Olly was losing.
Badly.
He regretted his choice of words at this moment, but it was already far too late to take them back now. He had to now resort to using the Vellumentals the normal way. The way he was told they were to be used. He failed, and he could never fold his father back.
He had already tried before the battle begun, but he just turned out to be a sheet of green origami paper. Olly pretended it was fine and shrugged it off.
But it wasn't fine.
He wasn't fine.
He shakily stood, Ochaco, Olivia, and Izuku telling him to stop. He looked up at Todoroki, who nodded. He clearly knew that Olly could do it, but Olly didn't think he could.
"Why? Why did I think this was a good idea?" His Magic Circle materialized beneath his feet. "Why was I so stupid? I should have known you would beat me! However...I still won't lose!"
Izuku saw his eye glow for a split second before he was engulfed in flames. "Oh my gosh, he just died!"
There was a loud, ground shaking, screech that came from the inferno.
"Not dead," Olivia said, cowering behind Izuku, "but just snapped as the Fire Vellumental!"
"Wait, what?!"
Olly swiped the fire away with his wing and took flight. His purple feathers shone with brilliance in the afternoon sun. His eyes were glowing a pure white against the blue of his wings and head crest.
"Woah! Blue fire!" Ochaco pointed out.
"That's not right," Olivia said. "Do you think it's because he's upset? Or was it that pepper Kirishima fed him?"
Izuku shrugged. "Maybe both?"
"Let's see you parry this, you casual!" Olly swiped his wings at Todoroki, the feathers flying off like burning missiles.
Todoroki expertly dodged them and directed fire at his face. Olly screeched again, the fire growing larger and a deeper blue.
"Idiot! Your fire only makes this inferno brighter!" He shot a trail of fire at him.
Todoroki used ice to burn it out, losing his ice shield in the process. "Come on, Shokunin. I know you can figure it out. Think about Giga Olly for a minute."
"Don't you dare bring him into this!" His feathers re-attached to the skeleton of his wings. "He's nothing to me!"
"Wait for just a second!"
"No, you wait and listen! He's literally nothing! Just because I turn giant doesn't mean I get any stronger! Giantification means nothing if you're weak like me! It's just a..." His fires died down and Olly folded back into himself. "It's just a bluff. Oh Bibliofolds...I was so blind. I can't believe it. You really did know how to help me."
"What did I say? I wouldn't have offered unless I knew."
Olly laughed and slapped his palm onto his forehead. "Hah...I didn't think I could, so I never tried. So that's how I control Giga Olly." He fixed his hair. "And neither did the Vellumentals, apparently." He held out his hand.
Izuku saw his eye glow again as a purple fire appeared in his open palm. Instead of vanishing, the glow remained as he gently tossed the fire upwards twice.
"Heh." He waved his arm around, the fire remaining. "Um...How do I put this out?"
"I got it!" Olivia said. She went to Olly's Magic Circle that was still sitting on the ground and used the Water Vellumental.
Lemon wasn't as...majestic as Izuku pictured. The blue scales reflected the sun like ripples on water, the light blue mimicking the sky.
"Why's it so fat?" Bakugou asked.
Oh yeah, there was that 's what made it not as beautiful as izuku thought it'd be.
"Hey! Let me do this one thing without being rude, Bakugou!"
Olly held out his arm. "Just put it out!"
"Okay, just don't move."
Everybody backed away from them. Olivia spat the water on Olly, transforming back into herself when she finished.
"So exhausting...but so fun..."
"You should be more careful with that!" Olly screamed, covered in water, eye twitching. "You're going to get me soggy!"
"I'm sorry! I don't have control over them like you do! Plus, if you were so worried about getting soggy, why'd you do it anyways?!"
"Um, what's going on?" Izuku asked. "Is this what it's like to have siblings?"
Todoroki nodded. "Pretty much."
"You idiot!" Olly pointed at her.
"Hey! That's really mean!"
"Well get used to it!"
"Okay, that's enough you two," Ochaco intruded, stepping between them two. "Now I think it'll be best if you both apologize."
"But why me?" Olly complained. "I didn't get her soggy! I'm going to fall apart because of her!"
Izuku gave him a dirty look.
"Yeah...You're right..I'm sorry, Livi."
"Me too...I should have been more careful."
Olly pat her on the head.
"See? Isn't that better?"
"Shut it, Uraraka. We would have made up eventually."
"So um..." Izuku started. "How are supposed to get back home?"
"Easy," Olly said, floating past Izuku. "We leave through the same Magic Circle we entered through! It'll go away after this time though, so we'll need to go quickly. Livi, you can go first again"
"Alright, Izuku and Ochaco! Let's go!"
