The empty streets of Saffron stretched far and wide, the bars and restaurant in the nightlife district's have neon signs adorning the overhang alleyways, shattered glass shards and smithereens were sprinkled across the brick tiled floors, with the central fountains that were once pulsating with movement and flow now lies stagnant and in a state of decay. The whole city seemed to be paralyzed from within, no sign of economic activity or any walks of life. Even the infected lie few and far between, easily avoidable through stealth or a quick thundershock through the heart by Pikachu. The smell of charred and burnt flesh was a horrible experience, but Ash preserve through in the name of finding his teacher. He narrowed his eyes once he reached an intersection, crosswalks meant for pedestrians were empty with rows of digital billboards on skyscrapers and office buildings no longer flashing with advertisements or commercials. To think a city that once houses millions can be brought down to a sudden stand still was fascinating if not terrifying. The gravity of the situation cannot be understated, this was now their reality.

"This is insane Pikachu." The electric mouse nodded, the sound of awe and shock in his trainer's voice was understandable. It too was struggling to comprehend how could a human metropolitan can effectively brought down to nothing. The city should be well fortified against the infected, at least given the number of law enforcement and security. But overwhelmed by flood of Rattatas who ambushed and paralyzed the entire chain of operation and communications, the defenders of the city failed to react in time. Overwhelmed and disorientated, they have lost their footing and communications of the ground, as panic from the civilians spread like wildfire, they lost the battle on two fronts.

"I know the situation is absolutely horrible and people are dead and infected, but- this is pretty exhilarating." To wonder on the streets alone with no soul insight, it was almost fatalistic and contemporary, as if you have the whole city to yourself. The appeal of a societal collapse is always explored in movies, books and video games, but to see it yourself is completely different. They picked up the steps and further explore the city, eyes wondering and unravelling the city that stood still for the moment. But the young man had a mission to complete and he can ill-afford to get wrapped up in his own bubble of fascination. His priority was to find Miss Roxanne and study the infected in broad daylight, carefully observing their behavior, patterns and biology.

"Okay so pharmacy. If memory serves, the pharmacy is down the T-junction, it's near the plaza and malls, I bet that is where the most zombies are too. Friday night means bars and restaurants are full house." Pikachu shot a concerned look to his trainer, the way he trailed off after the realization was heartbreaking. What was meant to be a fun celebratory time off work was met with the gut-wrenching horrors of infected pokemon storming in and biting everyone you see. Your co-workers, partners and beloved suddenly turning on you after you desperately pulled them to the comfort of your arms.

Yet this begs the question, the transformation process from human to zombie was almost instantaneous, a direct attack to the brain and nerves perhaps?

'Usually virus have an incubation period and the symptoms are not immediate.' Ash was perplexed at this, even rabies have a documented 3 - 12 week for the virus to take control of your body, and that is affected by a wide variety of factors such a viral load, victim's immunity and genetic environment. Never, has a virus just took complete control of a body like this before, those tropes only exist in zombie movies, yet fiction seems to be catching up to reality. The raven haired child shook his head, he was no expert or virologist, he would let them do their job, for now he has to do his. Turning around the corner with his polearm in tact, he was greeted by the sight of a broken fence gates and sandbags stockpiling the streets. Armoured military vehicles with turrets and police cars formed a barricade on both sides, with bodies of soldiers and police officers lying lifelessly on the streets. Although hesitant, Ash took a quick look on the corpses, the red stain on their teeth and the complete whiteness in their eyes indicated infection, not to mention the signs of leprosy and necrosis on their skin. He immediately pulled out a pen and notebook from his bag and began to document the symptoms of the infected.

'Visible veins, bleeding gums and purple fingernails, discoloration of the skin, these are all classic zombie tropes.' This was all perplexing to Ash, did art imitate life? How could something so deep rooted in fiction become reality? He sighed and continued to looked around, he eyes lit up at the body armor the fallen soldiers were wearing. Armor right now would be insanely valuable, life-saving even. Military kevlar were design to soften blows and cushion bullet impacts. However on closer inspection many of the vests had wear and tear, not to mention the stains of blood that were thoroughly soaked through. It wasn't worth the risk, the infectivity of the virus still remains unknown and there is a chance of infection after inhaling virus mucus or aerosol for prolonged periods of time. Ash's eyes continued to roam around the compromised roadblock, it seems that a tent was setup to stop vehicles and control traffic flow. This place was not meant to a fortress against the infected, it was to prevent people from leaving the city.

"See anything buddy?" The electric mouse who scouted ahead nodded and leaped onto the wooden table that withstand the onslaught. On it were a bloodstained report, barely eligible but if you squint your eyes enough, you can make out the words and details.

Attention to all personnel, suspected wild pokemon activity is seen brewing around major cities. All units must remain vigilant on the potential attack, civilian riots and panic must be quelled, infected must be shot on sight. Keep your pokemon close and use lethal force to the fullest extent, the main armed forces and reinforcements would arrive on 18th of July, hold out until then.

-5th District

The young man frowned at the notice, it seemed hastily printed. Prior the night before everything, he did notice heavy presence of police and army vehicles, but that was considered normal in the city, especially on the run up to Kanto's national day. A military parade was expected, yet what they received was an outbreak that decimated the entire city.

"18th of July, that's today." It was disheartening, all these defenders were probably counting on reinforcements to back them up and held out as much as they could. The young man nursed a sigh and continued to move forward, there was nothing of value here, many of the equipment and items were either tainted or broken. Bullet shells littered across the streets while the boot of the cars were forcefully pried opened with nothing left. Ash gripped his polearm and used the bottom of the shaft to push apart the debris and broken plywood obstructing his path. The pharmacy is just around the corner, at least according to his memory. But the sound of soft wailing halted his steps, he took a step back and distanced himself from the source of sound. He twirled the polearm and firmly clenched them, a wide angle strike directly to the skull should kill the infected in one shot. The slow shambling walk of a infected woman came into view, with Ash's heart beating rapidly as their eyes slowly met. Instantly, she screeched and began charge towards him with her sharp fangs drippling with blood. The Pallet Town teenager side stepped at the last second and used the momentum of the motion to drive the screwdriver to the back of her head, impaling the infected human through it's brain. The shrieks and screams died down at that very moment, with the flailing limbs and body remain motionless and still. The body soon slumped to the ground, with Ash struggling to pull out the screwdriver that lodged deep into the head. Wiggle and wedge, he managed to dislodge the weapon and watch the blood drippling from the tip of the driver.

"T-That was scary." A direct attack to the head seemed to dispatch them for good, but Ash had also realized the crippling weakness of this method, he can only deal with one at a time. Even something as simple a taking the weapon out from the body requires so much strength, his endurance and strength is only so much for a young man. To risk his life by getting up close and personal of them was pretty stupid, but at least it gave Ash the confidence that they can be dealt with by traditional weapons. He turned to his starter who looked visibly relief at the outcome of the situation.

"Sorry Pikachu, that must be scary huh?" The electric mouse nodded vehemently, his trainer shouldn't even think about getting close with them. He would deal with the infected and he should stay at the backlines, commanding him as always. The two recomposed themselves and pressed on the suburban neighborhoods and parks, the sound of incessant groaning caused Ash's legs to shake. It sounded like a whole army of them were nearby, directly at where they need to go. He cursed his luck and gripped the shaft tighter, finding much comfort in the shoddy weapon he constructed out of household supplies. But as soon as he tip-toed his way there, the sound of rummaging caught the duo's attention. They turned around and saw Meowth cleaving through the trash can to look for something, it's back were facing against them, yet it's nose began to pick up the scent of fresh meat. It slowly turned around, it's animalistic growls and coin gem adoring on the forehead was stained with blood. What gave the infected pokemon away however, was the bright red glow of his eyes that lit up in the most ominous and bloodthirsty manner.

"H-Hey kitty." The blinding speed of the feline was impeccable, it effortlessly snapped the broom handle in half with its sharp serrated claws. Without a command for Ash, Pikachu leaped to action by slamming it's tail against the Meowth, knocking it off his trainer. Recomposed and out of immediate danger, Ash stood behind Pikachu and resume command of his pokemon.

"Pikachu Thundershock." The swift electric attack knocked the Meowth down, the tingly electricity was effective at pacifying opposing pokemon and rendering them harmless. Ash took a deep breath and stared at his broken weapon, at the very least he could use his weapon like a one handed axe. He tossed the lower shaft on the ground and patted his starter, he had lost count how many times Pikachu sprung into action just to save his life.

"That was a close one, thanks Pikachu." A thumbs up from his starter brought a smile to the young student, it seems Meowths are infected too. He reached for his notebook and jot down the species of infected pokemon he came across, something wasn't right. Up until now, he had only seen Rattata, Pidgeys and now a Meowth. But police and military owned pokemon like Machamps and Arcanines are nowhere to be seen, could it be that the virus infect certain species of pokemon? Is it link to egg groups or evolution stages? What if Pikachu gets bitten and infected? Did he have the heart to-

"Pikapi?" The soft pat to the face by his starter broke Ash out of his stupor, he bit his lower lip and felt his heart race at the thought of hurting his own starter. The adorable features and the cute little head tilt he did warmed his heart, he dropped his makeshift weapon and pulled his starter for a tender embrace, Pikachu would not hurt him, he was sure of it.

"Sorry buddy but- I just wanna hug." The electric mouse was confused but he would not deny anyone deserving of his hugs, and Ash is plenty qualified! The affable mouse squeaked and placed its stubby paws on his trainer's chest, hugging him back as a show of reciprocated affection. The young man pulled back and stared at his starter's eyes, although it was a painful thought, he must face the reality that his starter as the potential to be infected too. But for now they have each other, and he intend it to remain that way.

"The apartment block is just right over there, let's go buddy." Pikachu nodded and leaped off his trainer, he could tell Ash was in deep conflict and turmoil, emotionally disturbed even. It would give him the time needed to process this, humans cope with grief differently from pokemon after all. The pair of friends soon reach the downtown area, and Ash's first instinct is to loot the convenience store for canned food or fresh water. They were in luck because tin food like spam, baked beans, dry curry and sardine were still on the shelves. Interestingly, the rows of toilet paper remains elusive. Ash had previously heard reports of panic buying after the national broadcast, but he assumed essentials like food, water, hand sanitizer, pokepuffs and masks would be sold out, not toilet paper rolls.

'I should probably stock up on water bottles too.' Alas, his bag can only carry so much. The canned food were heavy in itself and a few bottles of water would add on serious weight to him. So without overloading himself and become over encumbered, he pack the absolute essentials and left out the sugary drinks and pastries. This place hasn't been ransacked as he thought, perhaps most of the people already fled or turned.

"Pikapi!" The sudden cry from his starter swiftly earned Ash's attention, he ran to him and looked around for any sign of danger. He narrowed his eyes and surveyed the junction outside of the convenient store. The source of the disturbance became gradually apparent as Ash's eyes trailed the apartment complex building that had infected humans storming the stairs and lobby. The anomalous situation was further exacerbated by the loud blaring sounds being screamed by a pair of speakers, blasting out loud rock music in the top roof. The effort seemed to draw in large amount of the infected shambling their way to the apartments. Even the skies were not spared, flocks of Pidgeys, Pidoves and Spearows can be seen flocking around the roofs of the speaker as if was a hurricane.

'Is it to draw them in?' Ash wasn't sure if it was a deliberate distraction to attract the horde or someone left it on prematurely. Logic dictates the former, hooking up the speakers on the roof and with electrical sockets and extensions was a hassle, not to mention the effort of carrying the whole damn thing. No, this has to be on purpose, the city is in total blackout now with the lack of electricity, someone with in depth technical knowledge must have fixed the speakers and wired it up. Ash slowly retreated to get a good view of the apartment, looks like an expensive high rise with the elegant crystal like design and interior-

"Wait crystal? No way this is-" His eyes scanned the building until he spotted the name that sent a chill down his spine. There was no about it, the signage at lobby of the apartment read Crystal Clave apartments. His heart sank at the sight of zombies crawling all over the apartment area, there was no way that Giselle's friends are alive. Even if they barricaded themselves within, there were simply too many of them to fight through. He clenched his fists over his helplessness, he couldn't imagine if his own mother was trapped there and you're forced to watch in horror and despair. His cap lowered to shield his eyes from shame and guilt, he really wish he could do something but chances are, all of her friends had turned into one of them.

