In The Eye Of The Storm

Chapter 4-Bless The Broken Road

Elizabeth and Henry get a photo and then a reprieve (kind of) and then a demand.

The minute he hears that the bastard holding his wife hostage by the phone is also the one holding his son hostage he lunges forwards body meeting the granite tiles of the worktable of whatever strange house they were being held hostage in.

He leaned forwards as if sheer will alone could make Jason appear before them. He was achingly aware that he was grasping, being watched, desperate to be with his son again. He wanted nothing more than to be with his son again. His baby boy. Jason.

He needed him. Henry needed him like air.

And least was what was playing on his mind when his wife took that phone call.

He wouldn't think about the last conversation that he had, had with his son, he was not going to think about how he had yelled at Jason, how he had took his phone and his laptop of him—things that he could have used to call the alarm if he had needed to. He didn't want to think about the words Jason had said in his head at his father's funeral, the words playing around like a warning tocsin bell and him unable to unhear them.

I don't want to be fighting with you when you die.

I don't want to be fighting with you when you die.

I don't want to be fighting with you when you die.

Only now it was replaced with when I die.

Jason dying…

The thought of his son dead, the thought of sticking his boy under the ground, the thought of the light in those eyes going dark and unseeing was enough to make him want to get onto the ground and die himself. He was half of a mind to tell the man on the phone that he was ready and waiting to take Jason's place.

The only saving grace was that Elizabeth was right here with him. Henry might not know what was being said down the phone in the intermediate, his brain might be late to the party but the truth was that to save their son his wife would launch the invasion of France herself.

"What do you want" his wife said flatly. It wasn't even a question with her. She was using her first full and formal Madam Secretary tone which was good because Henry right now didn't think that he could speak.

"What we've wanted all along. For you to resign. Did you really think that we wanted to do this? Wanted to involve your innocent children?"

"Then why did you?"

"Because you didn't listen" the voice said and Henry took a moment through the rage and panic to acknowledge that the voice genuinely believed what he was spewing. He didn't know who it was but whoever it was that had his baby boy was not doing this for the sheer hell of a good pay packet. They were doing it because they believed in it, they had a cause and that was the kind of fanatic that was always a hell of a lot more dangerous than the ones doing it for petty cash.

"Well I'm listening now"

"Well there's the argument that it's too little too late" the voice shot back. "My employer only wanted you to resign, we didn't have to do this, this whole thing could have been avoided if you'd put your family before your job but you didn't…so whatever happens next is extra. You chose this, and on the dark nights when this prays upon your brain and eats at the heart of you just remember that you could have stopped this…I don't know how you intend to look your son in the eye again…well…if he can see."

Elizabeth's eyes shot up to his her face white. Henry knew right now she couldn't speak. He was much of the same and the two of them ignored Ephrim hand gesture that they should keep talking because they were locked in the same agony. Parents, CIA and NSA and they both knew what the threats were and what people were capable off. They knew that children could be used to get their parents to crack. Hell they were both cracking now. They both knew this about the other, they both knew this about everyone.

"What the hell did you do to him?" came a voice growling with anger and it took Henry a moment to realise that it was coming from him. It felt like he was watching this entire thing from outside his own body. He could see what was going on, he could feel what was going on but he wasn't in control of it…this was a new feeling, he was a Marine fighter pilot for God's sake…feeling out of control was something he had only felt once before and that had been when Jason had casually mentioned that there was a coup in Iran and then Russell had told him that they didn't know where his wife was.

"I did what was necessary" came the voice. "He didn't put up much of a fight once I told him you weren't bothered with him"

BANG.

He had slammed his hand into the marble counter tops. Elizabeth jerked backwards looking at him with shock and if the pain shooting from his knuckles upwards towards his arm was anything to go by then Henry was about ninety nine percent sure that he had broken something.

"Put my son on the phone right now" he snarled and again the mild mannered Professor was amazed at how his voice sounded. The father in him though was incensed at the sheer fucking audacity of this man who had come into his home, terrorized his wife and children, kidnapped one and then had the balls to blame his wife for it. Never mind whatever filth he had been poisoning Jason with…never mind what he had done to Jason.

It didn't matter he thought desperately as silence came down the phone. It didn't matter…none of it mattered…all that mattered was that his son came through this alive. Henry thought that it didn't matter what had happened…they could live with whatever had happened…they could try and put all the pieces back together again…what they could not live with was a world without Jason in it.

