When Primrose walks out of Lilian's office, it's already pouring outside. She is surprised at the sound of rain pitter-patter against the glassed window of the hospital.
"Oh dear, do you have a ride home?" to that, Primrose shakes her head "It's raining like cats and dogs, I thought the weather is supposed to be sunny today."
"I'll find a cab, don't worry."
"A cab? Prims, it's pouring outside, you must be one hell of a lucky girl if you can find a cab in this weather." checking her watch, Lilian sighs "I have a late shift today, 3 more hours to go."
Primrose checks her phone to see if there is any available ride around the area, it's not a surprise when there are no cabs around and the rate for a ride from here back to her apartment is outrageously high.
"I might just walk home then…"
"Are you crazy? You're not walking home!"
Lilian looks into her phone, helping her friend find a ride home. She is so absorbed in her phone that she doesn't even realize who is walking towards them.
"Ah, Lilian!"
"Caleb!"
Primrose jumps at the name and turns to her side, eyes widening a little bit when she sees him with the doctor's coat hanging on his arm. Caleb, upon seeing her, stops for a moment. There is an awkward air between them and the raven head turns away, avoiding his gaze.
"Are you done with your shift?" Lilian's smile radiates with friendliness "How was the surgery?"
"Yeah, I am. Today's surgery was quite stressful but our team managed to get it done." he nods his head, eyes stealing a few glances at the petite woman next to the brunette "You're done yet?"
"No, 3 more hours to go. It's pouring outside and we're looking for a cab for this young lady right here."
Lilian's arm lands on Primrose's shoulders as she pulls her friend closer to join the conversation. The raven head knits her eyebrow a little bit but says nothing, it's still very uncomfortable to look at Caleb after her harsh words yesterday.
"Ah, since you're going home, can you give Primrose a ride? She lives nearby…" the brunette smiles playfully at how her friend is staring at her like she just grows a second head "We don't have any luck finding a cab for her."
"Lilian, stop it! I don't want to cause any trouble!" she speaks up, just loud enough that her friend can hear.
"Nonsense, you're going to get sick if you keep insisting on walking home. Have you seen the rain? You're gonna get drenched by the time you get back."
Caleb's eyes are now fully on her. He can not let her walk home in this kind of weather.
"Anyway, please help her? I have to get back to work." Lilian giggles when he nods "Thank you so much Caleb, you're a lifesaver!"
Without a warning, Lilian pushes her friend forward, making the water mage stumble on her feet and land on Caleb, who catches her with ease.
"L-Lilian!"
A blush adorns her face as she calls out her friend's name, finding her antic unnecessary. She never expected to be put in this kind of situation, let alone to be this close to him. Her heart thumps loudly against her chest as both her hands are rested on his forearms.
"Are you okay?"
She jumps slightly at his question and nods, somehow she still hasn't let go of him. The way Caleb speaks to her, the tenderness in his voice, the way his hands are now supporting her arms protectively, this closeness makes her head spin.
She can't look up at him, too embarrassed to even address their odd situation, and there is still the apology that she wishes to say regards to their encounter yesterday. Primrose lets go of him and turns away, one hand plays with the cardigan sleeve as she sighs. Caleb looks at her, waiting for any kind of response. He wishes to take her home, it's very dangerous to walk in this kind of weather and he doesn't want to see her get sick. But the young lord needs her to say yes to his offer first…
"Y-you can go home, I-I'll find a cab…"
"Are you sure? The rain is only gonna get worse." looking out of the window, Caleb comments.
"Don't mind me, I'll be okay."
But her response sounds nothing convincing. While he may not know how much she has changed over the last few years, Caleb can not take a risk and let her go home by herself, who knows if she is crazy enough to walk back to the apartment building? The way Lilian spoke about that potential solution, it is safe to say that Primrose might actually do that.
But Primrose is still stubborn as a mule, finding the possibility of being in a close environment with Caleb rather scary. She doesn't want to put herself in situations where she is uncomfortable, but at the same time, this weather is not helping her.