Izuku jumped onto the chance to hold Ochaco's hand.
"Um, you both need to be touching Livi. Sorry, Izuku."
Izuku sadly grabbed Olivia's hand instead.
"Maybe another day," she told him quietly. "I mean, Bobby doesn't even have hands, so you're lucky!"
Izuku gave her a perplexed stare.
"Anyways, byee!"
Izuku expected the jump this time, and fell back into the field they were in when they left. He landed on his feet, but Olivia had fallen over. Olly floated down in front of him and Bakugou landed ungracefully on his face. Todoroki also landed on his feet.
"So...Now that that's done..." Olly brought out the Origami Craftsman. "Oh...I hope this works."
Izuku saw his eyes glow again as the Origami Craftsman floated from his hands. Olly's hands began glowing as well.
"Come on, I unfolded Origami Castle while on my deathbed...I can do this too."
"Don't hurt yourself," Izuku warned.
Olly glared at him, clearly wanting Izuku to shut his mouth so he could focus. Izuku stepped away from him and Olly looked back to the Origami Craftsman.
"Come on, I can't afford to fail now!"
Nothing happened; he was still origami.
Izuku saw Olly's eyes tear up, and he came over to comfort him.
"Wh-why didn't it work? Why couldn't I do it? I did it to him before, and you...Why do I have to fail like this?"
"Hey, it's okay. We all fail. Today's just not your day. We can try again soon, but I think you shouldn't worry about it right now."
"And why do you think that's going to help? It's not like you'd care or know if your father is dead. After all, he's nowhere to be found. But the Origami Craftsman made me. If I lose him, I lose myself too. I'm part of him. He told me himself that I reminded him of himself when he was younger."
Izuku felt himself growing upset. "Why are you bringing my dad into this? And you can't say that, because I don't see your mom anywhere either! Plus, it's like me with my mom. I would be destroyed if she died, but there's just nothing you can do about it right now!"
"Yes, there is! I did this to him, and I can undo it! You just have to let me try again!"
"Olly, you need a break! You work yourself too hard! I mean, what'll happen if you use Fold of Life too much, huh? Do you even know? You might kill him if you keep trying like this!"
"I killed my mother, okay?!" Olly's face gentled as tears rolled down his face. "I killed her. I didn't mean to, but I did."
Izuku stayed silent for a moment, unsure how to respond. "You did? How? If...you don't mind me asking."
Olly looked at the ground, shifting the dirt with his foot. "She went on a boat tour on the Princess Peach. It was mostly Bob-oms on that ship. Bobby was one of them. I didn't know who she was at the time."
"Okay...Keep going."
"I sent the Paper Macho Gooper Blooper to destroy the ship because there were Toads on it as well. Most of them survived but...Tonya, my mother, did not. She was thrown into the water and nobody found her except for the Gooper Blooper; and I found her..." He wiped the tears from his face. "She was dead. She broke her spine on a rock on the seafloor when she was slammed in."
"Oh..."
"And since I found out that was her...I put it as my duty to make sure Owen never dies. But now...I broke another promise."
Izuku was smacked in the face with realization. "That's why you said you don't like promises."
Olly nodded and fell to his knees. "I have no idea what I'm going to do now...Maybe I should just give up. After all, everything I've done amounted up to nothing in the end. So what if I get my kingdom? I can't live in it without Owen."
"H-hey! Don't get depressed on me!" He titled Olly's head to face him. "Now that I understand why you were so determined to do this, I can help you. Don't worry, we'll find a way to fix him." He held out his pinky. "Scout's honor."
Olly looked at his hand.
"You just take it with your own and shake my hand like a handshake."
Olly examined his own hand for a moment, then mimicked Izuku's hand position.
"There you go." He scooped Olly's pinky into his and shook it. "See? It's like that."
"Oh...That's so weird!" He chucked, his bangs wiggling with the movements. "Humans have weird things, huh? Weird uh...what would you call that?"
"An oath."
"Yeah. Humans have weird oaths."
"Ready to head home and have dinner?" Izuku asked, holding out his hand.
Olly nodded and accepted his open hand. Izuku helped him stand and ruffled his hair.
"Hey, only Livi can do that!"
"Sorry!"
Olly fixed his hair and crown. "Do you really think you can help me fix the Origami Craftsman?"
"I'm not sure," Izuku admitted. "But it'll be worth to try so I can see you smile again. I don't like me friends being upset, and you should know that!"
"Heh...Just like Livi."
