Chapter Two
Sam's POV
As my partner- Jules Callahan, and I were driving around town, a call came in through Winnie back at the station.
"Winnie, what'd you got?" I asked, my eyes focused on the road ahead. There was no response. "Winnie?" My partner and I glanced at each other. "Winnie, you there?"
"Sam." She finally responded. She paused for a moment. "911 got a call coming from one of your neighbors. He wasn't sure what was going on. Possible break in."
"Claire and Sage are home." I told her, a worried expression appeared on my face. One on Jules's face as well. "Winnie, call the rest of Team One and have them meet us at my house." Winnie nodded like Sam could see her, then hung up to make the call. My eyes glanced over at Jules, then turned on the sirens and flooded it…
Minutes away from his home, another call comes in from Winnie.
"Winnie what's going on?"
"Sam, I have Sage in the line for you." She replied as she typed on her keyboard. "I'm putting her through." She pushed a button, and I heard my youngest daughter on the headset- crying.
"Sage, honey." I spoke in a soft tone as I tried to stay calm. "Honey, is it safe for you to talk?"
"I think so." She answered, her voice was shaking. "S-someone's in the house." My grip tied around the steering wheel. Who the hell was stupid enough to break into a house in broad daylight? Much less a cop's house.
"Have you or mom seen this person before?" I asked, hoping that wasn't the case. "Do you know what they looked like?"
"No." She answered, sniffling. "I-I don't know."
"That's okay, sweetheart." I assumed her. My eyes glanced over at Jules, then asked Sage. "Honey, is mom with you?"
"She told me to hide." Sage answered. "She-" A loud gunshot echoed, cutting her off. I jumped in my seat and my eyes immediately widened. "Mommy!" Sage screamed, her breathing becoming heavy over the phone.
"Sage, baby, stay quiet." I quickly told her. My breathing matched my daughters. "I'll be there soon, okay?" She didn't say anything. "Sage, can you hear me?" There was no response. My body tensed up. "Sage?" I held my breath, praying to hear her voice. I couldn't hear her breathing anymore. I wished she would make a small noise to tell me she's okay.
Instead, an ear pitching shriek came through the headset.
"Sage!" I yelled just before the line went dead. "Sage?" No answer. "Come on, honey, please talk to me." I begged, but there was still no answer. My eyes glanced over at Jules. She stared back at me.
"What happened?" She questioned, a terrified expression on her face.
"Shots fired."