On top of that, there's the topic of apologizing. Primrose steals a few glances at Caleb, who is shuffling through his phone, possibly looking for a ride for her. Why does he bother to look after someone like her who calls him a pervert and stalker without any proof? Caleb doesn't owe her anything…
Why…?
The raven head doesn't know if her body is acting on its own will, or if there is an invisible force guiding her, her small hand grabs onto his white doctor's coat, drawing his attention as Caleb slowly turns to her. Primrose's eyes widen at her own action, unsure what to say at first. But she swallows her fear and speaks up, her voice is as soft as a feather.
"I'm sorry…" she nibbles on her bottom lips a bit before continuing "Y-you're not a pervert, nor a stalker…You're not them at all…"
Her face is bright red and for a moment, Caleb thought that he saw her old self, that sweet and lovely girl he knew years ago. His lips curl up into a small smile. Although she is not looking directly at him, he can see the sincerity in her eyes and how she truly feels about the apology. Primrose has always been the type who wears her heart in her sleeves and Caleb finds that part of her endearing.
"It's okay. I'm sorry too, for scaring you like that." patting her head lightly, Caleb continues "Let me give you a ride home as an apology, okay?"
After a moment of hesitation, in the warmth of his hand and how soothing his voice is, she nods her head.
They walk to the reception of the hospital and Caleb asks for an umbrella that is big enough for both of them. The reception nurse stares at him with an admiration glint in her eyes, she then looks at the young woman near him and blushes, nodding in understanding. She hands him a big, black umbrella and wishes him a good night before returning to her work.
Primrose wants to speak up about her misunderstanding, and for some reason, she decides to keep her mouth shut. Caleb walks out of the building as she follows behind, the rain only pours down even more and she can already hear the sound of cars honking and fighting for customers.
The vampire lord opens the door and turns his attention to her, one hand spread in front of Primrose, silently asking her to hold onto him. The raven head stares at him, onyx orbs gluing onto his silver ones. She can just say no and walk by his side normally, but the look on his face, the tenderness in his eyes draw her in and she accepts his offer, placing her hand gently on top of his.
They walk in the rain, hand in hand as he holds onto the umbrella for both of them. It's quite intimate, being this close to him. Caleb tells her that he parked his car near the entrance of the hospital, it's quite troublesome for them to walk there in the rain but it will be a fast walk and they will be in his car in no time. Primrose doesn't protest, she finds the rain rather peaceful, or maybe it's because she is walking by his side right now.
The raven head remembers how they used to take a stroll together years ago, standing close and enjoying each other's company. It's a lovely memory. But now, things are different, they are different. Unless she can gather the courage to move past the lingering pain, Primrose is still guarding her heart with everything she has.
His hand is oddly warm, too warm for a vampire like him. She always thinks that vampires are the creatures of the night, skin as cold as snow, but Caleb is different. Is it because he is more in tune with his humanity, or maybe he is built differently? On top of that, Caleb is a vampire who conquers the sun, to her, that is impressive. She was surprised when she saw him walking underneath the sunlight years ago, but he told her that he trained himself to conquer it.
Are the other vampires the same as him too?
If Primrose has to be honest, she has never seen a vampire who holds onto his humanity more than Caleb, even when he is born pure blood. It's fascinating and enchanting in a way that she can hardly describe…
When they arrive at his car, Primrose almost thinks that she is looking at someone's else car. But no…
This Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan is his ride…
Caleb's hand is still holding hers, almost reluctantly to let go. He opens the door like a gentleman, inviting her inside. The moment she makes herself comfortable on the seat, Primrose is almost too afraid to touch the interior of the car. She notices how her shoes are wet and how it can dirty his car.
"Don't worry about it." as if he can read her mind, the young lord reassures her. The last thing he wants is for her to be uncomfortable "My car can handle more than a little rain."
She nods her head, shivering due to the cold and he turns on the heater for her immediately. As he drives through the street, a song is played in stereo. Primrose freezes in her spot, she knows this melody, not only that, she knows what this song is about. Stealing a few glances at Caleb, he doesn't look like he knows what the song is. Still so calm and collected, he drives the car carefully on the street.
In that moment, Primrose is tempted to sing along with the song. She doesn't know why, but the song resonates with their situation very well, almost so well that it makes her feel like the timing is too perfect.
