"Pull it out slowly, Adrien," Papa Dupain instructed me. Now this was the way to start off a school day, making hot buttery croissants at school. You wouldn't believe the smell and I had to work very hard to keep from drooling. "Alright, class. We'll let these cool and come back after math."
That was so much fun! As I walk I think about how patient and kind Papa was, helping us all with our bowls of dough. Maybe Marinette and I could make something together. I have a massive sweet tooth from hanging out with as Cat, and I'm just a bit sweet on her as well.
"Baking? I don't know, Kitty. Haven't I heard Ladybug keeps you out of the kitchen?" "Hey, if your there, what could wrong?" I answer, neatly dodging the question, even if she's right. "Okay. But we'll need to get a book from the library." "Yes! Thanks, Marinette." "To tell the truth, Kitty, I'm glad you suggested baking because I heard in one of the cooking classes today, they made croissants."
And they were delicious, especially with Mama Cheng's homemade jam. Its such a beautiful day for a walk, the air is crisp and in the golden sunlight of the afternoon the leaves seem to glow with their autumn colors on the branches. A gust of wind makes a small leaf pile dance and spiral in the wind. One flies out of the spiral and into Marinette's hair. "Hold on, Princess. You have a leaf caught in her hair. You okay?" Marinette is rubbing at her eyes. "Just some dust." "Let me see," my voice is gently as carefully remove the leaf and the dust. Before I know I've done it I give her eyelid a gentle brush of the lips.
Its not long after that we reach the library, and I'm glad to get in where its warm. "You want to read a story before we head home?" I ask, once we find a book on muffins. "Okay," Marinette says. I'm happy to find one of my favorite books Owl Moon on the shelf and we find a couch to sit on.
"You read, Kitty," Marinette says, pulling a small throw blanket from the back of the couch. Its big enough that it fits around both of us. As I begin to read, I notice Marinette shuffling closer and she slowly lays her head on my shoulder. A warm feeling spreads through me, even warmer then the blanket.
When I finish the story, I notice Marinette has dozed off, and I carefully put my arm around her and pull her close, resting my chin on top of her head. "We're safe," she mumbles in her sleep. I'm not sure what she means by that, but perhaps its just part of the dream.
I let her rest for awhile, but eventually wake her gently. "Princess, time to rise." "Was I sleeping?" she asks, cuddling into me. "No, just resting but we should…." My throat grows dry as I notice how close we are, and her lips are right there, waiting to be kissed. Seeming to read my thoughts, she nods, and I press a kiss to her lips.
"Right, those muffins aren't going to bake themselves," she says after. The wind has picked up even more, and its hard to talk as we head home, and my lips can still taste hers.
Marinette sets out all the ingredients and she helps me measure and pour things into a bowl. Its when the dough begins a puffy ball that the playfulness in me rises to the surface. "Now, we knead the dough before we scoop it into muffins. Cat!"
"What? This feels pawesome," I sigh contently, sinking my claws in and out of the pillow like dough. "Not kneading with claws, with a rolling pin!" "Oops." "Look at all the claw marks. Use this instead." She hands me the wooden rolling pin. "Back and forth. Here, like this." She interlaces our fingers together, and we begin rolling the dough back and forth, until it begins to flatten.
Soon, after all the muffins go into a baking sheet the oven timer dings and we slide them into the oven. Marinette's phone suddenly buzzes. "Do you think you can watch the oven for twenty minutes? Mama said their swamped down there." "Yeah, I can watch the oven."
Marinette wags a finger under my nose. "No napping. If you fall asleep, there's a good chance the muffins will burn. Be good." Aw, no napping? Hm….
Twenty minutes is a long time, and Marinette never said I couldn't go in my box, did she? A few minutes later, I'm settled in my box watching the oven. However, its warm and cozy, and before I know what's happening, I'm yawning…..
Ugh, that smell is terrible...Oh, no. The muffins! I spring from my box and grab the oven mitts. Oh, pumpkins and spice! The muffins are all black! And Marinette will be so mad at me if she knew I fell asleep. Maybe Bugaboo can help?
"I'm back...Cat!" To late, Marinette is back. "Um, hi?" "Did you fall asleep?" "Meow?" "Oh, Cat. Now we need to make a new batch of muffins." "Okay, I'll grab the…." "Oh, no. Your going to sit in your box and think about what you did. Now I know why Ladybug has you get her coffee."
I plop down in box, knowing she's right. But soon I'm off snoozing again, and when I wake up, I'll get a snack!
