act like one." Another witch said, who had dark brown skin and hair horribly streaked with blue, along with a tattoo on her wrist of a skull.
The plump witch with short black hair I saw earlier spoke, with a surprisingly sweet voice. "Don't worry, I'm sure she's a witch like the rest of us. All of evil doesn't have to look ugly all the time, just like Dean Sophie said." She grabbed my hand like she was my friend and smiled gesturing at an empty bed. "Welcome to Room 66, the legendary room of the three witches. I'm Millicent, the one with the blue hair is Gertrude, and the one that's all pierced is Jennice. What's your name?"
"Rose." I say, not really paying attention to Millicent and staring at the monstrosity that she was meant to live in.
"Very princessy. Are you sure that you're in the right school?" Jennice asked.
"No, I'm in the wrong place. Please help me get to the school for good! I…" But Gertrude rudely interrupted me.
"That's not how it works. There have never been any mistakes here. Once or twice people think that they're in the wrong school, but that never happens."
"But there's an exception for me! There has to be a mistake! I'm a princess not a witch!" I cried, tears beginning to rise again.
Jennice seized me by collar suddenly and pulled me out onto the balcony, my head and chest hanging over whilst Millicent held my legs, just stopping me from falling to my death. I screamed.
"Oh, shut up. If you are a princess, then when Milli lets go the fairies will catch you. But if you are a witch, you will fall to CERTAIN DEATH. Let's see if you're a princess, shall we?" Jennice sneered, smirking.
"No! Please, don't! I'm a princess! The fairies won't come to this side! I'll fall to my death either way! I'm not a witch! Please!" I sobbed.
"Yeah? Well, what makes you a princess, and us witches, when we are all in the same school?" Gertrude asked, smiling maleficently.
"LOOK AT ME AND LOOK AT YOU!" I screamed.
Millicent pulled me onto the balcony. The three witches were shocked.
"Please, I'm not evil! I'm a princess, just look at me, definitely…" but then Millicent cut me off.
"…an evil witch. And here I thought Jennice was the most cold-hearted one here, but it turns out its you. Oh well, at least now we know that you were meant to be here all along. Best be off to bed; classes start in the morning."
The witches left me on the balcony, crying, whilst staring out at the beautiful glass castle that was the school of good, where right now her prince was probably in a swordfight, or something princely like that.
Chapter 7 – Theodore: Nothing like my father
Just like my father, I tend to work out a lot in times of stress. It was eleven o'clock, and I was still in the Groom Room, lifting weights and swimming laps in the pools. The welcoming ceremony had got on my nerves, I don't know what came over me when I decided to throw my rose to a beautiful witch. I didn't dare write to my father, as he would have freaked out and began talking about his mistakes in school, and the only way for me to get him to stop was to say, "But didn't all that lead you to meeting Mother?". I wrote to my mother earlier, who was always wise in situations like this. A Camelot carrier pigeon flew in through the open window, dropped a letter and flew off. I opened it and read.
My dearest Theo,
Sounds like something that happened to your father, but I won't dwell on it since I know how much you hate talking about your father's past. In my advice, follow where your heart and soul take you, even if it takes you to an ever. Because if it is wrong, then you will find the right. Go to sleep and don't spend all night in the Groom Room. Also, I won't tell your father if you don't want me to.
Love always,
Mother
Clutching the letter, I frowned. How is that going to help? Follow where your heart and soul take you? How stupid. My heart and soul need to lead me too good always, since I am pure good, not evil. I had a think about the girls I had seen at the ceremony. The first girl I saw was the witch, who was the prettiest girl I've ever seen, and witches were ugly, so she was probably in the wrong school. Then there was that Evergirl with the dark eyes and hair who was frowning the entire ceremony and chucked my rose back to me, as if she had no idea who I was, as if she didn't care I was a prince, unlike every other princess. She was definitely a witch then, who stole the pretty girl's place here in Good.
Hanging my towel on my shoulder and shirtless, I walk through the halls of Good to get to my dormitory. Then I bump into a girl with long blonde hair and dark blue eyes. She smiled sweetly.
"Theo! How delightful to see you! What are you doing up this late?" she asked, batting her eyelashes.
I forced a fake smile back, "Just doing some working out. But I could ask you the same question."
The girls' eyes trailed down to my muscles on my stomach. I was used to girls looking at me for my looks, but this girl seemed rather pushy.
"Oh, just a bit of late-night reading." Her eyes met mine. "I'm Ella, by the way." She said, before curtsying and walking down the hall.
My father told me to be wary of girls like her, girls who only wanted me for my fame, reputation and looks. Girls who wanted to be a Queen and didn't really care about who their King was.
I frowned. I'm making the same mistakes my father did when he was at school. Mother warned me, Father warned me, actually, they have warned me many times before I even got accepted into the School for Good. It was like they knew something that I didn't. But then it hit me.
Who cares?
Its my life to live and I have complete control over it, no matter how important it is to choose a good Queen for Camelot I didn't need to worry, since I wouldn't make the same mistakes as my father.
Chapter 8 – Laralisa: Friendships
I couldn't sleep that night. I sat on the canopy bed, with silk sheets, curtains, and hundreds of fluffy pillows, staring out the window onto the School for Evil. I missed Rose, no matter how bad she can treat me. I wish she could be in the School for Good with me, and now that I think about it, I should take her place in Evil, as there was no way I could get a prince to ask me to the Snow Ball, neither would I want to. Boys were disgusting and mindless, especially self-absorbed princes like Theodore.
In the morning, I dressed in my frilly Evergirl uniform and walked down to the clearing with Yasmin for breakfast. A neon nymph handed me a picnic basket filled with tomato toasties, pistachio ice cream and gluten-free pancakes. I looked across the field and saw Rose, crying all alone as she fidgeted with her gruel. She looked up and her blue eyes met mine, and a smile flashed onto her face. She took her tin of gruel and walked over to the good side, pushed away Yasmin (who frowned slightly and left to sit next to Ella and the other Evergirls. I looked at her with an apologetic expression, but she was obviously hurt. Great. Now I lost my only friend here at the School for Good. I frowned at Rose, who appeared to be eating my breakfast.
"What? Do you expect me to eat this slop that Evil eats? Actually, you should be eating it since you clearly should be at that school. You took my place. You'd love it there, its all dark and there's no bright colours and everyone is ugly and don't look like princesses, just like you." She said with a full mouth.
Even though her words stung, deep down, I knew I should be in the School for Evil. But I didn't want to admit it. Instead, I smiled at her.
"Also, who is that prince over there?" she asked, pointing at Theo.
"Oh, that stuck-up guy? He's Prince Theodore of Camelot." I answered, rolling my eyes. Rose didn't notice my reaction.
"Wait. He's King Tedros and Queen Agatha's son? So, he's a real prince?" she asked, eyes lighting up as she stared at him. I nodded, then looked at Rose in the eyes.
"I miss you Rose. I miss our walks in Gavaldon and giggling whilst we read storybooks together." I said, about to cry.
Rose was already crying, clearly feeling the same way I did. "Me too Lara! I miss you! I miss simple life! I don't want to be a villain, and I don't want to be Good all my life, even if it sounds amazing!"
We hugged, crying. Everyone in the clearing glared at us, a princess, and a witch, together? But we didn't care, we just want to go home, away from the pressures of Good and Evil.
I wiped my eyes, letting go of Rose. "But how will we do it? How will we get home? It's not like we can break into the school master tower since there is no wise school master to talk to, and the deans probably don't know."
"I guess we could check the history books. I'm sure there is something." She replied, starting to eat my pistachio icecream.
After breakfast, I saw Yasmin walking infront of me in the halls, so I caught up to her.
"Hey Yasmin! Where are you goi…" I started, but she talked over me.
"Sorry Lara, but I don't talk to witches."
"I'm not a witch. I go to the School for Good, remember? Just like you." I replied, slightly hurt but trying not to show it.
"Anyone who hangs out with a witch is a definitely a witch." Yasmin answered, turning her nose up and hurrying to catch up with Ella.
I can't believe my only friend in the School for Good did that. But it didn't matter since Rose, and I would be going home soon.
