17: Little Girl Lost (2)
Himiko shivered as she laid on the table, a bright white light practically blinding her as her body was scanned. "I can't believe that you have a fully functioning hospital under the school." She muttered as Chiyo sat at her monitor, "Is all of this really necessary?"
The elderly Heroine chuckled, "Honestly, I truly hope not." She said as she checked on the girl's vitals. "You see, while Nezu has high hopes for the future of this society, he also believes in being prepared for the absolute worst case scenario: all out war."
Himiko turned her head away from the light, "War?"
"Now, now, try not to move," Chiyo told her as the girl turned her head back around, "And yes, war. It's not something that we have had to worry about in quite a long time," she sighed tiredly, "That's one of the benefits of being a superpowered society: wars aren't fought on battlefields anymore, but in the back alleys and old warehouses where dastardly Villains like to hang around."
The scanner let out a loud sound and powered down. "You can get down, now, Dearie," she smiled as the girl sat up and swung her legs over the side, pulling the hospital gown below her knees, "Now then, you'll be happy to know that, since we've been able to treat you for the side effects of those horrible drugs, you're mental health seems just fine." The girl sighed in relief, "However," she perked up fearfully, "I've noticed something with your blood work." She picked up a clipboard and began reading, "You see dear, while your Quirk requires you to regularly ingest blood, you have a smaller, second stomach that's about the size of a lemon, not very large at all, add to the fact that you were starved for so long, the secondary stomach as shrunken to the size of an egg."
"Then why do I keep craving so much blood?" Himiko asked fearfully, "I...I drink at least four bags of blood a day! If it's that small, then - "
"Calm down, Dear, I was getting to that," the nurse said in a patient tone. "Now, as I was saying, while your Quirk's secondary stomach is getting all the blood it needs, it seems that, since your body has an actual need for blood, you've..." she took a deep breath and let out a sigh, "Himiko, my dear child, you've developed a rare form of porphyria."
Himiko cocked her head, "What's that?"
Chiyo sighed again, "It's an old disease that's normally genetic," she explained, "But since the rise in Quirks, a strain of of the sickness developed in individuals that, like yourself, needed blood for their Quirks to be of use."
Himiko looked at the woman and gave her a small timid smile, "You don't have to beat around the bush, you know," she said as the woman looked at her, "Just...tell me what's gonna happen to me?"
Chiyo smiled at her, "Sometimes I forget just how strong you can be," she said to the girl, "Porphyria is a disease that causes the body to crave blood, my dear," she continued as the girl went pale, "And, given that this is the strain that arose from those with vampiric Quirks, your body now needs blood as more than just a component for your Quirk. You'll need it like you need food and water."
"And it's only going to get worse, isn't it?" Himiko asked with a tremble in her voice, "Lemme guess, I caught this because my parents wouldn't allow me to drink any blood?"
Chiyo shook her head, "That is a large factor, Dear, but not the entire problem," she got up from her chair and walked over to the girl, taking her left wrist in her hand, and turning it over so she could see the scarred flesh there, "This, however, was another part of it." She said, "While I know you were just trying to sate your thirst, most people with vampiric Quirks who drink their own blood will often develop this disease."
"Can it be treated?" Himiko asked, "I mean...if I keep needing more blood..."
Chiyo patted her hand, "There are treatments, Dear, and they can be taken over long periods of time, or we can outright treat you for the disease," she said told the girl, "But this type of porphyria is very stubborn, and may never be fully cured given how long you've probably had it."
Himiko said nothing as she felt her heart sinking into her stomach, already craving another bag of blood after the three she had already had before coming to get checked out. "Is there a chance that I might hurt someone?" She asked, thinking of her new family.
Chiyo frowned and looked back at her charts, "There is...a chance...but that's only if you've gone too long without partaking, or your medication." She said, "And I'll have that ready by the time that - "
The sound of her phone going off distracted her as she dug it out of her coat pocket, "Toshinori Yagi, this had better be important," she sounded cross as she spoke into the phone at the girl's sort-of-stepfather, "or so help me, the next pill I make you swallow will be a suppository!"
Himiko giggled as that mental image entered her head: she could just picture the look on the man's face. "Ask him how the move is going." Himiko put in.
