Pairing: Logan & Veronica
Rating: T to M (for later chapters if they continue)
Veronica was in the car.
Scratch that.
She was still in the car.
She was on yet another late night stakeout. It felt as if she hadn't gotten out of her car for two, or was it three nights since the stakeout had begun. Not that it mattered. Logan was gone. Again. She didn't feel like being alone in an empty apartment anyway. But Veronica was tired.
Scratch that.
She was exhausted. She wanted nothing more than to go home, take a hot shower, maybe have a glass of wine, and curl up in bed beside Logan.
Scratch that.
They'd probably wind up on the too small living room couch watching TV. They rarely made it to the bedroom, although she found herself there. Logan would carry her to bed long after she'd fallen asleep.
Scratch that.
Except for the times when he comes home and they haven't seen each other in days, weeks, or sometimes even months. On those occasions they always made it to the bedroom but only after they'd made love on every other available surface of the apartment. Their movements and their bodies were always frantic and desperate after so much time apart.
Scratch that.
It was more likely she would be curled up next to Pony since Logan was gone. But even Pony was gone because her dad had taken him as was his custom when she went on long stakeouts like this one. Since she couldn't be curled up next to her husband or her dog, she might as well be paying the rent sitting in her car with a pair of binoculars doing surveillance for a client.
"C'mon," Veronica griped, impatiently, "I don't have all day."
Scratch that.
She had nothing better to do. But she was expecting a Skype call from Logan. Her laptop was stowed in the backseat. Veronica gets out of the car and stretches her legs and gets back in time to see the target leave the apartment across the street. She gives the driver a five minute head start before she follows him at a safe distance.
Her laptop beeps from the backseat.
"Oh cuss it," she mutters as she reaches one arm into the backseat to grab the computer.
"Hold on! Don't hang up!"
She's distracted reaching for the computer. She doesn't see the car that runs the red light heading towards her until it's too late
In the seconds before the accident the people she loves run through her mind on a loop.
Her dad.
Logan.
Wallace.
Mac.
Logan.
She's going to miss his call.
"I'm sorry babe," she whispers, before she loses consciousness.
Logan gets off the plane at the airport and gets into the rideshare car. He turns on his cell phone as the car drives towards the apartment.
He hasn't told Veronica he's coming home.
It's going to be a surprise.
There's a missed call from an unfamiliar number and one voicemail.
He checks the voicemail and listens, "This message is for Logan Echolls. This is Neptune General Hospital. I'm calling because you're listed as the emergency contact for Veronica Mars-Echolls. She was brought into the ER following a car accident tonight. You should get here as soon as you can."
Logan's eyes widen in shock as he listens," Change of plans!" he shouts to the driver, "Take me to Neptune General Hospital right now!"
He hangs up the phone and dials Wallace's number.
"Wallace, it's Logan. I got a message from the hospital. Are you already there? I'm on my way! How is she? Call me back!"
The car pulls up in front of the hospital, Logan's out the door before the car comes to a complete stop. He runs through the automatic doors into the ER.
"I need to find my wife Veronica Mars-Echolls. She was in a car accident tonight."
"Logan!" He glances towards the sound and sees Wallace running towards him from the other end of the corridor.
"Wallace! How is she? What happened? Is her dad here?"
"Some jerk was speeding, ran a red and hit her. She's got a few bruised ribs, a concussion, and a broken leg. I called her dad. But he's not here yet. Did she know you were coming home?"
Logan shakes his head, "No. I was gonna surprise her. Thanks for being here, man."
Wallace grins, "I told you. She's my best friend. I'll always look out for her."
"I know. But thanks for being here. I appreciate it."
"No problem. I'll let you go in and see her now."
They exchange high fives and Wallace walks towards the door. Logan walks into the room. He feels a pang in his chest when he sees Veronica in the hospital bed, her left leg in a cast. She's hooked up to a heart monitor with an I.V. in her left hand and a bandage around her head. Her face is scraped and bruised.
"Hey," he whispers, grasping her free hand and kissing it, "Hey Veronica, I'm here."
