As soon as we left the palace, the idiot tried once again to apologize for everything wrong he had done to him and asked Tanya to forgive him for being quite disrespectful to her and to Karl, he was absolutely terrified in thinking that either one of them could ask for him to be executed most painfully, and given they were basically part of the royal family, and who Karl's mother was, he would not survive past the day they actually sentenced them to death.
The other problem for him was that as much as he hated to admit it, every single design, every idea, and every project that Karl was currently working on was nothing that miracles, this stuff blew his own projects out of the water, and even as he could not voice his angst about it, he could silently accept that Karl had a vision and understanding that made him a godsent to the Empire. The very few projects that he started working on, and the cost of production and maintenance for military equipment went down so much that the Empire could continue to fight for centuries and it would not deplete their national resources in the slightest.
The fact that I designed a new engine for their trains and a system to actually make scheduling and train routes more efficient was amazing, I used something the size of a bread box, and with it, he knew exactly, every train that was working, what they carried, and even they could know exactly when the train would arrive to the destination, the second part is that thanks to this engine any attempt by the enemy to attack it or derail it was futile, the train was impossible to derail, even if they managed to knock out some of the tracks the train only used them as a route guide, it could continue even if they destroyed the tracks and even destroy bridges.
The enemy could not attack them because no matter how fast they may be to fire their weapons and cast their artillery spells, they would never be quick enough to actually hit the train at all, thanks to these improvements the train could go from one side of the empire to the other in a matter of minutes, what usually took hours if not days. This means they could send in supplies and replacement troops to the frontline so fast that the enemy had little chance to react or even rest.
The second improvement I made was something that caused Tanya and Victoriya to chuckle, it was the way food was processed and stored, that is right, the second project was to improve the quality and sustainability of the food the people of the empire had, new farming and ranching methods were implemented, food lasted longer which lead to less waste, and this made sure everyone in the Empire could afford and enjoy delicious foods, they farmers even built crystal structures that allowed them to grow crops regardless if it was summer or winter. I called these structures greenhouses.
The farmers at first did not want to make changes to something they had done for generations, till I made them a bet, they could ignore what he was saying if their next crop yield was not bigger than any they had in previous years, however they had to follow his instructions to the letter. Some farmers felt insulted that a kid was telling him that, but I told them if they wanted to go out of business that was their decision, but he was going to do this himself, if none of the farmers agreed, and that meant the military would have farms of their won, which means those owned and operated by civilians would no longer be needed.
Seeing that I was not kidding around they accepted and within two months the crops were ready to harvest thanks to the fertilizers and irrigation system I designed. The Empire's food supply was so stable, they had nothing to worry about, and this made the cost of food decrease, which meant more citizens got to eat and be strong, which in turn made for a more effective and productive workforce. The citizens were loyal before but as the Empire began to improve their standard of living, and provide for their needs from education to medical, the gratitude of the citizens translated to troops that would march through the fires of hell if it meant keeping their beloved nation alive.
Citizens noticed the love and care the royal family had for them, and how much they did to improve their lives, this made their former patriotic fervor and turned it into zeal that was never seen before. The third improvement project I had the good doctor deal with however had something to do with the new operational orbs, it was the improvements I suggested for armor and weaponry if others thought that our empire was weak before due to how few resources we could get, they were sadly mistaken, the armor and weapons would improve so much that the enemy would have to actually put some real effort in killing the imperial soldiers, camps, bases, and supply depots had these new guns installed that two people could simply use them and take down entire mage squadrons, these were the weapon platforms I knew as antiair turrets, and given the fact that it only required one person to operate each one of them, four of them could be deployed and manned at every location. The enemy would need to learn that their sneak attacks were no longer viable when two of these turrets took down twelve mage scouts in a single hour.
This made most bases and even cities safe against aerial attacks from their enemies. Much like he had expected the lives of the people in the empire began to improve at such a high rate that the Empire would one day become such a prosperous and advanced nation that it makes the allies wonder how they achieve this. Tanya however while he was doing this began the process of recruiting the members for their special small battalion. She secretly wanted to make the recruitment nearly impossible for anyone to ever want to join it since if nobody joined it she could keep doing this recruitment phase forever, and remain away from having to fight on the frontlines and thus her life was going to be a whole lot more peaceful. Victoriya was working hard to make sure everyone knew of this brand-new mage battalion.