"The complex is flooded with them, I'm sorry Giselle." Pikachu nuzzled his trainer's cheek to cheer him up, his trainer's sympathetic nature was honestly his sweetest trait. The electric mouse rested its cheeks on Ash's face a moment as it felt Ash patting his head as thanks, the emotional supportive pokemon is always cheer him up. The furry friend looked gazed upon the tower of infected that threated to spill over from the high floors and windows, this was truly horrifying, thankfully they are a distance away.

"Golem!" The triumphant sound of the fierce Golem shouting his names to the heaven caught Ash and Pikachu by surprised. They looked around frantically, they recognize that sound everywhere. They followed the source of the sound and found the Megaton pokemon slamming and throwing large boulders at the infected. The absolute devastation inflicted by the rock type cannot be understated, throwing boulder after boulder, vehicle after vehicle, it was almost as if this was what its made to do. Yet Ash was more concerned about the trainer herself, he looked around and noticed Miss Roxanne standing all top of a large rock pillar, completely out of the reach of the human infected as they huddled numbly below her. He narrowed his eyes when he heard a series of caws and squawks become louder, he recognize that damn cry anywhere.

"Pidgeys?!" The flying pokemon had now descended from the skies, casting dark shadows across the streets as if the reaper had came. Stranded at the construct her Golem created, Roxanne could only watch in horror as the infected pokemon drew closer. Her Golem gritted and slammed the ground to create a flight of stone stairs that protruded from the ground. Seeing the chance, Ash ordered a counterattack to bring down the flock.

"Pikachu Thunderbolt!" The searing bolt of electricity zapped the flock, yet that did little to halt their advances. Squads of pokemon circled around them, divebombing them one by one to confused and overwhelm them. Roxanne stunned by the sight of Ash appearing right in front of her, found her arm being tugged by Ash as he yanked her to his side after descending the makeshift stone stairs.

"Come with me! Golem clear us a path!" The rock type grunted to Ash's request and stomped the ground, reaffirming his footing and bulldozing everything in their path. Pikachu took care of the aerial assault, rapidly firing streaks of lightning towards the foes that strayed too near to them. The onslaught continue, attracting the attention of the horde that stormed the Crystal Clave apartment. Their sights were set on two juicy human running towards their general direction and that was the prompt they needed to chase after them.

"Ash!" The young man swore a bunch of profanities as zombies began to run towards them, toppling over vehicles and each other as they attempt to run them down. He frantically looked around for a potential solution until he felt Miss Roxanne pulling his sleeves, she pointed towards a fire escape of a building that had a ladder connecting to the ground.

"Up the fire escapes, Pikachu destroy the escape once we're up." The electric mouse nodded and use it's innate agility to get up there first. It began shooting down the aerial enemies as Golem stayed near the ladder and form a giant fissure to halt the horde's advancement. The shaky grounds nearly knock both humans off their balance, but they persevere through and climbed the fire escape stairs, reaching the top of the building as Pikachu successfully defended them from the incursions. With the humans safe, Pikachu and Golem worked together to break off the fire escape and ushered their trainers to enter the door, sealing the entrance shut in the process.

Their thumping heartbeat echoed across the stairwell, by the noise of the infected gradually subsided, providing all of them with much reprieve. Ash patted Pikachu's head before turning to Roxanne to check for any sighs of injuries. He placed a hand on her shoulder, only to realized her clenched fists that shook violently by the side.

"Miss-" A firm slap on his cheek froze everyone in the room, Golem and Pikachu gasped at the sight of Roxanne glaring at Ash. The poor man barely had the time to register what was happening when he felt Roxanne yanking his collar roughly, pulling him up his feet as his eyes dilated at the sight of his pissed off and cross teacher.

"You fool! What the hell you're thinking Ash!? I told you stay inside the school didn't I?" The young man felt his eyes swell, he knew he disobeyed a direct order from her but he was worried for her.

"I-I was worried-"

"I don't need your worry, I need your cooperation! Stay here." The cold authoritative voice laced with anger silenced Ash immediately, she let go of him and walked down the stairwell to reach the top floor office. The lavish and modern looking office had open desk, meeting rooms and receptionist desk. It is a corporate lot for small and upcoming companies with plenty of natural lighting seeping in. Roxanne pulled her backpack and placed it down on a desk, rummaging through the contents to keep check of everything.

"Painkillers, panadol and First Aid kits. More disinfectants and gauzes, perfect." The complete silence from the office earned a small sigh, she shifted her head to aside to get a glimpse of Ash but he was distant and far away from her, sitting on the flight of stairs with Pikachu consoling him. Her heart clenched at the sight, all of her years as a teacher she never resorted to physical reprimands. To directly slap a student who ran out of the safety of the compound just for her sake was cruel and perhaps uncalled for, but she had to properly teach Ash that not obeying orders from superiors or guardians can be disastrous. Everyone needs to be in sync and in the same page when dealing with disasters, no playing the hero or attaining personal glory. The young teacher gripped the bag tighter, it was a harsh but necessary lesson to teach Ash, especially during the early days.

The sound of glass shattering earned their attention, Roxanne peered outside the office window and gasped at the sight of a young woman climbing out of the window of the high rise building. The young lady had long blonde hair with blue stripes and pink tips, she wore a pair of red overalls and a white shoulderless shirt with a folded collar. Despite her eye catching appearance and attire, she was woefully underprepared for what lies ahead. In her state of pure terror and dread, she shakily extended her legs outward the window of her apartment. Her legs crossed over the window shards as she began to slowly walk on the ledge, she bit her lower lip and pulled a wooden door that seemed to belong to a wardrobe.

'That must be Risa!' There was no doubt about it, Roxanne had seen her before in school. She narrowed her eyes and surveyed the area, the situation was not ideal at the slightest. Her Golem can't take all of them at once, even if he can, his preferred method of attacking is cannonballing and exploding everything there at once, potentially collapsing and bringing down the entire apartment. Not to mention they would be left defenseless if Golem decides to intervene all alone without her commands. It was a very difficult decision to make, but Roxanne needs to-

"Miss! Is that Risa?" She slowly turned to him and felt her heart clenched at the sight of Ash's shocked and helplessness state. She watched him clenched his fists as Risa struggled to pushed the broken wardrobe door to the other side of the apartment balcony, forming a makeshift bridge, sturdy and long enough for her to crawl over. She closed her eyes from looking down and shakily moved one hand forward ever so slowly.

"Ash, we can't. There is too many of them, we barely made it out ourselves. Let's go before- ASH!" The young man already climbed out of the window at the moment, his feet touching the ledge and overhang. Hands on the brick walls, he felt the contours and rough concrete on his finger tips as he slowly found a way down. He glanced at the zombies that piled on top one another and ignored his teacher's protests and cries. If he does not act now, Risa would be swarmed by them.

"Pikachu I'm counting on you buddy." The electric mouse nodded, he looked at the power lines that connected between the buildings and knew what his trainer was asking of him. Swiftly as he go, the electric mouse darted across the utility poles and began to charge up electricity through friction and momentum base energy, it leaped in the air and dispatched the remnants of the flying Pidgeys, shooting them out of the sky and pinning them to the ground. The young teenager froze at the sight of a cuddly Pikachu aiding her, but swiftly realized that it was under the command of a trainer.

"Run Risa!" The shout from across the building caught her attention, a young man was seen ushering her from a ledge. She felt instant relief at a human face and pushed her legs forward and ran as fast as her legs can carry her, the fracturing pain in her joints and bones were beyond terminal and painful, but she persevere through the pain and pushed herself forward. She reached the other side of the balcony and realized she would need to descend down the buildings roof tops with zeds swarming below her, waiting for her to slip and fall. Seeing the dire situation, Ash was quick to come with a solution that would surely led the infected astray. Steady as he goes, his footing retained a strong grip on the ledge before he leaped forward to the lower ledges of the air conditioning units outside of the building. The sheer body weight and impact almost yanked the whole thing off, but fortunately, the metal brackets and bolts managed to secure the whole unit intact despite years of rust and corrosion.

With his trainer's questionable descent to the ground, Pikachu led on Risa to the edge of the balcony and pointed at the roof top of the pharmaceutical building in front of her. The young lady paused once she realized she had to do a huge leap over the next building, she bit her lower lip as the sound of the infected clawing and groaning grew louder by the second. Flocks of Pidgeys while small in size, still posed a huge threat to her. Her confidence dwindled as she began to walk backwards, she couldn't possibly make that jump! She trained her whole life running as an athlete and now she was robbed of that because of a bad fall that she was still recovering from.

"No I- I can't do this." Her anxiety was rapidly overwhelming her, the mere thought of falling down from such a distance and height just paralyzed her whole body. Even with the sound of imminent death crawling towards her, Risa still found her confidence faltering. Her legs would just be sprained before she could even jump and she would tumble to her death. Sensing the anxiety within her, Pikachu was quick to assume the supportive role by standing before the edge of the building and give her a support fist pump to the air.

"I- I can't! It's too far! My leg hasn't recovered yet." The young woman's hushed explanation was met with a shook of a head by the discerning Pikachu, he won't give up on her yet! It turned to the horde of infected pouring out of the windows, some scratched and gnaw their way through the glass shards just to reach out to them, rapidly bleeding out in the process as their flesh got hooked between them. For now they have time, the flying infected had largely dispersed for the moment. Amidst her frightened and panic state, Ash stood in the streets below her and shouted to her, not caring if he was drawing in the attention of the infected.

"Yes you can! I believe in you, Giselle believes in you! Everyone is waiting for you! Come on do it!" His screaming and presence caught the attention of the infected. They switched targets to an easier prey and rushed towards him, just as Ash planned. With the swarm of infected rushing towards Ash, Risa was pressured with the choice of making the jump after Ash's valiant sacrifice. Just, why is this random stranger is doing so much for her? Her answer received no reply and yet she knew she could not squander the chance Ash had given her. She took a deep breath and focused her toes, she slowly walked backwards to distance herself before finally, feeling the spark that ignited her love for running. The thrill, the breeze, the adrenaline, all of it came back to her at that very moment.

She bolted forward and slammed one feet down to propel herself upward, leaping high in the air despite the pain in her joints. She gave a loud panic scream as she began to fall until she landed on the roofs, she tumbled forward with her legs and arms tucked inward, rolling against the roof to dissipate the impact and energy of the fall. Alas, her legs still took a majority of the shock and the sheer distance was damaging to her body, causing bruises and scars to her arms.

"Pika!" The electric mouse was quick to help her up, but the pain was numbing Risa sense of urgency and security. She dismissed his efforts and tried to push him away, ushering him to leave her.

"Urgh, please just go. My legs hasn't recovered from my injuries." Writhe and turn, Risa chattered her teeth to suppress the pain coursing towards her body. But the sound of a door slamming against a wall caught everyone's attention, Pikachu assumed combative stance and was ready to unleash volts of electricity against the infected rushing through the roof door when a panting Ash appeared.

"Pikapi!" Amazed at his trainer's ability to run away from zombies completely unscathed, Pikachu cheered in joy as his trainer rushed to Risa's side and carried her. Locking her hands together around Ash's neck, she felt him holding on to her thighs in a piggy-back. She groaned at the pain and the strenuous muscles being pulled, her whole body feels like it was under duress.

"Risa, come on." Ash halted as he heard the sound of infected echoing from the stairwell, he honestly thought the metal lock doors of the pharmacy was enough to halt them. Seems like he was wrong, with no alternatives, Ash looked downwards at the building and was not amused by the sight of the zombies swiping their hands in the air, wailing at the sight of two fresh human feast.

"Just leave please, it's not worth saving me." The genuine plead in her voice was heartbreaking, but Ash was having none of it. He is saving her, and they are going to make it out of here alive. His electric buddy stood ready as it rapidly charged up electricity, it would direly drain him but if he can deliver one power bolt that decimates and destroy the entire stairwell connecting to the roofs, none of the grounded infected can reach them.