Chapter 9 – Rose: Plots and twists
I couldn't believe that Lara thought that I would actually go home to that stinky, simple town. I've read the tale of Sophie and Agatha, and I know that there is no way out of here permanently. You are always drawn back to this magical world. But I was going to plot to win that prince, the one with the slightly sunkissed skin, dark, big eyes, and golden hair, his name was Theodore, and he was mine. But unlike Sophie, who thought the same thing, I am completely good, and I am definitely a princess. Not a witch underneath all my beauty. Because the tale of Sophie and Agatha and how it happened is in our new history books, mentioning that I would need to find true loves kiss with Theodore, and then I win it, also winning his affection, and boom. Happily, ever after for me, I become Queen of Camelot.
What a twist in the story, right?
Chapter 10 – Laralisa: First class
I walked into class, alone, at sat at the back, alone.
"Welcome, welcome! I am Professor Anemone, and welcome to Beautification! Today, we will be working on our smiles." The professor said, who looked like a middle-aged Arabian princess.
I nearly burst out laughing. Smiles? Why would I need to know how to smile?
"You must be able to smile beautifully in the woods to survive, in the hope that a prince might take you under his wing. A princess's smile can stop the harshest of wars. It's an Evergirls most powerful weapon." She continued, as if she read my mind.
"Ella! Show me your smile!" Anemone said, pointing at Ella, who smiled beautifully.
"Wonderful! That smile will get you any prince you desire! Yasmin, show us your smile!"
Yasmin smiled gracefully, and Anemone gushed, "Beautiful Yasmin! It will do you good!"
The professor continued, asking every girl to smile their prettiest smile. Then she got to me.
"Laralisa! Show me your smile!"
Everyone was staring at me. I couldn't smile like a princess. I didn't even look like a princess. I look like a witch, just like Rose said. But I needed to stay human until me and Rose went home, so I smiled.
Professor Anemone cringed. "Stop, Laralisa, stop! If you ever, EVER need a prince to save you, DO NOT smile at him."
The class snickered, and a golden number 1 appeared over Ella's head, a silver 2 over Yasmin's, and so on until a brown, dirty, and smelly 20 appeared over my head. A fail.
Chapter 11 – Rose: Uglification Impossible
First class will be a nightmare. I was carrying my textbook, which stank and was called, "The freedom of ugliness". How does being ugly FREE you?
"How does being ugly help at all?" I asked Millicent, who I walked to class with. I didn't like her very much, since she had horrible hair and was fat, and I didn't trust fat people. Or people with horrible hair.
"It's meant to free us and all this other crap. Dean Sophie is against this class, but Professor Manley and the other teachers insisted it stay. Now, here we are." she answered.
Dean Sophie sounded like my type of person.
"Welcome class, to Uglification!" the professor said, who was obviously past his middle age years, was balding and had warts all over his face which was frozen in a frown. "My name is Professor Manley" with this, he spat something out of his mouth, which hit a student in the eye. "Ha! I just spat out a tooth! It's disgusting! Its ugly! Its FREEDOM" he cheered, and the whole class followed, except for me. What a useless class.
"Sir, is this class mandatory?" I asked as politely as I could.
"Urgh. Another Sophie." He muttered under his breath. "Yes! It is! So don't try being a pretty princess and be an ugly witch like you should be."
I felt like crying. How can I confront Theodore at lunch if I'm ugly?
Magically, a bowl of foul, green liquid appeared infront of everybody.
"Drink up if you want to be FREE!" Manley shouted, slurping down his own green liquid. Seconds later, his face erupted in black warts. Every student clapped, except me. I watched in horror as the students around me gleefully chugged their potions and found joy in running their fingers over their faces to find warts and blemishes. Then, glowing ranks appeared over everybody's heads, over mine was a manure-smelling 20.
"Failed, for refusing to embrace your ugliness." Professor Manley sneered.
How in the world would I survive the next class?
Chapter 12 – Laralisa: Wish Fish
I was sitting on luscious green grass, isolating myself from all the prissy, self-absorbed princesses who were giggling about whatever princesses found funny. Then I realised that they were all sneaking peeks at me, revealing that they found that I was amusing. What idiots. How in the world do they survive in the woods? Then a teacher spoke in a soft voice. She had dark skin, hair and eyes, a small button nose, and looked just like a princess out of a fairytale.
"I am Princess Uma." she began, "and welcome to animal communication. In your first year, you will learn to chirp, bark and neigh. But it is tradition for the first year Evergirls to try their turn with Wish Fish. Now, there is one rule. Do not ever turn my animal friends back to their original form, since of course all animals are mogrifs and were once humans. This was a power that Queen Agatha of Camelot was renowned for because of her pure good soul. These are new wish fish, so please do not do anything to them. But it is not a topic we will dwell on…"
I didn't listen to the rest of what Uma had to say. I couldn't stop thinking how horrible it was that all those animals were once humans.
"Now girls, make a line and one at a time place your right index finger into the water, and think of your greatest wish!" she said happily.
Ella pushed infront of the line, gently placing her finger into the water and then closing her eyes. The little white fish vibrated, and then began to swim in all directions, painting a picture.
At last, it painted Theodore on one knee, holding Ella's hand and asking her to the Snow Ball.
"Beautiful Ella! You must get that Theodore; he is truly yours!" she cried gently.
Then Yasmin went, who placed her finger into the water. The wish fish vibrated, and then stopped, staring up at her.
"Oh dear, foggy mind." Princess Uma said.
Every princess had their turn, Lola, then Bella, then Tabitha, Sabrina, and Celia, then me. The Evergirls who hadn't had their turn yet frowned a little and rolled their eyes.
Nervous, I slowly walked towards the lake, got down on my knees, and carefully put my finger into the water. Instantly, the fish began to vibrate, quicker and quicker as I tried to think of my heart's desire. Friends, Beauty, Princess, Witch, Good, Evil, Prince, ew no prince, happily ever after, no I don't believe in those until I finally came to my decision. Home.
All of a sudden the water began pulling my arm in, turning black and creeping up my arm. It was up to my elbow now.
"Stop this at once!" Princess Uma said, crossing her arms.
It began crawling up onto my shoulder, going over my mouth. "Help!" I desperately tried to cry, but all that came out was 'mmm'. Suddenly the wish fish leapt out of the water, turning into a young girl who had tears in her eyes.
"Thank you for your kindness, princess." She said with the voice of a child, and then vanished into thin air in a flash of gold light. I turned around, eyes bulging with shock of whatever happened, but everyone was running towards the castle, screaming loudly. From the forest, thousands of animals came stampeding out, and I could hear their thoughts. 'Help me!' 'Free me princess' 'Turn me back!' They all ran around me and over me. I tried desperately to crawl away, and then I ran. I ran as far as I could, until a massive stymph landed infront of me. It snarled, then sat down like a dog. At first, I felt fear, and then I realised as I looked into its large, black beady eyes. It was once a student, just like me. 'Please princess, I've been waiting 100 years, free me.' It thought, magically appearing in my mind.
"I'm so sorry." I said, face clouding with empathy. "I don't know how. The wish fish were an accident."
It searched my face, seeing if I was lying, before it saw my statement was genuine and lowered its head. Sympathetic, I reached out my hand to pat its bony head…
A silver sword impaled its heart in a second. I stumbled back, looking up to see who the monster was that killed this innocent student. Theodore was standing, face glowing with sweat and heaving heavy breaths. He looked at me, and I stood up.
"How could you do something so evil?!" I yelled, stabbing my finger out at the dead stymph.
"What do you mean? I just saved your life! That thing was about to kill you!" he yelled back, pointing his sword at the stymph.
"Your so STUPID! Stymphs don't attack Evers you IDIOT." I shout. Theodore went red.
"Who cares? It was going to kill you anyway! I should have let it! A real princess would have thanked me, but obviously you're a WITCH."
I decided it was no point arguing, and left Theodore standing there next to the dead beast. I stomped off to the castle, hiding in my dormitory until lunch began. Then there was a knock at my door.
Annoyed, I stood up and opened it. Standing before me was Professor Dovey who I recognised from the welcoming.
"May I come in, Laralisa dear?" she asked, smiling.
"Sure." I said, leaving her and turning to sit on one of the four couches in the centre of the dormitory. She joined me.
"So, I heard about what happened in animal communication class earlier." She said, sounding stern but soft at the same time.
"Oh yeah. Please don't fail me Professor, I swear it was an accident!" I cried.
