He looked at her as the sun rose. "Belita?"
She opened her eyes and smiled at him. "Si."
"I know we've never talked about it, but we aren't really being careful," he said implying that they hadn't used once protection since they had started having sex, unless she was using some kind of protection he couldn't see. Generally he'd be worried about something like this with other women, even if with the girls at Vicki's protection was taken care of, but oddly with her, it had never been the case.
"You mean, me getting pregnant?"
He nodded.
"Is that something that you want?" she asked him.
"I wanted kids, but then time went by, and I never found someone I wanted to have a family with. Eventually, I gave up the idea. But now it's different."
She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath.
"What is it?" he asked afraid that he had scared her.
"I'm sorry," she said as she opened her eyes back up. "There were complications during Samuel's delivery. The doctor's said that it would be difficult for me to get pregnant again. I should have told you, but you never brought it up and so I thought it was something you didn't want."
He caressed her shoulder lovingly. "Difficult doesn't mean impossible, mi corazon. It was a long time ago, maybe things have changed. I mean unless you don't want to have more kids."
"Mi amor, I would love nothing more than to have a baby with you and build a family."
"You mean that?"
"Obispo Losa, you are an amazing man and I love you," she replied, "I'll get an appointment with a doctor and see what they say."
"I love you," he said as he kissed her.
Adelita and Isabella sat outside of Felipe's shop and looked around. Even if it was evening, usually the town was more crowded than it currently was. "You can feel the tension in the air," she said as she drank her coke can.
"Bishop is on edge."
"So is Angel, he's hardly sleeping, keeping a look out on the street, as if he's in commando style."
"And Bishop gave me a gun."
"You think I need one?"
"Do you know how to use one?"
"No."
"Then better not," replied Isabella laughing beside herself.
"You're right. Let's change the subject, this is depressing."
"What do you want to talk about?"
"I don't know anything to get my mind off things."
"Bishop wants us to have a baby," said flat out Isabella.
"Whoa, that's a big step," said Adelita. "Are you OK with that?"
"Yes, but I saw the doctor this morning and he's not very optimistic. At least not if we do it the conventional way."
"I'm sorry Bella. You know they are a lot of other ways to get pregnant."
"I know. I didn't worry because I never thought I'd want more kids or that he wanted any, but now that I know he does and I know I do too, I'm afraid I'll never be able to give him a child."
"Oh, sweetie, Bishop loves you whether or not you have a family together," said Adelita as she placed her hand over Bella's.
Angel, EZ and Bishop parked their bikes in front of them but whereas EZ and Angel dismounted, Bishop stayed on his. He unhooked the spare helmet and put it out in Isabella's direction.
She stood and walked over to him. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing, we're going for a ride," he replied.
"I'll talk to you later," she said to Adelita who nodded as Angel took her spot and EZ went inside the shop to talk to Felipe.
Bishop stopped the bike in front of the Elementary School and waited for Bella to get off the bike. When they had taken their helmets off, he took her hand and led her to the playground. He held the swing for her, and she understood that he wanted her to sit down. Just as he had six months earlier, upon their first encounter in that very spot, he took his cut off and placed it on the edge of the slide before sitting next to hers.
"Is it safe to be here?" she asked.
"We're good, the guys are out patrolling. Besides, I need a moment normality and time with you."
"You don't need to worry about me. I know you're out there making sure we all stay safe."
"Still, I miss you and I hate it when I can't give you my undivided attention."
"I'm not jealous," she replied smiling.
"Do you remember the first time we were here?"
"I do and now that I think back to it, you were flirting with me, weren't you?"
"I was testing the temperature," he said grinning. "I'd only known and spoken to you for a couple of hours, and you had already captivated my heart."
"Smooth talker."
"I meant every word I said that night. It wasn't just words to try to win you over. You are so strong, mi amor. Every day I spend with you I realize how amazing you are. What you did for Letty and are doing for some others, makes me proud. You have never judged me or the club and for that I'm grateful, and God knows I'm no angel. You manage to see past that and see the real me."
"I know your heart, mi amor, I know it's good." She searched his eyes and saw how his eyes searched hers. "You're being very sentimental tonight. Are you sure everything is alright?"
"Yes," he said as he stood from the swing and put his hand out. She took it and stood, slightly disappointed that this fleeting moment was coming to an end as she missed him too. She then noticed that his hand went for his pant pocket and her eyes shot up to his when he pulled out a small jewelry box.
He knelt on one knee and looked up at her. "I could spend the next two minutes telling you how in love I am with you, how I thank my lucky star for bringing you into my life, but I'd rather spend a lifetime telling you that I love you, showing you that I love you and making love to you, Belita. Spend the rest of your life by side. Grow old with me. Marry me."
He opened the box to reveal a black titanium and diamond solitaire ring. She had never seen a ring that beautiful in her life. She knew it was unique, just as her love for him and his for her.
"Yes," she replied as she smiled at him.
He stood instantly, took the ring out and placed it on her finger where it fit perfectly. He took her in his arms and kissed her passionately over and over again.
"You think we'll get in trouble if we celebrate here?" he asked as he raised his brows and looked around.
"Most definitely," she said, "take me home, Bishop."
He took her hand and ran toward the bike, his heart filled with nothing but love for this woman, that had so unexpectedly walked into his life.
