Chapter 1: James Potter, Off to Hogwarts

Like everyone else in the family Katherine Potter had the usual brown eyes and a pale complexion. There was however, noticeable differences between her and her older brother James. Whilst James had the facial features of his forefathers, Katherine had her mothers family genetics. Like her mother Doria Potter (Nee Burke), her hair was a very curly dark brown. When Katherine was in a dimly lit room her hair would look almost black, however in the sun her hair showed to be a dark brown with lighter brown highlights throughout.

Katherine was a very quiet child, who often kept to herself. She entertained herself by playing with her dolls, reading books and playing piano. Whilst her brother was always rowdy, attention seeking and quidditch obsessed. Even though the brothers and sisters constant bickering looked borderline hazardous, it was evident that James Potter loved his Katherine very much.

It was 7:00am in the morning when Katherine woke up, to the cheering of her brother. Bleary eyed, Katherine rubbed her face and threw her comforter off; swinging her legs over the side of the bed. Putting on her slippers and robe she walked slowly down the stairs to see both her parents sitting and eating breakfast. Her brother however had discarded his food, he held in his hand a letter.

As she settled in her usual seat next to James, she noticed that her parents were in fact not eating; but staring adoringly at their son with proud looks on both of their faces. Katherine turned to James and took a peek at the letter he was holding. The one detail she noticed straight away was the wax Hogwarts crest on the back.

Without another thought, Katherine turned to her plate which was magicked in front of her by their house elf; it was now full with toast and eggs. She ate silently, whilst she listened to James prattle on about how he would surely be sorted a Gryffindor like his father, and grandfather etc. Whilst rolling her eyes, Katherine's mother noticed, and lightly kicked her under the table. Whipping her head up, Katherine looked to her mother who was inconspicuously shaking her head.

Katherine sighed, thinking how she would finally get the house to herself. She hoped that with James gone, her parents would pay more attention to her. Not that they didn't pay attention to Katherine, it was a different sort of attention. Her parents could not help themselves by throwing in a comment here and there. "Oh, why can't you be more outgoing like your brother"… "Do stop constantly reading and go play outside with your brother". Katherine tuned out whenever they would say something like that, however it still hurt her. Katherine was her own person, and she would not be outshined by her idiot brother.

Whilst James was bound to be in Gryffindor, Katherine knew that she would be destined for another house. Ravenclaw perhaps, like her mother and her grandmother.

Doria sat silently watching Alexandra, thinking about the differences between her two children. James, who was almost an exact replica of her husband, and Katherine who was an exact replica of her aunt. As a mother, she was quite in tuned with her children and their personalities. Her daughter was definitely more jealous, dynamic, intelligent, resourceful and passionate. She definitely had a loyal heart, however she was much more manipulative than James. Always knowing exactly what to say to get her way. Smirking, Doria went back to her breakfast paying no mind to her two children who had now started to argue about who the best quidditch player was.

5 hours later

"Come on Katherine, the foods getting cold, stop sulking in your room and come downstairs. People have already arrived for my birthday celebrations. COME ON!" James said in his happiest voice.

"Alright I'm coming! Stop yelling, you are giving me a headache!" Katherine yelled back. Getting up from her bed, Katherine fixed her light green and pink dress and put on her pink ballet flats.

Yanking the door open, Katherine ran down the stairs in full speed, only to bump into her father.

"Ah, there you are princess, I have a surprise for you"

"It's James' birthday dad, shouldn't he be the one you are giving surprises to?" Katherine asked whilst tilting her head, looking like an adorable puppy. Her mother looking on from a distance smirked, knowing of her daughter tactics. Clearly, Katherine was putting on her usual show; her father as usual oblivious.

Bending down on one knee, Charlus Potter took out a square box and opened it in front of his daughters eyes; which were now as round as quaffles.

"Oh daddy, they are beautiful!" Katherine squealed, jumping at her father; enveloping him in a hug.

Standing back she let her father, put a diamond and emerald tennis bracelet on her petite wrist. Once clipped into place, he went back into the box and took our two emerald stud earrings. Charlus Potter knew his daughter very well. Unbeknown to his wife Doria, he was not completely oblivious to his daughters tactics. No, he would say that he knew his daughter very well.