"No need to shout, I understand. Queen Agatha of Camelot did the same thing whilst she was at school, only it involved a dead gargoyle and a tower on fire. You, on the other hand, freed Princess Uma's new wish fish, caused an animal stampede and a dead stymph."
"I didn't kill the stymph, Theodore did!" I cried again.
"I've already spoke to him dear, who, by the way, had a lot to say about you. He said that you are a witch who called him a stupid idiot."
"Oh. Yeah."
"But you are not a witch, since last lesson proved that you have the most special ability- the ability to grant wishes without any magic whatsoever except for the power of Goodness. You, Laralisa, have a soul of pure good and therefor are 100% a princess."
"But look at me! I can't be a princess! My hair, my eyes, my nose…" I started.
"Have you ever looked in the mirror dear? Is that what you see? A witch?" she asked.
"No, I hate mirrors. They're useless."
To my horror, Dovey concurred a mirror with a magic wand.
"Look into the mirror, Laralisa." She said calmly.
"No." I resisted, shielding my eyes and turning away.
"Look into the mirror." Dovey repeated, sternly.
"I don't want to." I said, tightening my hold on my eyes.
"Are you afraid of what you'll see?"
"No, I already know what I will see."
"Which is?"
"An ugly witch, just like what everyone has told me all my life."
Professor Dovey sighed. "That's alright. I best be off now. Now hurry off to lunch before your food gets cold."
She left me alone in the room, curled up on the couch, still shielding my eyes even if nothing was there.
Chapter 13 – Rose: My Prince
Lunch was starting, so I walked happily to the clearing, reciting my plan in my head. I would go to Lara, say, 'I found the answer! True loves kiss just like in the story of Sophie and Agatha, and then we can go home! Oh no, since I'm definitely not a witch, unlike Sophie, it will 100% work.' And then we plot how to get Theodore to kiss me, then he falls in love with me, and I say that I should be an Ever and Lara a Never since she hates princes and dancing, then Theo takes me to the Snow ball and in 5 years to Camelot! I did a little dance, imagining myself as QUEEN of the most important kingdom in all the woods! But, I couldn't kiss him, since it might make Lara and I go back to Gavaldon.
I walked through the tunnel of trees and found Lara, sitting next to a picnic basket. I skipped past the wolf handing out gruel and over to her. She beamed and opened the picnic basket, which had Rutabaga bisque, parsley slaw and lavender petits fours. I stuffed it all down. Lara frowned at me, but I smiled at her, which made her face go neutral.
"Have you checked the history book? I didn't have time since I was out of the castle for animal communication." She asked.
I groaned a little. I was meant to be taking animal communication, not Lara! I've been talking to animals all my life! Sure, I hated the germ-invented beasts, but that's what princesses did!
"Yeah, actually. The only way of proving that two readers don't belong in this school is by the one in evil finding true loves kiss." I answered, eating the parsley slaw.
"But that's what happened in the Tale of Sophie and Agatha, and they ended up coming back to school. We want to stay in Gavaldon forever." She frowned, eating a couple of the lavender petits fours.
"Yes, but our situation is different. Sophie was actually evil, not a princess like she thought. I'm 100% good and in the wrong school, so it will work for us." I said.
"Alright. If you say so. Who would you kiss?" Lara asked, sounding slightly suspicious.
I smiled brightly, filled with happiness that my best friend was going to subconsciously help me find my ever after with a prince. I gestured to Theodore, in the middle of a sword fight with another prince.
"Theodore!" Lara blurted so loud I had to lean forward and cover her mouth.
Hearing his name, Theodore put away his sword and turned around, seeing the two of us together, sitting in the grass near the Evergirls. I smiled at him and quickly pulled my hand away from Lara's mouth, who saw that he was looking and frowned at him. I nudged her.
"Don't frown at him!" I whispered. "You're going to make me have a bad impression!"
Theodore began to walk over. "Your friends with that witch?" he asked me, pointing to Lara.
"She's not really a witch. She just acts like one." I said sweetly. I could tell that Lara was hurt by that, but I didn't acknowledge it.
"Of course she's a witch! She accused me of killing an innocent child when it was really a stymph that was about to kill her!" he said, looking at Lara now.
"It was a child! And stymphs don't hurt Evers!" Lara defended, crossing her arms.
"Well, that one was obviously going to hurt you, so that makes you a Never." He said to her, who looked shocked.
"It wasn't going to hurt me you dumbass!" Lara yelled.
"Please, stop shouting you two. What's past is past. Lara, the noble prince is obviously right, we both know that we were meant to be in opposite schools so don't delve too deeply into it and go to lies to try and defend yourself, you're only making the situation worse." I say, trying to sound as wise and delicate as possible.
Lara looked even more hurt, and she stood up, storming off, out of the clearing. I looked up at Theodore, who smirked, and I smiled at him.
"Theodore." He said, holding his hand out to me. "You can call me Theo, though."
I smiled brighter and took his hand. "Rose. It's lovely to meet you Theo."
He pulled me up and his big, warm brown eyes looked into mine. "How do you feel about going for a walk Rose?" he asked.
"It's a pleasure, my prince." I said, doing a little curtsy.
He cringed a little, but smiled, and we went on our walk, laughing at each other's jokes.
"You are most definitely not a witch." He said.
"That's what I've been trying to tell everyone." I laughed.
"You are a beautiful princess." He smiled, taking my other hand.
"Beautiful?" I whispered.
"And smart." He whispered back. He smelt of warm mint. "If only we could show everyone that you were a princess, then I would be able to take you to the Snow Ball."
The words were like sweet chocolate melting in my mouth.
"The Snow Ball?" I asked.
"The Evers ball, the night after the Circus." Theo explained.
"Oh, Theo! You promise?" I beamed.
"I promise. But don't tell anyone. Now, what is your plan to show everyone that you are Good?" he asked.
"If we teamed up in the trial by tale, surely everyone would see I am a princess, since a prince like you wouldn't help a witch. Well, except that one time with Lara." I said.
"Perfect plan. And what happened with Lara, forget about it. I'm going to pretend it didn't happen. Witches like her shouldn't be trusted."
"You're 100% right. Out of curiosity, where are you from?" I asked him.
"Camelot. How about you?" he replied.
"Gavaldon. Or Woods Beyond, as you call it here." I answered.
"Ah. A reader. My mother was a reader." He said.
"That's lovely. What was her name?"
"Agatha." He smiled. "Means, 'good soul'."
"Wait, are you the son of Queen Agatha and King Tedros?" I asked him, although I already knew.
"Yeah. Pretty cool, huh?"
"Yes." I said breathlessly, making Theo smile. "Do you talk to your father often?"
"No, I don't really have a lot of regard for my father." He answered, looking down at the green grass.
"I think you should talk you your father. I never liked mine, and then one day he disappeared, and I wished that I had spent more time with him." I confessed. Theo looked like his father, the body structure, the hair, the nose and face shape and smile. But he had his mother's eyes, warm and brown. He had a mix of his father's tanned skin and his mother's white skin, leaving him looking sun kissed.
"I'll take a think about it. Thanks for the walk, by the way. I really enjoyed it." He said, beaming.
"I enjoyed it too."
Then we walked through our separate tunnels of trees, his to Good, mine to Evil. But soon I would be walking through the same tunnel as him.
All with the help of my prince.
Chapter 14 – Lara: The Blue Forest
I couldn't believe that Rose said all those things about me. Of course, there was the possibility that she was just saying what Theo would have wanted to hear. I smiled at the thought of Rose actually being a supportive friend lately.
The next class was surviving fairy tales, so we had to go to the blue forest. I walked, alone, to the forest, and found a bunch of Evers and Nevers, listening to a gnome talk.
"Hello, students. Welcome to surviving fairy tales. I am Yuba the gnome. Around me there are 5 flags, and when I call your name go behind the flag. No swapping groups either because I will see."
Everybody muttered and whispered amongst themselves.
"For group one. Lola, Tabitha, Felix, Malcom, Odin, Daeva."
3 Nevers walked to a white flag that wrote 'Group 1'. Then two Evergirls goggled and giggled at Everboy Felix whilst the 3 of them walked to the flag as well.
"For group two. Louis, Alexander, Sabrina, Melantha, Leila, and Morris."
The three Evers and Nevers reluctantly gathered behind a flag that said, 'Group 2'.