So she sings along, quiet yet loud enough that Caleb can hear. Her face is dusted with a lovely shade of red as she looks out of the window, feeling the street light come and go as the car runs through the street.
Caleb, still focusing on the road in front of him, can't help but steal a few glances at the young woman sitting in the passenger seat. Despite wearing a nonchalant expression, the blush on her face says it all. With one hand on the wheel, he uses his other free hand to search for hers, and when he finds it, the young lord holds onto it, lacing their fingers together.
Her heart is racing at the sight of their intertwining hands, she wants to speak up, to tell him that they are not in any form of relationship which this action is considered normal. But Primrose can't bring herself to say that, not when it feels so safe when his hand is on hers. The rain is splashing against the window, pitter-patter sounds like ringing bells in her ears, embracing her in a sense of peace and tranquility. In the midst of her turmoil, a small fire lights up, the fuzzy and warm feeling that she has cast away a long time ago, now resurfaces.
The song Until I Found Her keeps playing in the car, almost like a love song that is meant for them.
Caleb knows this and he is glad that his lovely maiden is comfortable enough to sing along with the song. Her voice, soft and sweet, like a lullaby that promised to bring him to his haven. He stays silent, allowing himself to listen to her singing. This step may be small but it holds the weight of victory and he feels like the gap between them shrinks, even if it's just a tiny bit, an air of tranquility that heals the heartbreak and heartache.
When they arrive at the apartment building, Caleb, once again, is reluctant to let her go. It's getting late, Primrose must feel cold due to the rain and he can not be a selfish person to keep her for himself. The young lord turns off the engine and walks out of the car, swiftly moves to her side, and opens the door for her. As Primrose steps out of the car, the next thing she knows is how his white doctor's coat is now wrapping around her shoulders, shielding her from the cool air.
The kind gesture makes the fire in her heart grow stronger and for once Primrose feels like there is nothing that can stand in their way to return to each other's arms. There are no walls around her heart and there are no responsibilities that Caleb must follow, in this moment, they are two individuals looking at each other with yearning in their eyes. Their feelings, although unspoken, echo even louder in the tranquility air around them.
Primrose knows it's not that easy, nothing in life is easy, for her and for him. But she chooses to be selfish, even if it's only for tonight. Caleb naturally takes her hand in his, as if he has been doing it for so long, and leads her to the elevator. They stand there, hand in hand, no one utters a single word, too afraid that even just a small sound can break this fragile connection between them.
The elevator stops at their floor and Primrose knows, with a few footsteps left, she and Caleb will return to normal. The moment she steps into her apartment, this connection will also disappear. As they stop at her front door, the raven head sighs, reluctant to go inside. She understands how wrong this is, to let her guard down so easily just because he is treating her kindly. She needs to pull herself together, to stay sharp and alert at any form of threat that is coming her way. She needs to go back to the life she had before Caleb entered the picture. It's ironic how just yesterday, she was screaming at him and now, she is not willing to let him go.
But she knows, all good things must come to an end…
When she touches the pad with her keycard, her hand is shaken, but Primrose keeps herself focused on the task instead of the warmth that still wraps around her hand. As the lock is inactivated, Primrose takes a deep breath in…it's time…
Prying her hand off his hold, she refuses to meet his gaze. She can't do it, it's too painful to look at him right now. On one hand, she wishes to keep her distance from him as far away as possible, and yet, she yearns for the warmth he gives her. If the raven head looks at him right now, she might not be able to hold herself back from crying.
But Caleb knows better, before she can retrieve back into the safety of her apartment, he seizes her in his arms and spins the delicate maiden around, her back pressed against the wooden door. His large hand covers her eyes and before she can even react, he kisses her on the forehead. Her voice hitches at the contact, warmth spread on her skin and her eyes swell up, she is happy and yet, confused.
Confused at why he did what he did…
Confused at her own conflicted feelings…
Confused at how he can see through her so easily like that…
"Good night, Primrose." he murmurs, his voice holding such tenderness and emotionally raw, something that only means for her and it melts her heart "And have a sweet dream…"