"Stone wall!" The sudden sound of rocks protruding upwards earned the attention, jagged rocks and giant pillars began to appear on the surface streets before it began to fall against the side of building of the pharmacy by Golem's sheer strength, the slanting flat smooth surface of the wall was instantly understood by Ash. He placed Risa on the edge of the building and placed her two legs on the surface of slanted pillar, this was a makeshift slide for them. He swiftly sat behind Risa and placed his hands around her waist to firmly hold her between his legs, she panicked at sudden implication of sliding down from a tall building, she turned to face Ash only to see his determined and focus look.

"A-Ash are you- WAH!" The poor lass barely had the time to speak when Ash pushed his body to slide downward, the friction slowed down the speed but the incline allowed gravity to do its work as the two managed to safely slide down to the ground. Golem grinned at the sight of the two humans landing next to his mistress and began to lodge the rest of the jagged boulders at the pharmacy doors to contain the infected inside the building. Try as their might, their combined strength is not going to move a mountain!

"Let's go quick!" Roxanne took Risa from Ash and slung the former star athlete's arm over her neck, with her arm scooping up Risa's leg and back in her arms. They ran towards the direction of the school, the infected that previously stormed the apartment complex had poured into the streets in the hundreds or even thousands, though Golem had used a mixture of fissures and rock constructs to block their path, infected still managed to slip through from the cracks and pulled themselves forward to chase after them despite severed limbs and disemboweled bodies. Pikachu fire a barrage of attacks at them, the various zaps and electrocutions barely left a dent in the numbers. Where did all the infected came from? Where they really human before? A city of million strong reduced to depraved infected abominations that craved for flesh? The company continue to run towards the school, cleared of the infected, they see the very salvation of the compound surrounded in a fortress of pure steel walls.

"Aggron!" The sound of a mighty roar came in response to Roxanne's shouts, it's hindlegs quake the earth it stood before it burst through the very walls it painstakingly built, defeating the purpose of an impenetrable wall. It paused at it's dramatic entry before staring back at the gaping hole perforated by its steel hull body. He turned back to his trainer, ignoring his blunder by pretending the hole didn't exist and that it was all part of its brilliant plan. It roared to power itself up as it emit a white glow to coat itself in an extra plate of armor that covered its face with it makeshift steel visor, jagged spikes and serrated claws protruded outward. It let out a defeaning screech and charged forward the very horde that ran after its trainer, effortless piledriving through the cretins that trembled and fell to its brutish strength. However Aggron was not the sole defender of the school, soldiers dressed in military garb rushed from the hole of the wall with their partner pokemon side by side. The small contingent soldiers knelt down and aligned their firearms to the sight of the infected, with their mighty pokemon awaiting their command.

"Infected insight! FIRE!" Ash shielded Risa and himself from the flares of bullets and streams of fire, he carried her in his arms and dived to aside with Miss Roxanne hugging them tight to her. She placed her hands against their ears and breathed a sign of relief when Golem managed to quickly form a stone wall fortification to shield themselves from stray bullets or wild fires that raged out of control. The screeching sound of fire burning and peeling of flesh was agonizing, the horrid screams and desperate cries for help was the closest reminder of their humanity. It swiftly reminded everyone that these were zombies that were not reanimated by the dead or are monsters from the myth, these were people who had lives, dreams aspirations and once shared a commute with them. But as the gun fire mow down the horde and the sound of fire and fury subsided, Golem unshielded everyone and the gruesome of bodies being layered on the floor or flayed alive were for all to see. Good Arceus, was the sight repulsive.

Ash was quick to shield Risa's eyes as she was still shaking in fear, while it was naive to think he can protect her mind from the horrors of what is happening before him, a part of Ash desperately want to retain the innocence of those around him for their sake.

"I-Is it over?" The timid nature in her voice made Ash sighed, was this honestly their reality right now? He felt the warm hand on top of his own, holding on to him desperately afraid to let go. He eyed her fragile state and found his lips curled upwards, the sense of protecting someone honestly gave himself more confidence and happiness that he couldn't quite describe. It was risky and stupid for him to save someone he barely knew, but if getting through this damn pandemic relies only on cold logical thinking and forgoing compassion for efficiency, then Ash must question whether it's worth living in a world as cruel as this. Logically speaking, risking his life to travel all the way from Saffron to Pallet Town just to see his mom is an irrational move, yet he is still going to commit to it regardless. She is his motivation, a driving force to live another day in this sea of utter despair.

"Yeah, let's just head to the school." He pulled her toward the school where all of their friends can be see with their bags on them. He smiled at the sight of Giselle frantically running towards them, he pry he hands away from Risa's eyes and allowed her eyes to rest on the only view that matters.

"Risa!" The star athlete was blinded by the momentarily sunlight before a bone-crushing hug from her friend quickly caught her by surprised. She took a moment to adjust to everything before realizing who was hugging her. The squeals of joys and the cheerful reunion erupted from everyone, a happy occasion is always worth celebrating in times of peace, but times of strife make these moments even more special, and precious. Ash seized the chance to take a breather, he actively ignored the disastrous view behind him and walked towards the compound of the school with Pikachu perched on his shoulder.

With the students safe, the elite strike force team surveyed their surroundings and confirm the death of the infected. A man in a hulking armor akin to mechanized bomb suit grunted, it gave a firm pat on his Magmortar's back for a job well done. It's fiery magma and explosions smoked the entire field, and combined with the usage of special poisonous napalm coating that was applied to it's Flamethrower and Fire blast attacks, the literal scorched earth tactics effectively wiped all life out.

"Targets neutralized, napalm and mortar has been deployed." The almost cheerful tone from the hulking man with a booming deep voice earned the scoff from the squadron captain whom seemed unimpressed. Their complete indifference and desensitization towards the carnage they unleashed was a testament to their experience and professionalism in their line of work. They pulled the safety trigger of their weapon and slung the strap over their shoulders. The captain eyed Miss Roxanne and Fantina conversing in a corner, her Aggron was soaked in blood dripping from the wedges and gaps of its armor. How are an elegant looking woman was capable of commanding a hulking beast that can tear down skyscrapers and fortresses was honestly intriguing if not downright terrifying.

"Ash right? Thank you so much! I- I owe you." The seasoned soldier's lips curled upwards, the sight of teenagers acting all awkward and flustered around each other brings him back to his own teenage years. His eyes darted towards the carnage of infected and whistled at the sight, according to security intel most of the infected in the city were exterminated by a mixture of air strikes and pokemon raids. Few pockets of the infected remain but majority of the zombies were smoked, only the wild infected remain as a substantial threat.

"No problem, glad you're okay." The two teenager exchanged a hug, with the older girl hugging the younger junior tight to her. The brief exchange was sweet, a decisive victory all things considered. Zombies killed, survivors saved, a job's well done. The captain turned to this subordinates who finished surveying the area, they gave a nod to him and ushered him to contact mission control, to which he obliged.

"Sir this is Alpha Squad, we have secured the survivors, making our way towards extraction point. Yes, Miss Roxanne is among them and- what? Of course sir. Understood." The rest of the squadron exchanged concerned looks, seems like their mission has changed. The captain wordlessly walked to Roxanne and Fantina, his voice stressing authority and urgency.

"Miss Roxanne, Miss Fantina you two are coming with Shadow on the helicopter." The two teachers blinked at the command and crossed their arms, the squadron of soldiers had shortly arrived after Fantina's Mismagius scouted them out prior and led them to the school. They secured the surrounding area of the school grounds and establish a perimeter. It was safe to assume they were here to look for any remaining survivors and escort them to the nearby Townhall, the last bastion of Saffron City where the infected had yet breached.

"What? What about our students?" The subtle anger in Roxanne's voice drew a chill down the grizzled commander's spine, the protective instincts of a teacher cannot be underestimated. Yet he had his orders, orders that frankly left him confused, but good soldiers follow orders, not questioning or disobeying them.

"Rest assured, my boys would keep them safe. You two are needed else where." The teachers were not convinced as the rest of the students rally behind their teacher, to separate them from the two people who actively looked out for them were a scary thought. They didn't trust the soldiers who appeared out of nowhere nor were they ready to embark on a lengthy journey to reach the Townhall, the suppose safe haven for them. They were content in the familiar grounds of their high school where seemingly everything is provided to them.

"I refuse! My students need me. Many them are international students with no guardians here!" The captain sighed and raised his voice just slight, civilian cooperation has always been difficult in times of crisis.

"This is a direct order from the army, martial law and essential powers have already been invoked, the army has full authority and administrative powers. Please cooperate miss." Roxanne narrowed her eyes, she would not be persuaded by mere martial orders or law. She attempted to argue her case when Fantina placed a firm hand on her shoulder, ushering her not to disobey the orders and merely follow along.

"Rox, they stand a better chance with them." The Hoenn native bit her lower lip, she knew that. The army has far more resources, manpower and control over two teachers who struggle to keep their own lives in tact. It just didn't sit right with Roxanne to abandoned her students during these distressful times, a time where they need guidance and counsel from a caring adult. However logic and rational thinking prevailed, chances are the military are enlisting her skills as a former gym leader and expert knowledge over rock type pokemon. She and Fantina can provide better value helping the military resolving this threat than looking after her students.

"If anything happens to my students, I would personally have your head." The sight of the Aggron slowly turning its head to face the soldiers drew a symphony of vigorous nodding from them. The bulking iron beast was still dripping the blood of its victims, a harsh reminder of what it's capable of to even trained soldiers like them.

"Yes ma'am." The rock type specialist closed her eyes briefly and faced her students, the sorrowful look on their faces was hard to bear but this was necessary. She slowly approached all of them and struggled to find the right words and sentences, what could she possibly say at a time likes this? She swore a solemn oath that she would care and protect her students and now she would have to break that vow.

"Everyone, please look after each other. I wish I can stay but- looks like I have been deferred." The uneasy looks between the students were evident, but none were protesting or objecting against it. These were direct orders from the military and army, like it or not they must abide to the rule of law, or what's left of it.

"It's okay miss, we would be fine. Thank you for everything." Hugs were exchanged between students and teachers, Fantina failed to hold back her tears when her students crashed into her arms, sobbing out of sorrow and gratitude for what she has done for them. It was an emotional sight, so much so it caught the veteran soldiers off guard by the sheer brutality of the situation. These were just children, forced to live in a world where their dreams and future are tarnished. What horrors awaits them tomorrow would be a question on itself.

"Please keep each other safe." As the hugs and teary goodbyes inch closer to Ash, the young man stood uncharacteristically far away from the rest of the group. He stoically watched the entire scene with Pikachu leaning on his shoulders when Roxanne finally stood before him. Her ruby red eyes stared right through his hazel brown ones, her mind replaying the memory that occurred at the roof tops.

"Ash." The Pallet Town native shuffled in uneasily, he managed an awkward nod when Roxanne enveloped him in a warm crushing hug. Her bosom pinned against his chest as her nose buried between the side of his neck, instinctively he wrapped his arms around her back, feeling her warmth and quaking body that shuddered from exhaustion.

"I'm glad you're okay. Ash what happened earlier- I didn't mean it, I just lost control." He knew that, he was just so caught off guard by the slap that it took him a while to process it. Deep down, when he jumped out of the window to save Risa, it was partially out of petty spite to defy his teacher's orders, purposefully going against her exact wishes just to get back at her. It wasn't until he saw the true gravity of the infected when he realized what Miss Roxanne was actively trying to do, protecting him from the horrific realities of the situation. When he shielded Risa's eyes and actively put her safety before his own, it became clear to Ash that his teacher was just doing the same for him.

"I know." His low whisper echoed across her ears, though all eyes of the crowd were on them, they cared little of what they thought of them. The sudden dampness on his shoulders and the sniffles that accompanied it made Ash hug her tighter, placing his nose against her soft luscious hair. His hands tenderly rubbed her back, feeling the bra straps and warm body that tingled his fingertips.

"If anything happens to you because of me I-" He pressed his lips against her forehead to silence those thoughts, not caring about the consequences of such affection being displayed publicly. He focused on comforting her now, the now was more important than the later. While a breach of conduct in teacher-student relationship, at this point Ash cared little about societal taboo in a country where society had already broken down.