She groans and turns her head towards the sound of his voice. She opens her eyes and sees Logan in his uniform, "You should only wear this … ever," she mumbles, her voice thick with the combination of painkillers, sedatives, and sleep.
Logan grins, "I will. If you promise you'll be more careful. Are you okay?"
Veronica winces as she sits up, "I'm better now that you're here."
He leans down to kiss her. She leans forward to get closer to him, "Mother cusser!" she exclaims as her ribs ache.
"Take it easy," he says, pushing her shoulders back against the pillow gently, "What hurts? Do you need anything?"
She shrugs, "Mostly my head. I need you to kiss me and get me some aspirin so we can get outta here."
Scratch that.
Clearly she wasn't going anywhere for a while.
She tries to sit up again and puts her palm against her forehead, "Holy cuss, my head hurts!"
Logan kisses each of the scrapes and bruises on her face, "Hey, Ronnie, will you just lay back before you hurt yourself? You were in a car accident, remember?"
"Yeah." Veronica admits, "You wanna sign my cast?"
"Love to," Logan says, "If it'll get you to sit still for five minutes."
"I can think of another way you can keep me still," Veronica says, with a smirk, "Maybe you and your Harvard mouth can show me some effing courtesy. But you'll have to be gentle."
"I can be gentle," he assures her, "So no hair pulling or speaking in tongues, then?"
"I didn't say that," Veronica laughs, and then winces as pain ripples through her body.
"No," Logan insists, "But I did," he leans towards her again; "I don't wanna hurt you. C'mere."
Someone clears their throat from the doorway, "I don't mean to interrupt," the doctor says, "I wanted to see how you were feeling."
"Like I've been in a car accident," Veronica quips.
"Yes, well we had to be careful when we X-rayed your leg. Given your condition."
Both Logan and Veronica look up at the doctor, "What condition?" They ask in unison.
"Congratulations Veronica, you're pregnant. You're a little over six weeks along."
That tracks. The last time she and Logan had made love was after he'd come home from his last stint on duty.
Veronica was excited.
Scratch that.
She was ecstatic.
"We're gonna have a baby," Logan whispers in her ear. She doesn't realize there are tears of joy running down her face until he wipes them away.
"Cuss yeah, we are!" Veronica exclaims as Logan kisses her once more.
"I had a miscarriage before," she tells the doctor, "is there anything I need to avoid doing?"
"Maybe avoid getting into car accidents," the doctor suggests, "But you'll be laid up for a while until the cast comes off so you won't have to worry about that. I'll write you a prescription for some prenatal vitamins and see you for regular checkups every month during the pregnancy."
"Can I take her home?" Logan asks, still not releasing her hand.
"We monitor patients with concussions for up to forty-eight hours."
"Doctor," Logan says, "I give you my word as a Navy man. If you let me take my wife home, I'll monitor her myself for the next forty-eight hours."
The doctor glances at Veronica as she weighs this option, "Keep your leg elevated any time you sit or lie down for one to two weeks. You can take Tylenol for pain. Call me or come back with any questions. Let me remove your I.V. and I'll bring your discharge papers for you to sign."
"Okay," Veronica sighs, "Thank you."
Veronica doesn't remember signing the discharge papers or going to the car. She doesn't remember Logan carrying her up the three flights of stairs to the apartment. When she comes back to herself she's in Logan's arms and he's unlocking the front door.
"Couch or bedroom?" Logan asks as he sets her down on her feet.
"Bedroom," she mumbles, "But remember be gentle."
Logan smiles and raises his hand to his temple in mock salute, "Yes ma'am!" He picks her up and carries her into the bedroom.
"Cuss you, I'm not a ma'am!" Veronica protests, as Logan kisses her forehead, "Go to sleep, Veronica."
"Only if you'll go to sleep with me," she says burying her face in his shoulder.
"Only to sleep," Logan insists, "Nothing else until you're feeling better."
She's asleep by the time Logan pulls back the covers and puts her to bed.
"I love you," he whispers as he kisses her forehead and her still flat belly. As he falls asleep beside her, she rolls over and wraps herself around him broken leg and all.