"There, now you look like a real princess" Charlus said standing up to look down upon his daughter, who was now twirling around in circles in-front of him.

"Princesses wear a tiara daddy" Katherine said giggling.

"Well, when you get married, I promise to buy you a big diamond tiara" Charlus said, whilst opening his arms out to portray how big this tiara would be. Katherine smiled very wide then ran into the other room, which held many friends and family members of the Potters.

Charlus and Doria walked in, looking the picture of elegance. Picking up glasses of champagne, they toasted to their son on his birthday.

"I would like to make a toast" said Mr Potter in the most boastful, proud voice.

"We are gathered here tonight to congratulate James as he turns 11 today. And on getting his letter to Hogwarts. I am sure that he will make us all proud and bring great honour to the family name. To James, our soon to be Gryffindor!"

"James!" everyone sang out unanimously.

As the night progressed, everyone kept getting louder and louder. After dinner, Katherine took refuge in the library; she started reading a first year textbook on Herbology. Almost two hours later midnight struck with the grandfather clock singing out around the house. The party was still in full swing, with children running around in the backyard.

However, the guests finally started to leave once it hit 2am in the morning. Katherine however, was found by her father fast asleep in the library on their chesterfield lounge; book lying loosely from her hand. Picking up his daughter, Charlus walked her to her room and placed her on her bed; pulling the covers up to her chin. Turning around, he closed the door retreating back downstairs in search of his son. Pulling James by the arm slowly, he marched the tired young boy in to his room; repeating his actions by tucking his son in.

Diagon Alley

Ever since James Potter's birthday, he kept a calendar and marked down the days till he would be going to Hogwarts. He woke up one morning with more vigour than he had ever had. It was now exactly 1 week before he was bound for the Hogwarts Express. James rolled out of bed, grabbed a quill from his desk and snuck into his sisters bedroom. Katherine was still sleeping, when James opened the door. She continued to sleep even when James, crawled up onto her bed. He raised the feather on his quill above Katherine's nose and starting waving it onto her nose. Katherine in response started to scrunch her nose, and wave her hand in-front of her face, to try and rid the invisible fly.

Sniffling, Katherine rolled over to avoid this mysterious sensation. James merely giggled and continued with his teasing. After Katherine sneezed, she woke up abruptly and shot daggers at her brother who was now howling with laughter.

"Why did you need to wake me….you have disturbed my beauty sleep" Katherine said whilst crossing her arms.

"Yeh, you need all the beauty sleep you can get" James muttered between his laughter, which died down immediately when Katherine threw her pillow at him.

"Just joking of course" James said whilst shrugging his shoulders. "Anyways, come on, get up! We're going to Diagon Alley this morning. Get up, I want to get there early so we can look at the Quidditch Shop" James said before he ran out of Katherine's bedroom, leaving her to get ready.

Rolling her eyes, Katherine got out of bed and headed into the bathroom. Once she had finished bathing, she walked into an adjoining room which was used as her closet. Katherine looked through her wardrobe and settled on wearing a navy dress with navy ballerina flats and a white cardigan. Katherine walked up to the mirror, admiring her appearance. She looked like a perfect little pureblood girl, with her beautiful face, gorgeous dark curly hair and perfect sense of style.

Katherine was not oblivious that they lived a good life. She had heard many stories about the Potters, and knew only too well that they were a very wealthy family. Their wealth was also improved greatly by her grandfather Fleament Potter, who was an avid potioner, making large sums of money from sleakeazy's hair tonic.

Putting some lip balm on her lips, she decided that she was ready to make an appearance downstairs.

Katherine joined her family downstairs, and decided on pancakes with maple syrup as a little treat.

After devouring her food, she quickly ran upstairs to brush her teeth, then went back into her closet to grab a small bag. Once she had selected once which went with her outfit, she made her way downstairs and took her fathers hand.

