The months went by, and Bishop couldn't help but realize that something was wrong with Isabella. Very often she remained alone, outside of work, and hardly came by the clubhouse when he was there. The fact that he was often at the clubhouse, in the tunnel facilitating the transfer of Galindo's drugs from Mexico to the US, and very often tasked by Marcus, through Miguel's request, to be a part of the transport unit, didn't help at all.
Whenever he confronted Marcus as to why he was the one being sent to do all the work while other of the crew members could oversee it, Marcus had simply replied, having become Miguel's consejero, that it was because Miguel trusted him and as he was President of the Mayans, it was imperative.
"I'm worried about Isabella," he said as he and Angel sat in the tunnel waiting for Galindo's men to arrive with the goods.
"She's giving you a hard time about not being home enough?" asked Angel.
"I wish she were. I don't know, it's like she's somewhere else altogether, lost in her thoughts and no matter what I try, she won't let me in, she tells me she's fine."
"Any idea as to when the change occurred?"
"I don't know, maybe after we came back from Arizona."
"Bishop, that's been like 2 months. Are you sure?"
"Look I can't pinpoint the exact moment, but it's around that time. Has she said anything to Adelita? I know they are close."
Angel shrugged as he looked at his watch. "I don't think so, but even if she did and confided in Adelita, I'm not sure she would tell me."
"Never mind, I'm sure I'm imagining things," said Bishop as he patted Angel's shoulder just as sounds of steps were heard coming through the tunnel.
As Bishop moved further into the tunnel, Angel couldn't help but wonder if it had anything to do with Miguel and their past.
"You seem lost in your thoughts, mi amor," said Emily as she sat in the sofa across from Miguel.
"Just a lot on my mind with what's been going on," he replied, knowing full well he couldn't tell Emily that he hadn't stopped thinking about Isabella or Samuel since they had spoken in the car.
He had doubted the veracity of what she had told him about her father, but after looking through the off-the-book finances of his father and he had indeed found a check made out to Isabella for 1 million dollars. It had pained him deeply to know that his father had done such a thing. Because of him, he had been denied the joy of being a father and marrying Izzie at the time. If he had known, he would have walked away from his father and raised a family with her. He silently hated his father.
"I'm sure you were happy to run into your friend, Isabella, a few months back. Have you reached out to her since?" he asked curious for information as he hadn't dared talk to her since their previous encounter.
"Just a bit, but she's been distant."
"I'm sorry, I know you were hoping to further reconnect. Tell me about her. What was she like growing up?"
"I guess she's not very different than today, she was smart, driven, beautiful. The only reason I got to know her that well, even though she was three years ahead of me in high school, was through EZ."
She stopped talking realizing she had mentioned his name, something Miguel had forbidden her to do.
"Go on," said Miguel, no longer giving a care in the world about EZ Reyes. "How did EZ know her?"
"Their families were close, and they were all great friends from elementary school, until she and Angel started dating in high school."
"She dated Angel Reyes?" he asked in disbelief.
"Uh huh. For at least three years until she left for college."
The more he dug into Izzie's past the more he was surprised. It had therefore been Angel, who had broken her heart before he had come along and fixed it. Only to end up breaking it again.
"They broke up?" he asked knowing part of the story from Izzie.
"Kind of. A year before she graduated, Isabella's father was killed and she changed, it was like something shattered within her. It put their relationship to the test and Angel wasn't very good at handling what she was going through. Then she left for college, never telling anyone where she was going and never looked back."
Miguel nodded as he stared into the void. Izzie had never mentioned much about her family nor that her father had been killed. The only possible reason was that it had been too hard for her to.
"Well maybe you can try reaching out to her again, I'm sure she's just busy with her association, you know how demanding and time-consuming those things are."
Emily nodded. "I have to go to a meeting at town hall. I'll see you later," she said kissing him on the lips which he hardly gave back.
He watched her walk away then returned his attention to the horizon, lost in his thoughts about Izzie. It was stronger than he was, and they kept pervading his thoughts, regardless of how hard he tried not to.