This was something she did simply because she felt that was something that would help her beloved and just from the sheer desire to help Karl, she would be extremely motivated, seeing this made Tanya make her recruitment poster as simple as possible, she simply made this look as patriotic as possible by placing the imperial seal on top and wrote, Mages Wanted. Extremely Difficult battle, Little Pay. Spend your day in combat and unfathomable danger. If you return alive, you will receive honor and glory.
The main problem with her words was that many people would not even look at it or take it seriously, this is a poster to recruit for a specialized fighting force that essentially would be what Tanya and Karl knew as their equivalent of special forces. Victoriya could only comment that this would not draw the attention of many, and those that it actually did attract could be quite problematic to deal with, basically, she was saying that anyone serious and professional would not bother with it, and it would attract nut cases and lunatics like fly are attracted to a pile of shit. So they might actually have to figure a way to screen the applicants out and get rid of those that they both would consider useless.
Tanya began to think of it and realized that if a mage had poor detection skills or was easily fooled by an illusion then the enemy could quite literally fool them into killing their own fellow soldiers using just that, an illusion that made soldiers think they are surrounded by the enemy. It would lead to every single one in their mage battalion pretty much marching to their deaths, and they would be deemed failures, and failure in the imperial military was harshly punished.
So she decided to do exactly that figure an illusion spell that would make the people entering the room think they were getting an interview with a high-ranking officer, a generic-looking older gentleman wearing the appropriate uniform, the illusion had to be intricate enough to be an actual challenge to mages ability to sense and understand magic. She knew that by the time she obtained enough applicants to begin the screening process, she would have plenty of time to do other things. Karl was off doing research to prepare for when the battalion was finally formed and knowing him, he would make improvements for the entire empire, not just the military, so the one thing she feared was, what if he suddenly found her no longer able to stand next to him as his equal or if he found that he no longer needed her.
The very idea that Karl would break off their relationship or even of her losing him was terrifying and bitter for her, so Tanya made sure that would never happen, while she waited for the applications of those who showed interest in joining their unit, she began to push her knowledge and potential with magic into overdrive, she felt that she wanted to create so many spells, from unique and powerful, to spells that could be done by the general public, Victoriya called it going at it as if Spellcraft research was something her life depended on it. "You think this is funny don't you Victoriya, well what will happen when Karl finds that the only thing you got going for you is your looks? In war you could end up getting scarred or suffer burns, what will you do if you no longer have your looks to count on? That is why I am creating my own spells, I am not going to lose him, not now, not ever."
Victoriya asked what are the chances that Karl would ever find women who are more beautiful or skilled than they are? Tanya was not going to let her think that was true, so she decided to mention to her that several goddesses actually showed much interest in taking Karl as a potential lover if not husband, one of which included Aphrodite herself. She told her that she was blessed by the goddess of magic, so since she had that blessing might as well see how much she could accomplish, because if they just sat on their laurels, Karl sure as hell wouldn't, and if they couldn't prove they are as good as him, then he might think of shall we say get rid of the deadwood.
That was all Victoriya needed to hear to understand why Tanya was doing all the things she was, she understood that Karl was in the research facility and he was probably doing the same thing, but in his case using his knowledge and wisdom to improve the technology of the Empire, she also suddenly remembered seeing him return with Tanya from their meeting with the Emperor, but his uniform was different, it almost reminded him what she once saw a member of the royal family wear in a parade.
"Say Tanya, how is Karl related to the Emperor?" That was enough to make Tanya look at her and begin to shake her head, she immediately began to tell her about their meeting with the Emperor in the palace, even how Karl was tested by using the throne's built-in operational gems. "Basically Karl is the grandson of the Emperor, and given the fact there is no other male descendant in his line, it also means Karl is quite possibly the next to ascend to the throne one day, so as Emperor, he will need a tough and capable woman by his side, and considering who his mother is, I say we both need to actually do our best to become as strong as possible because that lady is not someone to mess with or disappoint."