"For group three. Ella, Theodore, Laralisa, Rose, Millicent, and Aaron."
Hearing my name, I walked to my flag. At least I was with Rose, the only person that I liked out of everybody here. Then I saw Theodore and Rose exchange smiles. I was alone after all.
"As you all know, only one group will have a lesson in the forest at a time, and I just wanted to call you all over, so you knew your groups. Today is group 3." The gnome announced.
All the other groups left, revealing Theodore and Rose standing close to each other.
"Oh, so the witch is your princess now. You know that Evers can't date Nevers. Hasn't your father told you that?" Ella sneered at Theodore, who frowned.
"You have no right to talk about my father. Mind your own business."
"And here I thought I would be your princess, Theo. I guess not." Ella said, standing straighter.
"Only people who are close with me can call me Theo, and you will never be close with me."
Ella rolled her eyes and crossed her arms, casting disgusted looks at Rose who merely smirked.
"Hello, Group 3. Today, we will be using the rules to choose between disguised Evers and Nevers. Remember, the Good defend, the Evil attack. The Good forgive, the Evil punish. The Good help, the Evil hurt. The Good give, the Evil take. The Good love, the Evil hate. The Never will need to trick in order to be chosen, and the Ever needs to be pure in order to be chosen."
Everyone chattered quickly.
"First, Laralisa and Rose. I will turn them into goblins and Theodore must choose which one is the Ever. Turn around Theodore, you cannot look."
Rose and I were instantly turned into Goblins, and then Theodore turned around and stared at me, then Rose, but of course, he didn't know which was which.
With a dreamy look in his eyes, as if he felt a pull towards the goblin on the right, me, he began walking closer. "This one is Rose, the princess." He declared. I kicked him. Theodore cringed and pretended that it didn't hurt, and turned to the other Goblin, Rose. Rose stared at me, and then pounced, punching me in stomach.
"WHAT SPELL DID YOU CAST THAT MADE HIM CHOOSE YOU FIRST?!" she yelled, but it came out in goblin.
"I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!" I yelled back, strangling her, also now speaking in goblin.
Meanwhile, Theodore stood there, watching two Goblins fighting, confused. Now Rose got on top of me, hitting me in the face. "YOU RUINED IT. IF HE CHOSE ME, HE WOULD HAVE KNOWN I WAS A PRINCESS SINCE HE WAS DRAWN TO ME, BUT INSTEAD HE LOOKED AT YOU." She yelled in goblin.
She was still hitting me. "THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING!" I screamed.
Theodore stepped forward and hit Rose off of me. "Hey! Leave Rose alone!" he said to Rose, lying on the floor, shocked that her prince hit her. Smiling, he turned to me, expecting me to smile back for saving me because he thought I was Rose, but instead I kneed him in the shin. "OWW!" he yelled, then held his breath, closing his eyes, instantly Rose quickly ran to take my spot, shoving me aside, probably with the hope that Theodore would think that she was her, but to be honest I don't know how that was going to work.
"The rules! Use the rules!" Yuba shouted.
The prince opened his eyes, which found Rose, who was batting her eyelashes, and speaking in Goblin, "I forgive you Theodore for hitting me, and I will continue to love you if you defend our love like I do, and I will give you all my love."
I nearly burst into laughter. How is that using the rules? Instead, it was Theodore who laughed.
"Ha! That witch is smarter than you would think! Trying to separate me and my princess so that she can have her best friend back!" he said, stabbing his finger at Rose, who immediately stopping batting her eyelashes and gave him a cold, hard glare. Theodore turned and looked directly at me, the same glow in his eyes. He looked down and smiled at me. "This one is definitely the princess. Rose."
Then I began to grow taller, Rose too, until dark hair sprouted from my head, my ears shrank and rounded, nose grew smaller, and skin went from greenish brown to its pale colour. Next to me, Rose crossed her arms and threw me and Theodore betrayed looks. The moment he realised I wasn't Rose, he stepped towards her, glowering at me.
"What did you do to me to choose you?" he asked, looking at me up and down. "You cursed me, didn't you? You witch. You should be in the Evil School, not Rose. You clearly put an evil spell on me to separate me and Rose so you could have her. Well, too bad, because it didn't work."
Rose beamed at him, finally happy that she'd gotten her prince. It felt like I had been stabbed in the back, holding myself back from crying from betrayal. But deep down, it felt like it was all part of Rose's plan to send us back to Gavaldon and be best friends again.
Chapter 15 – Theodore: Courage
Stupid witch, trying to separate Rose and I. Rose was so sweet, telling me to talk to my father. That's when I remembered that I said that I would. I winced; it would take a lot of courage. But courage is what it took to talk to Rose, to come to school, to someday take on the responsibility of being King of Camelot. I sat on my bed, pulled out a pen and paper, and began to write.
Dear Father,
I know I don't usually send letters to you, but someone reminded me how important a father is, and her name is Rose. She has the most beautiful smile, strawberry blonde hair, and bright blue eyes. She was put in the School for Evil, but we both know that she is truly good, so we planned to team up in the trial by tale so the whole school knows that she is an Ever. Her friend is a witch who stole her place in the School for Good, cursing me to choose her goblin instead of Rose's in surviving fairy tales class. There is another girl, Ella, who keeps sitting close to me and acting like we are together, but I told her I have eyes for someone else. Earlier today I killed a stymph by accident, trying to save Lara, the witch, but then she accused me of killing an innocent child. How crazy? Anyways, I hope you're enjoying life and stuff.
From Theo
I stuffed it in an envelope and gave it to a carrier pigeon to send to Camelot. Then, I fixed up my uniform and set off for dinner.
I entered the Supper Hall, and found Rose sitting with Lara, chatting away. I can't believe that they were still friends. I approached them, holding out my hand to Rose.
"Lets go sit together, my princess." I said.
"Of course, my prince." She giggled, taking my hand.
We left Lara sitting alone, moving her food around her plate. A nymph came and handed us our food; Ham hock pie, asparagus with truffle sauce and peppermint meringues. I began to eat, then looked up at Rose, who sat there, f. What was it with princesses and not eating infront of people? I swallowed my food and smiled back. "I wrote a letter to my father." I told her. She looked confused for a moment, and then beamed.
"You took my word? How nice!" she said.
"Yeah, thanks for that." I tell her. "I just wanted to know, how come you're friends with Lara?"
"Oh. It's a long story." She said, smile disappearing from her face.
"No, I'll listen."
Her smile returned a little, her eyes a bit teary. "We were at school together when we were 9, reading fairytales. We weren't friends yet, of course. I walked to the book shelf, reaching for The Tale of Sophie and Agatha, my favourite story. But Lara had been there too, reaching for the same book. I smiled at her and said that we could read it together. So, we did. We laughed at Sophie's beauty routine, gaped in shock when Tedros asked Agatha to ball, cried when he tried to kill her. But we both agreed, the best part was when Sophie and Agatha went back home, no need for princes. So, we became friends. I gave her makeovers, I lent her my dresses, we were the best of friends. Until we had a fight, she said that she didn't like me giving my things to donations when I could be lending them to her, or spending time with the preschoolers when I should be spending time with her. And that was when I decided that I needed more than a friend in my life. I needed a Prince."
I leaned over and held her hand, "Thank you for telling me that story."
"It's all good." She sniffled.
After dinner, she walked back to the School for Evil and I walked back to Good, and into my dormitory, where I practised sword fighting techniques with my mate, Alexander. Then, a pigeon flew through the window, holding a letter with Camelot's crest on it. I put my sword in its sheath.
"Sorry, I have to read this letter." I told Alex, who also put his sword away.
"All good Theo." He replied, going to sit on his bed.
I took the letter, and sat on my own bed, reading it.
Dear Theo,
Rose sounds great, but trust me if someone is placed in Evil, they are definitely Evil. I learnt that lesson myself when I was in school. If Lara bothers you, ignore her, but I can tell you that you probably did kill a mogrified child like I did in school. In my advice, stay away from Rose, she is no good.
You're more like me than you think.
Love,
Father
I threw the letter, disappointed in what my father said. I refuse to be anything like him. There was no way I will stay away from my princess.
Chapter 16- Agatha: The curse
I paced in the room, still wearing the gown from dinner with the King and Queen of some kingdom I forgot the name of. Instead of sharing the same stress, Tedros laid on the huge bed, staring at the ceiling.