Charlus led his family out of the house, and walked to the designated apparition point. Once there, he picked up Katherine and apparated to the outside of the Leaky Cauldron. Doria did the same with James, however as he had a much larger build he simply took a hold of his mothers hand; then they were gone with a pop.

The Potter family popped into a deserted alley, and quickly made their way into the Leaky Cauldron. It was still early, and the pub was only just opening. The barkeep Tom was behind the counter counting a couple of galleons. Whilst there were mops and brooms working by themselves, cleaning the floors. Chairs which were previously on top of tables were now slowly descending to the floor with magic.

The Potters walked right past everything, not giving any notice to their surroundings. They strode with purpose to the back where Charlus opened the wall into Diagon Alley, where the family made their way to Gringotts Bank.

After collecting a sizeable portion of money from their vaults, James began to whinge about going to the quidditch store. Not wanting to spoil their sons happy day, they gladly complied. Most of the stores were only now just opening, therefore James could be seen with his nose pressed up against the glass door of the quidditch shop.

With a jingle of the door bell, the store was now open for business. James ran inside, and made a beeline straight to the newest brooms.

Katherine leisurely roamed around the shop, picking up certain objects to inspect them closer. When she could look no longer, she made her way over to her parents and brother. James was in a heated discussion with his father, begging him to buy him the latest broom. James' broom was quite good, it probably only 3 years old. However, James made the argument of needing the best and fastest broom if he was going to make it on the Gryffindor Quidditch team. Smiling at his son's enthusiasm, Charlus ruffled his sons hair, and handed over the broom to the shop keeper. Once the broom had been rung up, Charlus told the man to take the money straight from his vault at Gringotts. This broom cost much more than what they had taken out this morning. The money they took out of Gringotts was purely to textbooks, a wand and other generic school related items. A broom of this calibre cost more than someones wage for a year. However Potter Snr was only too happy to oblige.

With a ding, the Potters opened the door and left to carry out their other errands. Looking around, Katherine noticed that the alley was now packed full of children and parents. Children were eagerly looking around, with their parents walking behind them holding their school supplies.

Two hours later the Potters were still shopping, with only a couple of items on the Hogwarts first year school list remaining. They had stopped by Pottages to purchase a cauldron when they noticed the long line. All four Potters moaned, and shifted from foot to foot. Katherine pulled on her mothers arm, asking if they could go get some ice cream whilst the boys finished their errands. Agreeing, they waved goodbye to the boys and descended upon Florean Fortesques in due haste.

After purchasing an ice cream for Katherine, and a tea for Dorea, they found an empty table and sat down to observe the other witches and wizards walking past. Swinging her legs, Katherine finished devouring her ice cream; whilst her mother was only halfway done with her tea. After another 15 minutes passed, Katherine started to show signs of boredom. Picking up on this, Dorea told Katherine to go to the bookstore just down the road and to pick out a couple of new books. Perking up at this, Katherine grabbed the gold galleons that her mother was extending to her and ran off.

Florish and Blotts was equally busy, bustling with children and parents. Katherine walked around the store and found the children's fiction section. She grabbed a couple of picture books and decided to find a nice quite nook. She found a nice comfy chair and decided to curl up and start reading. It had been well over 15 minutes and Katherine was lost in her book, when she felt someones eyes on her. Looking up she saw a boy around her age with dark long black wavy hair hanging loosely around his face. He wore very nice clothes which seemed to fit him perfectly. Looking back down at her book, she hoped the boy would leave; however to no avail he continued to stare. After a minute, she snapped her book shut and stood up abruptly, which made the boy flinch.

"If you take a picture it might last longer" Katherine spat, whilst throwing her book back onto her chair and crossing her arms in-front of her chest.

"Why would I want to do that?" The boy asked puzzled.

Sighing and looking pitifully at the boy, she said "Jeez you're thick, it's just a saying. Anyways, why are you staring at me?" Katherine enquired.

With a twist of his mouth, the boy leaned against a bookshelf nearby; and spoke very confidently.

"What? I always like to stare at the prettiest girl in the room".

