"Marinette, time to go," Mama says. "Coming," I stuff the last of my granola bar in my mouth and follow her. I'm helping her set up for her art class today, and she's paying me in coffee and yarn. Soon it will be the winter season, and I'll be making sweaters and scarves.
The class is held at school, and I like spending time with my mom. I set up all the brushes and papers and make sure all the paint jars are full at the easels. One by one, Mama's students trickle in, and I mostly hang out in the background. I'm diving into a daydream when I hear a familiar voice.
"Is this the right room for the art class?" My head jerks up as I see Adrien standing nervously in the doorway. He looks C-U-T-E in a tan sweater, jeans and a red beret on his head. "Come on in, Adrien. Your father called me about the class earlier in the week. Just sit anywhere."
Adrien looks up and sees me, smiling and giving a little wave. I wave back from my stool, for it looks like Mama wants to start. I wonder if I get my artistic side from both of my parents because while Papa can frost realistic flowers on cupcakes, Mama can tell stories through art.
I assist where needed, and soon the class moves to the easels. I work on my knitting, making sure no one needs me. After class, Adrien stays to help me clean up. "Do you come every Saturday, Marinette?" Adrien asks, as we stand at the little dump sink cleaning brushes. "Not always. I was in need of yarn, so Mama wondered if I wanted to help." "I like the class. Your mother is so nice," Adrien says with a sigh. "They've always been supportive of me being a designer," I tell him. Adrien nods, and I peek at him. His face seems a bit rounder, his eyes sparkling. I don't know when the change happened, but Adrien has seemed happier in the recent weeks….
"Oh, Adrien, I am so sorry." I accidentally splattered him with paint, while trying to clean my brush. "No worries, here let me…." Splat. We grin at each other, splattered each other with paint and giggling until we resemble circus clowns with our made up faces. We calm down after a moment, and I hand him a wet rag. "Every moment I spend with you, Marinette makes me so happy. Your such a lovely girl." "Thanks," I whisper. Adrien touches my elbow, turning me to look at him. "Marinette?" "Hm?" "May I kiss you?" "Yes, please."
Adrien's lips taste like coffee and I can smell his cologne as he pulls me into a hug. I love you, I think to myself. And I wish my heart wasn't torn. I straighten up when I hear a buzzing sound in his pocket, and he takes it out to check, eyes widening. "You good?" I ask. "Yeah, just an event I'm supposed to be at. See you soon!" He kisses my cheek and heads out the door.
Mama is talking to one of the students outside soon, and Tikki flies out from my bag. "Marinette! Ladybug's supposed to go to the Cheese And Wine Festival!" "Oh, Crackers! Thanks!"
Dashing out to tell my mom where I'm headed, I quick transform and take off across the rooftops. I'm panting by the time I've reached the entrance. "So, you just got here too. Good, we can go in together." "Hi, Kitty." "Were you snoozing away in your flower bed again, M'lady?" I laugh. "Excuse me, I haven't even had coffee yet." Cat winks at me as we walk in, and I grow quiet.
So many people, all pushing and shoving, so much noise. "Hey, love. You okay?" "I don't do well with loud sounds. Can we hold hands?" Cat nods, looping his arm through mine. "I'll take care of you."
I immediately feel better and I enjoy tasting different cheeses and wines. "M'lady, will need to get to the main stage. I think they had some activity for us planned." "Glad you remembered," I muttered. I totally spaced about today.
Two vats of grapes sit on the stage as Cat leads me on, and the presenter smiles at us. "Here they are now! Ladybug and Cat Noir!"
Even though the audience is cheering for us, I sallow and my hands shake. Cat softly intertwines our hands, and the shaking stops. "Now, I bet you thought Ladybug and Cat would be trying wine, but we thought we'd make it a little more challenging. They'll be stomping grapes!"
I grin at Cat. "Whoever wins gets five hundred dollars! Let the stomping begin!" I nearly fall into the grapes as some sort of jigging music comes on over the loudspeakers, but I stomp as quick as I can. I try not peek at Cat, who's jigging in time to the music for if I look I'll fall…..
Turns out we both fall, but we're laughing to hard to care when the buzzer sounds. "And the winner is….Ladybug!" "Don't worry, Kitty, I'll buy you something," I reassure him. I collect my prize and we exit the stage to cheers and more applause.
"Ugh, how am I going to get all this grape gunk out of my hair?" I ask. "Think of it as a new style, Bugaboo." Cat runs a hand through his graped-hair making a sticky Mohawk. "I don't think the look will catch on, but thanks for trying."
"I think I can help," a voice makes us turn. "Argos? Everything okay?" "My Kwami wanted some almonds and I wanted to come check out the fun." "Can you wash us with the hose? There's one over by the changing stalls." The event is being held on Swan Island. "Of course."
I shriek as the cold droplets fall over us, and Cat and I dance in the water. I squeak as Cat pulls me close, kissing me under the water. I fasten my lips to his, loving life, loving him….
Finally dry and clean we head back to try a apple variety, and I take a small sip. Cat downs his and starts coughing. "Cat?" My face pales when he doesn't stop after a moment. "M'lady, I'm choking…" Heart pounding, I wrap my arms around his middle, doing the Helmich. I fight back a sob as I work, until a projectile grape files from Cat's mouth.
"Kitty," tears stream down my face as I hug him tightly. "Ladybug, you just saved my life." I look up at him, the tears still flowing. "I can't live without you, Cat."