"What do you think it means?" He asked.
"It means that Sophie indeed cursed our son when he was an infant after all." I replied, looking sternly at Tedros.
"Why don't you ask her?"
"That won't do anything. She did tell me that she would need to curse my first-born child since it's in storybooks and all, but I thought she meant it as a joke. But I doubt that it was a harmful curse since Sophie isn't like that."
"But what curse could it be?"
"Would you stop asking questions and just help me! I'm trying to stop our son from making mistakes because of some stupid curse!" I yelled, but instantly regretted. Tedros got up, walked over, and held both of my hands.
"Don't worry. It'll be fine. I reckon it's just a generational repeat curse, judging by the letter he sent me, usually only lasting until the victim is 18. All it does is make Theo repeat the life of one of us, but with slight changes. That's why he's making similar mistakes to the ones that I made in school, like thinking a witch is a princess, a princess a witch. But it doesn't only effect Theo, but everyone else who is in the story, like I bet those two readers Lara and Rose are trying to get back to Gavaldon, just like you and Sophie did." He said, smiling at me softly.
"A generational repeat curse?" I asked, and then it sunk in. Theodore will just go along the same path that Tedros did to finding true love, but when he turns 18, he will be free to his own choices. I laughed a little. "I'll write a letter to Sophie."
Tedros smiled, and we embraced, warm with the happiness that our only child will be fine.
I hope.
Chapter 17- Rose: Study Hard
After the unlocking, where we get our finger glows unlocked, I decided that in order for me to get into the trial by tale, I would need to be top of the class, like Theodore, so that we would both be in the forest earlier than anyone else, enough time to find each other and team up.
So, I have been trying to excel at every class, including uglification. In curses and death traps, I came first to Dean Sophie's surprise, making a spectacular unopenable kidnapping sack. In uglification I made a huge black wart grow on my nose and then disappear at will. In henchmen training I managed to get a troll to let me cross its bridge, and in special talents I produced a witch scream that made everyone's noses bleed. And in history of villainy, I named all the important events in the Tale of Sophie and Agatha. I came out of all my classes for a month or two as top villain, but I still was a princess through and through.
The trial by tale was coming up soon, and at lunch I was talking to Theo about our plan.
"I've been coming first in all my classes, so you will need to as well." I told him.
"Already done that, I'm just on top of the leaderboard, a couple of points away from your friend." He replied.
"Good! Now we need to continue this, and when we are released into the Blue Forest, we find each other." I said.
"Easy." He says.
We gaze lovingly into each other's eyes, and then go off to class.
Chapter 18- Laralisa: Trial by Tale
Evers and Nevers gathered around their entrances into the Blue Forest, participants in the trial wearing special uniforms and practising. Nevers practised spells, Evergirls practised their chirps and squeaks, while Everboys practised sword fighting and shooting with bows and arrows. In just a couple of minutes, Theodore and Jennice would be entering the forest. Unfortunately, Rose's place had fallen to 3rd after a couple of mistakes in curses and death traps. I was second, going into the maze with Aaron, and so on, each pair entering the maze.
After Theodore and Jennice enter, I walk over to the never side, hoping to talk to Rose. She sees me and walks towards me.
"Rose, when you enter the maze, go to the tulip garden, and mogrify into a tulip. I will meet you there. I told Theodore the same thing, but he rolled his eyes and muttered." I said.
"Great. What's the spell?" she asked. I gave her a piece of paper.
"It's on there. Please don't go anywhere else." I tell her, giving her what I hope is a helpful smile. She takes my hand and squeezes it gently before we go our separate ways.
Before I enter, there is a new rule that both Evergirls and Everboys may have a weapon, so I chose a sword.
It was my turn to enter the maze. I walked through the gate of trees, which closed behind me when I entered the forest, impenetrable.
Surprisingly, I wasn't worried at all. Instead, I watched as Aaron ran in the opposite direction, and made my way to the tulip garden. I bent down and placed my sword out of sight. I grabbed a petal, and summoned emotion to make my finger glow; it glowed gold. I placed the petal under my tongue and said the spell. Immediately I shrank and turned into a tulip.
There, I waited for Rose.
Chapter 19- Rose: Sleeping Willows.
The second I entered the forest I ran as far as I could from Ella. I tripped over roots and branches, stumbling whilst I tried to find my way to the tulip garden like Lara had said. I entered a small grove of willow trees and- wait – Willow Trees? As in, sleeping willow trees? I began to feel drowsy but alarmed. Tired, I tried to move, but I only managed to crawl a couple of metres before collapsing as my vision went fuzzy and my body numb.
I didn't know how long I was laying there, but I finally opened my eyes. The leaderboard said that there were still 10 people in the forest; Lara, Theodore, Jennice, me, Gertrude, Aaron, Ella, Alex, Felix, and Melantha. 5 Evers and 5 Nevers. The other 10 have left, by dropping the surrender flags. I quickly got up, checked where the moon was and decided that I needed to hurry to the tulip garden. Avoiding the pumpkin patch, I made my way to where Lara had told me to meet her. I gazed over the brightly coloured tulips, whispering Lara's name. Then I heard a whisper back.
"Rose! Over here!" a golden yellow tulip infront of me said. The tulip shook its leaves. Lara. I quickly summoned my finger glow and took a piece of paper out of my hand, said the spell, and shrunk to the size of a tulip. My skin went green, and my hair floated up and turned into a pink tulip bud. I was now a flower.
"We should be safe until sunrise now." Lara whispered to me.
"Are you sure Theodore will come?" I asked her.
"He should, but if he doesn't it just proves my point further that he is a selfish idiot. I told him that he would meet you here, but instead he thinks he can find you on his own." She replied. I could hear the sense of annoyance in her voice.
Together we waited for ages, as names began vanishing off the board, until there was 4 people left in the forest. Theodore, Jennice, Lara, and me.
"The sun should rise soon." Lara said looking up at the night sky.
"Theo still hasn't come." I pointed out.
"Well, he should." She said.
He better.
Chapter 20- Theodore: Broken Heart
Wounded and bleeding, I stumbled through the turquoise thicket, finding the blue brook. I laid down on the floor, breathing heavily.
"Rose." I mumbled, trying to ignore the pain. Earlier, I had fallen into a pack of killer rabbits and then 3 Nevers were chasing me using unapproved spells. My eyes found the leaderboard, which told me that Rose was still here. But where was she?
"Rose!" I yelled. Then I heard a rustling behind a bush. I struggled to sit up. "Rose?" I wondered out loud. Instead, a witch with greasy long hair and hundreds of piercings appeared, her belt around her waist armed with silver daggers. She took one out and slowly ran her finger over its lethally sharp tip. To my horror, she smiled at me, her yellow teeth gleaming in the moonlight.
"Don't worry, I'll tell them that it was an accident. I didn't mean to kill you. I'll tell them all how you fought heroically before begging for your life like the dog you are." She sneered.
I stumbled to get up, but she threw a knife which cut through my shoulder and pinned me to the ground. The witch came closer, then pinned my other shoulder to the floor as well. I tried to hold in my screams. Then, I kicked my legs and struggled, and she plunged another dagger into my stomach. I let out an almighty scream, and she smiled, her eyes lighting up with the pleasure of seeing my blood drip onto the blue grass. That's when I noticed the red surrender flag sticking out of her boot. In one swift movement, I grabbed it and threw it to the ground, and she disappeared in a shower of red sparks, 'Jennice' disappearing off the leaderboard. I slowly pulled out the knifes in in my shoulders and stomach, stripping off my bloodstained shirt and tying it tightly around the wound in my stomach. Then, with a huge amount of effort, I made my way through the pumpkin patch, remembering what Lara had said about the Tulip Garden. As much as I didn't trust her, Rose did, and she was probably waiting for me there.
I walked through the pumpkin patch, and then I heard something rustling in the pumpkins, I turned around, and standing before me was a grim reaper with my father's face. He brought down his scythe down on me, and I dodged it just in time. I looked up at the reaper, seeing my father's blank face on it.
"Father, please!" I begged, forgetting what the reaper was, mistaking it for my father, King Tedros, disappointed in me for not being like him. The reaper swung its scythe down again, just missing my heart. The first chance I got; I ran. I felt guilty for not fighting like a prince, but I didn't have my sword, so I couldn't take on a reaper with my fists. I spotted the tulip garden. Rose I thought, she would be there, she would help me.