"Shh it's okay. I'm sorry for worrying you. I know I should have listened and stay put- it's my fault." Perhaps it was the closure and solace needed from each other, but these past two days had been an incredibly difficult situation for both of them. Pikachu smiled in approval at his trainer's demeanor and attitude, admitting fault and being emotionally open to others is good for a growing man like him. Men are always expected to be tough and stoic all the time, so a little compassion and emotional intelligence goes a long way in building character and confidence. In a world where lawlessness persist, being kind and merciful to others would now be an exception, not the rule.

"Uh ma'am, we have to go soon." The awkward tone from the head soldier finally forced the two apart, Roxanne's face flushed lightly at the embarrassing nature of her own tears, but was nevertheless glad she managed to make up with Ash. She cupped the very cheek where she slapped him and stroke them delicately with her thumb.

"Take care, Ash. I really wish I can stay but- something is going on, I promise you I would get to the bottom of this." The determined tone from his teacher earned a nod from the young man. She gingerly retracted her hand and averted her gaze from Ash for a moment, before walking to the direction of the helicopter than stood in the courtyard of the school. The prim and proper teacher ignored the smug look from Fantina, the dry teasing smile that slowly grew wider was the bane of her existence.

"Excuse me sir, I have a question." The captain blinked and turned towards Chase, the young man's Charmander stood next to him and remain vigilant as ever. A full grown Charizard would be invaluable in a situation like this, a powerhouse, a fire type but most importantly of all, the access to airborne transportation.

"What is it kid?"

"Any news of the other cities?" The captain sighed and shook his head, he dearly wished he knew the answer too.

"Unfortunately communications are down, we have to use our psychic pokemon to form mental links to pass information, so update is slow. But what I heard is that most of the cities had hold out against the attacks, the pokemon seemed to come in waves. Pewter City is ground zero and was hit the hardest, the entire city was just overrun and lost." The frank revelation froze all the students, Pewter City was lost? It's situated at valleys and mountains, its high vantage point provides it strategic value in defending cities and forts as the natural mountainous terrain makes it difficult for invaders to cross over. So to hear the Mountainous city was lost day two of the outbreak was just unfathomable.

"W-What about Pallet Town?" The captain shook his head immediately, he knows nothing of small towns. Other than major cities that have strong military presence, small towns and farmhouses are on their own.

"Nothing about it, no one is interested in defending a small town that does not provide any strategic value, I'm sorry to break it to you." Pikachu's ear dropped immediately hearing the news, it nuzzled its trainer to comfort him but the crestfallen expression on Ash's face drew sympathetic looks from everyone. Risa and May patted Ash's shoulders and pulled him into a hug, though they don't know him that well, they deduced that Pallet Town was Ash's hometown and like most students studying in Saffron Academy, their hometown is where their parents live.

"You from there kid?"

"Yes, my mom is there." The continent of soldiers looked amongst each other, they knew that a small town stood no chance against infected pokemon that can tear them apart. Pallet Town however was slightly different, Professor Oak's laboratory host a variety of powerful pokemon, not to mention that Old Oak was the first Pokemon Champion ever crowned. His extensive experience in dealing with crisis and excellent leadership skills should theoretically allow Pallet Town to sail through the storm unscathed. But then again, that can be applied to every city with a known authority and army.

"Listen, chances are-"

"No! I don't want to hear it! I need to see her myself!" The outburst was expected from him, the squadron captain narrowed his eyes, the kid got determination but whether he can manage himself alone out there is a different matter. His pensive thoughts was interrupted when Shadow, the scout operative and helicopter pilot appeared behind him.

"Sir, we have to depart soon, weather is looking foggy." The dreaded monsoon season posed a hassle to logistics and wartime efforts, disrupting operations and reconnaissance efforts. They have to seize the oppurtunity to leave while sunlight and clear weather is in abundance. The head captain turned to Ash and raised his voice to assert his authority.

"I take it you're not coming with us to the Town Hall huh." Ash vehemently shook his head, he has already made his decision to go back home. Now with Roxanne gone, he has even less incentive to stay behind. He is determined to head back home, military orders and martial law be damned.

"I'm not, I'm going home. You can let me go and pretend I'm dead." The bold statement from him drew audible gasp from his friends, they plead him to stay and think rationally, urging him to stay with them until the situation blow over.

"Ash!" Chase gripped his arm tight, refusing to let go of him as Ash remained unmoved and unyielding. The decision has already been set, he is going home. Seeing the young man's stubbornness and determination, the captain nodded to himself before making a resolute decision, his superiors may reprimand him for this, but he see no harm letting a young man like him to decide his own fate and destiny.

"Jenkins! Your spare." Instantly, a man dressed in navy blue uniform and a beret swiftly took his handgun from his holster. He twirled the weapon and around before placing it firmly on his commanding officer's hand. Firmly in hand, the captain presented Ash a weapon he was intimately familiar, at least when it comes to modern shooter video games.

"Beretta M9, standard firearm for most military forces. Uses 9mm, the most common type of ammunition lying around even in civilian homes. Ever fire a gun?" The loud whispers from the students did little to change Ash's expression, he stared at the gun before him and found himself drawn to it. Was the captain serious? Was he handing him a live firearm? His only real life experience in firing a gun came from attending a shooting range with all of the boys a few months ago, just for fun. Never, would he thought that the few hours of fun and giggles would come back to help him right now.

"This is insane, you can't let Ash do this! Miss Fantina, Roxanne! Stop him!" Alas, their teacher was already sitting in the helicopter far away from them, unable to hear their pleads, leaving no member of authority being able to challenge the soldiers. Dawn bit her lower lip as Ash slowly reached for the gun, his finger far away from the trigger.

"I-I went to a shooting range with friends once." The captain beamed and nodded, that's all he needed to hear, he is practically good to go.

"That's enough then, you would learn to use it soon enough. The basics like gun safety, cleaning the chamber and trigger discipline should already be taught. Only fire it as a last resort and keep the gun with you when you run out of bullets, it's a good intimidation tool." The slow realization of using the gun crept onto Ash, using a makeshift weapon to dispatch zombies seemed so different than actually using a gun. It was hypocritical for Ash to say this, but he find it more humanizing using a shoddy household weapon than using a weapon designed to kill. Seeing the silence and conflict from the young man, Jenkins walked forward and placed a firm hand on Ash's shoulder.

"Hey, they aren't human anymore, it's a matter of life or death. As for the pokemon, you think a few bullets would kill them? They can survive a Flamethrower to the face, survive lightning bolt attacks and having entire boulders being dropped on them, and they still be alive and kicking! The most you do to them is stagger, incapacitate or faint them after emptying a whole magazine on them. The gun is for humans, infected or not. Let your pokemon do what they do best." Pikachu listened intently to the man's words, what he say is true. Pokemon are remarkably durable and sturdy, even Rattatas and first form pokemon are resistant to bullets and slashes. No, Ash would be using the gun on the infected humans, just like the video games he always play, except this time they were real world targets.

"Yes sir, thank you." Ash held the gun in his hand and examined it, everything from the inscription and signage, to the firm grip and iron sight, this was a real gun in his hands. He double checked the safety of the gun and ejected the magazine out, a full 15 rounds prime and loaded. He slammed the magazine back to the compartment and stuff it on his belt. No spare holster or tactical belt for him to hold firearms or pouches to store bullets.

"Captain, we really need to get going." Shadow spoke with a hint of frustration and concern in his voice, they can't afford to delay their flight. The captain nodded and gave his squadron their order, no more dillydallying now. Flying in fog or rime is just asking for a turbulence experience.

"Aye, Jenkins you go with Shadow. Toad, Bull follow me. Let's go kids, a Town hall visit is in order." The students slowly followed the soldiers, their hulking pokemon surrounded the students to perform a protective circles as they move towards the direction of the town hall. Chase gritted his teeth and turned to face Ash, they were seriously letting him go like that?

"Ash are you really going to Pallet Town alone? This is- you won't survive that!"

"I have to, I need get home quick. My mom needs me, I'm sorry I can't come with all of you. Until I get news about Pallet Town, I'm going there. Alone or otherwise." It was pointless to argue with him, Chase grunted in frustration and could only watch helplessly as his friend made a decision. He dearly wished he could come with him but Elaine is his priority right now, getting her to safety and staying with her is all he could hope for.

"Alright, please be careful. Come here man." The two exchange a hug, years of friendship instantly filled their mind. From cursed conversations, heartfelt camping moments and absolute idiocy shared between them, the boys cherished every moment they shared together. The two broke off the hug and nodded to each other, this might be the last time they ever see each other.

"Take care Ash." The Pallet Town native nodded and turned to Dawn and May who stood behind for him. He was mildly surprised since he was certain they went with the main group, but they each give him a snuggly hug for good luck. They whispered their blessings to him before they depart from him with misty eyes. Their new friend would be now leaving them to embark on a dangerous journey alone. But finally after bidding farewell to everyone he knew and cared for, Ash watch in silence as the group of soldiers and students walk side by side. They would be safe in the Town Hall, Ash was certain of it.

"Risa?" The sight of the girl running back towards him earned his attention, he walked towards her and was surprised when she stood before him all panting. She took a moment to catch a breath before leaning forward towards him to get him a tender kiss on the cheek. The kiss itself was soft and warm, nothing sensual or erotic in the slightest, yet the longing kiss that left Ash's heart ablaze and cheek's flushing was undeniably the highlight of his life, and that was compared to fighting a horde of zombies!

"A-As a thank you, please be careful okay? I want to see you again." The sweet and shy tone from her caught Ash in a tongue tied, he dumbly nodded to her as Pikachu snickered at his trainer's flabbergasted expression. The trope of the hero getting a kiss from the girl he saved was undeniably cheesy, but perhaps it was rooted in some form of reality. The electric mouse beamed as Risa waved farewell to them, her eyes lingered on Ash for moments on end before finally, she joined the rest of the group.

"Move out!" The militaristic marched towards the town hall begin, with the silhouette and figures of friends slowly becoming smaller and smaller. The sound of a chopper revving up with its propeller rapidly earned their attention, the high winds generated from the rapidly spinning rotor blades flapped Ash's jacket. His lips curled upwards as the helicopter took flight in the air, with Roxanne pressing her hand against the window as one last gesture of farewell to him. She looked visibly confused and horrified when she realized that Ash completely alone in the streets, her protest and concerns was silenced as the helicopter continued to fly in motion. Moments passed and the faint buzzing sound of the helicopter soon faded away. The silence set in momentarily, bitterly reminding Ash for the first time in a city of 37 million, he is now completely alone.

The young man took a moment to collect his thoughts and gave a long exhale, he was tired, dirty and covered in sweat. If he is set on setting out to Pallet Town, he must be prepared for the journey ahead. Hastiness would lead to his demise and while Ash would desperately, desperately want to reach his mother as soon as possible, he needs to ensure his own safety first.

"We are on our own now Pikachu, let's head back to the school and take a nice shower first. How does that sound?" The electric mouse saluted and obliged, what he won't give for a nice warm shower now! The two friends retreated back to the school, entering through the hole that Aggron so graciously provided for them.

Rows of books and maps stretched upon the long wooden table, the map of Kanto was distinctively marked with drawings and markings. Books containing information of prepping for an apocalypse such as bushcraft, medical books, foraging, all aligned on the table. Pikachu squeaked at his trainer's diligence, take away social media and its digital distractions, and what you have is a focused Ash who is keen on survival. Fresh from the showers and a pair of new clothes, Ash leaned on the table and placed his two hands to support his weight, he honestly feel like a commander in a conference room planning his next move.

"Okay so according to the map, the only way back to Pallet Town is through Cerulean and then Pewter City, and considering that Pewter is ground zero, we are not going through there. Trains are down because of the EMP, but I am tempted to use the train tracks to walk back home." The pen darted around the map, drawing down the list of hazards and potential issues when walking or driving there. Although using railways as a sky bridge to walk back to Pallet Town might seemed to be the safest option, the lack of scavenging opportunities such as road side stops, convivence store, gas stations and other amenities would be detrimental to Ash's hunger and thirst. Not to mention that the train stations and underground subways could be overrun with infected, leaving no room to run.

