Tried Our Best

Chapter 24

I can't help but wonder. If we're just two people who don't work as a couple.

Authors note : We are starting to see that Brooke and Lucas's marriage wasn't what we thought. Was there love there.? Yes but there was alot more going on with them as seperate people. The emotional disconnect. The fact that there were months and years where they slept in seperate rooms. It's all tied together. They didn't expose their kids to the negative parts of their marriage.

"You are going to regret this. You realize that right.?"

"You can't marry him. This isn't love. It's obligation." Victoria Davis proclaimed.

Brooke glared at her mother. "We're in love. We have a son together."

"We're a family. What do you know about me or Lucas to say this shouldn't happen?" Brooke asked.

Victoria laughed and looked back at her daughter.

"Marriage isn't about happiness or family pictures. There are expectations. Rules. You are tying yourself to him when neither of you know who you are."

"I was in love with a boy once. But then reality hit and i realized life doesn't give a damn about surface level emotion." Victoria explained.

Did Brooke want to get married. No. But she refused to repeat her parents mistakes and have a life without real love.

Brooke felt her heart sink with Lucas's admission.

"Sadie almost drowned. All these years ago and i'm only finding out about it because of you're guilt."

"Why you pushed me away and made me feel like i was a laying next to a stranger is because of this." Brooke suddenly realized.

"Why didn't you tell me this before? We could of worked through that." Brooke added in.

"The guilt. The shame. Everything. I let you down. I almost took her away from us. I hated myself for not being more careful."

"So you kept you're distance and never really allowed yourself to bond with her. Which is punishing both of you. But especially her." Brooke replied.

"Why did you marry me when you didn't want too?" Lucas asked.

"Because i was so in love with you. But really i didn't want my parents to be right." Brooke admitted.