The two of them worked together and talked about their plans for their relationship with Karl, but the thing is, Karl was something that worried them since he was often working for this long, and while they didn't want to admit it, they missed having him near. His projects were very elaborate and required much attention they knew that, and the benefits that the people would receive are immeasurable but that didn't make them miss him any less. As such Tanya kept her mind busy by constantly trying to create new spells or merge existing spells to create new ones. To her, it was easy considering the blessing she received, but to others it might look a bit strange since she looked like she was simply distracted, waving her hands in the air, without them realizing what she was actually doing.
She perfected the illusion and tested it against Victoriya, and sure enough, she was able to see that it was an illusion clear as day, so that means she was both capable and could control her magic to the required level she and Karl needed for the people they would lead into combat, and there was no argument about this because as much as Tanya hated this, the war was not going to end as quickly as she wanted, and Karl much to her chagrin was quite the battle junkie.
She set up the first twelve interviews to occur in the next month, and by doing this she would finish creating the three dozen spells that she was making, it was simple magic but it would be magic to help people with everything from household needs to treatment of wounds on the battlefield. The cleaning, cleansing, and repair spells were not that hard to create, and even less hard to test. If Tanya was honest about this, she would say the healing spells were the real pain, she had to actually injure herself and then use those spells to treat and heal those injuries. It was not exactly fun, but deep down she knew that they would eventually find the need to use these spells, and so she prepared for any potential medical situation they might face in the future.
The more she worked on her spellcraft the easier it became to manipulate the very fabric of these spells and create spells in amazing if not horrible ways, a spell that can heal a person could be used to cause a person to become sick, a spell that repairs could be used to destroy, Magic had both polar sides of the side that creates and the side that destroys. Thanks to that blessing she got from Hecate, manipulating the very nature of spells became something like second nature to her, but the more she did it, the easier it became, it felt like her life was one of those video games kids used to talk about and the more she used that blessing it would technically gain experience and level up. It is a crazy notion but she couldn't describe it in any other way.
I was working on making something that nobody could imagine, I had found a way to embed a spell into a surface and thanks to this I could technically inject my reinforcement spell into it, to me felt like the very beginnings of enchanting, and thanks to me doing so, I managed to reinforce buildings designed for training, these buildings would eventually become the place where our troops did they live fire exercises during their training. Every situation had to be taken care of, Doctor Schugel was doing everything he could to take my designs and ideas, and much to his credit he was doing excellent work in working out the kinks and perfecting my designs. I would sooner kick myself than admit that to him, but we had to work together more and more and while yes he has the capacity for brilliant thinking, his ego is the one thing that keeps getting in the fucking way.
The man is by far so much in love with himself I would accuse him of being Narcissus if we had not actually met that man when we spent that time living in Olympus, the one thing that I am sort of happy about is that apparently, dear old dad is doing a much better job in reigning in and laying some limits on his pantheon, I honestly expected Aphrodite, or my now sister Aries, to show up in the middle of the office demanding that I service their needs. They are beautiful, yes, but I have many important matters that can not be delayed by me fooling around. This is one reason why I returned to the experiment lab where this idiot nearly caused me and Tanya to be burned to ashes, all because of his blasted ego.
I still don't want to imagine how many people he actually caused to die testing that piece of shit, and how many of them he excused their deaths by saying it was user or human error, it was always the fault of someone else, how could he even think of the notion that he was the cause of a particular test of his experimental observation orb. Thanks to Grandpa however his ego has been significantly deflated and he is now working diligently as he should have done in the past. I still can't stand being near him but for the good of the Empire, certain sacrifices must be made, but at the very least my projects and ideas are being implemented now better than when the stuck-up bastard refused to listen to what I was trying to tell him, regardless how many of the things I told him would have helped him.
The new train system was operational and the new traffic signal system was going to be implemented within a week, the construction of the new headquarters for our Aerial Mage Battalion had been finished planning face and in a couple of weeks it should be completed, by the time the new troops join our unit and begin the initial training phase, the place should be ready to house, train, and supply our every need. If anything this place reminded me of the place my first unit used to live in. It was big, spacious, and had enough room to house and feed at least a hundred people, the bathrooms were not anything like luxury in style but as far as the barracks of other units this was a hell of a lot better than what most had to use in the front line camps.
