In The Eye Of The Storm
Chapter 2-Recreational Use
Henry attempts to digress what has happened as Elizabeth and security try to asses the significance of the breach. Henry's POV of this chapter basically.
He was sure that deep down he was having a panic attack.
That was what he was having. Yep. A panic attack.
He was sat on the couch in the living room as a team of fucking CSI agents went through his kitchen and his wife was shouting at the top of her voice about security measures and his son was missing.
His son who the last thing he had said to him had been a prelude to an argument.
You couldn't make this shit up if you tried could you?
He had walked into his house expecting maybe some kind of security breach but Jason there. He had not commuted between what their team was saying and the truth. This was Jason's home, how could he not be there waiting for them? The airport didn't have as much security as his house did and that was before this stalker thing had started so how had someone managed to breach his fucking home and take his fucking son!
And all of this while you were drinking champagne and bitching about how childish he was acting. Great Job McCord. He's probably dead now.
The thought of his baby boy dead on the side of the road blank eyes staring up at him bullet hole through his head and his hair messy with blood was enough to make him want to bend over groaning in pain, he could feel the damn salmon he'd ate the night before swirling around in his belly and he had to clamp down on what he was sure was vomit in order not to spew all over the security agents cause knowing his luck they would think there was a bio hazard in the soup and he would never hear the end of it.
"You think you might have a breach in security, YOU THINK MIKE?"
Trust Elizabeth to hit fury right now. Henry didn't judge her. Fury was easier for his wife to tap into right now rather than the all consuming terror that she was battling. He knew it because he knew what he was feeling himself, he also knew her. Elizabeth and he had been together, had walked through fire together, behind the scenes before this had whole Madam Secretary job had stared. He knew his wife right now was so terrified she could barley put one word in front of the other and she was using her rage as a cover so she could appear put together when in fact she was seconds away from falling apart.
Henry knew the feeling, he was firmly in the falling apart stage right now. At some point he suspected he would be angry, he suspected that the thought of their home where their children slept being violated by someone they were supposed to trust would hit him so hard that he wouldn't be able to breathe with anger at the violation done to him but right now he was panicked and he was terrified and he felt like telling Elizabeth to do whatever the hell the kidnappers wanted.
"Ma'am I must insist that you move to a secure location with your daughters—"
"Do you even have them? How do we know that this isn't some co-ordinated attack? Jesus Mike do you even know the security that you are putting around my children? You know Fred wouldn't do a half assed job like this—"
Henry thought dimly that, that might have been a low blow even though Mike took it on the chin as did Matt.
"Elizabeth" he said quietly and even though he said it as quiet as he could she turned to him immediately blonde curls bobbing around her face.
"Enough. Mike that wasn't fair—"
"I don't blame you both" Mike said speaking more than he had done in the past few months. "If I had kids I'd be up the wall right now. And Ma'am yes I do know where your daughters are. We have them both on route to a secure location I've sent men that Fred hand picked personally for their detail when he took over two years ago, I'd trust them both with my life and if they turn out to be working for your stalker I will personally resign my commission and then eat the steering wheel of the car. This was planned which means we have a breach, until we can fully investigate it we can't say for sure if it is over."
"I've never been part of the plan though, the kids were always the target"
"Maybe so but Ma'am we don't know we—"
"What the hell do they want?" he said speaking up. "I mean there's no note right? No ransom"
"No sir—"
"Then why take him? Surely they must demand something, they sent us photos for God's sake we always assumed there would be some political agenda to the stalking or at least that's what the FBI assumed so why when they have our son haven't they told us what they want?"
"Unless it's not political" Mike said quietly. "Look…I know neither of you want to hear this but your job Ma'am might not have anything to do with this. Did the FBI ever consider that it might be something as simple as some guy or girl off the street who was set off by something one of your children did? Or Jason? Explicitly?"
"Jason why?"
"He was the one they SWATED wasn't it? They didn't go after your daughters and believe me if you wanted to make a point they are both easy to get to. Stevie doesn't have any routine to her day but she is always out in the open and exposed when she does go out and Allison's even worse. Jason at the very least has some kind of a routine and that routine includes security."
Henry didn't know what was worse, the fact that they had never considered this or the fact that the second Mike said it all out in the open it made sense.
"What do you think they will do?" Elizabeth stressed suddenly and it was Henry and Henry alone who heard the crack in her voice as she tried very hard to say the words without thinking of the images that naturally came with them.
Images that no parent should have in their head.
"I don't know" Mike said patiently. "That will have to be for the FBI to figure out. Right now I have to look after the four of you and right now Ma'am this house is not safe. I am running my men and woman through the ringer right now figuring out who is missing and if there is anything suspicious but this location has been compromised and therefore I can't have you here while we do. Ma'am Fred would tell you to go so please, please let me take care of you and Doctor McCord."
Elizabeth turned to him and though Henry was loath to go in the fog that was his brain right now he thought that he could understand what Mike was telling him and why. He nodded and she reached forwards clawing for his hand which he took and together they made it out the door and into the car which was off before either one of them had time to breathe.
