It was a surprisingly warm fall day, which didn't help Sarah's mood any. She had left the funeral before it even ended, and she still had yet to shed more than a few silent tears. Getting through this day was the hardest thing she had done to date. Sure, the death of her parents had been hard, but they had lived full lives. They never did find out that their darling daughter would unnaturally outlive them all, her other life, or the real reason her and Stephen never had children.
Sarah walked until no one was around, then disappeared only to shorly appear at the park from her childhood. She walked around the park, deep in thought, enjoying the silence. She came up to a bench that was recently added, and sat in front of the pond. After what seemed like hours, Sarah heard someone walk behind her, but she didn't turn around.
"I couldn't stay there any longer," Sarah began. "it just doesn't make sense to stay." The figure behind her took a seat, but remained silent. " We argued the morning that he died. He yelled at me, and told me I should just leave. That the inevitable was close, and going back would be easier on us both." Her shoulders began to shake, but no tears fell. To anyone looking, an older woman was sitting next to an older man. There was nothing strange, just two people in a park.
"He told me our time was over, that he should have left me years ago, instead of him being a burden. He said the day he was unable to fulfill his duties as a husband, I should have gone to my harem of fae in waiting! " Sarah stood, throwing off her shaw, turning to her brother Toby. As tears streamed down her face, she removed her glamour. " Stephen begged me to let him see ME before he died. I wouldn't let him."
"Sarah, it's not your..."
"NO! DON'T SAY IT. BECAUSE IT IS MY FAULT!" Toby stood, slowly, and wrapped his arms round her as the final dam broke in her heart. "My life here should have ended when you were safe in your crib, and away from me. I just bring misery to everyone here." With that she formed a crystal, threw it up in the air and disappeared.
Sarah transported herself to the castle beyond the goblin city, landing in the queens quarters, her quarters. She told the servants to leave her until she called for them, which she did not intend to do. Two days passed and the staff began to wory. At first it was quiet, then the yelling began, then the breaking of glass and furniture. By day three it was quiet again.
Jareth POV
"Sire, she has been in there for days. You must do something. The queen has not eaten or drank in days." Loki stood with anger and rage barely contained. "Then you go!" Jareth sneered. "I assure you I am the last she wants to see right now." He looked down at the scrolls before him. "Jareth, please. Sarah is in pain, you seeing her like this pains you, and don't act as if you are indifferent to her pain." With that, Loki took his sighed, dropping his work, and vanished.
He knocked on Sarah's door, but did it expect a respons, used magic and opened the door. Sarah was not in her waiting room, so he went to her bedroom chambers. There Jaeth found her crumpled on the floor, eyes red, and breathing quickly through her mouth. "Oh Precious. I should have been here sooner." Picking her up, she barely acknowledged his presence. He sat in the nearest chair with Sarah in his arms, on his lap, as he caressed her hair speaking soothing words.
Jareth knew the mortal husband of Sarah had passed, he knew it was coming, but what took him for surprise was when Stephen had even called on him a few days before his death. Sarah had beenin the underground on official business, and Stephen took advantage of that fact. He was weak, the bedroom reeking of illness and death.
Jareth walked up to the grey haired man, looking at his wrinkled faec and hands. They stared at each other in silence when Stephen finally gestured him to sit in a chair that was next to his bed. "You summoned me, mortal?" Jareth asked, not wanting to show how uncomfortable he really was. Stephen sat up, as much as he could without appearing any weaker. "Yes. As you know, Sarah is busy so we have a little bit of time to ourselves. " Stephen never took his eyes off of Jareth, talking slow deep breaths of oxygen from his mask. " You will be happy to know that I'll be dead before the week is up and she will be yours."
The tension could be felt, but he neither would buckle under the pressure. "Sarah is her own person, she always has been, but your death may break her." Stephen held Jareth's gaze, but broke when he heard this. "Sarah is strong, what does she have need of me? She has never needed me." Jareth cleared his throat before he spoke. He didn't feel as if he owed this man anything, but he knew this man...Stephen loved Sarah. And Sarah, much to his distress, loved Stephen as well. "You are wrong, you kept Sara alive, not physically, but inside. The war took so much from her, and the rebuilding, but when she was with you, she was herself. She had a life, a normal life with her family. Sarah was able to take you home to her parents, hve dinners, and holidays. You gave her what I with all my abilities could never do."
They both remained silent, mostly for Stephen to catch his breath. Jareth closed his eyes, listen to Stephen struggle to breathe. " It's your turn now, to give her what I can't or couldn't. Keep her alive, protect her even from herself, and give her a new famly. You know, one with children, a dog, magic, and people to protect. She will want to give up, but you can't let her."
With that, Stephen closed his eyes, dismissing Jareth, and began to breath. "Rest peacefully, I will do as you ask. Goodbye Stephen."
"Sarah, here, take a bite." He fed her slowly, her body to weak to she ate the liquids, she fell asleep in Jareth's arms. Days passed, and Sarah began to regain her strength. A week passed before she left her room. Jareth remaied patient, taking her food, helping her by telling her about his day to day duties. Sarah had yet to speak.
Three weeks passed, when she finally opened up. Jareth was talking to her about Hoggle and how he had the dwarf working on a new section of the garden, one that even the fairies approve of. He said they had come to an agreement about only biting runners and not the inhabitants itself. She began to laugh. "Hoggle will never get rid of the fairies. I'm surprised he let his son mary one.
Jareth looked up, shocked, but turned his head quickly to hide it. Sarah walked up on o him, grabbing his hand. " He's dead. He is really dead." Her lip began to tremble, and tears began to flow. "Yes. He is. I'm sorry." Sarah nodded her hea, as Jaret began wiping her tears, he kissed her forehead lightly. She in turned placed her arm in his, as they both walked out the dining area. "Let's see how Hoggle is doing, shall we?" Jareth returned a smile and walked her to the gardens.
Jareth and Sarah knew her grief was not over, but they were on the path to her overcoming the pain and he would be there for her, even as her world falls down.
I am finally finished with this story! I might have an epilogue or even a Q and A but that's it. Thank you please feel free to leave a question and more importantly a review.
