Book 1: A Vacation Near the Fjords
Chapter 1
Moving Day
Present Day
Jack Frost woke up from his dream. That was the third time he dreamed of that battle. Each time, it always started when Pitch showed up, and always ended with North charging at Pitch, swords drawn. Jack rubbed his eyes. He hadn't the foggiest idea how the story in his dream ended.
Jack got up and looked around his room. The room was surrounded by walls of ice and wood, each displaying pictures of things that were important to him. For Jack, that was pictures of children playing tag or families doing snowball fights. There were also some toys, books, and games on shelves throughout the room. Jack smiled as he looked all around. North certainly knew what he was doing when he built this room for the Guardian of Fun.
Maybe North would know what the dream was all about, Jack thought as he grabbed his staff and opened the door. Well, only one way to find out. Getting to North would be harder than talking to him.
As Jack walked down the halls, he had to dodge several yetis on their way to different stations. All around him, yetis were working on making different toys. From building big robot dinosaurs to testing out the newest remote-controlled airplanes, the place could be a madhouse even on a quiet day.
And it was the busiest time of the year right now. December had just rolled around, so North had started on a time-crunch, designing toys and getting yetis to finish up the toy-making projects they were working on. Jack had never seen the yetis move so fast. North was usually very hard to find in busy moments like these.
As Jack made his way up the elevator to the main floor of the Pole, he started reflecting. He couldn't believe it had been several months since the Easter that he was made a Guardian. Ever since Jack had worked with the other Guardians to stop Pitch's evil plan, he had been busy, busy, busy. From bringing a bright day to a sad person to arranging fun snow days and snowball fights, Jack was almost as busy as any Guardian. He had loved every minute of his new job, as it gave him great opportunities to do what he did best, having fun.
Not to mention some of the special jobs he did for the other Guardians. Occasionally, Jack would help some of the other Guardians with their various duties. It might be picking up baby teeth for tooth fairies that were tuckered out, visiting a giant with big ears in a faraway land who had some very good materials for new dreams, or even painting eggs and helping dig new tunnels for a certain Easter Bunny. These tasks made Jack's schedule very busy. Not that it was a lot or too difficult. On the contrary, these special assignments were always fun and engaging.
The elevator finally stopped at the top floor, pulling Jack from his thoughts. As he walked along, he stopped a large yeti, who was carrying a pile of books and toys in a crate. "Hey Phil. I'm looking for North. Do you know where he is?"
Phil shrugged, grunting and growling, pointing to the box and to North's office. Jack couldn't really understand the yeti-tongue yet, but he could usually tell what they were saying through their facial expressions and their gestures. In this case, Phil was saying that he didn't know where North was, and quite frankly, didn't have time to find out; he was carrying a large box that needed to be moved to someplace important, and Jack should have tried the office before asking Phil where North was.
Jack grimaced a little. "Ok, sorry to bother you. I hope that you have a great time moving that stuff to wherever it is you're going."
Phil nodded, patting Jack's head as a semi-apology gesture, then lifted the box and kept going. Now that Jack was thinking about it, almost all the yetis who weren't designing new toys were carrying them in boxes in the direction of the elevators. They all seemed to be very busy, and not in a conversational mood. What was going on here?
Maybe North would know. As Jack approached the main office, he saw a sign that said: Nicholas St. North, Guardian of Wonder and Christmas Deliveries. KEEP OUT, unless it's for Christmas or Guardian business. If it's for anything else, please try Yeti Services on floor five.
Well, it was Christmas business in a way, since part of his questions involved what the yetis were doing with the boxes. Jack turned the knob and charged in. "Hey, North…"
Jack stopped as he looked inside. North's office always had something going on, but this was one of the few times it seemed to be nearly overflowing. There seemed to be letters everywhere, on bookshelves, desks, even near the fireplace. As Jack walked in, a pile of letters fell, closing the door behind him.
"Jack. So glad of you to come," said a voice.
Jack turned around to see North coming towards him. North was a rather large man, both in height, and in girth. He seemed to be wearing a Russian cap, and large black boots. Both of his trademark swords stuck out beneath his large red coat that he always seemed to wear.
What stuck out more to Jack than North's attire was North's face. Above a bushy, snowy beard, was the face of an energetic older man, with dark, thick eyebrows, large eyes, and a welcome smile. Even though North seemed old, his general attitude and twinkle of his eyes showed that there was a lot more to him than met the eye.
