Addison and Derek's plane heading to New York City took off on Saturday, after 3 p.m. Both of them were filled with excitement and fear, knowing that many things would change after this trip.
They had a five-and-a-half-hour journey ahead of them to get a sense of returning to their city. One they hadn't visited since their dramatic escape and where all their memories of their past life were still intact.
Also, where their family was. They could expect all kinds of reactions to the pregnancy. From surprise, excitement, confusion, anger... shame. Disappointment? You never know what reaction Bizzy might have. Addison had to be prepared for anything.
"I don't understand why you didn't buy first-class tickets, I'm very uncomfortable," she said.
"There wasn't much availability, I told you. Trips require a bit more planning..."
"I don't know how I'm going to endure five hours here, I feel like my feet are already swelling."
"Your feet are fine... try to get some sleep, there are still a few hours to go."
"Sleep? How do you expect me to sleep here? My whole body already hurts! We shouldn't have flown with this airline!"
"Addie... the problem isn't the plane, we both know it isn't..." he said, taking her hand. She looked at him anxiously.
"I know..."
"You need to calm down, everything will be okay."
"You can't know that, your mother hates me, in fact, my mother hates me too," she laughed nervously, "I don't know if my father will care or if he'll be too busy sleeping with some woman 30 years younger than him..."
"Calm down."
"I am calm!"
"Okay... come, rest your head on my shoulder," he said, lifting the armrest in the middle.
Addison wasn't entirely convinced, but she leaned on him anyway. Derek knew how she felt, in fact, she always had a similar reaction whenever they had to visit his family. But this was the first time they were coming with a baby in tow, so the nerves were heightened.
"Try to sleep..." he whispered, gently stroking her hair.
With each passing minute, she fell into a deep sleep. The previous night, she had hardly rested due to thinking about the flight. Derek also relaxed, finally seeing her at rest.

Addison woke up abruptly when the plane started shaking vigorously. The pilot had informed them from the cockpit that they were going through a zone of high turbulence.
"Oh God. I'm scared, it's too much turbulence, Der," she said, placing both hands around her belly.
"Relax, Addie. It'll improve once we leave Montana. It's practically impossible for a plane to crash due to turbulence."
"How can you say that? Can't you see everything shaking? I knew we shouldn't have flown..."
"Look, aerial turbulence occurs due to a natural meteorological phenomenon in which the plane gets caught in disrupted airflow. That's what causes these types of movements, but, nevertheless, it's highly unlikely for the aircraft to crash because of it."
"Why?"
"Let's imagine the plane is inside a jelly container, representing the airflow. You can shake or hit that jelly, making the plane move up and down, or sideways, but it will never fall because the jelly contains it. The same happens with the air, the pressure it exerts on the plane allows it to keep flying."
She stared at him silently. The plane had already stabilized.
"What's wrong?"
"You look so sexy when you talk about physics, I'd strip right now..."
"Addison..." he started to feel a bit nervous.
"Oh, don't mind me, my hormones are out of control," she covered her face with her hands, "if we weren't on a plane full of passengers... I'd have jumped on you by now."
"I don't know if that's a compliment or a threat," he raised his eyebrows surprised. She looked at him again.
"We haven't talked about death yet... what we'll do if I die during childbirth," she changed the subject.
"Addison, what are you talking about? You're not going to die."
"We can't know that, Derek. I could have complications... uterine bleeding, organ prolapse, cardiovascular accident, preeclampsia..."
"You won't have any of those problems. All your tests have come back normal, your blood pressure is fine..."
"That can change on the day of delivery... Derek, if I end up in a vegetative state, I want you to disconnect me."
"Addie..."
"I don't want the baby to grow up with the hope that its mother will wake up and it never happens. I don't want you to bring him or her to see me lying in a hospital bed unable to say anything... oh, Derek. You can't allow that," she said with tears in her eyes.
"Addie, you're not going to die during childbirth. You'll be in good hands that day."
"I don't know if I can trust Sophia."
"Of course, you can... plus, now there's Arizona, Karev... they won't let you die. Please, stop thinking about it."
She remained silent for a while, contemplating what he had just said.
"Okay," she said, unfastening her seatbelt and standing up.
"Where are you going?"
"To the bathroom."
"Again? It hasn't even been an hour since the last time."
"Your kid is compressing my bladder, Derek. Excuse me."