"The other way back is through taking a ferry from Vermillion City to Pallet Town harbor, but I doubt the harbors is in operation and I don't know how to use a boat." Pikachu nodded with his arms crossed. Even if there is operational boat, most of them would have been used by the other survivors. Fuel is extremely precious right now and the situation in the other cities remains murky and unknown. Vermillion City is just south of Saffron City and without Google or the internet, it was impossible to use Google Maps to calculate the duration and distance of walking from Saffron City to Vermillion. What they have, is the general direction of where Vermillion is.

"Damn it, both routes are equally as dangerous. But my best bet is through Vermillion, or if we're lucky, aircraft." The not so subtle sarcasm on his trainer's end earn a squeak from Pikachu. The electric type materialized a lightbulb above its head and began to waves it paws, grasping his trainer's attention. It flapped his paws up and down akin to a bird, telling Ash that the potential of a flying pokemon transport. It is literally the safest and most cost-efficient way to travel!

"Good thinking Pikachu! Having a flying pokemon would be useful but I didn't take the aviation courses yet, I think I'm more likely to die from falling off from 20,000 feet by slipping off accidentally than being bitten by a zombie. But! it's the safest option and I'm willing to risk it. Provided we can find some pokeballs." Pikachu giggled when Ash's patted his head for a job well done. If they do have a flying pokemon capable of transporting them in their disposal, the possibility would be limitless. The only pokemon capable of ferrying them is Pidgeots, Fearows, at least to the wild pokemon available to them near their vicinity. There is of course the concern of viral infection when catching wild pokemon that might already be infected but that would be discussed on another time.

"So we're heading south to Vermillion City, a lot of mountains and trees, so I don't think they are many zombies in sparse locations. Infected pokemon is a different matter, but they seemed to scatter off. I'm really worried of getting the virus though, it didn't seemed to be able to spread through air, but I might accidentally get blood splattered on my face. Better be safe than sorry." Ash's finger trailed the maps to Vermillion before he tapped the city on the map. If zombie games and movies rule follows, the forest and interstates are the safest routes of travel from infected. Wild pokemon can still ambush them but they seemed to follow human presence and size, so less human, less pokemon. His eyes turned to the handgun that sit on the desk, it glimmered and reflected the natural sunlight from the window.

"I have a gun but I hope I never have to use it, not to mention it's loud too." Loud gunshots seems to be a surefire way to attract hordes of infected. It is a last resort weapon at best when Ash is cornered, the primary use of the weapon is intimidation to humans. There is bound to be unsavoury bandits and crazy survivors who wished to do whatever they please, so the gun is a brilliant bargaining tool, or a swift execution. With the shadow of the bookshelves getting shorter by the minute, Ash knew that noon was fast approaching. It is time to gear up and head out.

"Let's go Pikachu." He rolled the maps and folded it, clipping it between the first pages of book. His school backpack didn't have much room for storage, so a trip down to the local camping store might be the best option here, an upgrade in storage capacity seemed to be the most logical conclusion, not to mention the canned foot and water bottles he looted from the store earlier filled up most of the space. So it was settled, heading towards the camping store for a bigger backpack and a tent is number one priority. Once he finished packing the essential, Ash and Pikachu headed outside once more. Immediately, something became apparent to Ash, the lack of a melee weapon.

'Hmm since I'm travelling on foot, I need to find something that is multipurpose.' Like any good zombie movie trope, a melee weapon that also functions as a tool is important. You would think a crowbar is the most suitable weapon, since they can be used to claw into zombie's skull and wedge between manholes or stuck doors to pry them open. But a crowbar is deceptively heavy, it's solid steel structure makes it incredibly strenuous in the wrist when swinging, not to mention the threat of getting it's teeth stuck on the skull. A couple of swings and you are out of breath. Conversely, a polearm seemed like the most optimal choice too. Reach, distance and practicality, but life is not a video game where you have an inventory that stores your items in the void and being able to pull it out at a moment's notice. It would be difficult to carry a polearm at all times, especially when going crawling over fences gates, shrubbery or thick forest with vines and bushes. Not to mention when fighting in a tight enclose environment, there is no room to leverage its reach effectively. The best compromise Ash can think of is the almighty machete, multipurpose, sharp and easy to carry with one hand, it was by far the best option he can think of at the moment. A machete can cut flesh, cut brushes and vines but also can be attached to a long shaft, forming a naginata or billhook or sort. And as far as Ash is concerned, using a naginata to cleave hordes of infected is the most badass way to go down.

"It seems the military cleared this area." Ash noticed that many of the sewers and manhole are sealed too, they knew what they are up against. The entire city seemed to be eerily quiet now, majority of the infected had largely been dealt with after all of them were attracted to the Crystal Clave speakers. The commercial mall of the Saffron is a famous hotspot for expats and locals alike, few pokemon can be seen scurrying around but none of them looked infected. Ash could barely get a glimpse at them as they all ran away from fear, undoubtedly there were pokemon owned by their owners who are now deceased or infected.

'How horrible, how would they survive?' Ash was tempted to help them but he knew that the pokemon might view him as an infected or perhaps a desperate poacher who took advantage of the situation. He sighed but pressed on regardless, his eyes landed on the camping store that was broken in thoroughly, fallen lamp poles, collapsed shelves and glass shards were the standard view of any ransacked store.

"Looks like everyone had the same idea." Still it was worth going in, he picked up his gun and held it firmly in both of his hands as Pikachu scouted in ahead, it surveyed the surrounding area and checked the various changing rooms and storage rooms, no sign of infected or any bodies for that matter, all clear! The electric mouse gave a thumbs up to Ash, letting him know that the coast is clear. The young man grinned and looked around the store, the wooden laminated floors and forest wallpapers that show beautiful outdoors landscapes were the standard of any camping store, the tents of the store was largely gone, with many of the for display ones still sitting on fake grass carpet, albeit in rough shape. His lips curled upwards at the cozy foldable chairs surrounding the plastic table, honestly it has been a dream of his to stay overnight at an IKEA or a camping gear shop.

"There has to be a small one right?" Lightweight and compact, that is Ash's motto. He surveyed around the store like an avid shopper as he eyed the price tag, this was way too expensive for the value! The size they were providing and-

'Price doesn't matter now does it?' He gripped the price tag and looked around him, these were things he couldn't possibly even dream of buying as a broke student. But now where money doesn't hold any value and that nothing truly matters, Ash is free to take anything he wants. He looked around him and settled on a small dark green tent that had a transparent plastic window that allowed him to see outside from the comforts of his tent. The nylon fabric was high quality and the interior of the tent is decently sized, there were even little hooks near the sides of the zip to hang clothes or even a lantern to illuminate the tent, not too bad.

"How about this Pikachu? Did you like it?" The electric mouse weight in his opinion, it placed it paws underneath the chin and surveyed the interior of the room. Spacious and comfy enough for Ash and him, plenty of room to play card games if they ever get bored, but the true test comes from its rain-proofing capabilities. Without warning, Pikachu leaped to the nearby water cooler machine and sat on top of the plastic bottle filled with water.

"Pika pika!" Ash was perplexed by his starter's instruction until it simulated rain by using it's paws and creating rain fall noise, truly the most adorable mime of our time. Still, Pikachu had the right idea and in some cases were even more intelligent when it comes to crisis scenario such as these, perhaps owed to pokemon's ability to detect danger and retaining their primal instinct.

"Good idea Pikachu, better test everything first." Heave and ho, Ash struggled to lift the heavy gallons of water and uncapped the cap. He breath a sigh of relief when he slammed the thing down and unscrewed the lid, with their combined strength they pour the gallons of water over tent, seeing if it can withstand the weight of the water akin to strong torrential rain and it's ability to prevent moisture and water from seeping through the fabric. The brilliant experiment was met with equally impressive results, the tent passed through all the trials and check boxes with astounding success.

"We're getting this one Pikachu." The electric type beamed as his trainer began to dismantled the tent, the various illustrations that show cased stickman dismantling the tent made it easy to follow, but also confusing, who's idea was it to draw the tent poles the same way they draw stickman limbs?

"Hold on Pikachu let me just- yeah, it's going to take a while." Given their lack of outdoor camping experience and the fact they lived sheltered lives, it was expected that they are going to fumble and figure out many things in a zombie apocalypse. Form servicing a car, fixing a punctured car tyre, to hunting Magikarps in the wilds, this was going to be a long learning process with a lot of failures and frustrations. But after the Great Tent Dismantling war had ended, Ash rolled up the still wet tent and strapped them against the backpack he had picked earlier, locking it in place.

'Now I need to find suitable clothing and the machete.' Unfortunately for them, anything resembling a weapon was already gone. The customer must have rushed in and bought everything they can used as a weapon, even walking sticks which can be made into a club or an axe were off the shelves. Ash was fortunate enough to have Pikachu by his side, a living weapon that can zap anything and everything under his command. The cityfolks who do not own a license for a pokemon knows they stand little chance against them, that is for certain.

'No wonder they panicked so much, none of them have pokemon to begin.' It was honestly a strange sight, growing up from a town where pokemon and human co-exist with one another peacefully, modern technology had replaced pokemon's traditional job and roles, perhaps the need for pokemon gradually subsided. Still, there were plenty of people in the city owning pokemon for companion sake, and they were probably the ones who survived all of this too.

"Pika." His starter pointed at an outdoor hoodie, padded with cloth that provides insulation and warmth when temperature drops low. Ash grinned at blue hoodie with navy blue sleeves and lighter shade collar, this was perfect. He can shield his head from the rain while also look fashionably stylish while doing so, a win for both practically and style. He swiftly donned the out layer of clothing and ripped off the price tag, throwing it at the nearby trash can. The padded clothing was relatively sturdy, providing Ash an extra layer of protection against bites or scratches. Weaponless, Ash headed into the storage room to look for anything of value. They were the usual mops and brooms, not useful for bonking a zombie but plenty of useful when hiking on uneven terrain or going off-road.

"Might as well carry it with me for the moment, I am really reliant on Pikachu for self-defense." With a slam of his legs, the broom brush fell immediately and what was left was the wooden shaft. He emerged from the storage room and hastily checked for the mask section for any face coverings. One of Ash's biggest concern is getting blood splashed on his face or clothes. His eyes, nose and mouth are particularly vulnerable so face covering is crucial. Though no masks were present, Ash decided to wrap a black bandana scarf around his mouth and slapped on some outdoor gloves made for rock-climbing, providing protection to his palm and hands. Food, water, map, weapons and a tent, Ash was ready to head out. He surveyed the store one last time before nodding, they was nothing left to take.

The long trek home had finally begun and Ash was not thrill at the thought of leaving the city. The threat of dying from famine and water terrified Ash, not to mention the severe toll on his physical health and legs, but he must pushed forward and brave though the dangers if he wants to reach home. He stepped out of the store and tightened the backpack to him, Pikachu sat on top of his shoulders and began to actively look out for any signs of danger. He pulled out a map of Saffron and marked the legends and locations, not having modern day technology was such a pain. If he had Google Maps or Waze, he would have figured out where to go a long time ago!

'I have to rely on road signs.' Street after street, the duo tried their best to stay out of the main roads to avoid any infected from spotting them. They were few infected Rattatas and Pidgeys hanging about, but none of them looked visibly alert. The bypass and highways were filled with vehicles broken down, toll roads lie abandoned with the dense trees providing shade to any walking traveler. Ash took the time to check each car for anything valuable, he squeezed through each space and peered through the windows. The people left in a hurry, with many of their car keys, luggage and even phones left behind.

"Pikachu can you check the car batteries?" The electric mouse saluted, it knew what must be done. It closed its eyes and sense for any electrical output from the vehicles, all of them were predictably non-functional due to the EMP, but most of them still carry electrolyte fluids that is perfect nourishment for electric type like him. Pikachu seized the chance to feed on the electricity charge, a source of food and supplements for it's electrical prowess. Ash whistled at the sight of his starter emitting power sparks, it's been ages since Pikachu was allowed to let loose and feed this much of endothermic charge. The most Ash does is buy battery packs from the store and feed it to his starter, kinda like treats!