Katherine furrowed her brow at the boys insolence, and rolled her eyes. Seeing red, all of a sudden a book came flying off of the bookshelf behind the boy which knocked him straight to the floor.

"Now it's my turn to smirk at you, you little twit" Katherine muttered as she looked upon the boy who was now sprawled on the floor with 3 books lying on top of his back.

Getting up, the boy dusted himself off, and had the audacity to smile at Katherine and say.

"Jeez, you're touchy. I suppose that was a bit bold of me, considering I hadn't even introduced myself. I'm Sirius, Sirius Black".

Extending his hand, he expected Katherine to shake it, however she did not budge. And luckily, she was saved by her family rushing into the shop.

"Katherine!" "Sirius" Two sets of parents could be heard yelling in their direction. Whipping their heads, they saw both families striding in their direction. The Blacks looked at the mess on the floor and scrunched their noses in distaste.

Charlus Potter looked at the scene in front of him then back to the Blacks. " Ah, Orion" father said in a friendly tone, holding his hand out for the other man to shake.

"Well, well if it isn't Charlus Potter. It's been awhile…and how is the family" asked Orion. Who only then had just realised that the remaining Potters were only a few metres away. Observing them all slowly, he looked back to Charlus whoc began to speak.

"These are my two children Orion. James, who is the eldest, and my youngest Katherine. Oh, and of course the wife, Dorea. Everyone, this is Orion Black, the head of the House of Black. And this must be the lovely Wulburga Black?"

He spoke straight to the beautiful women who had her hand on her other child's shoulder. Wulburga, was clearly a radiant beauty, with piercing grey eyes, long black robes and black nails.

"What beautiful children you have Dorea" said Mrs Black. Completely disregarding what Charlus had said.

James stood awkwardly on the side, but plucked up the courage to go up to Sirius and extend his hand. "I'm James Potter…." He was cut off by Orion who spoke in a haughty tone.

"Apologies for not sooner introducing my children. My eldest son, Sirius and my youngest son Regulus".

"Hi" Sirius waved and smiled at James.

Regulus stood at his mothers side not saying anything. He did however pluck up the courage to at least smile at Katherine as a form of greeting.

Katherine merely stood to the side, staring at the scene in front of her. It was clear that the Blacks did not like the Potters. Katherine observed them closely, the way that they turned their noses up, and kept from making eye contact with them.

"Well we better be leaving Orion, till we meet again..goodbye" he bowed his head quickly, then ushered his family out of the shop.

Charlus Potter was a man of good morals, and very rarely got upset. However, ever the empath, Katherine could tell that her father was upset. She stood beside him and grabbed his hand whilst they walked along the main street.

Looking at his wife, Charlus muttered "I absolutely despise Orion Black". Not going into any further detail, Dorea merely nodded her head in agreement, and walked along side him.

After completing their purchases, James was now the owner of a brown tawny owl and wand. Both father and son had completed their shopping for the day, and decided to get an ice cream to celebrate. Whilst the girls went into Madam Malkins to purchase some new clothes.

St Pancras Station

Katherine was running at full speed through platform 9 3/4, with her mother trailing right behind her. James was behind them pulling his suitcase, with his father holding his owl cage.

"Oh I'm going to miss you" Was heard multiple time by different mothers saying teary fair wells to their children who were boarding the Hogwarts express.

"Stand there James, let me have a look at you" Dorea asked tearily whilst holding a handkerchief up against her eyes; to stop the tears from falling.

Charlus had a camera in hand and positioned his son in front of the Hogwarts Express. A could of dozen snaps and flashes later from the camera, James had passed his luggage to the train staff and was now saying his final goodbyes to his family. Hugging Katherine, he told her to take care of herself and not get into too much mischief; lest he get jealous of missing out on all the fun.

Katherine merely smiled and nodded her head. She was surprised at the emotions she felt, when waving her brother off. Both her parents were not prepared when they saw their daughter start to cry when the train took off. Once the train was out of site, Katherine started to cry with more vigour. Charlus picked up his daughter and stroked her hair as an act to soothe her.

"Don't worry love, James will be home in no time." And with that said they left platform 9 3/4 making their way back home.
