"How do you even not realise that there's no one in a hospital?" Emily teased Morgan and Reid, trying to break the tension.
The looks she got from everyone very much said that it was not working. But still, she had a valid point. How did you just walk into a hospital and think, "oh, I haven't walked into anyone yet, yeah, that's normal".
"We were talking to each other," Morgan said defensively while Reid nodded vigorously.
"Staring so much into each other's eyes that you don't notice anything about your surroundings?"
There was only so much mocking that the two men could take and Emily had quickly reached their limit. Both of them lobbed scrunched up pieces of papers at her, which did no damage whatsoever as they bounced harmlessly away. But it was the only acceptable way of dealing with their frustrations at the moment, especially under Hotch's watchful eye.
"Enough," Hotch said sharply making all three of them settle immediately.
Things were already not going very well, there was no need for them to make it worse.
"Let's bring our focus back to the case" Morgan said in an attempt to get them all back on track. "What's our next move?"
"I think we should be asking how he managed to empty a hospital," Reid suggested, frowning in thought as he tried to come up with an explanation himself.
"I still think that hospital's a bit of a stretch for that place," Rossi said. "It's basically a small clinic that has illusions of grandeur."
Which was true, kt really was just a clinic with the word 'Hospital' in its name. But that was hardly important right now. What was important was the fact that a whole building of people had basically gone missing and now they had to figure out what to do next. Today was definitely not a lucky day for them.
"Illusions of grandeur?" Morgan snorted. "Where do you come up with stuff like this?"
"I am a writer."
"Either way it is more than slightly concerning that the place is empty," JJ pointed out. "Does this mean that all the doctors and patients-"
"That come to a grand total of twelve," Rossi interrupted only to shrink back at the glare she shot him - it was her mom glare which everyone on the tram agreed was terrifying.
"Does that mean that all of the doctors and patients," JJ repeated slowly and no one dared to interrupt her this time. "Does this mean that they are now victims?"
Silence fell as they all considered that, not liking that at all. They definitely did not need twelve more victims. And if he escalated that quickly, what was going to be his next move? The profile didn't consider this much of an escalation, it would be harder to predict what he was going to do next.
"We're screwed," Emily said, voicing everyone's thoughts.
The doctor blinked owlishly at all of the extremely tense federal agents who were currently standing in front of him and two other members of staff. He looked thoroughly confused. Hopefully it was because the current circumstances happened so fast and not because of something the unsub did. Because of current events, none of the team wanted to enter a hospital right now unless absolutely everything.
"Oh, no, nothing happened to any of us," the doctor was now telling them. "Well, except-"
"Except what?" Morgan couldn't help but interrupt, leaning forwards slightly.
"Well, except for the fact that we had to leave. Disrupted our whole day."
Rossi snorted at that and muttered something about most of their day being mostly empty but thankfully the doctor didn't hear because JJ talked over him.
"I mean," he continued. "The man from the city, he was very polite and apologetic, told us that there was a gas leak. So, we evacuated all of our patients and personnel-"
"I'm sure that didn't take too long," Rossi muttered.
The man gave him a reproachful look as he continued. "We all got out and brought our patients to a church hall until the place was clear again. We had no idea that he wasn't a man from the city."
"You wouldn't," JJ said sympathetically, making the man feel a bit better.
"Anything notable about him?" Morgan pressed.
"The man from the city? Or not, I suppose," the doctor said vaguely. "Well, no. Nothing about him really stood out and his cap was pulled over his face."
"He had a scar on his cheek," one of the clinic personnel said helpfully. "And he had a blue sweater underneath his hi-vis vest.
"His hands were really sorry too," the other woman added. "I remember that being kind of gross."
"Anything else?"
All three shook their heads and they were soon ushered out and being told to not go too far in case they were needed again.
"Well, that was something," Emily said after the man left. "Who brings patients to a church hall instead of a hospital when you can't stay in your clinic?"
"Patients who aren't that sick?" JJ suggested.
"At least we don't have to deal with a sudden increase in victims," Reid pointed out.
They all stopped and then slowly agreed. He had a point.
"This is the most frustrating case ever," Morgan grumbled, throwing himself into her chair.
"The case itself isn't that complicated," Reid felt like he had to point out. "It's just the unsub."
"Last time unchecked, the unsub and the case were basically one and the same."
"Technically-"
"Tell me you aren't annoyed," Morgan interrupted, not exactly wanting to get into semantics.
"I am," Reid said in an offended tone.
Everyone was annoyed. Apparently, their unsub emptied the clinic because he wanted to confuse them. No other reason than that. Apparently, he liked causing chaos.
"Can we get him put down for more time for annoying us?" Morgan asked, glaring through the two-way glass at their oblivious unsub.
Hotch pinched the bridge of his nose and breathed deeply.
"That's not exactly a crime," Reid said helpfully.
"Or else yours and Morgan's prank wars would have got you locked up a long time ago," Emily quipped.
