Alice POV
"How can she have been bitten?" I exclaimed looking at my siblings.
"Yeah, and how hasn't she turned?" Rosalie said, sounding almost bitter.
"Oh, Edward is gonna freak, when he finds out," Jasper groaned.
"Yeah, I already thought he was going to, simply because of the cigarettes, the alcohol and the sex, but this! Someone sunk their teeth into his girlfriend," Emmett said, looking worried, but also slightly amused.
"She's not his girlfriend, Em! She hasn't been in ages," Rosalie said, annoyed. "That should be clear from how she sleeps around."
I rolled my eyes, while reaching for my phone. "I'm gonna call Carlisle and Esme. We have to tell them about this," I said.
"Why?" Rosalie huffed. "She isn't part of our family, so what if someone bit her. She was probably begging for it, to become like us."
"How can you even say that," I shrieked quietly, trying to keep my cool. "She was attacked! By a vampire! It's a miracle she's even alive."
Rosalie rolled her eyes and said "Do what you want. I have a lesson that starts in less than five minutes, and I'm not the type to be late, like someone else," before stomping off.
"I'm sorry, guys," Emmett said looking embarrassed. "I'll talk to her later."
"You better," I said angrily. "She used to hate Bella, simply because she was human, then she blamed Bella for 'tearing our family apart', even though that was all Edward's decision, and now she's mad because Bella dared to be attacked by a vampire?! It's absolutely ridiculous."
Jasper grabbed me and Emmetts arms, and pulled us away from the entrance.
"Shh, she's coming this way," he said looking over his shoulder, where Bella and her friends were walking towards the exit and into the building. "Okay, we all have lessons that start now, right? We'll continue this discussion when we get home. Carlisle and Esme should also be here for this. Edward however… I'm not so sure about, just yet," Jasper said worriedly. I closed my eyes trying to get a picture of what Edward would do once his lessons ended. His eyes were, as they constantly were lately, black today. We encouraged him to go hunting before this semester started, but he refused to do pretty much anything anymore. But it seemed today would be enough of a strain on his self-control, and he would go hunting once school let out.
"He'll go hunting after school, so we can talk to Esme and Carlisle there," I said as we all hurried to our different classrooms.
The lesson was long and boring, and I certainly wasn't able to concentrate. I could not stop thinking about Bella. Our sweet Bella! What had happened to her? Who would have attacked her? Did she just randomly come across another of our kind in these past 3 years? I knew she had a strong and very appealing scent to our kind, but what are the chances, even of someone who attracts as much danger as Bella did, to randomly come by a vampire. Something about this smelled fishy, and I was severely regretting not having used my power to keep an eye on her these last few years. I texted Carlisle and Esme, and said we needed to have a family meeting this afternoon. We would tell Edward later, once we had agreed on the best way of breaking the news to him. This would crush him! He left to keep her safe, and it didn't seem she had been safe at all. On top of that Bella smoked, drinked and had a tendency for one-night-stands… This would not go over well with him at all!
"Where's Edward?" asked Esme, when we entered the living room of the house. She and Carlisle were waiting for us on the couch when we got back from school.
"He's out hunting," Jasper said. "And we think it would be best to leave him out of this conversation."
"Alright, I'm guessing you want to talk about Edward then," Carlisle sighed. "We are all worried about him, but I don't know what we can possibly do for him anymore."
"He's breaking our family apart, moping about all the time," huffed Rosalie, also sitting down on one of the sofas with Emmett.
"It's not just about Edward," I said to our parents. "It's about Bella too."
Esme's eyes widened, and Carlisle sat up straighter and said "Have you seen something, Alice?"
"Actually, we have all seen something, Carlisle!" Emmett said grinning. "Bella is at the college! In the same anthropology class as me and Jazz."
"What?! She is here? You saw her? How is she? Did you talk to her?" Esme said in a rush while smiling. Esme had long ago started to see Bella as another daughter, and it broke her heart having to leave her behind in Forks. Even more so, it broke her heart everyday, seeing Edward so miserable.
Jasper put his hand up to stop the onslaught of questions. "We didn't speak with her. But yes, we saw her! And listened in on a conversation she had with her friends," Jasper said, looking slightly guilty.
"Well, how was she? Did she seem fine? Happy?" Carlisle asked.
"She seemed… okay," I said, trying to find the right words. "She is alive, at least!"
"Well, of course she's alive. Why wouldn't she be?" Esme asked worriedly.