"Careful Pikachu, don't overload yourself." The starter squeaked and stopped charging at that moment, right overindulging in electricity can hurt his biological and electrical discharge system. It places it stubby paws on its red cheeks to generate electricity, an extremely important resource during an apocalypse. It began to charged up and identified the vehicles here that is were powering up and salvaging until, he spotted it.

"Pika!" Ash followed his starter brimming with vigor and power, his face lit up once Pikachu sat on top of a motorcycle that was rather small in size. Yet the sleek black design of the bike with neon led lights adorning the rims and wheels were undeniably cool, almost like a futuristic cyberpunk looking vehicle.

"Is that an electric bike?" Pikachu nodded vehemently, the EMP only drained the vehicle of its voltage and ignition. Some vehicles and devices have built in materials or cases that protects it from electromagnetic waves, the manufacturers for these vehicles must have known about the potential threats and encased them with EMP resistant casing such as anti-radiation metals. Ash grinned and placed his hand on the handle, he had never ride a motorcycle before but he heard it's pretty similar to how one ride's a bike, so he is practically halfway there.

"Woah cool, always wanted to own a motorcycle but mom said it's too dangerous heh. Hmm voltage is a little low." In all honesty Ash has no idea how this thing work, electric vehicles are the craze these days but even he had his doubts on them. He have heard the biggest issue of E-vehicles is the low battery shelf life and the constant need for recharging, but considering he has a hyperactive Pikachu lying around, well that solves all of his problems. In theory, Ash would never need to worry on fuel or battery, in reality he is more concern about a puncture tyre or the elements wrecking the bike. They aren't build for the outdoor.

"Pikachu can you power the battery up?" The electric mouse need no introduction or explanation, it rapidly infused electricity within the bike watch it roar to life. It squeaked when Ash sat on seat and flickered on the lights, the neon lights glow it light shade of blue around the rim, the sound of its motor generating voltage and power was a sound that Ash honestly miss, albeit the sound was much more quieter compared to the gas-powered counterparts. Days without hearing a car or lorry moving by was honestly weird, so this brought back some comforting familiarity.

"Buckle up Pikachu, this is going to a ride." Ash mused over his choices and tossed the wooden broomstick on the floor, it was impractical to carry it with him on a motorcycle, hence he desire for a one armed weapon that is easy to carry. With Pikachu firmly sat in front of his chest just before the handle bars, providing the electric direct access to the control and to some extent, the ability to zap any incoming opponents without obstructing Ash's driving. Everything was in place, and Ash gripped the handlebar tight, he hit the throttle. The speed sent the passenger zooming and while Ash was definitely panicking as a newbie, he quickly got adjusted to the speed and remain total control over the vehicle as it skate across the long stretch of roads. Zip and zap, he weaved through the piles of vehicles causing a congestion and jam, the sight of infected humans slumbering against vehicles suddenly reanimating back to life caught Ash by surprised. Without a prey for them to lock on, they would lie dormant and looked like they are dead or deceased.

'That would definitely catch me off-guard if I stumble inside a building and think they are dead.' The duo blaze through the interstate bypass, Ash estimated that on foot it would literally take him a week to reach home, but given that he has a functioning vehicle, he can shortened it to three or even two days if traffic is good. Well, traffic as in infected.

"How you feeling Pikachu?" The electric mouse was having a time of his life, the breeze and the thrill of riding a vehicle, this was fantastic! Super different from sitting inside a car. The squeaks of joy from his starter brought a chuckle to Ash, all things considered, this was like a road trip. Ash had never really set out of Saffron City before so this was a brand new experience to him, the scenic view of the sea glistening the sunlight and the mountains that towered in the distance, it was all incredible. It wasn't long when they reach a large suspension bridge that stretched over the ocean. Vehicles piled up between wedges, crashing into one another with trucks and cars flipped over. There was no room for weaving in, Ash could theoretically ask Pikachu to blow everything apart, but that would severely exhaust his starter and leave nothing but burning debris blocking his path.

"Hmm looks like we need find another path." If Aggron or Golem was here, they would have bulldoze their way through and give him their signature thumbs up after destroying everything in their path. He sighed and leaned against the backrest of the bike, what do they do now? He took his bag that was strapped against the seat of the bike and pulled out a map and pen, the high winds caused the paper map to flap and rustle loudly. He narrowed his eyes once he spotted a detour of the path that leads him directly to vermillion, one which requires him to travel through mountain roads.

"Looks like we're going off road Pikachu, we need to make a u-turn." Set on the sights, Ash turned the bike around and went off the beaten track. A forest path not far from the bridge came into view and Ash was seriously questioning his own judgement of going here. The bumpy dirt track roads and the poorly suited tyre rims was not a pleasant riding experience, the suspension was almost nonexistent. But after a few minutes of dirt and mud, they reached well paved roads once more and things became smooth sailing!

Until a Mightyena ambushed them.

"Crap!" It fangs barred before it timed it pounces on the motorbike, pinning Ash down to the ground as it animalistic growling paralyzed Ash. The motorcycle skidded across the ground, rucking up dust storms as it hit the nearby tree trunk. It's bright red eyed glow ominous with the carnivorous desire to feed on human flesh, now with its prey helplessly squirming beneath it-

"Pikachu!" The powerful bolt of lightning send the dark type skidding across the ground, moments before it could bite Ash in its jugular. The Pallet Town teen recomposed himself and hastily pulled out his gun from the hoister, aiming directly at the wild wolf that was obviously infected. It growled and charged forwards, nimbly dodging all the attacks Pikachu thrown at it. Its teeth glow white and directly tackled Pikachu to the ground, delivering a powerful bite to Pikachu's body.

"PIKA!" Ash watched in horror as his starter scream in pain, anger took over him as he begin to precisely aim and fire at Mightyena. Cocked and loaded, the bullets flew with every fire, shooting directly at it's body as the sound of gunshots echoed across the woods. The canine pokemon howl in pain as the bullet dug through it's flesh while some bounce off it, inflicting substantial amount of pain. Pikachu seizing the chance engulfed itself with pure electricity and created a power Shockwave attack that subdued the dark type, paralyzing instantly.

"Makuhita!" Out of nowhere, a bulky yellow pokemon burst out of the nearby forest and tackled the Mightyena down. It relentlessly pummel the dark type, slamming its fists and palms against the Bite pokemon. To deliver one last coup de grace, it clapped Mightyena's snout with both of its palm together, sending vibration and shockwaves that shook the ground as the sheer force and impact knocked Mightyena unconscious, teetering on the edge between fainting and internal bleeding. The Hoenn fighting type gave a grunt and clenched it fists high in the air, seemingly swearing an oath to itself. With the imminent threat down, Ash rushed to Pikachu's side and hold in him in place. He bit her lower lip at the nasty bite on his starter, good Arceus, it had happened. His starter and best friend was bitten by an infected pokemon.

"P-Pikachu I- I'm so sorry." The electric type whimpered, this was not how it's supposed to end. He vowed to protect Ash and ensured that his mother and him reunite together. Now he is going to become one of those things, relentless hunting down innocence people. He didn't want to die as a monster or infected! He want to stay by Ash's side forever! The two shed tears over the inevitable, were this really the end? Any moment now Pikachu would write and twist, the virus coursing through his veins and brain before it's eye glow violently red and-

"Maku!" The duo blinked and turned to the Makuhita who aided them. It shook his head and patted Pikachu's back, it placed its arm around Pikachu and help him up its feet before puffing his chest and showing the duo an injury he sustained. The contours and shape indicated a bite, the same bite that Pikachu suffered from the Mightyena.

"D-Did Mightyena bit you too?" The mere nod from the fighting type made Ash livid, no wonder it attacked the Mightyena so brutally. Ash turned back to Pikachu and stroke its ears, he still refuse to accept that his best friend would turn in one of those things. But reality is harsh and cruel, he would be living in a fantasy if he thinks Pikachu is immune to the virus. I mean look at the Makuhita! He is infected and bitten-

"Wait and you haven't turn yet?" The Guts pokemon nodded with its arms crossed, eyeing the young human boy who seemed confused and dumbfounded. All pokemon by right should be susceptible to the virus just like humans, unless their biology is drastically different and jump between species, Makuhita should turn to. Maybe pokemon take much longer time before they show symptoms compared to humans?

"Huh, I-I thought the transformation was instant! U-Unless there is an incubation period?" The pokemon had no idea what Ash is talking about, but they assumed that maybe they take slowly to transform compared to humans. Up until they now they have not seen a single pokemon transforming before they eyes, everything they fought had always been Rattata and Pidgeys. So maybe, just maybe, they are spared from the virus.

"Pikapi." The sorrowful look on the electric pokemon was disheartening, Ash clenched his fists and stroke his ears, he is not going to abandon his best friend who risked life and limb for him. Infected or not, he was still his best friend. It may come back to bite him in the future, but Ash does not want to live in a world without his best buddy by his side.

"Pikachu... don't worry buddy, I'm not leaving you. Even if you are bitten or infected, you are still my best friend. Come on, let's get you patch up." He lifted Pikachu up in his arms and brought him to the motorcycle. The young man sighed at its rough up shape, the backpack contents all fell out when it skidded across the ground. Fortunately, Makuhita was happy to help as it lifted the motorcycle upright and wiped off the dust.

"Oh thanks Makuhita!" The fighting type flexed its muscles briefly and stood at one side, curious at how Ash is going to patch up Pikachu's injuries. With all of the belonging back to the confines of the bag, Ash took a fresh bandage out and begin to disinfect the wounds by spraying a potion over it, the wincing expression from Pikachu was expected but the little trooper brave through the pain. After wrapping the bandage around the wound, Ash patted Pikachu's head one last time before placing him on the bike.

"It's not safe here Makuhita, why don't you come with us? I don't have a pokeball but you're welcome to sit on my lap." The fighting type mulled over his choice and sighed, it pulled a red headband out from his pouch and wrapped it around his head. The insignia and Kantonian words inscribed on it was undeniably martial art inspired, dojo's motto even. Ash snapped his fingers once he realized why a trained Makuhita was out here.

"You're from Saffron Dojo? Eh no wonder you fought so well, where's your trainer?" The immediate downcast expression from the young pokemon broke Ash's heart. The silence told him everything, he didn't make it. Pikachu whimpered at the sad sight and jumped to the Makuhita's side, patting his back as a show of support.

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that." The fighting type sniffled at the lost of his trainer, that damn Mightyena was the reason why his trainer is no longer here with him. The ferocity of the dark type caught them by surprised when they were stuck on the highway traffic jam, it rammed and bit everyone it saw, turning all of them to bloodthirsty monsters. The sheer panic and horde surrounded, they didn't stand a chance. The guts pokemon blinked when he felt a warm hand patting his head, he looked upward was greeted with the smiling sight of Ash patting his head.

"Thank for saving us Makuhita, your trainer would be very proud." Tears swell from the fighting type as it bawled its eyes out, it hugged Ash's leg for comfort as it reminisce the good times with his trainer. The two friends let the Guts pokemon to sort out its emotion, consoling him by patting his back or hugging him back. The sheer brutality of the situation was a grim reminder of the horror of an infection that can turn your loved ones against you. But life goes on without you, the trio could ill afford to burn daylight in a forest. Ash had to make a move soon and who knows where would the road lead.

"We have to go soon, Makuhita are you coming with us?" The fighting type nodded vigorously, he had avenged his trainer and fulfill his promised to him. Now he is a ronin, a lone wandered with no goal in sight. Accompanying Ash seemed like a good choice, where challenges and adventures awaits him. It slammed his fists together, it was time to get the show on the road. No point dwelling on somber grounds, he must go out there and bring an end to the infected.

"Ma!" Ash's lips curled upwards, awesome! He has another pokemon with him, not his technically but he is more than willing to take him in. Having a frontline physical fighter would be incredible in this situation, a pair of muscles in moving heavy objects or destroying debris is invaluable. The only concern is fighting against infected pokemon in close range, the chances of infection is naturally high, but considering Makuhita still retains its personality and composure, it might be possible that it's species is immune to the particular type of virus causing pokemon to go berserk. Ash paused for the moment and pulled the safety of his gun to unload the magazine, he had fire four shots in total. Ammunition is scarce and Ash had always been the type to hoard everything and not use them, especially if they are very limited.