"Do you think I'll be one of those pregnant women whose belly button pops out?" she said, observing her exposed belly.
"I don't know, what's the likelihood of that happening?"
"Well... belly button eversion is very common in the third trimester. It happens to most of my patients..." She was making small circles around the area.
"I think it's adorable."
"Do you think so?... as long as I don't get stretch marks... OH!" she let out a small scream.
"What happened?"
"Derek!" She quickly took his hand and placed it on her belly. "The baby moved!"
"It moved?" he asked with an excited smile on his face.
"Yes! It's the first time I've felt it."
"I can't feel it."
"Oh, come on baby, move again," she said, gently pressing her belly over and over.
"Move for Daddy, Baby Shep..."
"Oh no. If you call it that, it will never move again, Derek."
"It's a cute nickname, at least until we decide on a name."
"Speaking of which... I have some names in mind. What do you think of Olive for a girl?"
"Olive? I'm not going to name my daughter after a martini ingredient."
"Excuse me? That's very ignorant of you, Derek. Besides being the name of an olive, it means peace."
"Did you google that?"
"Maybe... but it's true. The olive tree is a symbol of peace, of triumph. I think if anything, our baby has brought us peace at this moment. That name is perfect."
"Then name her Peace and be done with it, right? Get straight to the point."
"I don't like obvious things."
"No, what you really like is the name of an olive. Or is it the alcohol abstinence talking?"
Addison bit her lip, smiled, and shook her head.
"If it were about abstinence, I'd name it Red Wine. But seriously, Der, I feel like it sounds nice with our last names. Olive Montgomery Shepherd. Isn't that beautiful?"
"You mean Olive Shepherd Montgomery."
"Oh no, darling, you don't want to get into this argument because I assure you, you won't come out unscathed... Oh! There it is again! Did you feel it?"
"I felt it!" Derek exclaimed excitedly.
"I think we should stop shouting, the passengers must hate us," Addison whispered, laughing.
"Let the passengers understand that our baby decided to kick for the first time on a plane. It had to be Addison Montgomery's child."
"It had to be Derek Shepherd's child," she said, raising an eyebrow.
Derek laughed and gave her a small kiss on the lips.

They landed in New York after eleven o'clock at night, due to the time zone difference, they were three hours ahead on the East Coast during that time of the year.
"I can already feel the jet lag," Addison said, resting a hand on her head.
"It's only three hours."
"I can assure you, I feel those three hours in my body. It's been over a year since I traveled this much."
Derek picked up Addison's suitcase and placed it on the ground, then took his own.
"Nancy should be here by now... I'll call her," Derek said.
"Maybe she's running late, or she's with her kids, it's understandable, five kids... God, I'm already exhausted and it's not even outside," she exclaimed, placing her hand on her back.
"I think you're the most dramatic pregnant woman there is."
"Oh, take that back immediately or you won't have sex until the kid goes to college."
"Addie, Derek!" Nancy shouted, approaching excitedly.
"Nancy!" Addison ran to hug her.
"Oh my God, how you've grown since the last time I saw you," Nancy placed both hands on her belly.
"Nineteen weeks on Monday," Derek said, placing a hand on Addison's waist.
"Do you feel it already?"
"Actually... it gave its first kicks today, maybe it was complaining about the seats its father chose..."
"Oh, Derek, you always choose crappy seats."
"I had forgotten what it feels like to have all the women conspiring against me..." he sighed ironically and picked up his and Addison's suitcases.
Nancy and Addison walked behind him, talking about the flight and the baby news.