Chapter 21- Lara: The Winner
"Rose!" I whispered.
"What?" she whispered back.
I had spotted Theodore limping and trying to run out of the pumpkin patch before collapsing near a tree.
"Rose." I heard him mumble softly. "ROSE!" he yelled with all his might, tears spricking in his eyes. It was obvious that he felt betrayed. He was bleeding heavily.
My tulip nudged Rose's. "Help him!" I whispered. Then, I watched as a huge grim reaper appeared, scythe at the ready. Theodore stared at it in horror. Rose looked just as terrified, her tulip shrinking back. It swung its scythe at his neck, and he dodged just in time. I turned to Rose, but instead of her pink tulip she stood there, and directly looked Theodore, who looked back, relieved that she would help him. I was relieved too. Instead, she pulled out her red surrender flag, and said softly, "I'm sorry Theodore. But princesses don't save princes, surely you know that." And the flag hit the ground, simultaneously making her disappear and her name disappearing on the leaderboard. Theodore looked horrible now, about to cry as he relived his last breathe before the reaper threw its scythe down on his heart…
I quickly mogrified back and grabbed my sword, launching myself between Theodore and the Reaper, and the clash of steel echoed through the Blue Forest. The reaper turned and looked at me.
"Quickly, Theodore! Throw your surrender flag to the ground and get yourself some help!" I said to him, keeping my eyes on the reaper who stood still.
"You- you saved me." He stuttered, shocked.
"Quickly!" I screamed as the reaper's weapon just missed my foot.
"I won't leave! You saved my life and I'm not a coward." he yelled, struggling to get up.
"Please, Theodore. You're in pain…" I began but I stopped as the reaper tried to cut my neck off, leaving a deep scratch on the side of my neck. Blood trickled down onto my shoulder. Before the reaper could hit me again, I plunged my sword into its heart and then cut off its pumpkin head. Breathing heavily, I turned to Theodore.
"Thank you." He whispered. "You deserve the extra points." Before throwing his white surrender flag to the floor and disappearing. I was now the only person left in the forest, and with this, I magically transported back to where the Evers were camping out. Professor Dovey beamed and held up my arm. "We have a winner!" she yelled happily. The Evers cheered. Then everyone fell into silence when they saw Theodore limping towards the Nevers camp. He jabbed his finger at Rose, glowing gold.
"You left me for dead!" he spat. "We were meant to work together!"
"I'm so sorry Theodore- but like I said- princesses don't save princes, it's the other way around…" but before Rose could continue, Theodore swerved around with his finger at me, heaving breaths.
"Then why did she save me?" he fumed.
Everyone was silent, before Rose started to speak.
"I-I'm sorry…" she said.
"No. We're done. You were a witch all along, in the right school." He finished, storming of to the good castle. About to cry, Rose turned to me, and screamed, "IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT! I'M NEVER GOING TO BE FRIENDS WITH YOU AGAIN!" and ran to the Evil School, sobbing. All eyes went to me, confused and shocked.
Chapter 22- Rose: You made me like this
I entered the dormitory and shut the door, and saw Jennice, Gertrude and Millicent staring right at me.
"Teaming up with the prince didn't work?" Gertrude asked.
"No." I whispered, tears springing to my eyes again.
"Didn't think so." Jennice said.
There was silence.
I walked over to the window, seeing my reflection. I snatched a dagger from Jennice "Hey!" she yelled before I cut my hair. It was so short it lined up with my nose. I smiled and turned around, seeing all three witches gaping at me.
"What? I'm embracing my inner evil just like Professor Manley said." I say, smirking.
"Why?" Millicent asked, biting her fingernails.
"Because he did this to me." I said, jabbing my finger at the Good School. "And now he will pay."
So much for being a princess.
Chapter 23- Lara: The coffin
It had been a couple of months since the trial by tale, and both schools had been buzzing about the circus of talents, which was happening in February.
I was on my way to surviving fairy tales, where Yuba waited for us in the Blue Forest.
"Today, we will turn the Evergirls and Nevergirls into identical princesses, and the Everboy must kiss the hand of the one that they are drawn to the most." Yuba said. "Today we will be doing this task with 3 groups instead of 1. Neverboys, please stand aside." The Neverboys grumbled and walked back, whilst the Nevergirls, Evergirls and Everboys stepped forward.
"Everboys, turn around and close your eyes." Yuba said, and then he concurred identical glass coffins. "Girls, choose a coffin and get in." I walked to the last coffin on the left, crawled inside and waited. Then, I felt my nose grow and my chin poke out, my ears grew forward, my body enlarged, my hair went extremely fuzzy and my Evergirl uniform melted away into a horrid blue dress. All the other girls looked the same. Then we all fell asleep.
Chapter 24- Theodore: Mistakes
"Everboys! You may now turn around!" Yuba said, stamping his staff on the ground.
I turned, and began to walk up and down, inspecting the coffins like the other Everboys. Then I realised that I felt drawn to the one to the left at the end, the one who felt truly good. Confidently, I approached the coffin and opened it, then I took the girls large hand and kissed it, then dropped it quickly. Laying in the coffin was now Lara, who stared at me wide eyed and disgusted. I quickly walked away from the coffin and to where the other Everboys were standing who had kissed their maidens already. A few looked dishevelled, others looked pleased and somewhere confused.
Not as confused or dishevelled as me.
Lara? As in, she's a witch she belongs in the Evil School, Lara? The one who is always frowning, hates everything princessy and confessed herself that she hates boys?
I shook my head; it was definitely a mistake. An accident.
That shouldn't have happened.
Chapter 25- Good Deeds
I made my way to class again, alone. I entered the candy covered classroom, took a few sugar plums, and stuffed them in my mouth before sitting at my desk.
Professor Dovey entered the classroom and gave us all a piece of paper.
"This is a paper test that will see how much you are prepared for the dance. I will mark them before the end of the lesson." She explained.
I flipped through my test, answering every question really quickly. The questions were things like;
Question 1
You realise that your best friend has horrible smelling breath, but her date to the snow ball is the person that you wanted to go with. Do you:
Offer your friend a piece of sweet liquorice without telling them about their breath
Don't tell her – she deserves it!
Tell her immediately
Tell her date and try to bribe him into going with you
For this question, I circle c, and side note: this shouldn't be a problem since I don't have any friends.
Question 2
In the middle of the dance, a wounded dove falls and lands in the middle of the dance floor. Do you:
Kick the dove to the side and deal with it later
Leave your ball date in the middle of the dance to save the bird, even if it means embarrassing him
Ignore the bird and run the risk of it being trampled
Scream and stop the dance
I circle b, and write next to it, unless you don't have a ball date, then you won't embarrass anyone but yourself.
I answered the rest of the questions with the same spirit.
"Oh my! It is just as I feared!" Professor Dovey announced, finishing marking the tests. "You Evergirls have become self-absorbed and only care about yourselves! You should be ashamed." The girls all chatter as our tests magically fly to our desks, now graded. I shove mine to the side, but then I realise what is written in the top corner. 100% see me after class.
I waited for everyone to leave, and then I took my test and approached Professor Dovey.
"My dear Laralisa, you remind me of my old student, Agatha. She too believed that she would never get a date to the ball, let alone marry a prince, and look where she is now! The Queen of the most important and looked-up-to kingdom in the endless woods!" she said, smiling. I avoided eye contact with her, and she continued.
"Unlike the rest of the class, your test showed me not only have you got a pure soul, but you don't believe you can get a date to the ball. How is that when you are Good's best student? How is that when you are so good you became friends with a witch? Now tell me, Lara dear, why is it that you believe that you are not a princess?"
I took a breath, and muttered, "Because I'm ugly."
Dovey spoke, "Sorry dear?"
I said louder, "Because look at me! I'm ugly!"
"Ah. But you are not ugly, Lara! You are beautiful at heart, inside and out…" but I interrupted her.
"I'm not! You can say these things all you want but I will never believe it because it's all lies."
Dovey concurred the same mirror from the time she was in my dormitory.
"Look in the mirror Lara and say it again." She said sternly, but once again I turned away and shut my eyes. "What are you afraid you'll see?" she asked.