"She ehm… She had these scars," I started, before Emmett interrupted.
"She had a bite mark, a fucking vampire bite mark, on her neck!" Emmett said loudly.
Both Esme and Carlisle gasped, staring at us.
"You don't mean… Is- Is she like us now?" Carlisle said shocked, taking Esme's hand.
"No, she's just like she used to be! Well, a hungover and smoking version of the Bella we used to know, but definitely human," Emmett said chuckling. That seemed to shock them even more, however I didn't know if it was from the news of Bella being bitten again and not turning into a vampire, or of Bella drinking and smoking.
"But how is that possible?! And who could have bitten her? You haven't seen anything, Alice?" Esme asked, staring at me.
"No, nothing! I saw a few glimpses of her the first few months after we left… She seemed tired and sad, to be honest. But I thought, like Edward did, that with time she would get over us and be happy again… But all visions stopped after a while, when I wasn't actively looking anymore. I assumed however that if something really bad happened to her, like a vampire attack, that I would still see it…. I thought she was doing okay, since I wasn't seeing anything anymore," I ended sadly. My eyes were burning from tears that I would never be able to shed. Esme stood up from the couch, and gave me a tight hug.
"It's not your fault, sweet Alice. We all did what we thought was best, was safest, for her. We are as much to blame for this as you! We should have checked up on her a long time ago," Esme said, sounding just as guilty as I felt.
"How did she look, well except for the bite?" Carlisle asked. "You said she was hungover and smoking? Do you think this is an everyday occurrence for her?"
"It definitely sounded like she had a habit of drinking, until she can't even remember who she goes home with," Emmett responded nonchalantly. Jasper punched him on the arm, while I glared at him. "Well, it's true! Her friends were basically like 'that's classic Bella behavior' and just laughed it off!" Emmett defended himself. This confession seemed to shock Esme and Carlisle even more, and they exchanged worried glances.
"That doesn't sound very healthy, nor safe," Carlisle said, sounding concerned.
"Oh, for fuck's sake!" Rosalie exclaimed. "Who cares if that girl gets wasted and screws around?"
Carlisle sighed and glared at Rosalie, who shrank slightly.
"Because it could point to some underlying issues she has. Furthermore, drinking that excessively is dangerous and someone could seriously hurt Bella, when she is in that state."
"Well, she is in college," Emmett pointed out. "Excessive drinking is kinda the norm nowadays."
"Exactly, she is doing what all other stupid adolescents do!" Rosalie huffed.
"When have you ever seen Bella act, like others her age act," Jasper countered.
"Hmm, let me see, what about when she got involved with a dangerous man, who is six times her own age," Rosalie sneered triumphantly.
"Oh yeah, because that is what all teenagers do!" I said sarcastically. "And calling Edward a dangerous, old man, is a low blow, even for you Rose."
"Alright kids! Calm down, please," Esme asked, putting a hand on Rosalie's shoulder, before she could respond. I could feel Jasper sending calming waves throughout the room, but it didn't alleviate the lump I had in my stomach.
"Esme's right, let's stop fighting about this! Maybe there is more to these vices Bella has, maybe there isn't. Will you try and keep an eye on her these next few days? Maybe that will give us a better understanding of the situation," Carlisle said, effectively ending the discussion.
"Of course, father," I said, while Emmett and Jasper both nodded.
"But what about Edward? I really don't know how he will handle this entire situation. I'm afraid as soon as he hears that Bella is here, he will leave again, in the hope of saving her from him, when maybe she needs saving from herself," I sighed.
"Yes, Edward has had a tendency to romanticize human life, and think of our kind as the only evils in the world, without taking into consideration that human life can also be cruel and brutal," Jasper agreed. Carlisle sighed and looked towards Esme for support.
"We can't keep Edward in the dark for long… Both because that would be immoral, but also at some point one of us will evidently think about this around him," Carlisle said.
"Yeah, and there are certain aspects of Bella's life that I doubt he will want to hear details about," Emmett said, glancing sideways at Rosalie.
"Oh, Edward needs to grow the fuc-" Rosalie started, before Carlisle put up his hand, and effectively shut her comment down.
"When we talk to Edward, we will only mention the necessities; Like the scar and maybe the excessive drinking. Agreed?"
"Yes," we all chorused, while Rosalie grumbled a "Fine."
"Good," Carlisle said smiling. "Until then, keep your thoughts to yourself, and your eyes on Bella."