"Okay" came the voice simply and Henry blinked. He caught Elizabeth's expression which was slightly open mouthed and he shrugged. He didn't know what to make of it either. This whole thing was running away at the speed of light and neither one of them knew what they were doing—all this training and neither one of them knew what the hell was happening next…

And then there was a rustling sound and a groan, low and painfilled. Henry gritted his teeth and reminded himself to breathe. Elizabeth moved so she was standing next to him and her hand found his unbroken one and she squeezed it hard enough that at any other times he would have been having childbirth flashbacks.

And then there was another groan and then…

"Lo?"

Elizabeth breathed out her head hitting the table for a second as relief seemed to crush her entire body. Henry didn't bow or bend or break but that was only through sheer force of will that had been installed in him long ago when he had gotten off that bus at bootcamp.

"Lo?"

"Jason?"

There was another groan and then the sound of something wet that Henry knew from bitter, bitter experience was the sound of someone coughing blood. There was a tsking sound from down the phone.

"Damn" came the voice again. "He doesn't look good does he? I did tell…ah well…as fucked up as it sounds Madam Secretary you should be thanking your lucky stars that it was me. If it had been anyone else he might be damaged beyond repair. With me…well…he might with time go back to looking like himself again…well…one can only hope" there was again the manically kind of laughing and Henry had to close his eyes and breathe in and out just so he didn't smash the phone into pieces end their only link to their son, cause criminal damage and frighten the rest of the security team plus the FBI who he was now only just realising were listening into the conversation as if they could pull Jason's location out of thin air.

"Listen to me" he said through gritted teeth. "I swear to every God out there—and believe me I know a few—that if I find you—"

"You'll do what?" said the voice down the phone sounding distinctly unimpressed. "You'll do what Professor? Please…don't say you're a soldier. You hid behind a cockpit you didn't do shit, you'll stand behind your wife again as you have done so many times. You don't understand the real sacrifice that it takes to do the shit that we do…to do the shit that every man, woman and child has to do when your wife sits on her throne pulls Dalton's leash and gives him an order with her big blue eyes so wide and expressive…you don't know shit. So don't threaten me tough guy or I'll take my knife and rip your son open from left hip to right hip and I'll let him bleed out long and low and slow here. I'll make it so an open casket is the only decision you don't have to make. You know I can…you know by now I will. So here is what is going to happen, your going to resign Madam Secretary…and don't worry…we will tell you exactly what you have to say and then maybe…maybe…I will text you a location of where you can come and find your boy…only you will dictate weather or not he is alive or dead at the end of it."

And with that the phone snapped shut and the dial tone hit them both.

"Well?" Elizabeth said turning around blonde hair still in it's curls from the party. "Did you get something from that torture?"

"We didn't get a location" Ephrem said quietly. "But I think we learnt enough to find out who that man is and once we find out who he is then we can get started—"

Elizabeth opened her mouth perhaps to tell the FBI Director just where he could get started and what he could do with the phone no doubt but before she could Henry hissed. His hand had suddenly come back to life and she turned again and snapped at the nearest lacky who was looking at her with something akin to awe.

"Doctor NOW!"

The lacky ran off.

"We need to tell the girls" she said her hand shaking as she watched as the Doctor taped Henry's hand up. "We need to tell them what we are looking at, we need…I need to get the major news networks involved…I need to speak to Conrad and make sure he knows what I have to do"

He nodded dimly.

"He sounded in a lot of pain" he said and then before he could say anything else he could feel his face crumple. Elizabeth knowing him perhaps better than she knew herself turned so that he was hidden from view and she gripped his head letting him rest it in her stomach her hands coming around to grip at his shoulders. He breathed in the smell of his wife and tried to ground himself and his thoughts but he couldn't get his mind off that little groan that Jason had given, the little Lo, as if he couldn't form the word and he felt tears hit his eyelids threatening to brim over.

"It's okay" Elizabeth said into his hair. "It's okay—"

"How is it okay?" he asked brokenly.

"Because we are going to get him back" was all she said through gritted teeth. "Because I promise you Henry we are going to get him back even if I have to shoot Conrad on TV if I have to. I am getting our son back and then we are going back to the horse farm and that will be the end of that. But I promise you…I will get him back…we will get him back. I promise you…I need you to believe that promise Henry"

He nodded but he was hardly hearing her.

He didn't have the heart to tell her that he didn't know if she could do what she was promising.

Either way he just shut his eyes and clutched at her. Elizabeth the person who kept him standing in the storm that was threatening to see him overboard.

She clutched back just as hard.

And they were left alone like that for a very long time.

And there you go, hope you enjoyed this one and I will bring you the next chapter as soon as I can. This story is about fourteen chapters long so we only have ten left!

Next Chapter-Stevie and Allie sit upstairs in a safe house and wonder if they are ever going to see their little brother again. It puts somethings into perspective for both of them.