The woman laughed, "Himiko wants to know how the move is...WHAT!?" Chiyo suddenly burst out angrily. "Is she alright? No visible wounds?" She demanded, sounding more like the former Heroine that she was. "Skinny...no bones showing, yet..." she nodded and Himiko could hear Inko's voice speaking on the other end, "Well, she's obviously malnourished, and likely ill with a cold if she's been running around barefoot with nothing but a rag of a dress..." The woman looked increasingly angry, "Alright, bring her straight to me. Don't even stop to call Tsukauchi: come straight here!"
She hung up a moment later, and turned to the young blonde, "Better get dressed, my dear," she said as the girl hopped down from the table and stepped behind the screen, "After you're done, go find Mrs. Bakugo and wait with her. This is turning into a very long day."
Himiko peeked out from behind the screen, "What happened?"
The elderly woman sighed, "A little girl broke into the house while they were loading Mei's things," she said as the girl's eyes widened, "Inko said that the poor little thing was barefooted, skinny and scared out of her mind. She just barely managed to coax her out of her hiding place."
Himiko shook her head, "First Mei's dad is killed, then I find out I'm sick, and now a little runaway?" She sighed, "This family just can't catch a break, can it?"
Chiyo gave the girl a knowing look, "Now, Dear, you might be surprised at what this is doing for your dear mother," she said, knowing that the girl thought of Inko as her real mother now. "This little girl could have easily passed them by, and perhaps frozen to death as cold as it's been, but she chose to hide somewhere she thought she'd be safe, and met Inko." She smiled, "I think that whatever cosmic powers are at work may be trying to set things up for the better." She said, not knowing that her statement caused a certain time traveler that was sipping tea in his pocket dimension to sneeze.

Inko hung up the phone and passed it back to Toshinori, "She says to bring her straight in," she whispered over the sleeping child's head, "We're not even to speak with Tsukauchi before she's checked on her."
Toshinori gave an understanding nod, "I'm not surprised," he muttered as he and Inko slowly made their way to the front door, "She's quite protective when it comes to children, and a little girl like this would most likely send her into a frenzy."
The woman looked down at the little girl in her arms, her tiny hands clutching at her blouse, "I suppose I know how she feels," she sighed, "I suppose its a good thing that the Ashidos weren't able to meet up with us today, isn't it?" Toshinori cocked his head a little, "Well, it wouldn't do for them to see how often something odd comes along for my family, would it?"
The man just chuckled, "Well, I wouldn't call this odd," he said, reaching back to scratch his neck, "By this point, it's rather commonplace."
"Oh, you!"
Meanwhile, the children were keeping a strict vigil outside of the empty home. Kinoko was over by the rebuilt Dodge Challenger, while Hitoshi hovered nearby. Izuku was leaning against the fence surrounding the home while Mei fiddled with her Proto-Tool.
"You know something?" The rosette said as she turned her Proto-Tool into a bow, "We should form a Hero Team."
Izuku sputtered, "A team?" He smiled at her, "Really?"
"Hell yeah!" Mei grinned at him, "I mean think about it!" She said as Hitoshi and Kinoko took notice, "Your Quirk makes you a pretty big heavy hitter, so you'd naturally have a lot of followers just because of that," she said as the boy blushed, "But you've got the smarts for it, too." She pointed out, "I'm pretty smart myself, but you have a real tactician's brain!"
Hitoshi chuckled as he came over, "She's right about that," he said, "I've read some of those notes you take, and damned if I couldn't make use of some of the ways you planned on taking down seasoned Pros."
"And he's nice, shroom" Kinoko put in, "I don't know what else to call it. People just seem drawn to you, shroom."
Izuku grinned at her, "I think you mean charisma," he said, rubbing his neck bashfully, "But I don't think I'm all that great, really. I mean, I think I've been pretty lucky so far with everything that's happened up 'til now."
"Luck?" Hitoshi laughed, "You wanna talk about luck?" He made a gesture to himself and grinned, "How about when you and Mei came to my rescue?" He reminded the verdette, "If it hadn't been for you guys, I'd have taken a pretty bad beating back then, and probably been in rough shape by the time I took the exams." He sighed, hefting his Proto-Tool, "And, after seeing what we were up against, I know I would've failed the practical exam without even scoring a single Combat Point without your Proto-Tool."
