Day Five

Debris | Pinned Down | "It's broken."

Sam and Bucky could only watch as Dr Nagar's lifeless body slumped to the floor. Zemo had shot him directly in the head from the back of the room. Witnessing what had happened just as she entered, Sharon reacted instantly and pinned Zemo's arm against the wall. She quickly tore the weapon from his hand. Bucky stood over the dead scientist and Sam cautiously stepped up behind him.

Bucky heard it before the others. A faint whistling getting louder and louder. His eyes widened as he realised what was about to happen.

"Sam, get down!" He turned and pushed Sam to the floor and away from the wall. By that point, all Bucky could do was brace for impact, pulling his left arm up to shield his face as much as possible.

The explosion was deafening. Some kind of rocket had been shot into the shipping container. There was debris everywhere. Jagged metal stuck out all over the room.

Sam had all the wind knocked out of him, causing him to groan. Slowly, he rolled from his back to his stomach and managed to push himself to his feet. He was wobbly but standing. He looked to the corner of the room. Sharon and Zemo were both conscious and seemed mostly unhurt. They were furthest from the blast.

"Sharon, you good?" He managed to ask with gritted teeth. The ringing in his head was so loud.

"Yeah." She breathed. "Good." It was sarcastic, but Sam just took that as proof that she was okay. He looked to where Bucky had been standing. There was a gaping hole in both the floor and wall where the explosion had been.

"Bucky!" Sam called out, holding a hand on his head. "Bucky!" Desperation leaked into his voice.

There was a small crumble of some debris from the more destroyed corner of the room; the opposite corner to where Zemo and Sharon were collecting themselves.

"Bucky!" Sam shouted as he ran, well more like stumbled toward the sound. "Buck?" he mumbled as got closer.

It took a couple of seconds, but he finally got a response.

A weak "Sam?" came from underneath the mess.

"I'm gonna get you out of there, Buck." Sam sounded confident, but he wasn't really sure how. He glanced back to Sharon and Ze- Zemo was gone. He locked eyes with the ex-Shield agent. "Get him."

She looked to where she could only assume Bucky was and then back to Sam before giving a small nod. She turned and ran out of Sam's sight.

He turned his attention back to his friend. His eyes scanned the rubble until he finally saw a glint of metal – vibranium. Dropping to his knees, Sam started to tear away at the pieces on Bucky's left side. The vibranium hand shifted slightly as the weight was removed.

Now that he had a reference point, Sam began pulling the debris off from Bucky's upper body. It took a lot of effort, but he managed to shift a large chunk of concrete to reveal Bucky's face.

"Bucky!" Sam yelled, relieved that he could finally see him properly. The feeling was short-lived when he saw the state he was in. "Oh shit." He mumbled. Bucky's eyes were closed, and he had blood coating one side of his face. A lot of blood.

"Hey, Buck." Sam knelt beside him, tapping his cheek gently to try and stir him awake. "You with me?" Sam watched as Bucky gave a small frown. "Bucky, open your eyes." He seemed to be waking up and trying to listen. Eventually, his eyes slowly fluttered half-open. "There you go."

"Sam?" his voice was so weak. He let out a pained groan as he tried to shift beneath the rubble. Sam could see Bucky's concern when he couldn't move. "What's happening?"

Sam didn't really know what to say, but he knew he had to say something.

"I've just gotta get this stuff off of you and then you and I can walk out of here." That's it. That's all he had to do.

"Yeah," Bucky answered quietly. "Okay."

The slab of concrete looking material that covered Bucky's lower half looked extra heavy. Sam squatted and put his hands underneath one side of it. He used all his strength to try and pull it up, grunting as he exerted his energy, but it wouldn't budge.

"Sam," Bucky called out to him. "Use that." He pointed with his eyes to a metal pole a few feet away. Sam nodded and ran to grab it, returning a couple seconds later.

"Alright, I'm gonna lift this and you've gotta move out the way." Bucky looked up at him, his eyes opening fully. "You ready?" He gave a small nod to confirm.

Sam shoved the pole underneath the slab and pushed his side down as hard as he could. The slab slowly began to lift upwards.

"Go, go, go." Sam rushed out as he used all his weight and strength to keep the pole moving downwards.

As the weight lifted off Bucky, he thought it would feel soothing. Instead, a jarring and sudden pain made him scream out. Despite this, he used his arms to shuffle out from underneath the rubble.

The concrete dropped to the floor with a loud crash. Sam was panting as he moved to look at his friend who had just made a chilling sound.

"Bucky?" Sam looked him over. "You've got to be joking." He thickly swallowed as he looked Bucky over. He was grabbing at his right leg and wincing in pain. Sam could see the bone sticking out through the stupidly tight pants he always wears. The skin around it looked mangled and bloody.

"It's broken." Bucky stated, looking up to Sam.

"No kidding." This could've been harsh, but the way he said it was more in disbelief and concern than anything else. How had he even been able to move with his leg looking like that?

"Are you boys ready to go cause I can't hold them back much longer."

Sharon. Sam had forgotten he even had the earpiece in.

"We'll be out in a minute." Bucky said with misguided confidence. He tried to push himself up with his arms, grunting through his clenched jaw as he did. Sam put his hands on his shoulders to keep him on the ground.

Sharon responded, "Good. I don't know where Zemo is, but we can worry about that later."

Bucky grunted in frustration and tipped his head backwards. This could not have gone any more wrong.

Sam let go of Bucky's shoulders and raced out of his vision. He came back with a smooth strip of metal about 2 feet long. Bucky watched as Sam started tearing strips off his own shirt.

"What are you doing?" Bucky yelled, angry from finding out about Zemo. "We need to go!"

"I'm making a splint for your leg and I'm sorry." It all came out in a rushed blur. Bucky didn't really understand.

"You're sorry?"

Sam took a beat before explaining, "I need to set your leg… and it's really gonna hurt."

"Oh," was all Bucky could manage for a moment. "I've been through worse."

"I don't know about that." Sam mumbled as he sat his makeshift splint to the side. He placed a hand on either side of the area where the bone was protruding.

Bucky closed his eyes and gritted his teeth, bracing himself for what was about to happen. Sam was probably more panicked than Bucky if he was to be honest.

Holding the leg, he took a few deep breathes before starting to count.

"3. 2-"

The crack was loud. It made Sam want to throw up. The sound Bucky made was far worse. The former Winter Soldier tried to keep it in, but a strangled scream forced its way out of his mouth.

He couldn't even stop himself from letting out pained moans as Sam set up the splint he had prepared. When it was finished being attached to Bucky's, Sam moved to kneel beside his friend's head.

"It's done- I'm done. It's over. You're good, but we've gotta get out of here if we wanna keep it that way."

Bucky looked tired. Bucky was tired. His eyes had returned to their' half-open stage, but he still nodded his understanding. Sam moved to slide his arm underneath Bucky's shoulder, helping him get to his… foot. He tried to take most of Bucky's weight as they climbed out of the building, but every now and then his injured leg would hit the floor and he'd yell out.

"Almost there, almost there." Sam told Bucky as they were reaching the exit, hearing the gunshots getting louder. Sharon was waiting for them.

"Jesus Christ." She stared at the two men in front of her in total shock. She was kind of impressed that they made it out as fast as they did, considering how horrific Bucky's leg looked – not to mention the blood coating the side of his face.

"What's the plan?" Sam asked, well it was more of a tired demand at that point.

Sharon was about to explain that she didn't exactly have one, when Zemo pulled up in a roofless car directly in front of the barricade.

"Did you think I'd leave you to die?" He spoke with a grin covering his face. "Get in."