The training equipment was going to be tested by them before building the gym to be accessible to the rest of the army, the fact is I know a lot of people will say such a thing is ineffective or useless simply because they hate the idea that they didn't come up with it themselves, professional angst and envy is not something I am unfamiliar with. After my presence in the lab was no longer needed and checked the construction of our new barracks, I decided to see how the recruitment was going by going to the place where they were doing the interviews, the minute Tanya saw me she asked me to go and meet with the person in a nearby room, I came out of the room pissed off thinking this was some sort of childhood prank, I looked at Tanya and told her there was no person in that room and it had two tables and chairs from a rundown restaurant.
This made Tanya smile and look at Victoriya who for some reason looked dejected if not a little depressed as she handed Tanya some money, wait did they bet something would happen? "That room is the room we are using to weed out the weak, separate the good eggs from the bad ones if you will. We both cast an illusion, if it worked it would look to you like you stepped into a high-class officer's meeting room. But much like I expected from you, the illusion didn't even affect you at all. So tell me Karl what have you been doing that kept you so busy you ignored both of us till now?"
Not wanting to hear any more complaints I took out a piece of paper and showed her the list of projects I had finished and the list of projects that was still ongoing. "See Victoriya I was right, he is not sitting on his laurels and letting the fame of being the grandson of the Emperor go to his head. In truth, I was not expecting you to build something like this, and most people still use the abacus to do math problems, but you somehow built the first-ever computer and even managed to turn the chaos of travel into a well-oiled machine. Are you going to create jet engines for our planes, and build an atom bomb, that can be shot across continents?" The fact that I was quiet was something that made her become quiet for a second before asking if I was serious or just kidding. I looked at Tanya the Jet engine for planes is on the ongoing development list, and the only reason the atomic bomb was not on it, was simple, I still need to enrich the materials, and given enough time and resources I don't see why I couldn't do that.
"The one thing that hinders our development as a nation is lack of resources, that is the one thing that prompts nations to do to war, to obtain territory, and to eliminate competition for those resources. The new engine has removed the need to burn coal as a power source or even fuel, this technology shall spread from military to civil uses down right to the way people heat their homes during winter. Faster and safer distributions mean less spoilage when it comes to perishable goods. The armor I designed will eventually go down to clothing for workers and for civilian life, extend the time people can use clothes, and even prevent staining, rips, and other damage caused by use, I am improving the very concept of transportation technology, and it will cause an economic revolution people don't understand, but will be happy for."
Tanya asked me if I was putting everything I knew to work on this, and without missing a beat I told her indeed I was, I was not working to end the coming war fast, and with furious fervor, I was working on ways to prevent any future wars from happening, no one shall invade the fatherland and think we are lambs ready to be taken and slaughtered, the technology of our nation shall be so much better than anyone can imagine, that the very notion of declaring war against us will seem insane. Vaccines would be developed next, to mention new medical technology and ways to produce medicines.
Victoriya was looking at this and realized this happened because Karl also obtained many blessings from the Greek gods, unlike her and Tanya who only got one blessing Karl obtained multiple, and each one was influencing the other creating something that not even the ones granted these blessings realized. With his knowledge of technology from his time and his ability to understand it so perfectly thanks to the blessings it was quite frightening to see, that the gods exist in a time that could be said they exist in the past, present, and future at the same time, and this gave them the knowledge that surpassed what mortals would even consider miracles.
She realized Karl was pushing technology to the breaking point, and Tanya could see that and realized that now, no matter what the cost or effort, she would never let another woman try to steal Karl away from her and the harem, in his zeal to improve the lives and technology of the Empire, Karl had done things that Doctor Schugel if he let his ego truly understand would build a temple in the name of Karl and become his main worshipper. Tanya told him that as long as he is doing this when is he going to start building the satellites and launch them into space to build their nation's orbital defenses and communication network. She thought she was being cute till I told her to give me at least five years after the war was over and could focus solely on that, and it would be done.