Izuku gave him a frown, "Aw, come on, you would've been fine without it."
Hitoshi just rolled his eyes, "Izuku, I don't know if you're blind, or just naive," he chuckled, "I was pretty damned scrawny when we first met."
"He's naive," Mei put in with a small nudge at the boy's side, "But let's not forget that you saved me from a bad situation, too." She said, making the boy look at her, "When we first met, I was nearly crushed under a pile of scrap metal," she smiled at him, "And you became the first friend I'd ever really had that made me want to look away from a workbench."
Hitoshi grinned at her, "You're still a gearhead." He smirked at her to which Mei replied by flipping him the bird, causing the four of them to laugh.
"And then," Kinoko said, making them look at her, "I...I don't really have the same bonds you guys do," said figetted, a small blush coming to her cheeks beneath her bangs. "But...I'm really glad I met you guys..." she cast a small glance at Hitoshi, who grinned at her.
Mei grinned at her, "She's right. I'm glad I met you...all of you..." She looked from the two boys and other girl in their group, "I...I don't think I could get through any of this without you guys." She said, worrying her lip.
Kinoko suddenly grabbed her in a hug. Mei was still for a moment before a devilish look came to her face right before her left hand reached down and grabbed the Mushroom girl's rear. "Eep!"
"Man, Shinso, you're one lucky guy!" Mei grinned as Kinoko jumped away from her while the boy laughed and put his arm around her shoulders.
"And don't you forget it," the Brainwashing teen grinned as Kinoko stammered and blushed like a tomato.
"Oh, I'm sorry for ever being nice to you!" Kinoko shouted at her.
"You love me and you know it!" Mei retorted.
Izuku chuckled, but before he could say anything more, he heard the sound of someone approaching them. He turned slightly and was surprised to see a man stanind very close to them. He was young, dressed simply in a green coat, and blue jeans. His face, however, was covered by a surgical mask, which made it hard to see his features.
That wasn't the strangest thing about him, though.
The moment Izuku laid eyes on him, the boy had to suppress a shiver while his hands grew cold and clammy. This man, whoever he was, was not someone he wanted to face. Even with his most powerful form, he felt that the stranger could kill him easily.
"Excuse me," the stranger asked, his voice slightly high and raspy, "Have either of you seen a little girl running by here?" When he spoke, Izuku felt sickened to his stomach.
Hitoshi recovered first, and replied with a friendly grin, "Man, you kind'a startled us," he said, his grip on Kinoko's shoulders tightening protectively as he paused to think for a moment, "Hm, a little girl...can't say I've seen one around here." He jerked the thumb of his free hand toward Hatsume's house, "See, we've been helping our friend here move."
Mei turned to the man, the crosshairs in her eyes shrinking, "Yeah, we've been pretty busy," she said, leaning heavily into Izuku's side, "Even if she might've passed my, we might not have seen her." The man's eyes narrowed at her, then fell to the Proto-Tool she was carrying, which he took note that all of them carried the same thing save for Kinoko.
Then his eyes rose up and looked directly into Izuku's, "You should tell your friends that it isn't nice to lie," he said, his voice becoming oily slick, "Lying to the wrong person can get you in a lot of trouble, you know?"
Izuku felt his stomach clench, but more than that, he felt anger bubbling up in his chest, "And you should know that we don't normally talk to strangers." Izuku said, hefting his Proto-Tool, his finger loosely on the trigger. "My friend's telling the truth: we didn't see your kid."
"Is that so?" His slid his gaze to the pink-haired girl, "You know...you look familiar..."
Mei frowned at the man, "To my knowledge, we've never met," she said, "And I think I'd like to keep it that way."
The man seemed to smile beneath his mask, "No, you're right, but I remember running into someone that looked like you," he saw Mei tense, her grip tightening on her weapon, "Short pink hair, and eyes like crosshairs." By now, Mei had gone extremely pale and her shoulders were shaking violently, "He tried to keep me from something that I wanted," Izuku coiled his arm around her waist in order to keep her from moving, "It...didn't end well for him." His tone was amused as he began taking his gloves off.