"Hey, North. Great to see you. I'm sorry if now's a bad time…"
"Pah. Think nothing of it, Jack. You caught me as I was reviewing letters delivered to me around world. I read and write back to each one I get, with answers to questions or considerations of gift requests. Very time-consuming though. I usually wait until end of year to be sure that I don't miss any letters. As a result, it can be very busy time for me."
"Oh. Well, I can let you get back to it."
"No, no, no. I really need a break. You have no idea how tiring it can be to read and respond to at least five thousand letters a day. I am almost done though, so I can get back to preparations for Christmas. Now, what was it you wanted to see me about?"
Jack took a deep breath. "I've been having these weird dreams lately."
"What kinds of dreams?"
"Strange ones. They're always the same, always on a dark night, at a lake in the mountains. You and the other Guardians are there, fighting Pitch's forces. It always ends with you jumping to attack Pitch and I wake up."
North looked puzzled, and a little troubled. His hand went to his beard, his eyes taking on a thoughtful look. He took a seat, inviting Jack to do the same. Jack looked around, seeing nothing but letters. He soon found that some of the piles were covering furniture, so after shuffling aside some letters, Jack sat down.
North pondered for a few seconds, then looked over at Jack. "Jack, what you dreamt about sounds like something that happened in the past. Only battle I know at the place where you're describing was the final battle of the Dark Ages. The Guardians made a final stand that day and drove Pitch back. When Pitch fled, his forces in chaos, we thought he was done for good. That is, up until you became Guardian. Why you would be having dreams, I am not certain."
Jack looked confused. "So, there's nothing you can tell me about that battle?"
North looked away. "It was long time ago. I barely remember. Way before you became Guardian. Maybe Sandy would know."
Jack looked at North. There seemed to be more here than North was saying. But before he could respond, a yeti came running in, letters flying everywhere.
North jumped a foot in the air, swords drawn and ready. When he saw the yeti, he lowered his swords and stared at the swarm of letters that were now flying everywhere. "How many times have I told you to knock? It's important and polite thing to do currently. There is sign outside office that agrees."
The yeti grunted and nodded towards the door.
"What? We're ready to move? Why didn't you say anything? Let's get going."
"Move? Move where?" Jack asked.
"To final launch point for Christmas sleigh ride, Jack. It's Moving Day. All toys need to be moved and sent over to final launch point."
Jack was confused. "But I thought the sleigh set off from the Pole here? Why does it all need to be moved? Christmas isn't for a few weeks."
"Yes, Jack. Sleigh rides for Guardians or other occasions are at main sleigh room here. But bag for toys would be too big for room. So we go to…"
North stopped. Jack looked over at him. "Go to where?"
North turned back. "Go to launch point. You are welcome to come with me, Jack. You should see place. Very large and timeless. Has rustic charm to it with a pinch of metropolis in it."
Jack frowned, following North as he dodged yetis picking up letters and sorting them to read and unread-respond to before Christmas Eve boxes. "You're hiding something. Where are all the toys going? What's different about where you launch the sleigh than where we normally set out?"
A yeti once again interrupted North before he could respond. North nodded as the yeti was talking. "Yes, yes, I'll be right there."
North turned back to Jack. "Sorry, Jack. I can't talk right now. Very, very busy. I will answer questions as soon as Moving Day is over. If you want to help, come down to floor nine. We'll be moving toys and letters into station to transport to final launch point. You can catch a ride in floor nine station to launch point as well. I think you'd like transportation." He then turned back to the yeti and started walking off with him.
Jack was confused. What was going on here. Moving Day? It was the first he had heard of it. Jack would have gone to question North further when he heard something.
He couldn't quite make it out, but it sounded like someone singing a short melody. It was captivating and hypnotizing. Jack went after the sound, dodging yetis and the occasional clumsy elf, trying to determine where it came from.
In the days to come, Jack didn't know if it was fate, destiny, or something else that caused the voice. What he did know at the time as he was flying out of the large, palace-like outpost that was the Pole was that he needed to find out where it was coming from. If Jack had known what would happen, he might have reconsidered following the voice.
And that was the end of this chapter. Hope you enjoyed it. It will be interesting to see where Jack goes and what he encounters. As well as what North is working on with Moving Day. As always, please rate and review.
