I confess I sleep most of the way to New York, for the last few days have been a whirlwind. I meant to look at island homes, but I guess not having bags under my eyes when we land is a good thing to.
I'm supposed to meet a man named Rigel, who is in charge of a massive Halloween photo shoot. My eyes search the crowds, and see a middle-aged man holding a sign that says "Adrien Agreste."
"Nice to meet you. When I saw your resume, I was quite impressed." "Thanks. I know I put the application in kinda short notice, but I'm helping out my family." "Even better. Say, have you worked on hair and makeup before?" "I know a bit, though I'm no expert." "No worries. We just need a backup if one of the stylist's falls sick."
Rigel's car is sleek and fast and it reminds me of a panther. Though nothing can compare to running on the rooftops of Paris under a full moon, playing a game of chase with Bugaboo, laughing in the moonlight….. "Penny for your thoughts, Adrien? You seem miles away." "Oh! Sorry. Lot on my mind, as I recently got engaged to a fashion designer." "Congrats. Anyone I know?" "She's an up and coming, Marinette Dupain-Cheng." "I look forward to see her work someday."
We chat about our lives, as we zoom across the miles that will take us into the heart of New York City. I crane my neck up, looking at the tall skyscrapers. No wonder they are called "scrapers" for they scrape the clouds.
"Ah, home sweet home," Rigel says as the car pulls up the curb. "Your work is your home?" "No girlfriend yet, I'm afraid. In the fashion world, your always moving." I nod, not sure how I feel about that.
As we ascend upwards in the elevator, I see a picture in my mind, of a small infant, cuddled in my arms. Their world is a simple place, just wanting cuddles, a parents love, and their milk bottle.
"We're here!" Rigel sings out and I shake my head, clearing the cobwebs from my brain. Focus, Adrien.
I sign in, and a woman barks at me to go to hair and makeup. I long for the gentle sweetness of Mama's voice, and suddenly I'm clutching my chest in pain, missing my own mother. "Kid, you okay?" Plagg mutters from inside my shirt, watching me dither. "Yep, all good." I rub my eyes, hoping they don't look red.
The girls when they seat me squeal with excitement, for they will be working with the Adrien Agreste. "Ladies, don't fight over me. There's enough of my floof to go around," I wink, pointing at my hair.
I like the girls, they ask me about Paris and what is really like. Though I answer honestly as I can, I long for a place I've never been to, and I find the feeling strange.
Two hours later, I'm a compeltey different person, in my vampire outfit. "Now, bite down on these," Abi giggles. I chomp down a pair of plastic fangs, and I am no longer Adrien, but a vampire.
The fashion show goes without a hitch, and just like that, my short return to modeling is over. I breath a sigh of relief as I step out into the cool New York sunshine and wave down a Uber.
After checking into the hotel, I shower, scrubbing off the makeup. Then I flop down on my bed, calling my favorite girl in the world.
I frown, as the call hasn't connected after a few rings, and finally Marinette picks up. "Hey, love. Any wrong?" She yawns. "No. Why would something be wrong?" "Because its the middle of the night here." Oops. "Remember, I am a floofy cat with two brain cells." Marinette giggles. "We'll just call it a hairball. I miss you." "I miss you, too. What did you do today?" "Oh, Adrien!" her voice rises in excitement and she reminds of a bluebird chirping. She climbs down the ladder, and shows me her desk.
"I got your mother's potion done, and cracked the code to our powers!" "Hey, that's wonderful! How did you figure it out so fast?" "Um, because I didn't have a kitty waiting by the fridge or meowing for scratches under the chin every five minutes?" "I'm not that bad!" We laugh for a minute. "Love?" "Yeah?"
She's climbed back into bed now. "I can't wait to marry you and have kids. I miss M'lady." "You took half of my heart with you, but it will be back soon. And by the way, I want kids too, but I'm going to selfish and want you all to myself for a least a year or two!" "Okay." "Plus, if our kids are anything like us, it will be double the cat puns." "Puns aren't bad, there just painful." "Arrgh!"
"I should let you get some sleep." "Yeah. Will be home soon?" "Possibly tomorrow as long as I can get a flight, but I'd be coming in late."
"Okay. See you soon, Kitty." "Love you, my sweet Bugaboo."
The phone call calmed me down, but now I feel wide awake so I open my laptop and research island homes. By the time the sun rises, I've taken care of our honeymoon plans and bought our island home, plus some surprises for Marinette.
I know she still wants to be a designer, so I picked somewhere where she could still sell her goods. Maybe someday she'll be ready for the bright lights of fashion, but I know her well enough the only bright light she wants to see is a sliver moon.
In the morning, I grab a Starbucks in the lobby, and go for a run in Central Park. The city is very beautiful, but its not home.
I make Plagg's day when we stop in a cheese shop, and I ship three big wheels of cheese back home but one is for Mama and Papa.
I grab a flight mid-afternoon. I can't wait to get back to my darling Bugaboo, but I know there's still work to be done with curing my mother. Little do I know, that as Cat Noir, I'll be facing off against my father again soon.