"I'm scared to see the ugly witch that I am and that I have been called throughout my time at school- I'm not a princess and I will never be one." I sobbed.
"You sound just like Cinderella, and once I gave her a new face and dress and shoes, she was off to the ball in a heartbeat." She said softly.
I looked up. "So, you can make me beautiful?" I asked her.
"Of course, I can! Am I not the most well-known fairy godmother in all the woods?" she beamed and pulled out an ancient-looking wooden wand. "Now, close your eyes and make a wish."
I shut my eyes, and said quietly, "I wish I was beautiful."
"Louder, dear. I can't hear you!"
"I WISH I WAS BEAUTIFUL!" I yelled, and then there was silence. I opened my eyes and saw Professor Dovey flicking her wand around and frowning.
"Oh dear, it didn't work. I guess that's what happens when your wand is that old. Oh well, lets do it the longer way." She said, and with a flick of her wand we were in the Groom Room. She got onto her tiptoes and whispered into the ears of three, tall, neon nymphs who all looked at me.
That was the last I remembered before I blacked out.
Chapter 26- Rose: Broken Promises
I had shortened my uniform, styled my new hair, and smirked as I walked through the tunnel of trees, 3 witches behind me, Jennice, Millicent, and Gertrude, all wearing the same styled Evil Uniforms. They stopped as I cat walked over to where Theodore was sitting with Ella. I sat down next to him and smiled.
"So. Have you told everyone yet?" I asked him. Theodore stood up and looked me in the eye.
"Told them what?" He said.
"That you're taking me as your princess to the snow ball! You promised, remember?" I said grandly, making sure everyone heard. Theodore looked uncomfortable, as all the Ever's stares pierced into him.
"What?" Ella said, the Evergirls backing behind her with their hands on their hips.
"I can't believe you'd do that." Alexander said, Everboys crossing their arms.
"I-I-I don't know what you're talking about." Theo stuttered.
"Oh, but you do. You know exactly what I'm talking about." I said, smiling viciously. The Nevergirls cackled.
"I'd never take a witch like you!" Theodore yelled, hand reaching for his sword…but I whipped out my pink-glowing finger and magically made it fly into my hand, then pointed it at him.
"But you promised, Theo. And you know what happens to princes who break their promises." I snarled, pressing the sword slightly into his neck.
"I didn't! I'd never say something like that to a witch!" he insisted, narrowing his eyes. I took the sword and threw it to the side.
"Ah so that's how you want to play. Well, now lets see how you feel once I make my move." I sneered, then sashayed out of the clearing and back into the Evil with the 3 witches behind me.
"Don't worry Rose. You don't need him anyway." Jennice said.
"What's your move?" Gertrude asked.
"We attack the Good School when the sun goes down. Got it?" I say.
The Nevergirls nod.
"Good." I said, smiling.
Theodore is going to pay for breaking his promise.
Chapter 27- Lara: Beautiful
I opened my eyes, and immediately felt my face stinging. I ran my fingers over my now smooth, grease free face and felt a small, princess nose. I looked around and saw the Groom Room a mess, like a tornado hit it. Nobody was inside.
I had to get to a mirror. Now.
I quickly raced down the halls, catching the Everboys staring at me, then past Ella, who dropped her pocket mirror and it shattered. I smiled brightly, and Yasmin walked up to me.
"How did you do it? Black magic?" she asked, staring at my new face.
"Nope." I said, brushing past her.
Now I was excited as I quickly went down the stairs and all the Evers stared at me. I was finally beautiful! I whipped around the corner and bumped into someone. Theodore. Sweat glistened on his face and when he saw me, he suddenly looked self-conscious.
"Hi." He said.
"Hi." I said back. I brushed my hair over my ear.
"Sorry. I-I need to take a bath…" he said, going red.
He quickly went up the boy's tower.
What just happened? Theodore just looked at me like I was a girl! Like I was a princess!
Whatever Professor Dovey did must have made a big difference. I ran down the corridor to the mirror, closed my eyes- and then opened them.
I looked the same. The same old girl who wanted to be a princess but never could- so she took to being alone instead. But then again, all those people looked at me like I was beautiful, so what changed? That's when I realised. It was a face that nobody had recognised because it was happy. A face people thought was beautiful because it was smiling.
I've been beautiful all along. Then my smile came back, bigger, brighter, and I noticed Professor Dovey behind me in my reflection. I whipped around and saw her, beaming.
"Just like Agatha, you have found that you are beautiful. What did I tell you?" she said.
"Thank you." I say. No words could describe how happy I was.
"No problem, dear. Now go on, off to class."
I still couldn't believe it.
I'm beautiful.
The good news was that Yasmin was my friend again, and Ella ditched her for it. She said sorry for leaving me like she did earlier, and I forgave her. We sat together in beautification class and Professor Anemone walked in.
"As much as I wanted to do further beautification, Professor Dovey insisted that we do more ball practise. So, I want you to find a partner, and take turns doing the following. One person will get down on their knees and ask the second person, who is closing their eyes, to the ball. If the second person is truly good, and they will have a prince for the ball, they should see like a milky white silhouette infront of them while their eyes are closed. Now go!" she told us, before sitting at her desk.
"You can be person 2 if you would like, first." I say to Yasmin.
"Sure." She replies and closes her eyes.
I get down on my knees, "Yasmin of Maidenvale, will you be my princess for the ball?" I ask, pretending to be a prince.
Then, a smile appears on Yasmin's face. She looked so happy, then she opened her eyes.
"I did it! I saw the silhouette!" she beamed, as we swapped positions.
"Good job!" I say, closing my eyes. Yasmin gets on one knee.
"Lara of Woods Beyond, will you be my princess for the ball?" she asks, pretending to be my prince.
With the last word, I feel as if a bright seed is placed in my soul, filled with happiness, warmth, and goodness. Then this seed turned into a white silhouette, down on one knee.
"Oh my! Lara what a beautiful smile!" Professor Anemone gushed. Everyone looked at me.
It was as if that seed planted something inside of me, something I wished I had all my life, not beauty, but self-love, and the excitement of being a princess at a ball.
Chapter 28- Rose: My Nemesis
I couldn't go to classes all day, and neither did my roommates, since they were looking after me. I had a fever, and I was tired all the time. That night, I had a dream.
I was tied to a stake, crying, but nobody listened, as they burned me alive, then I fell for ages, screaming, until I hit the floor. I looked up, and felt excruciating pain, infront of me was a person with a milky face, I couldn't tell who it was, but I hated them. It was their fault I was feeling this pain.
I woke up and tasted blood. I ran my fingers over my face and felt a wart. A WART? My eyes jolted open to Dean Sophie and the witches standing infront of me.
"Obvious symptoms of a nemesis dream." Sophie said, studying my face.
"But doesn't that only happen if the Storian starts a story about you?" Millicent asked.
"Duh. But I haven't seen it yet because I was in Camelot with Agatha." Sophie explained.
"Wait. So, I'm definitely not a princess?" I asked.
"Definitely not." Sophie said, leaving the room.
I looked at Jennice.
"The attacks? How did they go last night?" I asked.
"Good. We released rats into the castle." She informed.
"Eh. Good enough. Tonight, we will release bugs. Evergirls HATE bugs." I say.
"Make sure you stay in bed." Gertrude says, placing an ice pack on my forehead.
They left the room, and I pondered my dream.
Who was my nemesis? Who grows stronger as I grow weaker?
There was only one person I could think of.
Chapter 29- Lara: The attacks
The attacks have been going on for weeks now, and the Everboys had been given permission to patrol the outside of the castle for intruders. Nobody knew who was behind the attacks, but I did.
That evening, whilst everyone was in the supper hall, I crept across to the halfway bridge. There I bumped into an invisible barrier and fell backwards. It reflected me.
"Good with Good, Evil with Evil, now back to your tower before there's upheaval." My reflection said.
"I need to see a friend." I say to my reflection.
"Good doesn't have any friends with Evil. Evil is only friends with Evil." It replies.
"But if someone from Evil is friends with me, does that make me Evil?" I ask.
"No, your in Good." It says.
"But you said that Evil is only friends with Evil. So, my friend is Evil, that makes me Evil." I finish.
The reflection thinks for a bit.
"Definitely Evil." It decides.
