Footsteps echoed wearily around the solemn corridors. The eerie darkness blanketing the decaying furniture and décor. Only the light from the moon outside gave a blue light to the desperate dust ridden objects.
Jonathan carried his melancholy body through such places. His footsteps alone, the moon's light slowly fading as the sun began to rise. He made sure to stay out of its light. Though he couldn't help but let his hand reach to let the daylight play amongst his fingers. It should've stung, but his numb fingers couldn't recall the pain and so he felt nothing.
His heart bloomed further as his Hamon consumed it once more. The sun's light trickled through his exposed patchy skin. Jojo had stopped walking a while ago as the sun entranced him. He smiled warmly. A familiar feeling he was glad to find again.
He turned as the yellow armour came closer. The World waded through sunbeams meet Jonathan. The rose still in his grasp.
"Didn't you want to put it back in the vase?"
The stand looked at the rose then back at Jonathan. He pointed to the small garden outside. It remained still within the boundaries of the castle with only a wall to separate it from the town beyond.
"I never thought there could be such a lovely garden here. Lets go." Jonathan held the World's hand as they made their way through the nearest door.
It was a small garden. A small patch of grass with a large rose bush leaning against the wall.
"You want to plant it here?" Jonathan pointed to a spot beside the rose bush. The gentle sunlight gracing it with its presence.
The world nodded and began to scrape a hole out of the grass and dirt. Jojo held the rose. The thorns strangely absent from the rose's stem, entwined in his fingers.
"I wonder what Dio's doing. Hope he hasn't gotten lonely without you."
The world stopped digging. An emptiness crept upon him. He'd forgotten Dio. Maybe he wanted Jonathan to be his user. His kindness was strange for a creature like him. But it was true and nothing like Dio. He considered him not a tool to be used for battle but a living creature. He looked up to Jojo.
"Are you alright?"
They looked into each other's eyes for a while. A quite understanding between them.
"Maybe I can talk to Dio about you. Make he'll see that you're more than just..." Jojo turned to the window. Two glaring red eyes stared back from behind the shade of the curtain. "I'll be back in a moment."
Jonathan left to meet the monster staring at them.
"Can I help you?" Jonathan stood in the doorway. A small smile on his face and wide curious eyes full of life; they looked at Dio with not a hint of hatred.
"I came to get my stand back. It's been a day after all."
"I see. Why don't you help him? We found a rose and thought we'd plant it in the garden. We could all do this together or?" Jojo's voice trailed off as he studied Dio's face.
"You're not angry about earlier? You don't hate me?" Dio's words softened and his eyes directed at the floor. Never once had he broken his gaze with anyone. But he couldn't look Jojo in the eye. What kind of sadness was this? If it even was sadness? Melancholy?
"No. I don't hate you. Sure, you make me angry sometimes but I bet I make you angry too. It's like you said, we are the same, right?"
That smile. Dio looked at it in the golden sunlight. That face. He wanted to cry. The way the sun landed on Jojo. Like he was truly human and alive. Again.
But Dio subsided his tears as a grin formed on his face.
"When you're done planting that rose, maybe we could go for a stroll around town?"
Jonathan nodded. "That would be nice. But won't you get hurt by the sun?"
"You really think a bit of sun can stop me?"
Jojo smiled stayed as he went back outside. Dio watched from the window. His stand was smiling? As Jojo knelt down to help. They shone in the sunlight.
"Dio?"
"Pucci"
"I have received word that Jotaro and his friends are getting quite close."
"Is there anyone left to deal with them?"
"Only those who are still in the castle. I think."
"Send them all after him. Soon we can rest easy in our heaven."
Pucci looked from Dio to Jojo through the beckoning window. He wanted Dio to succeed. But he couldn't help doubt. Doubt? Dio couldn't possibly fail? And what would happen, to Jojo? If Dio was defeated? What would happen to him?
Pucci slightly shook his head as he headed onward down the corridor. Dio couldn't fail. Heaven was so close.
Dio watched Pucci leave. His face never changing from an unamused look. Though worry lingered in his eyes as he saw his friend's quivering movements.
"Shouldn't we be going out at night?" Jojo asked though the harsh movements needed to get his jacket on. "And is this jacket really necessary? Can't I wear something less um... strange?"
"You look wonderful with it on. After all those kinds of jackets are all the rage these days. No need for that crappy formal attire" Dio precisely applied his vivid green lipstick with Pucci's help. "It suits your new look."
"Are you sure?"
But Jojo's question was drowned by Dio's giddy small talk.
"Oh Pucci why don't you come too? Wouldn't want to you to miss our first outing."
"You haven't been out before?"
"No. Dio and I have been rather busy and um." Pucci put the lipstick down and went to help Jonathan with the jacket.
"We've been plotting and scheming as you'd say. Besides, I'm sure you'd like how the cities look now. A lot better than the retched stench of rat piss in coble stone alleys."
"But do you think it's a good idea? To go out when you know is so close?" Pucci whispered as he edged towards Dio.
"Of course, what could one pitiful human do to us. Although." Dio's giddiness slightly soured after remembering the report on his follower's efforts to stop Jotaro. And how they had all failed.
"I see you haven't stopped making enemies." Jonathan muttered under his breath. He knew all too well he couldn't live this fantasy forever. A fantasy where he and Dio got a long like brothers and did things together. Relive their lost youth and such. He wanted to stay blissfully ignorant to Dio's misdeeds and dubious actions. Yet he had enjoyed the time he had with Dio and was glad somethings had been cleaned up between them. Almost.
"Maybe this won't be so bad?" Jojo's voice drowned again as Dio's giddiness returned.
"Jonathan Joestar, would you like to explore Cairo with me? Would you Pucci like to join us?"
'Jonathan? Joestar? So, Jojo was just a nickname? Up until this point Dio has only ever called me Jojo.' Jonathan sat stunned for a moment as realisations swirled his mind.
"Well?"
Pucci looked back at Jonathan whilst Dio began putting on his shoes.
"Sure."
"Pucci?"
"Yes, if I am required."
"We shall set out once you are ready then Pucci."