"Okay so Makuhita you can see behind me, Pikachu can see in front and the bag- hmm where do I put the bag?" Ash scratched his head, man logistics is one thing they never talked about in zombie apocalypse media. Something as simple as travelling from A to B requires so much thought and planning. Makuhita grunted and pulled a pokeball out from its pouch, the signage or the Saffron Dojo's mark was embroidered on it. Ash's widened his eyes and slowly reached for the pokeball, was he really entrusting itself to him?

"Are you sure Makuhita? You don't need to accept me as your trainer, you're free to leave anytime you want. But if you want to tag along for the ride, I can promise you that I would do my best to keep you safe." The conviction in the young man's tone was met with a nod of approval. Practically triumphs all forms of personal feelings, it's pokeball is a symbol of his fealty to his trainer, and those deserving of its strength may call upon him. Makuhita was certain his trainer would want him to move on too.

"Ma!" Ash's fingers clenched the pokeball, he held the pokemon's hand firmly into a handshake before taking the pokeball right in his palm. With a deep breath, he aimed the pokeball towards the fighting type and returned him to it's capsule, the bright energy engulf the pokemon until it dematerialized into pure concentrated energy, storing it within the metal contraption.

"Welcome to the team buddy, let's go Pikachu! We have ourselves a new friend." The Kanto electric type squealed at nodded in approval, it was time they get a new friend on board!

A few days have passed since Ash made the decisive journey to travel back home. The conditions of roads itself were frankly more horrible than he realized, it seemed that in the midst of panic and uncertainty, many roadside gas station and R & R's were ransacked or looted. Few pokemon can be seen scavenging trash cans or feeding on leftover candy bars, but most of them were docile uninfected pokemon who wished not to be disturbed. The few pokemarts that passed by seemed to have most of their supplies taken, potions, escape ropes and pokeballs, all of them were just wiped clean with the money insider the cashier untouched. People's priorities has changed from money, to essentials. His pokemon had so far no sign of turning or becoming hostile, if anything their powers seem to grow from strength to strength. It was perplexing, but if the virus infection originates from a pokerus mutation, it does explains the sudden growth in power. What it doesn't explain however, it's the immunity his pokemon somehow sustained.

At the moment Ash had yet to receive a call from anyone, he was near certain the EMP destroyed the internal circuits of his phone for good. Remnants of vehicles still working lies abundant, and Ash was tempted to ditch the electric motorcycle for a car. But logic triumphs convenience, a smaller vehicle allows him to weave between tight corners and the rechargeable nature of the motorcycle is crucial where gas pumps and stations no longer work. Now if there was an RV or a caravan lying around, then that's a different story. The two friends cruise through the sunset, the bright orange sky melted with the purples hue that cast a shadow across the countryside, if he had brought along his headphones and his phone still works, you bet Ash would be blasting vaporwave or synthwave music.

"Pi." The young man narrowed his eyes as a fallen tree obstructing the path came to view, its roots were dangling in the air yet it still looked healthy, as if someone uprooted the tree and toss it aside. He naturally slowed down the speed of the bike and grinded it to a halt. The location of the blockade was too convenient, right in the middle of the valley were vehicles are forced to go through here to reach The Gates of Vermillion City. Ash's hand instinctively reached for his gun, though he was careful not to pull it out.

"Why hello there traveler! Fancy seeing a fellow survivor." A voice shouted from the top of the trunk, a man in his 40s can be seen waving towards him. The mohawk, biker jacket getup and rough demeanor instantly identified them as the notorious Kanto Biker Group. Not exactly the nicest people you wish to come across, and given a breakdown of society, Ash knew that nothing is holding them back from doing whatever the hell they want. Bandits and highwaymen seemed to flourish in time of disorder and chaos, Ash had already anticipated this.

"H-Hi, can I help you?" The timid stature from Ash's voice was amplified when more biker members showed up with metal bats and makeshift melee weapons in their hands. Their rough and scruff pokemon such as Mankeys, Koffings and Raticates stood ready, numbering in the 20s to 30s. If Ash wants to fight his way out of this, the number disadvantage would be an issue. The leader of the group feigned sympathy and nodded, the overexaggeration in his movement seemed to indicate he practiced this routine to lure false travelers in. A tactic as old as time.

"In fact you can! My buddies and I had run into trouble lately you see, got a little tangle up with the locals." Ash maintain a cool and calm head, he assumed the locals were wild infected or people enslaved by them. This was absolutely disgusting, but Ash did not want to give away his disgust and played it cool. He firmly gripped the handle of his bike, ready to turn around if the situation calls for it.

"Oh I see." The disinterest in Ash's voice was apparent.

"Zombies hound our walls day and night, and the wild pokemon are just relentless! Please kind one, help us deal with the problem. We dearly need a electric type to run the generators and lights to help keep our community safe." Ah so that was what they want, they want to use Pikachu as a generator. The electric mouse glared and shook his head, no way he is going to help these people! Ash was bitterly angry at the request, he is not going to handover his best friend and buddy just so he can become a battery source.

"Oh dear, that does sound horrible, but I'm afraid I can't help you. I mean I'm a kid, what could I do?" At wits end at Ash's lack of cooperation, the other biker members spoke up. They lightly hit the metal bats and pipes on their hands, dried blood was evident on some of the parts.

"Handing over your bike would be a good start." The gloves are off and the facade was not needed, these people seemed to be ready to go toe to toe with a teenager. Makuhita bursted out of its pokeball once it sense confrontation and stood its ground, stomping on the road to assert its dominance and fierce nature.

"Maku!" The sight of the fighting type clobbering his fists together angrily brought laughter to the bikers. They dismissed the idea that the kid is going to fight them head on, there's no way he stands a chance! All of them outnumbered him, not to mention they have motorbikes with them.

"Come on kid, don't make it difficult for yourself. Give us your pokemon and bike, and we will let you go." Ash narrowed his eyes, under normal circumstances he would have been intimidated and succumb to peer pressure, but the past few days had hardened him. He would not easily give into the the whims and demands of a bunch of asshole, not before, not now.

"What a deal! but I have something else better." The group of bikers blinked and leaned forward in anticipation, eagerly waiting for Ash's next move.

"And what's that?" Ash merely smiled before reached for his gun and pulled it out, aiming it directly at the leader of the biker. The sight of a mere gun invoked primal fear and to panic everyone, causing them to disperse and take cover. The main leader completely alone and paralyzed as the young teenager's steady aim was directly at him, he narrowed his eyes and slammed his fists on the bark of the trunk.

"Shit he has a gun!" The bikers scattered without order, their pokemon confused as they picked up the pace and followed their panicking trainers who sought cover. The chaos erupted allow Ash to seize the oppurtunity to order a grand entrance, he has to act now before they regroup and collect themselves. Despite their tough exterior, everyone understood the universal message of a gun despite owning pokemon that can easily overwhelmed a young child.

"Pikachu Thunderbolt the tree." More than happy to oblige, the electric type directed a thunderbolt attack to the center of the tree, breaking it to pieces as the lightning caught the wood and splinters on fire. The sheer impact and shockwave knock most of the biker gang off their footing, leaving Ash reving up the engine to break through the blockade. Makuhita jumped back into his pokeballs and slipped inside the backpack, allowing Ash to hit the throttle to its maximum speed.

"OUR DEFENCES!" They watched in horror as Ash drive through them effortlessly, with Pikachu rapidly destroying everything it sees to weakened it base structure. Fence gates, makeshift walls and sleeping quarters, all of them were fried to oblivion. Fear turned into anger as they swiftly jumped on their bikes to chase after Ash, leaving their pokemon behind as the humans were in hot pursuit. The revving of the engine and carbon emitted permeated the scene, it was all or nothing.

"Get him!" Ash glanced at the side mirror, their modified bikes are built for high speeds and rough roads, they would catch up soon. He would need to think of something fast. Throwing away the last vestige of mercy for the moment, Ash knew he had to permanently disable their transports.

"Pikachu Shockwave to fry the roads." Pikachu nodded and concentrated its attack, its materialized multiple bolts of lighting from the sky and strike the ground, causing the bikers to lose control of their balance and skid across the road with bruises and blood. The subsequent air strikes of lightning directly hit some bikers, causing serious burnt damage and even electrocutions. The pursuit ended when the leader of the biker gang fell off from the bike after its wheel hit a stray rock shard from the shockwave impact that threw him off balance, leading the rest of the bikers to rally behind their injured and humiliated leader.

"Boss!" With the bikers preoccupied and tending to their leader, Ash was near certain that they were no longer tailing him. He turned to a nearby camping site and stopped right near a bush, completely hiding the vehicle behind the shrubbery and flora. He took a moment to calm his beating heart, that was intense as hell. The pursuit maybe short lived but man was it heart palpitating! Pikachu patted his trainer's hand for a job's well done, not only he managed his cool and composure, but he showed the biker gang a thing or two! In fact, the electric type was near certain that Ash would have pulled the trigger too if the situations call for it, not exactly a praise worthy achievement... but it shows his commitment and growth!

"You okay Pikachu? You think we lost them?" The electric mouse strained its eyes and focused its hearing, so far it didn't hear any sound of motors engines or the smell of diesel. As far as it knows, they are in the clear.

"Pika pika." Ash's lips curled upwards and called Makuhita out, allowing the headband wearing pokemon to stretch its legs. The path they are standing on is a dirt road, leading to somewhere perhaps. With daylight dwindling and their provisions empty, finding a suitable camping spot becomes a priority. And thus, the trio followed the beaten path with Ash pulling the bike along. It wasn't long before they came across a clearing with an old and worn out gas station coming into view. The overhead bypass next to the gas station seemed to cut the route off, indicating that the highway redirected traffic to the main road and leaving the gas station inaccessible for travelers. The only way to get down here was a shoddy looking staircase covered in moss.

"Look a gas station." Abandoned or not, it looked like the perfect place to camp for night. The sky above getting dark, with the lightning branching across the skies. The past few days shown no signs of the heavens opening, it seems that streak ends to day. On closer inspection, the gas station looked relatively well kept despite being abandoned. No sign of break ins and the glass doors looked pristine and clear. Treading lightly, the trio passed by the overgrown grass to enter the store. He pulled out his gun and firmly hold it in his hands, clenching it tightly on it grips with the muzzle aiming upwards for safety sake. The two pokemon scouted ahead after a series of hand signs from Ash, a procedure they were intimately familiar with after during this numerous times.

"Pika!" The clear confirmation from his starter made him lower his guard, he pulled the safety and walked around the store. There was no shortage of snacks, beef jerky and bottled water here. The obscured location of the gas station seemed to protect it from raiders and looters. His lips curled upwards at the sight of his childhood sweets and snacks, how he have missed them.

"Hey plenty of free snacks too." Makuhita sat on the counter table with Pikachu next to him, they unwrapped a candy bar and began to munch on the chocolate. The crunchy sound of the waffles and the aromatic chocolate taste instantly lit up their taste buds and spirits. Ash chuckled at the sight of the two pokemon eagerly eating the candies, a little rest and indulgence won't hurt. The sound of squeaking soon brought tension to the room, Ash instantly cocked his gun and headed towards the storage room with the door slightly ajar. He narrowed his eyes at the faint flicker of shadow on the ground and kicked the door wide opened, slamming the metal door against the wall. His muzzle and sights was then set on a moving figure, its erratic movement and retreating nature prevented Ash from shooting immediately.

"Wait please don't shoot!" The frantic tone from the older man before him indicated it wasn't an infected, nor a bandit perhaps. Still, Ash didn't let down his guard as Pikachu and Makuhita stood next to him, each barring their sparks and fists that glowed in their respective powers. Ash eyed the further, short brown hair, purple shirt with long khaki pants. The man didn't looked ready for the apocalypse yet he sought refuge and shelter here.