Before Izuku could do anything to stop her, Mei turned in his grip, her Proto-Tool rising up to her shoulder while the stranger seemed to be reaching out...when all of them felt an intense pressure slamming into them with the force of an erupting volcano.
The four teenagers turned around toward the house, and saw Toshinori standing there, looking absolutely furious. Inko was just behind him with the little girl clutched to her chest, looking at the man with shock all over her face as the blond man stared down the stranger. The man's eyes had gone white from the pressure that Toshinori was putting out, and, like the children, seemed unable to move.
"I was willing to let you walk away," Toshinori's voice carried across the yard as if he were standing right next to them, "But the moment you thought that you could threaten these children and get away with it was the last straw." His tone was so calm that he could have been talking about the weather, but Izuku knew better. This wasn't just Toshinori Yagi, this was All Might. Even in his weakened state, the man was a titan.
The man seemed to recover slightly, "I was just looking for that girl." The man said, trying to sound eloquent. "The children were trying to lie to me."
"For good reason, it would seem," Toshinori's voice was suddenly right behind him.
[When did he -?] Was the only thought in Izuku's mind as the man was gone before he could even blink.
The stranger seemed to be just as surprised by the man's inexplicable burst of speed as he whipped around and found himself staring into the man's eyes. "The girl will be staying with us," the shrunken Hero said in a tone that left no room for argument, "I don't know who she is to you, or what you've done to inspire such fear in her, nor do I care to." He leaned closer to the man, making him sweat, "And you will be walking away," his voice was now a dangerous growl, "And you will never come near her, or these children ever again."
The man seemed to gain some of his confidence back, "I don't think you quite know who you're dealing with!"
Toshinori began to smile, "I know precisely whom I'm dealing with, Mister Chisaki," the man froze, "And the only reason that you don't know who you're dealing with, is because I'm off duty." Toshinori reached up and patted the man's cheek, "Now...run along like a good little boy...before my patience runs out." He stepped aside and gestured for him to start moving.
The now named Chisaki was trembling with rage, looking at the blond man as though he was about to rip him to pieces. But Toshinori kept that same smile on his face, and the pressure he was exerting intensified. Staggered, the man took a shaky step down the street.
Mei finally found her voice as the man started moving away, "You can't let him leave!" She snapped at the blond, "He openly admitted to killing my dad!"
That stopped Chisaki in his tracks as he looked back at the group of children over his shoulder, "I did no such thing."
Hitoshi growled and took a few steps forward, "The hell you didn't!" He yelled, "You said that you killed him just to bait her!"
Chisaki smiled beneath his mask, "I never said that I killed the man I met," he said with his amused tone, angering the boy further, "I simply said that things didn't end well for him." He turned around to face them, "Besides, I don't know who your guardian angel here is, but he's off duty, so - " His features abruptly went blank, his eyes going white.
Toshinori was surprised by the sudden change in the man's behavior, and turned to look at Hitoshi: unsurprisingly, the boy's face was contorted with rage, and his eyes now had a faint red glow to them. He was using his Quirk in full force.
"Walk," the teen's voice was both strained and enraged, "Walk until your feet bleed!" Veins started popping up along the sides of his head, "And when your feet are bloodied and raw...keep walking."
Chisaki turned around and started walking down the street, that same dead expression on his face. Mei watched him until he was out of sight before she turned to the boy that had sent him on his way.
Toshinori walked up to the boy and placed his hand on his shoulder, "Well done, my boy." He said with a smile, "I only wish I could've done more." Hitoshi looked at him like he was going to be sick, a point that the blond did not miss.
"It was enough," Mei muttered shortly before she walked up the boy and hugged him tightly, "Thank you, Hitoshi."
Kinoko hugged the boy from behind, "That was so shroomtastic!" She squealed, "You were so cool!"
Hitoshi gave his girlfriend a shaky smile, "Erm, thanks, Kinoko." He said weakly, "Uh, we should..." he pointed to the cars, and the Rust Bucket, "We should go..."
Izuku nodded and reached over to grip his friend's shoulder, "Wanna drive the Challenger?"