Elizabeth took another shuddering breathe.
"I want to know everything when you know it Mike. I swear to God if you keep one piece of information from me—"
"I know Ma'am. Russell Jackson has been informed and so has the President, we have both of your daughters safe and your Chief of Staff has also been informed so she is gathering all of your other staff to make sure that the information on this is kept out of the loop of the press. The last thing anyone needs is to spook this guy or whoever it is that he or she works for"
Henry nodded though he was hardly hearing the words and then he rammed up the partition before he could stop himself. He found that he was shaking so violently his hand was a blur and then before he could stop himself he said the one thing that had been playing round his head in a loop since he had seen the blood—his baby boy's blood on the counter where he had, had his head smashed into it (Henry knew that had been what had happened, he knew it, deep down he knew it).
"The last thing that I said to him was that he was acting like a child and he was grounded for two weeks and it was all because he wouldn't hand over his laptop. Stevie was pecking away about an Instagram account and Jason was on at free speech and Allison was there and I snapped and I scared him and then he got his hackles raised because God knows we are too much alike and…" he scrubbed his face running his hand down over his eyes and his skin as if he could scrub away the memories of everything that had happened since those first pictures in the mail.
"And I told him he was a child. Fuck…Elizabeth how…what if that is the last thing that he ever remembers me saying?" that last bit came out on a whimper that turned rapidly into a sob and he shoved his fingers in his mouth biting down on bone and skin and desperately trying to keep the sobbing that was rising rapidly to a minimum but the pain in his hand barely registered with him.
"No" Elizabeth said her big eyes shining behind her glasses and her hands shaking as she pulled both of his towards her.
"No, Henry we are not gonna think like that okay…this is Jason, he's tough and he knows how to keep his head down and not start anything, he's smarter than either one of us were at his age, more than likely he'll start talking about Marxist anarchism of some complete paradox and they'll get so confused or so board then they will drop him on the side of the road where we can safely pick him up"
It was a pipe dream and they both knew it. Neither one of them wanted to voice the fear that Jason might never be found. They had no idea who was helping their stalker or if this even was their stalker. It was a paralysing fear, a maze of terror of which there was no way to break through.
"What do we tell the girls?" Elizabeth asked into the silence.
"All of it" he replied back chewing on his nail. She took his other hand and wrapped it tight around her own shaking ones and now there was nothing for him to do to distract him from the terror that was gripping him so hard that he thought he would never be able to escape.
"We tell them all of it. And then we do whatever we have to do to get our son back"
"Henry if you mean resigning I was there before this nightmare began"
"I know" he said again gripping her hand. "I know that Elizabeth I do. I know I just…fuck…I hope to God that that isn't the last conversation that we have I just…I can't stand the thought of him thinking that I thought he was a child I just…if he's…God he must be so fucking scared right now—" he had to stop talking least he start crying again. The car was pulling to a stop at some house he had never seen before but if Mike could get him to his children then Mike could be driving him to the gates of hell for all he cared.
God his life for Jason to be behind those doors.
Elizabeth clambered out the car almost tripping on her dress and Henry nearly followed. He was suddenly very aware that he was in a dress suit. Mike his hand on his shoulder gently propelling them forwards said in a soothing kind of tone as if he understood what Henry was thinking in that long random moment said quietly.
"We have a change of clothes coming for you both. Looks like whoever was in the house came in with one goal in mine Ma'am, Sir. They didn't breach the upstairs, looks like it was Jason they were after and Jason alone…I am afraid this is looking more and more like an inside job and therefore more and more like someone on my staff has gone rogue."
"Great" he deadpanned.
When all this was over and they had Jason home, Henry knew he was going to have to buy Mike something for being a colossal dick to him in this moment right here but the truth of the matter was that right now he couldn't get Jason's last look he'd given him off his face. That last look of defiance mixed in with the usual dark look that Jason had been giving him lately. The look that Jason had been giving because he had not known the full depths of what was going on right now. Because he had not known that someone was out there trying to get him. And Henry's response…
Well…
He remembered what Jason had said at his Dad's funeral.
"I don't want to be arguing with you when you die"
Right now though he was substituting his own name with Jasons. The you with I.
Oh God.
His girls were there as soon as the door opened and Allison flew at her Mom so fast it was hard to see where one ended and the other began other than the deafferenting hair colours.
Stevie was there too her eyes big in her white face.
"Dad?"
He couldn't speak but instead he looked at her and Stevie got a look on her face that he knew was the same look she had given him when she had found out about the coup in Iran.
He reached out and she folded herself into his arms and he used her to keep himself upright. She didn't question it instead she burrowed her head under his chin and rubbed his back. Henry didn't say anything. He didn't think he could.
He thought perhaps though his girls might have understood.
And there you are, hope you liked this one, see you for the next one.
Next Chapter-Jason wakes up in a dark hole. He begins to realise that is the least of his problems. Some TRIGGER WARNINGS for this chapter.