I reach out infront of me. No barrier. Quickly, I run into the school for Evil, up the corridors and towers, searching for any sign of Rose. Then I saw a door that had an old image of a princess graffitied on it. Rose's room. I open the door and see Rose talking to 3 other witches. She looks to me.
"Lara. What are you doing here?" she asked.
"I know you're behind the attacks, Rose." I say.
"Oh, ok. What are you going to do about it?" she sneers.
"Rose, I'm not here to argue. Why are you doing this?" I ask.
"Because Theo did this to me. I'm having nemesis dreams. Only witches have nemesis dreams, which means that I'm no longer a princess because of what he did!" she yells. "And I'll keep doing these attacks until he takes me to the ball!"
"Rose…" I start, but Rose interrupts.
"No, Lara. I'm Evil now, and Evil attacks." she sashayed out of the room, Jennice, Gertrude, and Millicent staying put and doing work. I decide to follow Rose.
She walks through the dark corridors of Evil and I follow her quietly. She turns a corner and enters a room that has "Doom Room" written on the door. I gulp and follow. In the middle of the room is a pit with churning water. I watch as Rose jumps in and just manages to exit through a large sewer pipe before the water went over her head. Terrified, I take a breath and jump.
With a splash, I land in the water. I immediately realise that the current is super powerful, but, luckily, I know how to swim. Wet, I climb into the sewer pipe and follow Rose, and then she whips her head around.
"I knew you'd follow me." She cackled.
"What do you think you're going to get from attacking Good?" I ask her.
"He promised he'd take me to the ball! I won't stop until he agrees to it!" she said, "Who is he taking?"
"Apparently the Everboys made a pact to not ask who they want until the circus. The Evergirls are going crazy about it, but I don't see what the big deal is." I say.
Suddenly a loud rumbling comes from behind us.
"What is that?" I ask Rose.
"The waters are coming!" she screams and tries to run.
But the waters were too quick, flushing past our heads, wiping us out.
I wake up, wet, and my legs are burning and sore. I can't get up. I look around desperately for Rose, but she isn't there. Now, instead of the sewerage pipe, we were washed out of the school, with no entry. I shut my eyes, ready to black out again…
"Are you alright?" asks a familiar voice.
I groan and open my eyes. Kneeling beside me was Theodore.
"What happened?" he asked. "Lara?"
"I…followed Rose…sewerage pipe…flushed out of the school…" I managed to mumble.
"So that's how she's been attacking the school! The sewerage pipes." He realised, then he grabbed my hand to pull me up.
"Thanks." I mumble, but before I could walk off, he stopped me.
"You are in no state to walk! Look at your legs!" he said.
"What do you…" but before I finished, I looked at my legs, which were red with blood, bruised and scratched, and then I fainted, and Theodore caught me.
Chapter 30- Rose: Finally
I got up, looked around, and couldn't see Lara. Then I saw a silhouette approaching the gate, Theodore, carrying…Lara? She was bloodied and bruised, and she was asleep. Quickly, I rushed infront of him.
"Give her to me, Theo. I'll look after her…" I began.
"No, I've had enough of you and it's your fault she's like this. I am going to take her to Professor Dovey and tell her exactly who's behind the attacks." He said, about to brush past me.
"Please, Theo, I'm her best friend!" I pleaded. I felt guilty that this happened to her, I needed to do a right to stop all my wrongs.
Then Lara opened her eyes.
"Put me down, Theodore." She said.
"Are you crazy? Look at the state of you! What if you faint again?" he said.
"Put me down." She persisted.
Grumbling, he let Lara down, and I rushed towards her and hugged her.
"Lara!" I gushed, "I'm so sorry! I'm a horrible friend, this never should have happened…I was so angry, and I just didn't think and now look at this mess!"
But she was looking at Theo.
"Take her to the Snow Ball, you did promise her." Lara said.
"But…she's a…I thought…" he stuttered, but Lara spoke again.
"Look how much you've hurt her. Just take her to the ball! Look past the Evil and see the Good like I have!" Lara said.
I looked at Theo, who walked slowly towards me, surrendering to the fact that he did, indeed, promised. I put my arm around him and smiled, whispering his name, and together we walked to the gate, Lara trailing far behind.
Chapter 31- Theodore: The hag
I surrendered to Rose, no matter how much I didn't want to, because I did promise her. But when we approached the waters and I looked at the reflection, instead of beautiful Rose, I saw an ugly hag. But when I looked at Rose beside me, smiling, she wasn't a hag. Then I looked back at the reflection. Still a witch. I shoved her away, and scooped Lara up into my arms, who looked shocked.
"Stay away from us you witch!" I yelled at her and called the fairies. They gathered around Lara and I and flew us to the School for Good.
Chapter 32- Rose: Traitor
I was on the verge of crying as I watched as Theodore carried Lara to the castle, princess in a prince's arms. What a traitor. Stealing MY prince. Fury bubbled up inside me, and I felt warts grow on my face, my bag hunch, and my hair fall out in clumps.
Oh, there will be REVENGE.
Chapter 33- Lara: The circus of talents
It had been a few days since Theodore rescued me, and I haven't talked to him since. I stuck to hanging out with Yasmin and whenever Theodore tried to say something I immediately walked past him. I felt it was strange that he saved me and didn't go with Rose.
"So, what's your talent?" I asked Yasmin at dinner, trying to make small talk so Theodore wouldn't try to interrupt.
"Animal calls. Standard princess stuff, I'm not that talented." She said, "How about you?"
"Remember the thing with the wish fish earlier in the year?" I asked her.
"Yeah?" she says.
"I've been practicing something like that." I tell her.
"Ohhh that's so much cooler than mine." She says, "Hey Theodores coming over."
I look behind me and see Theodore approaching our table and I quickly hide my face.
"Hey, Lara. Will you be at the circus tonight?" he asks.
I look up and plaster a smile, "Yep!"
He smiles back and then walks off.
"What was that about?" Yasmin asks me.
"To be honest, I don't know." I reply.
Later, the good students gathered in one side of the hall, while the evil students gathered inside the other. When I entered, I wore a long midnight blue dress with golden jewellery, and as I walked past the frozen ice sculptures of knights and princesses with animals, all of the boys stared at me.
I sat next to Yasmin.
"Wow. Good job." She says.
"It was all thanks to the Groom Room." I say, and we laugh.
"You know, it doesn't matter how they look at you, no Everboy is going to ask a girl who loses to Evil to the ball."
The leaderboards lit up, and the order of performances was revealed.
Lola vs Daeva
Felix vs Malcom
Louis vs Millicent
Sabrina vs Leila
Yasmin vs Gertrude
Alexander vs Melantha
Hristan vs Aaron
Ella vs Odin
Lara vs Jennice
Theodore vs Rose
Above the stage, floating, was the winner's crown.
Good Lost for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th matches, but won the 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th matches, and it was my turn. I got up onto the stage and lifted my hands up slowly. The souls of the fairies and the wolves guarding the sides revealed themselves, showing souls in evil's uniform above the fairies, and souls in good's uniform above the wolves.
"When you fail, you become a slave to the other side, as it has been for years. Yet, although they are opposite, the fairies and the wolves are still friends. Good and Evil, friends. Something that generations of students have failed to remember, that although we are different, it doesn't mean that we cannot treat each other as equals. Afterall, without Good or Evil in balance, the forest cannot thrive." With that I brought my arms back down and the souls disappeared. Everyone was quiet, and there were students from either side crying a little. Then, they all burst into applause. A light on good's leaderboard lit up, signifying that we won.
Now it was Theodore's turn. But Rose walked onto the stage, and looked over at Theodore, who stopped walking to the stage suddenly. She pointed at him, and yelled, "He lied. He broke a promise, and everyone knows that bad things happen to…" but before she could continue, Theodore spoke.
"Wait your turn." He sneered.
Rose stuck her nose in the air and stood to the side, crossing her arms. Theodore walked onto the stage, drew his sword at Rose, who flinched, before swinging it around in a semi-circle and getting on his knees. He placed his sword on the ground and looked directly at me.
"Lara of Woods Beyond." He said grandly, "Will you be my princess for the ball?" there was silence, all eyes on me.
I always thought that I was ugly, unable to be loved, the most unlikely to be a princess. But I was beautiful all along, and Theodore chose me long before we both knew it, through goblins and coffins, and now he was on his knees, asking me to be his princess.
"Yes!" I said breathlessly.