"Who are you?" The man in question blinked, finding it mildly amusing that a young teenager who was half of his age can be so intimidating and terrifying. He slowly dropped his hands down and stood still, any sudden movements maybe interpreted a hostility.

"My name is Bill." The Pallet Town native slowly nodded, was he suppose to react appropriately as if he knew what that name meant?

"Bill?" The deadpanned delivery from the young man earned a sigh, Bill isn't exactly the most exciting name in the world.

"Pokemon Bill, the one who invented the Pokemon Storage System? That's me." Instantly, Ash lowered his gun. He analyzed the facial features of the man before his eyes grew wider at that very moment. Although memory is foggy, he keenly recognized the disheveled hair and purple t-shirt Bill always wear during interviews. The Bill's Storage System is a universal module system used by everyone. From business, education or personal use, the tools and convenience it provides to people were invaluable. Which begs the question, why is the founder of such revolutionary invention doing here in an abandoned gas station out of nowhere?

"What!? How- Why are you here then?! Shouldn't someone as important as you be some where more safe?" Bill sighed and leaned against the table behind him filled with an old monitor and worn out keyboard. The equipment dates to the early 2000s, where mouse had ball bearing underneath and floppy disks were still used. Good times.

"That was suppose to happen until my escorts got attacked by the wild pokemon and well, my guards didn't make it. I barely escaped here, have to run away on foot from those biker gang too." Wild pokemon attacking military convoys? That was a scary thought. Up until now, every military and police force Ash encountered were effective in dealing with the infected human and pokemon. To hear them faltering and failing was honestly shocking, what kind of wild infected pokemon did they come across? A rampaging Rhydon? A Machamp that went berserk? All of these are already terrifying to fight against in a fair battle ground setting, so imagine if you were swarmed by a dozen of Machamps eager to split and tear you apart.

"What happened?" Bill bit his tongue lightly, it was best not to revisit those memories. One moment he was in a secured armor vehicle, the next thing he heard was gunfire and hordes of infected pokemon wreaking havoc. Vehicles were flipped and escort pokemon were deployed to burn everything they see. It was a surreal and intense experience.

"Initially I was supposed to be escorted by chopper but unfavourable weather rolled in. Now I'm stuck here and I'm certain my final moments was to die in a crappy roadside gas station filled with nothing but junk food. But enough about me, where are you headed friend?" The young man noted the strain in his voice, if Bill do not wish to disclose what happened that fine to him. Ash holstered his gun back to a pouch and leaned against the metal shelves and racks with his arms crossed. It's been a while since he had a civil conversation with another human. The pokemon are great company and all! But a discussion between humans always hit different.

"Pallet Town, my name is Ash Ketchum." Bill snapped his fingers at the very mention of the name, he heard of the young man before!

"Ash Ketchum? Oh I heard about you, Old Oak mentioned you before to me, spoke very highly of you too." Professor Oak? He has not heard anything from him or Pallet Town since the outbreak, their fate was uncertain but Ash was convinced that he and his family managed to make it out alive.

"Have you heard from them? Is Professor Oak okay?" Alas, Bill shook his head as he nursed a displeased look.

"No, I'm sure you know that overall communication is down. Which is odd as communication and power should be prioritized in an emergency. What the military and strategist are doing is unbeknownst to me, but everything is handled so sloppily. No coordination, no teamwork, everyone seemed to be doing their own thing with no plan in mind. It's concerning to say the least." Ash remained pensive and quiet, as far as he know the military and government had either collapsed or they were secretly waiting the entire thing to blow over. In zombie tropes, they always display the military as incompetent and useless. In reality, a coordinated effort between civil defense and military is more than enough to deal with the horde. Hell, get a few elite pokemon trainers together and get their full slotted team out, that should be enough to wipe out the entire infected population within days. The inventor glanced at the young man and his pokemon, seemingly impressed that a lone child like him managed to make it this far.

"Anyway it won't be long before big brother finds me anyway, they have the ability to track anyone and everyone if they actually give a damn about them. So don't worry about me, I'm very valuable to them. Judging that you're heading towards Vermillion, I assume you are boarding the ferry to Pallet Town?" Ash broke out of his stupor and nodded, heading towards the ferry was all he had going on for the moment.

"I am, but I doubt there is any boats or ferries left." Chance are most of the ferries were capsized or gone from the harbor. In truth, there is another route that connects Vermillion City all the way Viridian. It's a perilous and long path, one which isn't built or made for humans but rather, for pokemon.

"There is another route, but it's more dangerous." Ash forced a wry smile, of course there is another alternative route that is more dangerous than the one is travelling to.

"Let's hear it."

"Near Vermillion City is Digglet Cave, a cavern spanning from the underground of Vermillion all the way to Viridian City. As the name suggest, the cave is home to Digglets and Dugtrios. Make your way down there, and you would eventually find yourself on the outskirts of Viridian Forest and Pewter City. It would be a long journey, but it might be your best shot getting there." Pikachu frowned at the prospects, up until now he has been responsible for Ash's safety. But electric types are next to useless against ground type pokemon. Makuhita can provide protection and value but the Digglets are notoriously swift and slippery, add on the fact you would be fighting them in their home ground and turf, this seems like a death trap waiting to happen.

"That might be my only way to Pallet Town on land." The murmuring from the young man surprised Bill, this boy was convicted in going home. It's good to have goals during these times, keeping yourself occupied takes your mind off the horrors and existential dread.

"You're determined huh, judging by your age and pokemon, you're attending Saffron Academy?"

"I was." The painful emphasis was filled with bitterness and disdain, the fond memory of his high school years would now be replace with surviving a zombie apocalypse where everyone around him is dead or infected. How he wished he can turn back time and cherish the moments he has with his friends. The awkward silence that set in momentarily earned sympathetic looks from Bill, he walked forward and place a firm hand on Ash's shoulders.

"Sorry, I know it's a lot to take in. But you managed to handle yourself this far, I'm sure you would be alright. Since you have your pokemon and everything, the only thing you lack is a pokedex to become a true trainer." Ash smiled at Bill's attempt to cheer him up, it's great to see genuine people in these trying times. But yes, his pokemon journey. Instead of embarking epic adventures and catching new pokemon to see the world, Ash instead is surviving day to day and catching new pokemon to bolster his chances and survival. Honestly, not too different from one another now that he thinks about it.

"Hah, I don't think I'm getting that anytime soon, only trainers who graduated from the academy can get their license and pokedex." Bill narrowed his eyes at Ash's chuckles, it seems that his invention that was meant to help everyone regardless of social class, background and birth of origin has been corporatized in the name of making money, gatekept by education policies meant to reek in student tuition fees and capitalize the dreams of children. He knew it was foolish to sell the invention and idea to Silph Co in his youth, optimistically naive that he can make the world a better place. The inventor sighed inwardly, if he can't change the world, he change what he can.

"Give me your phone Ash." The young man was mildly surprised by how serious Bill was, but he obliged his request nevertheless. His phone for all intents and purposes is broken from within, the semiconductors and nanochips were internally fried by the EMP attack that wiped out all devices. Bill meticulously took the phone in his hands, relatively new and modern, this would be a very quick fix. His eyes glowed blue for the moment, engulfing the portable device in a bright neon blue glow with digital cyber codes flowing in. The sight caused audible gasp from everyone else as they marveled at the transformation process occurring before their very eyes. The once standard looking smartphone soon morphed to an all too familiar device that was sleek and compact.

"Here." Ash wordlessly stared at his pokedex of a phone, the digital screen were fully online with the basic function of a phone seemingly combined with the function of a pokedex. His name and credential were all listed down, his entire life's worth information and experience, seemingly tabulated into mere data and statistics.

"What?" Bill let out a hearty laugh at Ash's flabbergasted nature and slapped his shoulders.

"Don't tell anyone. Your phone now act as a Pokedex, DexNav, Xtransceiver and other useful tool device that they decide to sell as separate devices because of corporate greed. It should be immune to radioactive and electromagnetic waves too, if we ever get another attack that is." The dry delivery meant Bill had done this numerous times, I mean it has to be? What the trio witness was nothing short of magic and sorcery!

"Thank you Bill, wow. This- this is incredible! But how?" Bill merely winked at Ash's question.

"Told you I'm valuable, so don't worry about me. But even with all of these fancy upgrades, it does nothing if you don't have access to the database, AKA the internet. But pre-recorded data such a Pokedex entries and world maps should function normally, it just won't be updated to the latest version." The man was definitely hiding something super important, which explains the military escorts. To change his phone to a completely new device, it's almost like Bill was a pokemon or something!

"Thank you so much Bill! This- this would help me a lot to get back home." The young inventor smiled, how nice to have a home to get back to. He dearly missed his beloved wife, how he would do anything just to be by her side again. The brilliant inventor lips curled upwards, he would see her again, he was sure of it.

"Mhmm, since you have a Pikachu with you, there's no need to worry about power. You're in good hands. Anyway, daylight is running short, you should rest up here and camp." The young man cocked his head aside, the way Bill phrase it seems like he is not staying here for the night. Being caught out in an open field while sleeping is almost a death sentence, it's highly risky as the infected seemed to be more active in night. Ash would have called it zombie trope logic but realistically it made sense too, heat during daytime slows down the body as the body is actively regulating the temperature. The infected were simply saving or storing their energy by lying still in the morning, and actively prowl on the night.

"W-Wait what about you? You're not staying?" The enigmatic inventor shook his head, intuition told him that they were already here waiting for him. No need to drag an innocent child into this.

"I would love to Ash but I would like get some fresh air, I've been stuck here for the entire day. Good luck Ash! I'm sure we will see each other again." Ash barely have a say in the matter as Bill walked out of the front door of the station, he lowered his raised palm and sighed at the weird man's behavior. Someone as important or as confidence as him should be able to handle himself, if not the technocrat would have died anticlimactically with a lone Rattata hiding the tall grass from ambush. Definitely won't happen right?

The inventor hummed a chirpy theme as he exited the gas station, he stood before a running stream and admired the reflection of the night sky that shimmered on the waters. He glanced upwards and smiled at the starry night, beautiful isn't it? The whistling of the wind and the cool air of the night was relieving to his skin, finally fresh air and quiet.

"Subject insight, currently alone in an open field. Subject was previously conversing with a lone survivor. Should we- Yes sir, sending pictures now." A military operative spoke between the trees, clad in midnight tactical gear and heavy firearms, it hoisted its P90 weapon and leaned against the tree. The rest of its team assumed point guard, with snipers agent and shadow operatives preparing their next move. They have been quietly observing the premise for a few hours now, everything from Bill's first entrance in the gas station to Ash stumbling upon abandoned station by accident. Their muzzles and sights were keenly pointed at the young teenager, ready to take him out with any sign of movements. After a brief moment of silence, an intelligence officer spoke up through it's filtered gas masks.

"Ash Ketchum, a student in Saffron Trainer Academy. The kid manage to survive this long, impressive." They rapidly scanned Ash's details on their devices. Everything from his date of birth, hometown, blood type, personality type and potential threat for danger was stated there.

"Do we eliminate him?" The cold and blunt tone from the sniper operative earned a shrug from the rest of the group. They have their orders, if killing a child to ensure their mission is a resounding success, then they would do it regardless of moral penalties or consequences. The chief operative held the ear plug device to his ear, waiting for further commands from the committee.

"Roger that sir, we will leave the survivor. Subject is now out in the open and alone, commencing operation." Shadows moved in the dark immediately, they descended down the cliff and treaded lightly towards the professor. They held their firearms tightly in the grip, approaching the younger man with much caution and courtesy.

"Professor Bill." The inventor merely smiled and turned around, he was expecting them to be the first one to reach out to him. It seems the army beaten to the punch albeit with their agents and soldiers dead. He show little emotion and slide his hands in his pockets, it seems that the situation had gotten more dire.

"Ah about time you all show up, finally true professionals." The head captain ignored the subtle remark and walked forward.

"We need to leave now." The professor sighed and turned to the gas station one last time, so much for the temporary freedom he enjoyed. Still, he has a mission to complete and unresolved issues that need to be solved. One way or another, this damn virus would not be the end of him or Kanto as a whole.

"Of course, let us make haste, I have work to do.
