Luz Noceda's heart was beating like a drum as she drove on the highway trying to process what had just happened. Were they really attacked by zombies? They couldn't. Zombies were just a work of fiction. Then again for years she thought witches and magic were works of fiction and right now she's got an unconscious witch in the back of her car. She took a deep breath as she continued down the road. The front of her car was pretty beat up as a result of smashing through the gate. Her headlights were knocked out forcing her to switch on the brights so she could see where she was going. Luz decided to turn on the radio for an answer. After a quick search she was able to find a news

channel. " If you are just tuning in, we have a special news bulletin. There is an epidemic of mass murder being committed by a virtual army of unidentified assassins. The murders are taking place in villages and cities, in rural homes and suburbs with no apparent pattern nor reason for the slayings. It seems to be a sudden general explosion of

mass homicide. We have some descriptions of the assassins. Eyewitnesses say they are humans with glowing yellow eyes who reek of death. Reaction of law enforcement officials is one of complete bewilderment at this hour. Police and sheriff's deputies and emergency ambulances are literally deluded with calls for help. The scene can be best described as mayhem. The governor has declared a state of emergency and has recommended that all citizens bunker down in their homes or in any shelter until noted

otherwise. We shall remain on the air to provide any further updates." Luz turned off the radio."Okay it's a goddamn zombie outbreak. Well if movies taught me anything avoid towns and try to find somewhere to lay low till it blows over hopefully." Luz was so focused on the radio she did not see a fuel tanker losing control on the other side of the highway. The tanker driver unbeknownst to her had been bitten in the neck. He was desperately fleeing a truckstop overrun by the dead. Holding his neck trying to stop the bleeding but to no avail. He succumbed to his injury and died causing the tanker to crash into an overpass knocking it down. Luz swerved to avoid hitting the rubble causing the car to crash in a ditch alongside the road. Luz was quick to come to her senses. Seeing that her car was done for she quickly got her and Amity out. Taking a look

around to see if any of the undead were close by, Luz saw a horde approaching. "Oh crap.' She muttered as she picked up Amity and made her way to the overpass hoping to climb over the rubble. It was no use as the rubble was too steep to overcome. Luz realizing this moved Amity to the edge of the rubble as she holding her tire iron made ready to swing and hack at the approaching horde. However it seemed that fate was on her side as the tanker's fuel ignited sending a huge ball of flame into the air sending the horde into retreat. Whether it was the intensity of the heat or the brightness of the flame Luz did not care. All that mattered was it bought her time. Taking a second look

she found a gap in the rubble allowing her and Amity to pass. "Okay we need to find somewhere to hold out.' Luz said to herself as she looked around and saw in the distance a farmhouse. "Okay Amity we are almost safe." Luz said as she carried her on her back. After 5 minutes of walking they reached the farmhouse. It was two stories and was painted white. Upon entering the farmhouse Luz was quick to place Amity on a couch. She then took a towel from the adjacent kitchen and used it to clean Amity's forehead.

Shen then went to lock the front door and began searching the House for a proper first aid kit. She had little luck On the main floor and it seemed the basement was barred from the other side so she decided to look upstairs when to her horror she found the remains of what had to be the home's owner. It appeared to be an older gentleman in his 70s. There were handgun bullet casings around. Realizing there might be a firearm Luz made the decision to turn the corpse over and sure enough in the man's right hand was a M1911 and on his waist was the gun holster with 2 extra magazines. Taking the weapons and ammo she continued the search until finding a first aid kit in the bathroom. Taking the kit downstairs she quickly applied antibiotics to Amity's head gash then used bandages to cover the wound. Once Amity's condition was stable Luz took

a deep breath and looked at the handgun. She released the magazine to find it had 5 rounds. "Okay 5 plus the 2 full mags gives us 19, excluding any box of bullets that may be upstairs." Luz said as she sat down next to Amity."Just need to hold out till morning or help arrives." Luz said as she suddenly heard a car pull up. Luz went to take a peek out the window and saw a black man hop out of his car holding a crowbar. The man was battered and exhausted, blood was splattered all over his white button up shirt. Several of the dead began to approach him from several sides. He made short work of them with his crowbar. However the sound of the car engine had attracted a larger

group of them. Seeing he had no chance of surviving outside Luz was quick to run to the door swinging it open and she shouted "Inside now." Seeing the door open the man ran in and Luz slammed it shut locking the doors. The man took a second to catch his breath. "Thank you." the man said. "No problem." Luz replied. "Do you live here? Do you know if there's a phone I can use to see if my family is safe?" The man asked. "No, I don't know I found this place running from them as well." Luz said. "Oh well I guess it's best we introduce ourselves. I Am Duane Jones." The man said. "I am Luz Noceda and the unconscious girl on the bed is my girlfriend Amity Blight. Don't worry she wasn't bitten, she just hit her head. " Luz said as Duane was looking over at Amity. "Well nice to meet you Luz. I wish it could not be in such dire circumstances." Duane said. "I see

you haven't boarded the windows." Duane said as Luz looked at him puzzled. "Should I have, they don't seem too strong." Luz said. " One or two may not be strong but in numbers they can be overwhelming." Duane said as he went to pull a cigarette out of his pocket. "You don't mind?" Duane said as he pulled out his lighter. "It's not my house so go ahead." Luz said realizing he needed it to calm down as Duane lit took a puff and put the cigarette in an ashtray he found. "I was at a diner. Late day in the office so I stopped for dinner before I headed home. In the middle of my meal when i see the patrons have all gathered at the windows to watch two homeless guys fight it out. I didn't

bother till one bit the other and next thing I know those things have overrun the whole diner. I barely make it to my car when i see them smashing the glass panels to force their way out." Duane said as he took another drag on his cigarette. "It's that bad out there?" Luz said, taking everything in. " More than you know. So how did you end up here?" Duane asked, putting out his cigarette and Luz explained the cemetery ,the fallen overpass and the fire fending them off. "Good to know now, let's not waste any time.

That horde of them that were following me will be here soon. And with that the two searched the house finding a toolkit in a closet with a hammer and nails as well as a meat mallet. The next step they tore up whatever wooden furniture that would work to barricade the windows. Thankfully the house had some scrap wood lying about and after 20 mins the 2 of them had boarded everything up. " Now that we're done here I'm taking Amity upstairs." Luz said as Duane was working on getting the tv on. Duane nods and Luz carries a still out cold Amity to an upstairs bedroom.