"What do you mean we're not going to the Brownstone?" Nancy said while driving. She had offered to take them.
"No one has been in that house for a year, it must be full of dust. Now that autumn has started, it must be a nest of dust bunnies and spiders..." Derek said, somewhat uncomfortable from the backseat.
The truth is, neither of them felt ready to go back to their house. It would mean reliving moments that weren't completely overcome yet.
"We'll be staying at The Wallace Hotel... It's near Central Park," Addison added.
"Do you still live in a hotel or did you go back to the trailer?"
"Well, that's one of the things we wanted to discuss at tomorrow's family lunch," Derek said through clenched teeth.
"Oh... okay... Mr. Mystery."
"We're living in an apartment, near the hospital. We moved last week."
"Addison! Don't tell her, she'll think she's privileged to have more information than everyone else."
"Well, actually, I already know more than anyone else. And for your peace of mind, I've been keeping the baby news to myself for a whole month. You have no idea how hard it's been to meet with Kathleen or Liz and not be able to shout to them that Addison is five months pregnant!"
"I appreciate your sacrifice, I know it must have been difficult for a busybody like you."
"How rude of you, Derek. I hope the baby doesn't turn out like you."
"Fortunately, it takes after Addison..."
"Do you have any ultrasounds? I'm dying to see it."
"We have some, for the 'grandmas' refrigerator'..." Addison said dreamily. Nancy didn't understand the reference to Sophia, but Derek did and rolled his eyes.
"Do you know the gender yet? Did it show?"
"No," Addison quickly responded.
"It's shy like its father, huh? Maybe it's ashamed to show what it has..."
Addison couldn't contain her laughter, and Derek got annoyed.
"Oh, Nancy!"
"I didn't say anything, it's open to interpretation. But your wife's laughter confirms certain things..."
"Oh, if Addison spoke..."
"Don't involve me in your sibling fights."
"She's the one who doesn't want to know the gender," Derek said, stirring the fire.
"Are you crazy, Addison? It's your first baby and you don't want to know what it's going to be?"
"Well, it's something deeper than that..."
"I am dying to give him or her things, I need to know what it's going to be. You can't do this, the mystery makes no sense. Four more months to find out what it's going to be? With how long it takes for messages to arrive from Seattle, I won't find out until the end of 2008. Don't do that, look, with Anne I found out in the blood test at 8 weeks. Do you think I would have waited until the 12-week ultrasound to find out? Of course not, my intuition has always told me from day one that it's a girl. What does your intuition tell you? A mother never makes mistakes, well... actually, I was wrong with Louis, but that was because he didn't show himself until week 24, he was the one who took the longest of my children, he has always been a bit slow in everything and I swear we thought it was another girl, but no. I had already bought a few dresses and had to give them to Liz for Ellery, who was born three months later. After that, I have always been right about the other children before it was confirmed. Oh, you don't know, with Lucas, I found out in a revealing dream and...
Addison turned and looked at Derek with hatred. He was smiling, enjoying the situation.

"Nancy's not going to make it easy for me with the baby's gender," she said as she lay on the hotel bed. She had just gotten out of the shower and had her body wrapped in a white towel.
"Between Nancy and Mom, who do you think can be worse? Tomorrow we'll see the final battle," he laughed.
"I hate you."
"You love me," he approached and kissed her cheek.
"Is it really necessary for us to go to the birthday party?"
"Well... I think so, we're already here. We didn't make the trip for nothing..."
"Oh, don't remind me. I'm so tired. My ankles are still swollen from the flight."
"Come, rest your legs here," he placed a pillow by her side.
"Are you going to give me a massage?"
"Yes."
"Oh, suddenly I love being pregnant," she said excitedly.
Derek laughed and began to gently massage her ankles and feet. Addison enjoyed the moment, feeling loved. Once again, she felt that feeling she thought she would never find in Derek. But there he was, making small circles on her legs with a smile on his face.
Yes, Derek loved her.
